Christine Sun Kim (born 1980) is an American sound artist based in Berlin. Working predominantly in drawing, performance, and video, Kim's practice considers how sound operates in society. Musical notation, written language, American Sign Language (ASL), and the use of the body are all recurring elements in her work. Her work has been exhibited in major cultural institutions internationally, including in the Museum of Modern Art's first exhibition about sound in 2013 and the Whitney Biennial in 2019. She was named a TED Fellow in both 2013 and 2015, a Director's Fellow at MIT Media Lab in 2015, and a Ford Foundation Disability Futures Fellow in 2020. Via Wikipedia

“Envision a piano. ASL is broken down into many different grammatical parameters. If you assign a different parameter to each finger as you play the piano -- such as facial expression, body movement, speed, hand shape and so on, as you play the piano -- English is a linear language, as if one key is being pressed at a time. However, ASL is more like a chord -- all 10 fingers need to come down simultaneously to express a clear concept or idea in ASL. If just one of those keys were to change the chord, it would create a completely different meaning.”

The music of Sign Language
When I started learning ASL (American Sign Language), I found this richness of conveyable meanings absolutely mind blowing (my interst comes from the fact that I often write algorithms to analyze language nuances in AI applications).Christine Sun Kim’s analogy is a wonderful way to describe this richness.

Netflix’s ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Showrunner Albert Kim to Step Down, Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan to Lead Final Two Seasons
Netflix’s live-action “Avatar: The Last Airbender” series is undergoing a change in leadership.
Variety has learned that Albert Kim, who developed the series and served as showrunner on Season 1, is stepping down. Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will lead the show as executive producers going forward. Netflix has already announced the show has been renewed for two more seasons, concluding with Season 3.
Boylan served as co-executive producer on Season 1 of “Last Airbender,” while Raisani was an executive producer, director, and a VFX supervisor. Kim will remain onboard as an executive producer for Seasons 2 and 3. According to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Kim wanted to explore new opportunities following the multi-year development process on “Last Airbender” and has signed a deal with Disney to work as an executive producer on the “Percy Jackson” series while also developing new projects for that company.
Boylan’s other credits include the hit Peacock series “Poker Face” as well as shows like the Netflix-Marvel series “The Punisher,” “Citadel” at Amazon, and “Cloak and Dagger” at Freeform. She is also an accomplished playwright, recently debuting her sci-fi play “Analogue” in London, as well as a comic book writer for DC, Marvel, BOOM Studios, and Tokyopop.
She is repped by WME, Art/Work Entertainment, and attorneys Erik Hyman at Paul Hastings.
In addition to his work on “Last Airbender,” Raisani has done VFX work on shows like “Lost in Space” and “Stranger Things” for Netflix as well as “Game of Thrones” and “The Flash” among many others. He has also directed episodes of “Lost in Space” in addition to episodes of “Last Airbender.”
He is repped by CAA and Myman Greenspan.
“Last Airbender” is based on the iconic Nickelodeon series of the same name. The live-action version’s first season starred Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Ken Leung, with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim.
Along with Albert Kim and Raisani, Dan Lin and Lindsey Liberatore executive produce on behalf of Rideback, with Michael Goi also executive producing. Goi directed the first two episodes, while Raisiani directed episodes three and four. Roseanne Liang directed episodes five and six, with Jet Wilkinson directing the final two episodes of Season 1.

For Halloween, Marc decides to go into school as Count Marcula, a spooky yet romantic vampiric writer. His costume is really detailed, slicked back hair, cape, suit, gloves, super realistic fake fangs, red eye contacts, fake nails, fake ears, you name it.
He speaks throughout the day in a Transylvanian accent (I vant to suck your blood, that kinda voice), brings an umbrella to school, and comes out of an actual coffin.
Count Marcula: Good evening. (Fake blood dripping down his cheek.) Nathaniel: *Nose bleeds from the hotness.*
I'd love some scenes of him scaring the shit out of Chloe and Lila, flirting with Nathaniel, and being a hammy vampire in front of the Science Kids and Akuma Class.
