mhs2 is really good at connecting gameplay and story elements imo

spoilers up to the astalos boss fight 👍

during the section with avinia, for example. The big theme of that section is how the rider doesn't trust ratha, and how this holds both of them back. The rider at this point is afraid of ratha, and ratha can tell, which is why the wings of ruin thing happens at all.

A gameplay quirk that is never mentioned until you encounter it, is that here, ratha's kinship caps out at 50 in battle. I couldn't even tell at first, i just thought "wow, ratha's kinship fills up really slowly."

This is amazing, for a multitude of reasons. First, it locks you out of ratha's kinship move. This makes a lot of sense, because the rider is afraid of ratha'a full power! They're not gonna unleash it on purpose! They're in the mountains in the hope of sealing it, after all.

Secondly, this heavily disincentivises using ratha in battle. I know I sure didn't! It's just such a heavy penalty on an otherwise really good monstie. By not using ratha in battle, there's a disconnect not just between the rider and ratha, but between the player and ratha.

It's great, is what I'm saying.

Next is a section I just got through, the fight against the astaros at the volcanic gates. After this fight, ratha collapses from exertion. At this point, we know ratha highly values and places their trust in the rider, which is what fed the conflict of the section i mentioned previously.

The amazing thing here is the boss's pattern. Personally, I didn't use ratha against this boss, but i feel the game really wants you to. The astaros has a technical pattern, which the strength pattern ratha is strong against. However, the boss uses electric attacks, which ratha is weak against.

Unless you have 3 strength monsties in your party like me, you want to use ratha for the good pattern match up, but it's a huge risk because of the elemental weakness. Ratha is your in-cutscene monstie, and therefore also the monstie the rider fought with in universe. The boss design shows how the rider chose to recklessly charge in with a superficial advantage, despite the substantial risk to ratha.

Furthermore, you start the fight alone. In the cutscene previous, the rider charges in as soon as they spot a rage rayed (is that the english term? sounds silly) monster, no questions asked. Cheval is... familiar with rathalos from the previous game, so chance is he knows it'll be weak to an astalos' electric attacks. He only joins the battle on turn 3, showing that he needed time to either deliberate whether to help the reckless rider at all, or to catch up.

It's especially neat to have cheval be the one to scold the rider on this, since cheval himself says it's how he acted when he was younger, and the situation mirrors his previous treatment of rathi.

Generally, I feel the game does a great job at conveying the rider's feelings. The mhs2 rider is.. less flawless? than the mhs1 rider. They're not as plucky and brave, but they are trying their best, even when they're afraid.

I like how being too afraid of ratha swung in the opposite direction of overestimating ratha instead. By trying to raise razewing ratha they are in over their head, and they make mistakes because of it, but ratha loves them regardless. Even if they perhaps lose their way a little bit on a miniature revenge quest.

He had accidentally sliced his hands open while picking up broken pieces of pottery off the floor that had once been a beautiful crimson red vase decorated with cherry blossom ( before their black cat Phantom had knocked it off the table while jumping over it to get away from his miniature dachshund. ) They really NEEDED to get a dust pan and brush, just in case it happened again . 

There’s a glare hidden somewhere in his BAFFLED expression, followed quickly by a roll of his eyes that gives away his frustration, but also one full of love and utter adoration all the same.  He could NEVER be angry at Romeo for long as he loved him far to much, even if he did occasionally jest that he smelled awful. 

“You weren’t complainin’ about my so called stinkiness when ya were feedin’ off of me last night, Ro. I mean if I recall correctly ya were enjoyin it perhaps a little to much, as ya told me my blood tasted like your favorite bottle of expensive red wine. Cheval Blanc. Don’t tell me ya don’t remember any of  that?” He growls, lips PURSUING into a childish pout. “There was actually a moment where I thought ya wasn’t goin’ to stop.” A hand lifts up to diligently touch the plaster still on the side of his neck ( his healing factor always SLOWS down to a snail pace when Romeo drinks some of his blood ) before he beckons him to come closer. “ But stinky or not I know ya will always love me ―― and I will always love you. You have become my world over these past few months.”

The Calgary Stampede, digitized | Le Stampede Calgary, numérisé

The Calgary Stampede: it is a tradition dating back to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. It later became the Stampede when Guy Weadick, an American promoter, organized his first rodeo alongside the festival. Known for the generous pancake breakfasts, countless rodeos, endless musical performances, chuckwagon racing, line dancing, horseback riding, and views of everyone donned in their finest cowboy gear--one wonders, how has technology entered into this western agricultural space? Let’s take a gander, ya’ll. 

