Charming Shamrock Applique
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
In honor of Saint Patrick's Day here is my first pattern!
If you have any questions, need help with anything, or I need to correct something, please let me know in the notes!
Notes:
I use American/Canadian terminology.
For experienced crocheters it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to complete. For beginners it may take up to 40 minutes.
Using the weight of yarn and size hook listed, the Shamrock is about 3 inches or 8 centimeters starting from the bottom of the stem to the top of one of the petals.
You can change the size of your Shamrock by decreasing or increasing the weight of yarn and size hook.
You will need:
Worsted weight yarn (weight 4). I used acrylic, but you can use any fiber.
Size 3.75 mm crochet hook (size F)
Scissors (or a sword if you're not a coward)
Hope
Abbreviations:
SS=Slip Stitch
CH=Chain
HDC=Half Double Crochet
DC=Double Crochet
DCDEC=Double Crochet Decrease
Round 1:
Make a magic ring, CH 2, DC 2 into magic ring. Turn work.
Round 2:
CH 2, DC 2 each in the next 2 stitches, in the top CH from Round 1, DC 1. Turn Work.
Round 3:
CH 2, DCDEC, CH 2, SS into next stitch, CH 2, DCDEC, CH 2, SS into the top CH from Round 2. As down the side of the petal until you reach the magic ring. SS into magic ring.
Repeat Rounds 1-3 two more times. You should now have 3 flower petals.
Stem:
Starting from the magic ring, CH 10, skip 2, into the next 8 CHs, DC 2, HDC 2, SC 4, SS into magic ring, finish off.
There you have it folks. Your very own shamrock. Woohoo.
If you finished, good job! You get a high five from yours truly! ✋
If you didn't finish, you get a participation award 🏅

Shamrock Sweater #1
I’ve done two shamrock (before you @ me, yes I know that technically these are four-leaf clovers, not shamrocks, but I don’t want to hear it) sweaters, and this was the first! I started it in February 2022 with the goal of finishing it for St. Patrick’s Day that year… and then abandoned it halfway put together for a full year 😅 I finally got around to finishing it the day before St. Patrick’s Day 2023, and wore it for the next three weeks straight, before it got too warm out for such a heavy sweater!
This sweater was made using this granny square pattern. I made 48 squares and blocked them, then connected them in two 2x4 panels for the front, one 5x4 panel for the back, and two 3x2 tubes for the sleeves, then seamed the sides, attached the sleeves, and seamed the top. The sleeves turned out a tad shorter than I had wanted, so I did five rows of crochet moss stitch to lengthen them before doing eight rows of 2x2 knit ribbing for the cuffs. Around the bottom, sides, and neck of the cardigan, I did five rows of crochet moss stitch. I used a US size I hook for all of the crocheting, and US size 8 knitting needles for the cuffs. The color pattern of the shamrocks is a checkerboard; half of the squares were made with the same green yarn I used for the joining, border, and cuffs, but unfortunately I lost the label of it, so I don’t know the brand or color name—however it is almost identical to Loops & Threads Impeccable in Moss, if you’re looking for something similar. The other squares were made with Loops & Threads Impeccable in Fern, Moss, and Forest. The white yarn is Vanilla Glaze by Caron O’Go Donuts. If you want to make a pattern similar to this, I would recommend gridding it out, because I had the wrong numbers of some of the secondary colors, so the one sleeve doesn’t match up with the pattern of the rest of the sweater.

Hello. Here's a video of me crocheting the first half (or so) of the Clover patch (download the PDF here). I'm left handed, but the stitch order is the same for both hands, so you'll be fine if you're right-handed (or watch it in a mirror and reflect on your privilege, maybe). I'll need to make a second half talking about borders, but all the stitches/techniques you'll need to know to finish the motif, along with my notation system, are covered.

WIP Wednesday -2023 Mar 15
Tumblr media
Outside of my introduction, this is my very first post here. Pressure is on. So, the first thing to know about me is that I often have multiple works in progress at any given time. My brain needs a project that will challenge me and help me learn and I need a project that's for relaxing in front of the tv. Add in the different yarn crafts I am balancing, and it means those 2 pieces have multiplied into many.
WIP Count: 5 3 crochet, 1 knit, 1 Tunisian crochet
In honor of St. Paddy's Day the end of this week, for my WIP for today and my very first post, I'll share the piece that is *mostly* finished. I got lazy in the middle of blocking, so this clover doily hasn't reached final form. Happy Ides of March - I only stabbed partially!
Tumblr media
I have a lot of thread inherited and unlabeled, so she is made out of a scrap yarn green, and a metallic silver from Aunt Lydia's, but both are size 10 thread. As much as I love how it looks, the silver is brutal to work with. It's mostly cotton as is typical with crochet thread, but it's also 12% metallic, and the strand within is notoriously scratchy and twists around itself as you work with it. I don't think I could ever make anything with just that thread specifically, but I am eager to use it up through accents like this one. If you can power through it, the effect is beautiful.
I've been using a 1.5mm crochet hook and you can find this pattern by Draiguna/Julia Hart, available here: Shamrock Soiree
I'll take bets on whether I'll have her blocked and finished by St. Paddy's Day. Any takers? No?

Last year they handed out saint Patrick day baggies to the students that had like cheap pens, some candy, and these little rubber shamrocks with faces and one student gave me his, so I balanced on my computer and any time a student messed with it I'd go "oh no not my little guy" well now they keep bringing me little guys for my computer. I've got a gang of six little guys, including a small crocheted octopus, an alien, a reindeer, two different ducks, and the original shamrock. The students also refer to them as my guys, and if they get knocked off or moved by another student they will now go "oh no not your little guy" and put it back where it belongs.