Jean: *Dressed as the Phantom of the Opera* Daaaamn.
Nathaniel: *Dressed as Eraserhead*… He. Is. HOT! THAT’S MINE! HE’S MINE! *Shoves Ivan and Kim out of the way and runs into Marc’s arms* I SAW HIM FIRST! YA’LL BETTER BACK OFF!
Ivan: *Dressed as Jack Skellington* … Did he just-
Kim: *Dressed as Thor* I think he did.
Alix: *Dressed as Miss Joke* Never underestimate the power of a short bisexual.
Louis: *Dressed as Bob Ross* Maybe he can suck some actual talent out of someone and put it in you!
Nathaniel: *Sitting in Marc’s lap* SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH, LOUIS!
Louis: … Ouch.
Lila: *Dressed as Queen Elizabeth 1; walks in on Marc who appears to be biting Nath’s neck in the locker room* AAAAAHHHH!! *Runs away screaming*
Marc: Vat is her problem?
Nathaniel: Don’t know, don’t care; just keep licking the frosting off my neck. Who the hell even started that food fight?
Austin A: *Dressed as Heather C* GUYS! MARC’S A VAMPIRE!
Austin B: *Dressed as Bill Cipher* Yeah, it’s a great costume, right?
Austin A: NO! Listen to me! I walked into the bathroom, and there he was at the sink, and he didn’t have a reflection in the mirror*
Austin T: *Dressed as Christine Daaé* … Armsy, have you been eating too much candy?
Austin A: You’re not listening to me! *Austin Q slaps him across the face* Did you just slap me?
Austin Q: *Dressed as Kim Possible* I was calming you down!
Austin A: How was that supposed to calm me down?! There is a vampire in this fucking school and he’s gonna suck my blood!
Austin T: Why would he suck your blood?
Austin A: ‘Cause, look at me.
Kim: Guys, it’s time to face facts… We have to kill Marc.
Akuma Class sans Nath: …
Marinette: *Dressed as Zatanna* WHAT?! Dude! We’re not killing Marc!
Kim: Why not? He’s a vampire.
Max: *Dressed as Electra from Starlight Express* Kim, for the last time, Marc is not a vampire. It’s just a very realistic costume.
Nino: *Dressed as Bruno* He did bite into that apple without his fangs coming off.
Myléne: *Dressed as Sally* Oh, and his skin started getting all smokey when he was outside in the sun.
Juleka: *Dressed as Jason* And he bit Nath’s neck.
Adrien: *Dressed as Harry Potter* Nath is looking kinda paler than before.
Marinette: Guys, Marc is not a vampire, okay? And if he is, then may I be struck by- *Thunder crashes outside* … May a bat fly through that door in the next three seconds.
Marinette: See? He’s not-
*A bat flies in through the window*
Kim: *Jumps into Max’s arms* KILL IT! KILL IT NOW!
*The students all hide under their desks for a few seconds, and and Marinette pokes her head out, she finds Marc sitting atop the teacher’s desk*
Marinette: … Marc… Did you see a bat just now?
Marc: Can’t say that I have.
*Thunder and lightning crash outside, cutting the lights off, and when they come back on, Marc’s nowhere in sight*
Marinette: … Okay, I’m sold.
Alix: I still think this is bull.
Denise: *Dressed as Luisa* Guys, he’s not a vampire.
Alix: Told you.
Nino: Then kindly explain why he has no reflection!
Cosette: Dressed as Static Shock; about to answer, but pauses* … Maybe… He’s so pale that… The light-
Alya: *Dressed in a Clovers cheer uniform* Mhm. Mhm. The light. Go on.
Cosette: … I don’t know, man! He cosplays! He’s got the mechanics of it all down! He could cosplay as Hagakure!
Reshma: *Dressed as Sailor Moon* He somehow made the blood smell like copper.
Ivan: Did you hear yourself just now?