Microchipping horses to track their health

For chuckwagon racers, keeping tabs on the horse health throughout their time on the Stampede grounds is essential. Horses are now microchipped and, when passed over with a wand, these chips give updates via a centralized database to their veterinarians, owners, and Stampede officials on their horses’ health. 

"The microchip wand is used to just identify the horse and it automatically syncs into the database system," said Thompson-Shields of the Stampede. This information is also used to ensure compliance with Stampede policies, such as mandatory rest time for horses.  

There’s an app for that pancake breakfast 

Needless to say there is an app for everything now, including the Calgary Stampede. Planning where you will have your fourth or fifth free pancake breakfast of the day has never been easier; there are ubiquitous restaurants to choose from!

Micro-scale “Yahoo” signs 

During the 10-day festival, large-scale Yahoo signs pop-up all over the city. But some experts at the University of Calgary are horsing around with microtechnologies to provide the small-scale versions of the sign.

“We wanted to showcase the abilities of the laser system that we have which is unique in Canada and is used for making very small things,” said director Colin Dalton at the University of Calgary. “Very small things are taking over our lives. Everything is miniaturized and portable.”  

Using radar technology to survey horse tracks

Another example of agricultural technology is found in the surveying of horsetracks. The field is combed by radar technology for several hours and produces a digital image of the condition of the track. 

“When you look at the track, it can’t be too hard or too soft, so you have to find the right balance for the animals,” Kristina Barnes, who works with western events and agriculture at the Stampede, said. “We work really hard to find that balance and work with the owners of the horses to do that.”  

Hundreds of horses participate in activities from chuckwagon races to barrel racing to saddle bronc to steer wrestling. Thus, easing issues surrounding maintenance of the Stampede grounds helps the festival run smoothly. 

Based on the Calgary Stampede’s partnership with Bell, it appears that this is only the beginning of digitizing the Stampede. Who knows what’s next, but the Calgary Stampede is an intriguing example of thoughtful digital inclusion in agriculture.

Les chevaux sont maintenant micropuce et, lorsqu'ils sont passés avec une baguette, ces puces fournissent des mises à jour via une base de données centralisée à leurs vétérinaires, propriétaires et responsables du Stampede sur la santé de leurs chevaux.  

"La baguette à puce est utilisée simplement pour identifier le cheval et elle se synchronise automatiquement dans le système de base de données", a déclaré Thompson-Shields. Ces informations sont également utilisées pour assurer la conformité avec les politiques du Stampede, telles que le temps de repos obligatoire des chevaux.

Il y a une application pour ce petit déjeuner aux crêpes

Inutile de dire qu'il existe une application pour tout, y compris le Stampede de Calgary. Il n’a jamais été aussi simple d’organiser votre quatrième ou cinquième déjeuner de crêpes gratuit dans la journée: vous aurez le choix entre plusieurs restaurants.

Micro-échelle «Yahoo»

Pendant les 10 jours du festival, des panneaux Yahoo à grande échelle ont été installés partout dans la ville. Mais comme certains experts de l’Université de Calgary s’attachent aux microtechnologies pour fournir les versions à petite échelle.

«Nous voulions mettre en valeur les capacités du système laser que nous avons, unique au Canada et utilisé pour fabriquer de très petites choses», a déclaré le directeur, Colin Dalton, de l'Université de Calgary. «De très petites choses occupent nos vies. Tout est miniaturisé et portable. "

Utilisation de la technologie radar pour surveiller les traces de chevaux

On trouve un autre exemple de technologie agricole dans la façon dont les cours de piste sont étudiés. Le champ est peigné par la technologie radar pendant plusieurs heures et produit une image numérique de l'état de la piste.

"Quand on regarde la piste, ça ne peut être ni trop dur ni trop mou, il faut donc trouver le bon équilibre pour les animaux", a déclaré Kristina Barnes, avec les événements occidentaux et l'agriculture au Stampede. "Nous travaillons très dur pour trouver cet équilibre et travaillons avec les propriétaires des chevaux pour le faire."

Des centaines de chevaux participent à des activités allant de la course de charrettes à la course de tonneaux en passant par la selle pour diriger la lutte. L'assouplissement des problèmes liés à l'entretien du terrain du Stampede contribue au bon déroulement du festival.

D'après le partenariat établi entre le Stampede de Calgary et Bell, il semble que ce ne soit que le début de la numérisation du Stampede. Qui sait ce qui va suivre, mais le Stampede de Calgary est un exemple intrigant de l’infusion numérique de la culture dans l’agriculture.
