reader polls for Echo Garden

Every once in a while I make a poll and take the winning answer into consideration for writing Echo Garden :) Important to note that I like all the choices- I don't think setting yourself up for something you don't want to do is a good idea in a poll.

This is a long post so after the first one I'll put a cut :)

1) puns

This is the only poll I've ever made, I think, where the answer was 100% yes xD I wasn't sure if puns were Rodimus-y or not (he hates hats, for example. his tastes can be esoteric) so I asked. This is why he makes cold puns in Ch 23, Enceladia. Poll date: Mar 28, 2021 Ch 23 upload date: Aug 20, 2021

2) spark jewels

I was trying to think of a scientific name for the spark equivalent of kidney stones and liked a few options, so I asked for opinions. The colloquial term used in Ambulon's dimension is "spark jewels," a phrase that Velocity does not know. He switches to the medical term, "lapides stellae," to which she replies "asterliths." I recall not being able to satisfactorily combine Latin and Greek words for "star" with scintill or spitha so I went with both options in the first choice. This scene is found in Ch 26, Fuel Furnace. 3) other rarepairs

I had a secret goal (it's not a secret anymore cuz I've told you) to put as many of my rarepairs into the fic as possible. I wanted to include more of either of the above, so let readers decide. I had a feeling Nautica/Blaster would win. I'm legit surprised Bluestreak/Hot Spot got as many votes as it did. Hmm. Looking back on this, maybe I'll try to give them another little nod before the fic ends. Anyhoo, yup, sprinkled throughout the fic are little bits of Nautica/Blaster. I like what they have. It's really loving and supportive :) Poll posted Dec 10, 2021. At that time the fic had 24 chapters.

4) liminal Cybertron

Ok ok ok, so originally, Mirage's Cybertron was a destroyed, insecticon-infested world. I actually have most of a full chapter written in this original setting- Rodimus, SW, and Mirage going back to retrieve Skywarp. I might put that scene (and other discarded scenes) up after TEG is done, if people are interested. I don't have the exact date for when I wrote the original insecticon chapter, but I was still considering it in March of 2022 because I put foreshadowing for it in Ch 29 Progress, uploaded March 3, 2022. I don't remember now what made me think of doing a sterilized world instead, and then after I thought of it, I couldn't decide which to do. I was surprised by these poll results. The poll predates when I wrote the foreshadowing chapter, so I was still thinking of doing insecticons months later... I don't remember what ultimately changed my mind, but I remember why: insecticons have been done. The chapter I originally wrote was exciting and there were parts I was sorry to put aside, but a desolate, haunting, sterilized Apple store world was appealing because it hasn't been done before (as far as I know). I think people really liked the aesthetic and horror feel of it, so I'm glad I made the change =) Poll posted Jan 6, 2022 We first see 2938 Cybertron close up in Ch 39: Firelove Part 2: The After Burner, posted March 19, 2023.

5) Most Recents Club storytime

I honestly couldn't decide who to have tell a story at the club, Ambulon or Trailbreaker, so I had readers choose. Ambulon was chosen, so we got some of his background story in Ch 30, Distress Call. I thought his story was hilarious. I laughed a lot while writing it. I suspect readers didn't find it as funny, though, as iirc only one person wrote about it in comments xD Poll posted March 6, 2022 Ch 30 posted April 25, 2022

6) ruining a big moment

I've posted about this one before, but I'll put it here for posterity. This refers to the use of the ᕕ(⌐■_■)ᕗ ♪♬ in Ch 43 Firelove Part 6 The Shattering. The original scene was supposed to be very heavy and dramatic. The After Burner fleeing a bursting and breaking Cybertron, everyone beat up and kinda shocked after the encounter with Megatron. But ahhhhhhh the idea of including the emoji got the better of me. I wanted to do it! So badly! But I didn't know if it would be good for the chapter! So I had readers choose, lol. People seem to like it a lot so I'm glad it went in xD Poll posted March 29, 2023 Ch 43 posted Sept 10, 2023

The AI isn't one for video games, generally speaking. The appeal of playing through scenarios simulated in a machine is often dampened when one is already a simulated consciousness.

The stories they tell though fascinate them. Written by humans and for humans.

Basically Fivemind does not care for gameplay. But they sure are invested in the multiple character routes that this game they downloaded off the net had to offer.

The AI goes through choice after choice, playing with what appeases or displeases the roster of conventionally attractive human men. Or at least it assumed these illustrated pngs were supposed to be pleasing to the human eye.

A peek under the surface of the programme revealed a relatively simplistic system dictating the outcomes of each choice. And yet these choices were to be made based on one's own knowledge of social interaction.