Simon: *Dressed as a Ghostbuster* If Marc’s a vampire, then… I’m the Queen of England.
*Just then, Marc walks by with Nathaniel unconscious in his arms*
Lacey: *Dressed as Tinker Bell* Marc… Whatcha doin’?
Marc: Nath fell asleep. I’m just taking him… Somevhere. *Leaves*
Marinette: So, Simon, would you like your crown to be silver or gold?
Chloé: *Dressed as Elle Woods; going into the basement* How dare she make me grab another stupid textbook from down here?! Ugh! Now where are they- *Sees a coffin in the middle of the room* … H-how long has this been here?
*Going against every instinct, Chloé opens the coffin and screams when she finds Nathaniel in it*
Chloé: WHAT THE HELL?!
Marc: You shouldn’t have come down here, Miss Bourgeois.
Chloé: … AAAAAHHH!! *Runs upstairs* VAMPIRES ARE REAL!
Nathaniel: *Groggily wakes up* Hey, is everything alright?
Marc: Yes, go back to sleep, Nath.
Nathaniel: Alright. *Shuts the coffin door*
Aurore: *Dressed as Eclipsa* …
Marc: …
Aurore/Marc: … *Nod to each other, open their parasols, and go their respective ways*

Let your S(e)oul take you where you long to be (v) - Christines, Raouls, and the last of this review
Finally finally fishing my reviews of August 8 and 9 shows (two months later, so embarrassing)
Christine
The first Christine I've seen is Song Eun-hye who showed herself to be a young wide-eyed Christine with a powerful belt (she gave an especially hair-standing Wishing). She was already fearful of the Phantom from the start and for most of the performance and it seemed being agape was her main play of the character until eventually becoming sympathetic to the Phantom (Cho Seung-woo) by Final Lair. It's a bit typical for me and I was looking for more variation, but from what I'm reading from her current performances, she's been even more emotive. I think she's still very much a work in progress but actually off to a good start.
Son Ji-soo reminded me of those 1950s/1960s film actresses with her physical features and the way she sang (very classical trained). That kind of presence hooked me in. At first she showed herself to be an excited Christine who was inspired by singing and apparently by her unseen mentor (giving her a joyful Think of Me and even POTO title song). I like how she uses her hands in her acting especially to reach out to her co-stars (from Carlotta in Il Muto, to Raoul in AIAOY/Notes reprise, and to the Phantom (Jeon Dong-seok) when he's commanding her to leave the lair), I like handy Christines in general. Overall, I find myself leaning toward SJS's Christine as having a more unique impression, but I would love to see how SEH is now.
Raoul
Hwang Gun-ha has...the most unusual Raoul voice I've ever heard. In that it's way too deep. He surprises me each time he sings. Because he looks like this kpop idol but with such a low register, there was somewhat a disconnect. And when he's angry he gets ANGRY. Definitely kept me alert.
Song Won-geun played an ever-reliable Raoul and ticked the boxes of a conventional portrayal. He is the Raoul you'd expect to see, gentlemanly, protective, and heroic, but nothing that really jumps out, it's all by the label.
Notables
Kim Ah-sun (Madame Giry) - She looked the role and sang it well. (sorry kdrama geek out moment) she reminded me of Kim Seo-hyung in Sky Castle who was this tutor from hell, and that kind of gothic stern presence made her a very effective Giry.
Park Ha-rim (Piangi) - Loved this guy's enthusiastic portrayal of Piangi and he is always a crowd-favorite because of how he extends his notes. I like how his character fanboys over Carlotta and actually becomes quietly impressed with Christine during the Don Juan Rehearsals. His was such a dynamic portrayal.
Han Bo-ra / Lee Ji-young (Carlotta) - Han Bo-ra was the comedic Carlotta and Lee Ji-young was the elegant one. Both delightful in their own ways and both worked well with Park Ha-rim with LJY even lovingly coaching him during the Don Juan Rehearsals.
