I cannot say enough about #ChokherBali written by #RabindranathTagore, his Anglicized name for his Bengali name of #RabindranathThakur.

This book was composed in the early 1900s and written in the context of the newly enacted law of 1856 called The Hindu Widow Remarriage Act.

The British were in full reign of India and introduced this Act in the hope to modernize India.

This beautifully written novel begins with the marriage of Mahendra and Asha, a bride initially selected for Mahendra’s best friend called Bihari. Asha is a 15-year old bride who weds Mahendra a 22-year old doctor-in-training who took his bride primarily on his primal need to ‘have’ her.

Mahendra decides he wants to educate Asha, to give her an overall appeal. But she isn’t interested in her studies, nor is she welcome into domestic duty by her mother-in-law who had no hand in selecting this bride for her son.

One day Mahendra’s mother returns to her own village where she meets her choice of bride for her son called Binodini. To her horror she learns Binodini’s husband died quickly into her marriage. Since then Binodini has been living the life of a widow at the mere age of 16-years old.

Binodini is a different woman. She is educated, aware of domestic responsibility but not allowed by society to re-marry. Mahendra’s mother decides then that Binodini must come stay with her growing family, and under one roof come Mahendra, Binodini, Asha, and Mahendra’s mother.

Mahendra begins to take a liking to Binodini’s worldly knowledge, her quick wit, and her double speak. She appeals to his mind in the very way Asha appeals to his carnal needs.

Here begins Tagore’s exploration of treatment towards widows in then modern day of 1920s India.

This book is beyond recommendation. It is written on a classic yet contemporary theme unique in its form of storytelling and narration. Scenes are not developed, dialogue isn’t broken up to spoon feed the reader. Many times I had to go back and re-read a paragraph to see who was speaking or what was the scene change. It lends a snapshot of what society in India was like for women trapped in a life he did not choose