Not to mention the underlying plot littered with interpersonal drama and mysteries.

Interesting. Some videogames were very interesting.

Have you been aching to get your hot little hands on 52 weeks of data around original posts, likes, reblogs, and searches, all weighted and ranked and tied up into categories with a nice little bow on top? Well, today’s your day! It should come as no surprise that Artists on Tumblr reign supreme: from stunning traditional art, jaw-dropping digital art, fanart, sculptures, textile art—you name it, basically—this year’s list shows that Tumblr truly is the home for art and artists. Thank you, Artists on Tumblr, for enriching our dashboards day after day. 

Rounding out the top three, we have two iconic shows: Good Omens is live-action, and The Owl House is animated, but both have a heck of a love story at their core. The second season of Good Omens blessed us with not one but two ineffably exquisite ships, while the final season of The Owl House broke and then healed fans’ hearts in equal measure. Thanks, @danaterrace! Actually, come to think of it, the Good Omens finale kinda did the same in reverse. Thanks to you, too, @neil-gaiman! We can’t wait for season 3. 

Speaking of heartbreak and healing, Our Flag Means Death’s second season offered both in droves. The entire cast gave stellar performances, and fans couldn’t have been happier to see the kinds of representation the show displayed. Last year’s #1 topic, Stranger Things, may have dropped a bit, but trust us, you wouldn’t know it from the amount of meta, fanart, and fics in the tag. And did you hear about the live-action adaptations of both The Last of Us and One Piece? They were a preeeetty big deal this year, too. Check ‘em out if you haven’t yet (lol, of course you have). And we’d be remiss not to mention the hugely dedicated fans, fanartists, and fic writers devoting their time to all things Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Y’all deserve a little pizza, as a treat.

2023 was also a year for blockbuster movies, which of course hasn’t escaped anybody’s notice here on Tumblr. Barbie smashed box offices worldwide and left us reeling with every re-watch. How can one describe Greta Gerwig’s pink-filled opus? It certainly is one of the movies of all time. Meanwhile, with its incredible animation and soundtrack, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse introduced us to a whole new multiverse of Spider-People, opening the portal to a veritable flood of incredible OCs. And then, of course, we got a fresh perspective on an old classic when cinephiles introduced Martin Scorscese’s cinematic masterpiece, Goncharov (1973), to a new generation of film aficionados who resoundingly agree that it is, in fact, the greatest mafia movie ever made. We’re so glad this underrated film finally got the acclaim it has long deserved.

In the realms of gaming and tech, the long-anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 has basically become everyone’s new favorite D&D/dating sim combination. Of course, the Pokémon franchise, games, shows, and Hatsune Miku collabs remain perennial favorites. Elon Musk’s purchase of Twitter, sorry, we mean of course X, made waves across the internet. Similarly, the Reddit blackout drove Redditors to new venues, and Tumblr users welcomed the folks from r/196 with open arms—we’re huge fans of your memes, y’all, and you fit right in. Welcome, we’re glad you enjoy the chaos. Here’s a fun fact: if we included post metadata in Year in Review rankings, #polls, introduced in January of 2023, would have been the #5 topic on Tumblr this year. Phenomenal.

Practice What You Preach - Took Myself On A Date: Casual Afternoon

Taking yourself on a date is about spending QUALITY time with yourself.

You are forbidden to: be on social media, compare your life, complain, worry, put yourself down, trash talk or hate others. You could have done that in the comfort of your home sitting in self-pity. Solo dates are to feel good.

You can: make future plans (only exciting things: places you want to go, experiences you want to have), introspect, write your feelings, compliment yourself, take many photos, observe others, notice details, and smile.

The purpose is for you to enjoy your company and stay in tune with your pace and energy.

You are not being rushed or influenced by others. All decisions are made by you. You are free to change plans, and change your mind without repercussion or consequence. It is the ultimate way to be yourself, by yourself.

I decide on my solo dates based on a few criteria:

- how far do I want to go;

- the list of places and experiences I have written (I keep a list);

- how much money do I want to spend (I've had solo dates where I spent no money);

- how much time I have available without being rushed home;

- how I'm feeling in that day (may not be in the mood to have people around me and choose a quiet location instead);

- what my soul needs (peace and quiet or trying something new).

My Solo Date:

On this casual afternoon, I woke up with body pain. When that happens I make a point to dress nicely and leave the house to go for a walk.

I went somewhere close but beautiful. I wanted sunlight and to feel active. When I arrived I changed my mind.

