Chainsaw Man Starter Rope Cast Interview: Shougo Sakata

How did you feel when you were cast as Aki?

I was half happy and half in disbelief. In my audition tape, I tried not to overact, and I made it to the studio audition. I acted very naturally there, and I felt like the face-to-face audition also went well, so I had my hopes up a little (laughs). There was a bit of time between the audition and when the results came out where I had started to give up, but then I received the response that I passed the audition. The best way to say it is, I was really surprised, but I'm going to do my best to adapt the manga I love into an anime.

What's your impression of Aki; what about him appeals to you?

My impression of Aki is that he's "a normal person." He can deal with all types of people evenly. Aki also wants revenge against a specific devil, but I like that Himeno-senpai provided a space for him to grow up properly. Aki is often said to be kind. He can't accept the misfortune that befell his family, so he can't accept the absurd things that happen to the people around him, so he tries to eliminate the cause. I think that looks like kindness to others. When he beats up Denji, whose very existence an absurdity, I think that was Aki's form of kindness. He believed that it would be better for Denji to give up than for him to lose his life.

How did you create Aki's voice?

Before recording the second episode, where he first appears, I worked really hard to figure out my acting approach, but director Nakayama said, "I want you to act the way the character would naturally and realistically talk. Dial back your acting a little bit." I took that advice, and from there I kept repeating through a process of trial and error, until one day the director said, "Your voice is like Aki's, so you don't need to perform too much." I remember I was very happy when he said that. After that, I was able to loosen up and act naturally.

What details do you focus on when you're acting?

Aki's speech doesn't include any superfluous details, and there are a lot of things that don't require emotion. What I'm conscious of is thinking naturally about "Who am I communicating this information to?" and acting naturally, like I'm drawing from how I normally talk. Lately, it's getting clearer and clearer where Aki is looking, who he is talking to, and what he is trying to convey. But I think I can still get closer to Aki, so I want to focus more!

What's the atmosphere like when you're recording?

The cast members are just like their characters (laughs). Fairouz-san starts conversations, Toya-kun suddenly loses focus, and Kusunoki-san speaks kindly to Toya-kun…Recording always progresses harmoniously, it's a great atmosphere. In particular, Toya-kun is really in sync with Denji, and I love it. No matter what anyone says, Toya-kun's Denji improvisations are one of the highlights. Fairouz-san's energetic, bright and funny energy is also the best, and Makima, played by Kusunoki-san, feels very fitting when you hear her voice. I think this is a result of Kusunoki's love for Makima.

What are Aki's highlights in the early part of the anime?

The way Aki takes out the cigarette is drawn in a really cool way, so please pay attention to it. I only saw it in the rehearsal footage, but the sequence is him tapping the box, taking out the cigarette, lighting the lighter with the hand still holding the box, and smoking it. I thought, "Are you going to draw that many details in the anime?" I was really excited and beyond surprised And… as for Aki, I also love his interactions with Himeno-senpai. Their intimate-feeling conversations are nice. The performance that I personally focused on was the scene where Aki's "ball" is kicked by Denji (lol). I studied vocal expression a lot, so please listen carefully!

Finally, do you have a message for the fans?

My honest thoughts are, I've been given a very important role, and I will play Aki in every episode to live up to the expectations of the fans. I will do my best to live up to the Aki Hayakawa that everyone imagines. I'll keep recording, so I would be happy if you could attend!

Translation notes:

It was hard to translate what the director said in a way that preserves the original meaning, a direct translation sounds a bit like it is an insult or a criticism. What Nakayama was saying was basically that Sakata's natural voice was already great for the role. The literal quote is "坂田くんは声帯がアキだから、「こう演じよう」としなくていい", so a more direct translation would be "Sakata-kun, because your voice is already Aki's, you don't need to perform like this." but that isn't the clearest. I went for more of a localization than a direct/exact translation to be clearer.

When Sakata says "肩の力を抜いて演じられるようになったのはそこからですね," a direct translation would be "I was able to act with my shoulders relaxed," meaning he was able to loosen up and act more naturally, but a direct translation doesn't convey that as well.

Translated "どんどん明確" as clearer and clearer, but a more literal translation would be "steadily becoming clearer," or "increasingly clearer."

