Let‘s talk about Cosplay Motivation! :]

Lack of motivation and the search for new inspiration - Every artist is quickly unsettled by the incredible flood of online content. The constant pressure to produce content. Especially as an artist with a larger online presence and fan base. It's easy to forget why we're doing all this in the first place! And it´s totally valid to feel intimidated and overwhelmed. Been there- You´re not alone.  

One thing that makes cosplay so special is gathering and sharing at conventions. After little to no conventions in the past 1 1/2, no group cosplays, no last minute crunching (!) and almost exclusively online interaction it is difficult to keep one's motivation.

Soo... How to stay focused and motivated for future projects? 

There are alot of cosplayers out there writing about this specific topic and I wanted to share my personal experience and tips ;-)

1. A fresh new start

A thing that helps me is to clean and organise my workspace new - after I finish a small cosplay or even between worksteps of a bigger project. Create a place where you feel comfortable and inspired to work! Sometimes, something as simple as rearranging your work table, changing your work setup or pack away all your sewing supplies in a neat way, can help you find some inspiration to create something new!

2. Start simple

Sometimes a big project feels incredible intimidating and you cannot bring yourself to start. Reletable? 

I personally always like to start with a costest, testing out some makeup for the character I want to portray and make due with things I already find at home. Scribble cosplay ideas on a paper. What is a cosplay you always dreamed of making? Make a small closet cosplay of your favorite character!

Make your life a little easier! I´m a person who likes making my entire cosplay from scratch, starting from the patterns which is unbelievable time consuming, especially if it´s a bigger cosplay or much detailed armor pieces etc...  Sometimes it´s just nice to order a premade pattern online or commission a prop from your favorite small cosplay business.

3. Find your inspiration

Found a person, who is working on the same cosplay as you? Perfect! Maybe they can give you some useful tips or advice for the crafting progress and you can start exchange some positivity and love for the character you both love. 

Remind yourself of the reason you started a specific cosplay. A character /costume you immediately fell in love with the moment you started watching a new show? Or a badass dream cosplay you wanted to do for years? Rewatch the movie/show or replay the game your cosplaying from. That always does the trick for me :]

in looking back over my 10 years of cosplaying, something that’s so amazing to me is seeing my growth as a cosplayer and it is the most apparent in my #rocklee cosplay. it started out as a pieced together nightmare in 2010 but by 2012 it was like looking at an entirely different person. cosplaying Lee has always meant a lot to me, and i love seeing the difference that time made with this costume. For me, Lee may never be perfect—it’s 2018 and I still want to fix things on this costume! But man, looking back at Lee from Fanime2010 to Fanime2012–the difference two years makes is astounding. I took a 3year break from cospalying Lee after Fanime2012 (minus some casual things), then another break after 2015, and so all the improvements to Lee that I’d had planned were put on hold but after cosplaying him to aB this year, I definitely hope to update him for next year. 🤗 ultimately what i’m saying with this post is: never give up! you can always get better. we all start somewhere, and we shouldn’t try to do anything but our personal best! Don’t get down on yourself if your costume isn’t perfect now. you have plenty of time to improve it if you want. What’s most important is having fun, making new friends, and living your best life! Because even when my Lee cosplay wasn’t great, in the moment none of that mattered. We all start somewhere and while some may start off with a natural talent, no one ever starts off perfect or excellent. Please don’t be so hard on yourself, also, please remember others how might seem like masters of their craft or profession also started off as a beginner and honed their skills to work for them, so while hard at times, also try not to compare yourself to someone else’s chapter. ⠀ .⠀ Many of us are so hard on ourselves for not being at a certain level yet, that we forget the perseverance and journey it takes to build yourself up. So I'd though I'd share a small step in my Clefable cosplay making process. First is the skirt design I originally drew for the cosplay, in the middle is the second is the redesigned digital version and at the bottom we see the final real life version. Cosplay for me is a process, I have to plan out every detail for my costumes and this is one of many processes I take to make my costumes. Sometimes they may not look like much but everyone puts lots of effort in what we make. That's what I love about cosplay every new costume is a different challenge and something we can use to improve on our abilities, weather it my be sewing, designing, prop/armor making, wig styling, make-up... etc. This costume had me practicing some old skills and made me learn new ones and that is what makes me proud of it.