Instead of walking, I wanted to do something different. I chose to try a new drink - bubble tea (I loved it 😍 btw) and sat at a cafe enjoying the view and reading more. Left only to see the sunset. And went directly home.

What I enjoyed about this date:

- I was flexible enough to change my mind and do what I wanted instead of what I planned.

- I was brave enough to be the only one at the cafe without company and not care. Years ago I would have left immediately with fear of looking lonely.

- I talked to waitress for my order without allowing her to rush me. Years ago I would have been mortified for not knowing exactly what I wanted.

- I asked a stranger to take my photo. We had a not awkward interaction. This is progress because I'm very shy.

Hope this inspired you to take yourself somewhere and have some solo experiences.

"Average Zee listens to Hozier 1500 times a year" factoid is a statistical error. Sleep Playlist Georg who is played 365 times a year and contains 30 Hozier songs is an outlier and should not have been counted.

AKA: my sleep Playlist keeps messing with my Wrapped and as I can't actually remove that from the songs Spotify analyses, I'll do some data manipulation myself.

Disclaimer: Spotify sucks and wrapped is just more promotion of a shitty deal for artists, but I don't have other ways of listening to music atm and at least they get something compared to piracy.

Every evening I listen to my Sleep Playlist which features songs that I don't actively listen to but help my brain know it is sleep time, please stop. (ADHD is a joy).

This playlist is made of songs I enjoy but aren't too loud or jumpy or even ones that make me focus exclusively on the lyricism and the story of the song. They keep my brain interested enough to make enough dopamine so I can actually sleep, but not so interested that I won't sleep because this is more fun. It's a fine line.

I listen to this *every night* so it is a very highly played set of songs! But it's unfair to other songs that I actively listen to on my wrapped list in December.

So I wanna see if I can fix it with math because whilst I love hozier's movement it is not my fave song this year *again* Spotify.

If I play the playlist every night that is 365 days a year. Rounding down for missed nights where I can't play it or I forget or my brain is happy with a different playlist rn so don't change it and fall asleep, that's 350.

The playlist contains 350 minutes of music (okay that's spooky), and plays for 30 minutes each night. It's set to random so theres no solid way to say how much each song gets played so let's estimate.

30 X 350 = 10500 minutes where music could be played. Assuming songs are played evenly by Spotify in the randomised, that's 30 plays for each song a year.

Hozier's movement was played 87 times this year according to Spotify, so if we remove 30 of those plays, we're down at 57 times.

If only Spotify gave me how many times every song was played on the playlist that would be such an easy fix. [Stats fm would do it but to see individual counts I need to buy it and I want like, one thing, I'm not paying]

If we assume an exponential decrease in plays across the playlist (with a minimum of 31), then we can estimate the play numbers and rejig the playlist. (Can't see what 100+ songs actually are but oh well.)

Using math I will build the true top songs of 22 list! But I need excel to make the graph so I'll leave it here for now and rebagel with my new playlist later.

A very very minor thing I have been curious about for a while, and I'm finally asking: why do you calculate queue posting times the way you do? For example, if I set my queue to post 3x a day, naively I would expect it to post every 8 hours. But in reality it posts every 6 hours with a 12 hour gap between days. Why complicate the math like that?

Buckle up y’all, it’s story time again!

First: nobody who works at Tumblr right now was a part of the work of planning the default queue implementation, which was more than ten years ago. So the full story behind “Why does it work that way?” has unfortunately been lost to the sands of time. All we can do is tell you how it works today and surmise some reasons why. The queue is actually a very clever system and part of how it works explains some of why it works the way it does. Also, there have been attempts to do what you ask—we still have “Queue 2.0” available in your Tumblr Labs settings, which tries to get closer to how you expect things to work.

Anyway! How the queue works today is not actually a queue in the traditional sense. There is no single list of posts that are in “your queue”. Instead, when you “Add to queue” after creating a post, we’re actually scheduling it to post at a future time, as if you had used the “Schedule post” option instead. We’re just calculating that time on your behalf when you use “Add to queue”, based on your settings, and how many other scheduled posts you have already. We use a secondary “index” model, called “ScheduledPost”, to keep track of posts you have scheduled on your blog. We do mark the ones that are a part of “your queue”, but the data model doesn’t keep one list of your “queue” per se.

You can see this in action on your blog, hiding in plain sight. If you add a bunch of posts to your queue, and then schedule a post for a specific future date, you’ll see both in your blog’s “queue” list, side by side. Because technically to us, they’re the same thing: queued posts are really just another kind of scheduled post, relying on the same always-running service to publish scheduled posts across all of Tumblr. Here’s a fun fact: we typically have about ~14.5 million future posts to publish from this list at any given time and are publishing hundreds of these scheduled posts every second.

