Go on national television and tell everyone that you just staged a jailbreak...refuse to dye your hair a normal color...” Your mother scolded as she set the gifts down inside before block the door as if Bucky couldn’t just lift her out of the way if he chose to. “I’ve forgiven all of that but this, young lady, is where I draw the line! This is my house and I am not letting this killer inside of it.” Bucky’s face grew hard as he watched your heart break at the harsh words she had for you, pulling you in close, to stroke your hair. Crystal blue eyes grew steely as he looked up to her, seeing what Tony was talking about. What she said about him he didn’t really care about, in his mind those words were all true...but for a mother to speak so harshly about their only daughter...

“Actually Shirley this is my house and I want to see my granddaughter.” Your Nana interjected from inside as her feeble bones worked her old body to stand. “Who does she have with her?” Your mom reminded your Nana about the Winter Soldier and all the terrible things he’s done on the news in the last few years.

“It’s not his fault!” You argued, every bit of you growing red with anger. “And he was granted a formal pardon! He was brainwashed! According the the Supreme Court James Buchanan Barnes had about as much say in doing what he did as I did in being a mutant.”

Nana stood up strait hearing the name. She lived through the war, she remembered the news reels. “Shirley you move yourself from that door right now and show Sergeant Barnes some respect. I may be old but I’ll never be too old to crack you one. That man saved your father’s life in the war. If it wasn’t for him you wouldn’t be. Now move.”

Inside the air smelled of cookies and pies of all different varieties. From the door he could see straight into the kitchen to an old woman creating the source of the smell as she pulled a fresh batch of sugar cookies from the oven. Her silvered hair was pinned neatly back in a style reminiscent of the 40s, and her clothing matched.

“Thank you ma’am.” Bucky smiled politely up to Nana as you both made your way inside, dropping your luggage at the door for now. Looking at the small woman Tony’s warnings echoed in the back of his mind, ‘the little old lady is the worst.’...how? She seemed so sweet.

“Nana, I thought you always said that Captain America saved Papa?” You asked in a whisper as you gave her a hug, all she replied with was a ‘shhh’ and a feeble pat to the side of your head. “Come on Bucky, my room’s upstairs.” You said with a smile, wiping the hint of tears from your eyes as you grabbed your bags. As you both traversed the stairs your mom and Nana looked to each other, concern all over their faces.

The stairwell was lined with pictures of you throughout your younger years...huh, so that was what color your hair was before you changed...But never anything after, no rainbow splendor. “Why aren’t there any recent pictures?” He asked absentmindedly as he followed up to what was once your room, untouched since the last time you came home for a visit. The walls looked to be wallpapered in sheet music, he couldn’t think of anything else more fitting for your room than that. Upon closer inspection he realized, however, it was not some random spattering of pages. It looked to be new ontop of old...something your dad had started when you were a baby by covering the walls in the greatest of classical composers, from there it built up as you aged. With a huff you set down your things before flopping yourself onto the bed pushing the rainbow mess from your face. Your eyes darted out the window watching flecks of snow dance to the ground until the thought hit you….

You let your hands hover over your head as you listened...The nice thing about your room was it sat right above the kitchen, with an air vent close to your bed giving you access to all the amazing smells from below, and the sounds of both your parents working below. “MOM!” You shouted downward, “WHY ISN’T THERE THE TREE UP YET?” You of course were referring to the reusable one the family had gotten when you were a kid.

“BECAUSE A RACCOON GOT INTO THE ATTIC AND ITS RUINED” She answered.

“We can go get one if you had your heart set on it Doll. I don’t mind driving if you tell me where to go.” You afterall, did drive all the way from New York.

“That sounds great Buck.” You said as you looked up to him with a soft smile that tugged at his heart.

Oh wow, how do I start this? As you read from the title, I’ll ask you, what do YOU do you do in your free time? in simpler words, what are your hobbies? For me, well, I have a lot. I don’t want to sound boastful or whatever, but I do consider myself as a jack-of-all-trades, master of none. I even remember my senior high school quote for my yearbook

“A jack-of-all-trades master of none, but too lazy to master one.”

Oh! And just to make things a little enjoyable, I have a Spotify playlist for all the songs I’ll be mentioning in this blog, as well as some links to my works and videos if I have mentioned them!

I’m not going to bore you any longer, here are my hobbies – in no particular order. And who knows, you might want to start any hobbies in my list!

Kpop “Feel Good During a Drive” Playlist

I put together 9 kpop songs that would be great to play during a car ride. I’m always in my car alone and it’s very boring and eerily silent when there’s no one else there, so I ALWAYS play music in the car no matter how long the drive is. I could have made this list 100+ songs, but I picked out the most recent, best ones from my fave kpop song list.

I think this playlist would be perfect to play during a car ride and it also offers a variety of vibes that you can experience because sometimes you want to save yourself from boredom, but sometimes you also want to chill and relax.