Sakata says "中でも戸谷くんの演じるデンジはシンクロ率がとても高くて", which literally translates into saying that Toya and Denji have a "high synchronization rate," kind of using the language of mecha anime (how the pilot is synchronized with the mecha), but to be more clear I just translated it as "Toya-kun is really in sync with Denji"

"デンジな戸谷くん" would literally translate to Denji-like Toya-kun (using Denji's name as a na-adjective), but since the main point of the sentence was to highlight Toya's improv skills, I didn't translate it in that literal sense.

He literally says アキの「ボール」, so this feels like the best way to translate it.

Mini-review:

The buzz and hype for this anime is insane and all my friends are obsessed with it, so my expectations were so sky-high that I felt like there was no way it could met them. And yet, not only did it meet them, it actually surpassed them in every single way. The story moves at the perfect pace and pretty much all of the characters are unhinged and deranged in the most charming of ways. Also, the world-building feels so refreshing, even though we've had lots of animes about demons in the last few years. But, as good as the material itself is, the thing that I truly need to highlight is the animation and the aesthetic. Pretty much every episode feels like a 20 minute long movie, that's how amazing it is. Everything about it is so cinematic and stunning, seriously. I can't wait for the second season, and it's hard to accept that we probably won't get it until 2024. But if that's what they need to maintain the same quality level, so be it.

Q1. Please tell us what you think about the character you voiced.

A: Givre was influenced by a certain pair of siblings and strongly believed that he was an older brother who cared for his sister, so this time, I tried to focus on that aspect when voicing him. However, as for my impression of Givre, it's hard to say, but... I think it's wonderful to have someone who is more important than anything else, even more important than your own life. I thought that living for someone you love is what makes life more enjoyable than anything else. Givre himself also lived his life as a different person this time, but he really liked the relationship siblings have, so I think that part of him wasn't so bad after all.

Q2. If you were to become a black fairy yourself, what kind of black fairy (of emotions) do you think you would be?

A: I'd probably be a black fairy of envy or jealousy. I tend to think that what other people eat or have seems better than what I have (laughs).

Q3. If you could have just one dream come true, what would it be?

A: I want to go back to when I was little with all of my memories intact.

Q4. Please give one message to the fans.

A: Givre might get misunderstood a lot, but he's a really kind older brother. I hope this game and the characters in it will be loved by everyone. Please take care of me in "Dream Meister and the Recollected Black Fairy."

Oboro - Sakata Shougo

Q1. Please tell us what you think about the character you voiced.

A: When I first saw Oboro, I thought that he was a type of character that I had never voiced before. And as I read the story, I realized that Oboro had experienced a certain event in his past that made him frail and cynical, which changed my view of him a little. If I say more, I might ended up spoiling the whole story, so by all means, please go and give Oboro's story a read!

Q2. If you were to become a black fairy yourself, what kind of black fairy (of emotions) do you think you would be?

A: I'm someone who tends to find a lot of things as bothersome, so I think I'd be a lazy black fairy...! I'm not good at cleaning, and I tend to pile up all my laundry....lol

Q3. If you could have just one dream come true, what would it be?

A: I wish for a body that could live without sleep! I want to be awake all the time!

Q4. Please give one message to the fans.

A: Oboro might be a bit stubborn, but he has a cute side, too, so please take care of him! Please take care of me, too!

Mateo - Takumi Yasuaki

Q1. Please tell us what you think about the character you voiced.

A: When I saw the setting materials and saw how the script was filled with a lot of katakana (mostly "Uh"s), I thought I was going to voice a very difficult character (laughs). With the help of the staff, I felt relieved that we managed to finish the recording without any problems. Also, in Mateo's character story, there were some emotional moments, so it would be nice if I could deliver to everyone what I felt at that time through my acting.

Q2. If you were to become a black fairy yourself, what kind of black fairy (of emotions) do you think you would be?

A: I tend to get emotional and sentimental when I'm hungry (laughs), so I think the keyword for the negative emotion that would fit me is probably "hunger."

Q3. If you could have just one dream come true, what would it be?

A: I wish to have a stronger throat (seriously). Please take care of me!!

Q4. Please give one message to the fans.