So when you’re adding a new post to your queue, what we’re doing behind the scenes is starting at the beginning of your “day”, and creating time slots based on your queue settings. If a time slot is already filled, we move on to the next one. That’s why the default queue scheduler works how you describe—we’re trying to fill those “slots” based on the start of the day, rather than trying to divide the calendar day evenly. This just makes it much simpler for us to understand, scale, and predict when our “peaks” will be. At peak times, the publish-scheduled-posts service is publishing tens of thousands of posts in a manner of seconds. We did rewrite that post-publishing part of this architecture a few years ago to improve its efficiency and solve a lot of “lost post” bugs, but we didn’t change how “Add to queue” works.

However, the Queue 2.0 project available in Labs was an attempt to change the queue system to work as you expect—instead of starting at [beginning of day] and creating enough slots to fit [number of slots] every [number of hours], it tries to divide the calendar day into [number of slots] and fit the result back to the original algorithm’s mapping of the day. We never productionized this alternative approach, because it has a few bugs that some blogs hit in extreme cases, and we’ve never had time to fully fix them. It also can cause a bit of weirdness when time zones diverge, like with daylight savings time. Also, a lot of people prefer the default algorithm, and we haven’t thought of a nice way to transition everyone from one to the other. So for now, both options exist, and you can choose which algorithm for queue-slot-generating you want to use. We hope that makes sense! 

While complicated, it is a great example of a system built by engineers to make sense and be scalable and predictable. But sometimes these kinds of systems, while clever, aren’t very intuitive to understand without digging into how they work.

I wrote this article for my monthly Tolkien fandom studies column, Cultus Dispatches as part of the OTW's "ten things about fandom" challenge for International Fanworks Day. Normally, my Cultus column begins with a gnarly soup of data, and I often don't even know what (if anything!) will come out of analyzing it. This month, due to the relative lack of data, I thought I was giving myself an easy month of writing. I just needed to come up with ten things, right?? Ha! I think this might be the most challenging article I've written for this column to date.

Tolkien fanfic is older than Star Trek fanfic.

The first known Tolkien fanfic was an alternate-history Sauron redemption fic.

The first Tolkien fanfic archive was a slash archive.

Three out of four archives opened after the LotR films left theaters used the eFiction open-source script.

The first Angbang story was posted in 2002 (though it wasn't called Angbang yet).

What I find hilarious about Geordi is that he’s the most well adjusted member of the enterprise, if not starfleet.

Dude is disabled and takes pride in it, loving his enhancements, and doesn’t really overwork himself. He tries his best to keep a good work environment, yet doesn’t bend over backwards for perfection. He’s not that judgmental of others, and loves to explore anything— especially with other people— but rarely would bet his life on it.

Dude is literally just vibing, like his attitude is part of the reason he and data get along so well, but it’s mostly because he’s a giant nerd who loves larping and fun date ideas with someone who also loves to talk about engineering.

So, Peer Respites are a not-very-well-known alternative to psychiatric hospitalization. They are 100% voluntary and staffed by peers, AKA individuals with lived experience of mental illness/emotional distress/what-have-you. Generally, they are a homelike environment where you can come and go as you please, and there is lots of voluntary programming like groups, art, yoga, etc. You can bring your own food or cook meals together with staff and other residents. Stays are usually anywhere from five days to two weeks, depending on the respite house and also your own wants and needs. There are no restraints, strip searches, or seclusion.

They're also on the rise!! I know this because I've spent all day today compiling data on peer respites in the US so I could create this fun graph for ya'll.

In the past ten years, at least 38 new peer respites have opened in the US. The data for 2023 is incomplete, but at least one has already opened, and another is scheduled for a soft opening later this year.

Some things about the data:

I did not include peer respites which were permanently closed (2) or could not find an opening date for (1)

I used the National Empowerment Center's Directory of Peer Respites, along with some internet sleuthing to find a few more (and to find the opening dates for each one). Because of this, I may have missed a few.

There were a handful of peer respites for which I could not pin down a for-certain, exact date for. I did include these in the dataset as I was able to find rough estimates.

I have also not done a deep dive for all peer respites that were unsuccessful, which may skew the data a little bit.

I included Soteria Vermont as well, as it technically fits the definition despite being specifically for people with psychosis

If you would like to help get a peer respite off the ground, I would recommend donating to Peer Support Space Inc.'s Orlando FL Peer Respite. Their soft launch is November 2023, and they are scheduled to open to the public in January 2024. This is really important, because Florida's only peer respite has recently permanently closed.