1. Lee Gikwang - What You Like

I love to play this song because this song is very upbeat and it is extremely catchy. It’s one of those songs that you hum or bop your head along to. I love that the song pulls back at the end. It resolves very nicely which allows for a smooth transition into the next song. The lyrics are also very cute because the lyrics are directed to the listener as if he is singing the song to them so it’s very engaging. I am actually a huge fan of Gikwang and the group he is from, which is Highlight. This was his very first solo song/album so it was very exciting to hear what type of music he could release as a solo artist. I have been obsessed with this song since it came out and I am definitely not going to get tired of it any time soon!

2. BLACK6IX - Like A Flower

This is also one of my absolute favorite songs that I have been listening to non-stop lately. The instrumental is quite amazing too, so I also recommend checking it out (here is a link to it). This song is really good to play when you want to listen to something easy to the ear, but also upbeat. The sound almost melts into the ears and gives a feeling of slipping into another world. But then in the middle, it goes into a trap beat and one of the members raps and breaks you out of that entranced state for a moment. Playing this song makes me feel cool while I drive for some reason. Maybe it will have the same effect on you (which you won’t know until you try it) I actually found this song while I was browsing for more kpop songs to listen to (as if I didn’t have enough already) and I came across this one. This group is very new and this is actually their second song, but I have heard of them before because I actually checked out their first song when I saw it on a chart for a Korean music broadcasting show. They caught my interest, so I will definitely be looking forward to more songs like this because it is very different from what I’ve heard.

3. Jung Yong Hwa - That Girl (Feat. Loco)

We’re continuing with the upbeat music theme, but this song is different because it builds up with Loco’s amazing rap then the chorus right after. This song just has so many different colors and textures. It’s just a FUN song. The chorus is also very easy to sing along to or at least hum along to. I would be surprised to hear if you DIDN’T do a little dance while listening to this song. I came across this song while just clicking random songs in the recommended column and I looked at the thumbnail and went, “Oh! I know who that is!” because he is the main singer in a group called CNBLUE which I am semi-familiar with. So I wanted to hear what type of music he could offer if he goes solo. And I am quite impressed and intrigued.

4. AKMU - Dinosaur

I love this sister and brother duo so much. They are just such talented singers and composers. This song is absolutely amazing just like all the other songs in this playlist. You would be very surprised when you go through the different parts of the song. In the beginning, you would think that this song would be very laid back and acoustic, but then they slowly add EDM effects into it, and then the CHORUS. There are so many ups and downs in this song; parts that are silent and slow and parts that are full of combinations of sounds. This song is a very easy listen and is the type that you would play with the windows open while the breeze flows through the car (obviously most favorably in the spring or early summer). Their voices also harmonize very nicely (like for all their songs) which is so satisfying to listen to. It’s impossible to not be in a good mood while listening to it.

5. One - Heyahe

Okay, time to lay back on this one. It’s an easy listen, but unlike the other songs in this playlist, this song is the one to play in order to calm down and get engulfed by the music. When this song comes on, it’s time to let go. This song just puts the listener in a peaceful state of mind. It’s nice to take a break from roaring bass blasting through the speakers. My friend made my listen to this song a few times and I actually didn’t like it at first because I was not the type of person who likes laid back, chill music, but my taste in music changed since that time, so I love this song now. It’s best to be more open to different types of music.

6. NCT 127 - Cherry Bomb

Speaking of bass blasting through the speakers, that is exactly what you get when you play this song. So if you like to roll down the windows or feel the car rattling after every beat, this is perfect for you. If you don’t like loud ringing in your ears, then this is a song you should probably skip. If you haven’t noticed already, I LOVE this song and I love to play this in the car too. It’s a weird and interesting song. I didn’t like it first listen either, but I love it now and this happened to the rest of my friends, so obviously this song has the ability to grow on people. You should give the song a few listens before making an opinion about it. And for those non-Korean speakers out there, the “If you’re happy and your know it, clap your hands” line should be familiar to you, and “I’m the biggest hit on the stage” is constantly repeating over and over again, so this song is the perfect song to scream sing along to.

7. Wanna One - Energetic

This song is cool because it starts off as a slower song with piano chords and then it builds up to a beat drop at the chorus. Of course beat drops are amazing and they magically make a person hyped up. The song is titled “Energetic” for a reason. This song makes the listener energized! This is for when you find that your car ride is getting stale. This song is a perfect pick me up (Ha, get it “Pick Me Up”? Kpop stans know what I’m talking about- okay lame joke). No one wants a boring car ride and with this song, it’s impossible to have a boring car ride. Everyone was listening to this song and group, and I thought I would jump on the bandwagon and it was one of the best decisions of my life. So maybe it’s time for you to jump on the bandwagon too.