A: I'm Takumi Yasuaki who's in charge of voicing Mateo. Mateo isn't a character who talks a lot, but there are a lot of emotions packed within those few and short words of his. He's a very pure and charming character, so I hope everyone will be able to give him a lot of love. And with this game's concept of "chasing dreams," I'm very excited to see what kind of story will unfold in the future. I hope everyone will be able to enjoy each of those stories! Uh!!

Platinum - Ise Yuri

Q1. Please tell us what you think about the character you voiced.

A: From the materials I received and the tone of the dialogues written, I went prepared for the recording with the impression that Platinum is a cool-type character. But, the direction I got was something along the line of "be more open-minded and laugh with all your might," which changed the way I thought of him. However, I was able to get a feel for the character immediately after receiving the instructions and I really enjoyed voicing Platinum. However, since Platinum's beliefs are absolutely unshakable, I had to act out the "seriousness" of that belief by considering the difference in his attitude even within his base mood.

Q2. If you were to become a black fairy yourself, what kind of black fairy (of emotions) do you think you would be?

A: The emotion that would suit me is probably "Indecisiveness." I tend to have a hard time when making choices in my daily life (laughs). I think I'd chant nastily about the merits of all the options to make people confused and troubled. I personally don't think it's a bad thing to get lost either, so I'll use this as a cliché.

Q3. If you could have just one dream come true, what would it be?

A: I wish I wasn't as weak in the morning...!! I always have a hard time waking up in the morning that my I'd lose my appetite sometimes.... It's hard to think clearly or move efficiently, so I always ended up leaving my house at the very last minute, which I honestly hate (laughs). If this habit could be improved, I could spend a better time in the morning...!

Q4. Please give one message to the fans.

A: I can't wait to see how the players feel about Platinum's free-spirited side and his persistent side when it comes to the things he wants! There are also many other unique characters, so I hope everyone will play the game and get to know their various charms!

The Continent of Excillant

Various worlds fill out the continent of Excillant, where our story is set. What awaits our heroes before they set out to accomplish their goals…?

Savalon, The Drought Kingdom

A country turned into a desert by the lumbering and wars by the dynasty of 200 years prior. Although underground water veins were discovered, the town is beginning to submerge as a result. It is also known for its luxurious casino hall.

Wiswald, The Magic Kingdom

A poet employed by Bernard Alphard, owner of the casino hall.

Gambler Asterisk Holder.

A voluptuous gambler who frequents the casino hall.

A wicked woman who challenges the men seduced by her beauty to card games, taking all their money and using them as pawns.

Beastmaster Asterisk Holder.

A reticent woman who puts on beast and animal performances at the casino hall.

She was a member of a traveling acrobatics troupe, but was picked up by Bernard Alphard after a monster attack left her alone.

Bernard Alphard (voiced by Takaya Kuroda)

Thief Asterisk Holder.

Owner of Savalon’s famous casino hall.

A man who built the casino hall of a lifetime and is now a member of the council. He is the one who discovered the underground water veins and brought an influx of water to Savalon.

Elvis and Rody’s late master. As the central figure in the founding of Wiswald, she was a just and impartial mage.

Red Mage Asterisk Holder.

Head of the Magic Research Institute, as well as the leader of Wiswald.

Elvis’ senior pupil, together they studied magic under the guidance of Emma Odilia. Since losing his daughter in an accident, he has holed himself up in the Magic Research Institute devoted to some sort of research.

Lily Grenadine (voiced by Miki Narahashi)

Hunter Asterisk Holder.

Rody Grenadine’s wife, and the woman who supports him behind the scenes.

Since losing her daughter, she has holed herself up in the forest near the town. However, she is said to be living there with her daughter who died…

Galahad Kelly (voiced by Hiroki Yasumoto)

Shield Master Asterisk Holder.

Guardsman of the Magic Research Institute. Although born in Rimedahl, he was taken in by a distant relative living in Wiswald after the death of his parents. He blames himself for the death of Rody and Lily’s daughter.

■ Systems

In addition to a traditional, turn-based battle system, you can enjoy innovative and strategic battles unique to the Bravely series with elements such as “special attacks” that buff your party in real-time, and “support abilities” that can be combined with multiple jobs.

Special Moves

In addition to powerful “special moves” that can be activated under certain conditions in battle, dedicated special move background music buffs the entire party. The buff remains for long as the music continues to play after activation, giving you the opportunity to quickly wipe out your enemies.