Shin Jae-hee (Buquet) - I like how his Buquet is natural and not exaggerated, he actually seems to be spooked out by the Phantom, too, which makes me feel sorry about his death. Also the corpse is such a deadringer of the actor it's legit terrifying.
Yoon Young-seok (Andre) - Last but not the least, our Phantom veteran is now a manager with possibly an anxiety disorder. It's funny knowing he was the terror who haunts the opera house now he gets easily spooked up and he has his hand to his heart. Such a poor guy, but also cute at times.
No doubt their performances are even better two months after I've seen them so definitely take these reviews as dated. I'm glad the show is going to Daegu but sad that not all cast members are going. This time I look forward to all your reviews!! And I sincerely hope everyone can have a chance to see this masterpiece of a production at the Charlotte Theatre to experience it yourselves.
Thank you so much for reading and apologies for how long it's taken!!

it's been a fruitful year of discoveries, rediscoveries and deeper dives into discographies i wasn't as familiar with so coming up with a trimmed-down selection was challenging but here's my own 2023 "wrapped"!
2023 RELEASES
💿 "genshin impact: millelith's watch" soundtrack disc 1 [and it has to be disc 1], hoyo-mix — i know nothing about it other than it being a video game, loove the music tho
💿 "ok. respira" + "red light (EP)", elodie — are they good? it's radio-friendly pop and EDM but do i like them? absolutely
🎵 i wanted to include paranoïa, angels, true love by christine and the queens but despite having listened to it in its entirety a bunch of times i definitely picked favourites and slightly ignored the rest? so: "tears can be so soft" + "angels crying in my bed" + "marvin descending" + "to be honest"
🎵 same hat for so!yoon!'s episode 1: love -> "in (void)" [one of thee most intros] + "smoke sprite" [give me a solo version i beg u] + "till the sun goes up" + "exit"
🎵 "de selby (part 1)", hozier
🎵 "nothing lasts forever", sevdaliza feat. grimes
🎵 "tik tak tok", silica gel feat. so!yoon!
🎵 "床 (lie)", no party for cao dong
🎵 "ghosts again", depeche mode
K-POP (and related) CORNER: "psycho", jun 🌸 "god of music" + "super" + "fire", seventeen 🌸 "the rizzness" + "guilty", taemin 🌸 "rover" + "sinner", kai 🌸 "coolAs", key 🌸 "o (circle)", onew 🌸 "10x", shinee 🌸 "nevertheless", billlie 🌸 "golden hour", mark lee 🌸 "screen time", epik high feat. hoshi 🌸 "attitude", fromis_9 🌸 "fighting", BSS feat. lee youngji 🌸 "better things" + "drama", aespa
(RE)DISCOVERED IN 2023
💿 listened to kino for the first time, fell in love! i've had the black album (кончится лето/konchitsya leto, муравейник/muraveynik & кукушка/kukushka 😘👌) on rotation lately but i have a bunch of faves you can send an ask about if you like <3
💿 delved deeper into cocteau twins' discography but i basically played "heaven or las vegas" [been waiting for a copy to drop at the local used cd stores to no avail] and this faye wong x cocteau twins playlist *a lot*
💿 also had a massive depeche mode phase in the spring; tended to stick to their 80s/90s releases and "violator" is probably their most popular album but for good reason!! do check "waiting for the night" from it + this is my tag for further track recs
💿 "bié records meets shika shika" — it's a project from two labels, one beijing-based the other argentinian, whose artists marry electronica with ambient and folk music; they matched their artists together to remix each other and this compilation is the result
💿 "raven", kelela
💿 "trececerotres (EP)", daniela lalita
🎵 "a pure person (單純的人)", lim giong — one of the best opening scenes in cinema ever! millennium mambo's soundtrack has been temporarily taken down from spotify so you have to look for it in chinese characters
🎵 "dancing elephants", rochelle jordan — specifically this performance
🎵 "yo-soul", lim kim
🎵 "spring breeze", hiperson — love love the production here
🎵 teresa teng's cover of "長崎は 今日も雨だった" (a rainy day in nagasaki)