8. Sunmi - Gashina

This song is a nice change from the rest of the songs because Sunmi has a different type of voice from the rest of the artists in this playlist. She definitely went for the synth pop sound for pretty much the whole song which could make for a fun experience during a car ride. This is also another song with a beat drop. Beat drops for the chorus is such a fun way to get the listener more engaged and into the song because it makes the ears perk up and go “Wow that was so unexpected but also amazing!”. I came across this song also by browsing various korean artists and songs in the recommended tab. When I first came across this song, it was love at first listen and I couldn’t wait to get the song on my phone just so I can play it in the car.

9. MONSTA X - Newton

I thought this song was perfect to end this playlist because they’re even on a road trip in the music video! This song was intended to be a summer song, so this is one of those songs that you play blasting through the speakers while driving down the street with the windows rolled down. It just puts you in a good mood. It’s a kid-friendly, fun, happy song. I’m a huge fan of Monsta X and their music and this was quite different from their usual releases. It’s refreshing to listen to an artist that is musically versatile.

Well, I hope you like this playlist and I hope you enjoy listening to it during your next car ride whether you are the driver or the passenger. And don’t hesitate to play it with other guests in the car! I’m sure they’ll enjoy it too. This playlist is also perfect to play when you’re sitting at home doing nothing. It’s a nice way to put yourself in a good mood. I listen to most of these songs when I want to cheer myself up after being in a “meh” mood. Music is good for the soul.

5 Ways to Amp Up STEAM Learning in the Classroom

Vicki: Here we are with my good friend, Aaron Maurer @coffeechugbooks talking about five ways to amp up STEAM in our classroom. Now, he has a non profit 212 STEAM labs, but he also works with his whole district to help everyone be amazing in STEAM and with technology. So, Aaron, what is our first way?

STEM Idea #1: Teach with Passion

Aaron: Yes. The very first way, I think it’s one that we hear time and time again, but I also know that it’s one that we tend to overlook, because we have so much on our plate especially as teachers.

And number one, is to teach with passion. And what I mean by that is, what is it that gets you excited to get out of bed, to go teach in the morning? I think sometimes we lose sight of that — because there’s standards, and there’s new initiatives, and there’s new acronyms, and there’s new WHATEVER the thing might be for the year.

And it gets muddied waters so one thing I always work with teachers is, “Get it back to ground zero. What is it that just jacks you up that makes you want to come to school and be with kids and do this work that we started for, when we first got into the classroom?”

And start with THAT to send out the energy not just from you, but then it just starts to absorb within your kids and your classroom. Things can just take off from there.

Vicki: Yeah, you know, teacher engagement comes before student engagement, doesn’t it?

Aaron: Yes, yes, absolutely. If you’re not pumped to be there, the kids feel that, and the classroom can fall apart very, very quickly.

Although we’re talking STEAM here, remember that it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. There is an artistry that you interject into the classroom as a teacher when you bring your passions into the classroom.

I’ve seen dancing teachers, music-making teachers, and teachers using art in the classroom. This is a fantastic question to ask – what’s your passion? Can you use it to teach? I bet if you think about it, it is likely possible that many passions can be used to engage students.

STEAM Idea #2: Find out what students love

Vicki: Yeah. What’s our second?

Aaron: Number two is this: You know if we look at the latest craze everyone is tired of talking about – fidget spinners – but if I take that topic there, it’s to also that as you’re building relationships with kids, find out what they love.

And if you were to take something like fidget spinners – and we did this a lot in my spaces – we started looking at it. As opposed to looking at it as something being annoying, this is something that they were FASCINATED with. All kids were just fascinated by trying to get one, and so we started to figure out – OK, so let’s make our own. What goes into that?

And the next thing you know, we’ve got kids doing like precise measurements and doing CAD drawings and figuring out different weight distributions. Now we’re talking about speed and momentum. And we’re doing all these things.

And so I know that fidget spinners—something that everyone is sick and tired of talking about, but it brings to light something that’s really important – the idea that student choice is important, but student voice is even more important. And are we truly listening? And can we take these opportunities of their excitement and find ways to bring it into our classroom?

Fidget spinners can be used to teach. I saw a science teacher use them to teach magnetism. While our sponsors do not influence content of the show, it happens that today’s sponsor, Teacher Vision is giving a free fidget spinner math lesson. It is a good example of what Aaron is talking about.

Vicki: Yeah, so you know, whether it’s a bottle flipper or a fidget spinner… And I remember when I was growing up in the eighties – I’m going to show my age – it was those little paper footballs, and I remember one time I had a math teacher who used those paper footballs to actually teach some geometry, and it was awesome because we loved those. So, whatever it is, just pull it in. OK, what’s our third?