—Beastmaster Special Move: “Let’s Do Our Best Together!”

Summons a large number of monsters and unleashes a powerful physical attack on all enemies. Increases the entire party’s physical attack and magic attack power.

—White Mage Special Move: “Sacred Light”

Recovers a large portion of all allies’ HP, as well as cures all status ailments. Increases the entire party’s physical defense and magic defense power.

Use special moves to wipe out enemies in real-time.

Support Abilities

By mastering a job, in addition to command abilities you can use in battle, you can also equip and learn support abilities that buff your character. Learned support abilities can be equipped even if you change jobs, allowing you to combine them with other jobs.

—“Empty Handed” (Monk)

When both hands are free of equipment, physical attack power and accuracy rate significantly increase.

—“Aspir Attack” (Black Mage)

Restores MP based on the damage dealt by the “Attack” command.

Field Actions

By slashing your sword at monsters wandering the field, you can start the battle with Brave Attack activated to gain an additional Brave Point (BP). You can also use your sword to cut the grass on the field to find items.

—The situation at the start of the battle changes depending on whether you approach the enemy from behind, get snuck up on by the enemy yourself, or strike them with your sword.

—If your Brave Attack is a success, you will start the battle with an additional Brave Point.

—If you cut down grass, you may find an item.

■ Jobs

Troubadour

Supports the party through the power of poetry.

An assist job that protects the party’s status. With a number of total effect skills on hand, the Troubadour is a reliable ally against strong enemies.

Beastmaster

A shortstop that employs various monsters.

The Beastmaster captures and employs its prey. From offense to relief, it can fight flexibly according to the situation.

Gambler

Leaves it to luck to turn the tables.

A gambling job unafraid to take a risk. With luck on its side, the Gambler aims for a big return.

Berserker

Pulverizes enemies with its trusty axe.

An attacker that wields an axe with high attack power to demolish its enemies.

Red Mage

An all-purpose mage prominent in both offense and defense.

This universal mage job can use both attack magic and recovery magic.

Hunter

Analyzes the enemy to pierce their weak point.

A master of the bow, the Hunter unleashes powerful blows that pierce the enemy’s weak point.

Shield Master

The party’s iron fortress that stands on the front line.

A defense-specialized job that wards off attacks and protects its allies with high defense power and a large shield.

Pictomancer

An artist that repaints the battle.

A job that debuffs the enemy through by utilizing various colors.

■ Network

The Bravely series’ familiar “Single-Player RPG You Can Play With Everyone” element returns. In Bravely Default II, you can utilize the time the game is in sleep mode to help grow your characters.

“Search”: Take Advantage of the Time You Are Unable to Play

“Search” mode, in which you rent a boat to explore the seas, is a handy feature that allows you to earn rewards based on the amount of time your game is in sleep mode. By “searching” when you are unable to play, you can obtain items that assist your growth, including experience points and job points. While you can use this feature offline, if you are connected to the internet, players from other worlds will help you and further increase your rewards.

—You can start “Search” mode by visiting the elderly woman who rents boats in the starting country.

—Your rewards will increase based on the amount of time your game is asleep. You can continue to “search” for up to 12 hours, so make the most of your time when you go to bed or go out.

OP / ED Performers Revealed for Fairy Ranmaru TV Anime

The opening and ending theme song performers have been revealed for Fairy Ranmaru ~Anata no Kokoro Otasuke Shimasu~ ("Fairy Ranmaru ~We Will Help Your Heart~"), an upcoming original magical boy TV anime featuring a group of five handsome young men who transform in order to help their clients heal the emptiness in their hearts.

The opening and ending themes are performed by 5 to HEAVEN, an in-character voice unit composed of Ranmaru Aoi (CV: Shougo Sakata), Homura Hoterase (CV: Kohsuke Tanabe), Uruu Seiren (CV: Balletta Yutaka), Juka Mutsuoka (CV: Taichi Kusano), and Takara Utashiro (CV: Akihiro Hori).

The opening theme is entitled "Ayashiku Get your heart" ("Bewitching Get your heart"), while the ending theme is entitled "Yousei Aika" ("Yousei Lament"). Both songs will be released as singles in Japan by Pony Canyon on April 21, 2021.