STEAM Idea #3: Tackle real world problems with students

Aaron: Number three is, I think sometimes we feel too much stress and anxiety as we try to find these cutting edge ideas, like we think we always have to be super creative. Obviously that’s always a goal of ours, but I think something that often gets overlooked is that with all the tools and technologies and resources people have, look at real world problems. Some of the best ideas are things that you don’t have to create yourself. I think this is another piece that often gets overlooked.

Pay attention to the news, read the magazines or the blogs or the social media. Pay attention to things that people are talking about, and look for ways to say, “OK, can we bring this into the classroom?” Now we’ve got an authentic audience. We’ve got kids invested in actually trying to create positive change in the world.

Moving forward, as opposed to always thinking you have to create things on your own, the world is giving us many, many problems that need solving. And kids are amazing at it, because most kids haven’t developed the filter or the mindset that they can’t do it. So, tap into the real world as opposed to creating all this stress on yourself trying to come up with something innovative.

Vicki: Yeah. Why do we have to make problems? We’ve got enough problems without making up more, right? (laughs) OK, what’s our fourth?

Real world problems are everywhere. Look for them and bring them into class.

STEAM Idea #4: “Hold onto your crayons”

Aaron: Right? (laughs) This one is going to sound a little “out there,” and it’s something that I’ve been working a lot on with teachers lately. I keep telling them, “Hold on to your crayons.” And what I mean by that is what happens is that we lose the spirit of being a kid… and getting back to the essence of how exciting learning can be.

I look at my six-year-old as she continues to make “slime” and we’ve got more slime messes in our house than I care to admit, but she’s constantly trying to reiterate new processes. And she doesn’t get upset if it doesn’t work.

Or I looked at my son who’s in middle school, and he’s taking apart old toys and trying to merge them and make them happen. And he’s not sitting there thinking, “This is science, and this is writing, and this is math.” They’re just learning, and they’re just exploring.

And I think that sometimes as adults, especially when we start talking about STEM or STEAM or whatever buzzword it is that your school uses, we muddy the learning. We think we have to have data points on every single thing. We think we have to have spreadsheets and forms and all this. And I always tell people, “Just hold onto your crayons.” Learning should be exciting, and it should be engaging. In real world learning, we don’t stop to think about what subject it is. We just DO.

Our curiosity and our intrigue and our love and our passion for learning just take us places. And so, I think sometimes, we overcomplicate the learning, because every time we put in a checkpoint, the learning stops momentarily. So, sometimes as educators we are the biggest obstacle. We just have to get out of the way and let the kids move and let their questions drive what it is that we’re trying to achieve.

Vicki: I love that. “Hold onto your crayons.” You’ve really given me something to think about. And I’m going to be quoting you on that, Aaron, even in some keynotes and speeches. I love it. OK, what’s our fifth?

STEAM Idea #5: Create your classroom with a box but the top is open

Aaron: I was just on a skype call with an amazing educator from High Tech High named Mike Strong, so I want to make sure that he gets credit for it. And he was talking about how as much as we celebrate, and there’s a lot of push and talking about student choice and voice. We still have to have some parameters. If things are just so wide open, there’s this like paralyzing effect on us where we don’t know where to begin. He was talking with myself and some educators, was “Create your classroom with a box, but the top is open,” meaning that you can build parameters.

It’s OK to have confines to what it is that you’re trying to teach and have kids learn, but leave the top open so the possibilities are truly endless in terms of where kids can take it. And I just love that visual, because I think that sometimes we have this pressure, or we get this idea that when we talk about student voice and choice, it should just be whatever… You know, like the Genius Hours, or Passion Projects, which are great, but the reality is, we’ve got standards, we have assessments, we have things that we have to be able to hold ourselves accountable. And so I think it’s OK to build parameters. It’s OK to have confines. But make sure you leave the top open, so kids can climb out of that box and just blow our socks off with the idea that they can come up with.

Vicki: I cannot stress how important this is, Aaron, because when I do Passion Projects or Genius Projects, I have to have some parameters. I mean I have some objectives, whether it’s presentation skills or whatever, to give the students, because you’re right. If you just say, “Create…” they’re like, “Ummm… What???” (laughs)

Aaron: (laughs) Yeah! Yeah! But you know, we’re the same way as adults, too. If we were to go to some workshop or PD, and it was just completely wide open, most of us would sit in a state of panic saying, “OK, someone please give me some direction.” It’s just human nature.

Some teachers have a bad experience with 20% time or Genius hour because they assemble many materials and say just “play.” Then, when students don’t know what to do or misbehave, they wonder why.

And really, it can amp up everything from technology but really any kind of teaching. These are a lot of truths that we need to bring in.

Aaron: Absolutely. And I think that’s one thing we’ve got to keep in mind when we’re talking STEAM or STEM or whatever acronym. At the end, we’re just trying to get back to the basics of just good quality teaching.

Vicki: And good quality teaching is remarkable, isn’t it?

Aaron: It is. It is. (laughs)
