SUICIDE AWARENESS QUOTE 1 OF 3 Friday, September 23, 2022
"People pontificate, "Suicide is selfishness." Career churchmen like Pater go a step further and call in a cowardly assault on the living. Oafs argue this specious line for varying reason: to evade fingers of blame, to impress one's audience with one's mental fiber, to vent anger, or just because one lacks the necessary suffering to sympathize. Cowardice is nothing to do with it - suicide takes considerable courage. Japanese have the right idea. No, what's selfish is to demand another to endure an intolerable existence, just to spare families, friends, and enemies a bit of soul-searching." - David Mitchell, Cloud Atlas

and now we bring you to another episode of Crimes of Autistic on Main: this week, keaton tries to rectify their getting fired by SJW Soap R Us for having a flat affect, being refused accommodation, and having friends outside work. hashtag disability justice thoughts below
really frustrating thing to learn on my eeoc call yesterday is that, had my friend in management not hinted to my evil ex manager that "neurodiversity may be a factor" in the "behavioral issues" she was going to discipline me for BEFORE she talked to me, I might not have a case at all,* and even then I may not still bc stacey didn't explicitly say I'm autistic and for all that people may informally understand "neurodiversity" (esp in this context)** to be a nicer way of saying "mental disability", it's not synonymous under the law
* bc the argument apparently must be that she discriminated against me and denied me accommodation AFTER explicitly knowing I am autistic, not just that she was discriminating against me for the behavioral manifestation of said protected disability both before and after knowing that is the term for me
** roy from the eeoc is likely glad he no longer has to be the one to deal with me bc I kept going into too much detail really for the initial interview, but this is an argument I really do want to stress: that even if my medical diagnosis was not stated outright (by a third party who understandably respects my privacy), a generally understood synonymous term*** in the context of specifically the behavior in question (ie not just mentioned in another conversation abt idk how people get depressed or smth, but specifically as a factor in the behavior she took issue with)
*** another reason roy is glad to be rid of me: I kept asking if there was a list of federally protected mental disabilities that I could cross reference with those generally understood to be covered by "neurodiversity", to see what percentage overlaps. if I had any memory for names and numbers, I'm telling you, I'd be such a good lawyer

Cloud Atlas (2012)
Tumblr media
I'd much rather see an ambitious film than a safe one. If it doesn't all work, Cloud Atlas takes so many risks you have to admire it.
The film is divided into many storylines with key actors playing multiple roles. In one story, Tom Hanks might be a kind reporter, in another a sleazy, money-grubbing apothecary. Hugo Weaving plays a woman overseeing a nursing home and later, a demonic force in a post-apocalyptic future. Halle Berry is seen as a journalist in 1973, an Asian scientist, and an Indian party guest. Everyone plays different genders, ages, and ethnicities in a tale that explores how people’s actions in the past affect those of the future.
Directors Lana Wachowski, Tom Tykwer, and Lilly Wachowski have made a lot of bold moves with this picture. First, it follows dozens of characters and storylines that aren't connected in obvious ways. A book or movie mentioned in one story might be referenced as inspiration for the actions of another character. Blink and often, you’ll miss it. Next, the idea of reincarnation (a complex one) is made visual by having actors and actresses play multiple roles. Often it’s very convincing thanks to extensive makeup. You won't even realize this person played that certain background role until you read the end credits. There are also times when it isn’t quite seamless (It appears to be much easier to make a white person look like they’re from Seoul than a black woman appear white) but I applaud the effort. One of the best stories is set in a post-disaster, post-apocalyptic world. It's clear the language they speak evolved from English so you can catch bits and pieces of what they’re saying and get a sense of what’s going on, but there are no subtitles and no one "translates" for you.
Cloud Atlas is more than a technical curiosity or an experiment. It's a series of compelling stories. Each could’ve been its own movie. Put together like this, they make a symphony that's a joy to make sense of. This is a thinking person’s movie. The way these stories are connected is not obvious. The way they’ll conclude is not predictable and, in some cases do not end happily ever after. It’s long, but that running time allows you to immerse yourself in the story. By the time you get to the end, you’ve forgotten what was at the very beginning, making it feel like a circle of birth and rebirth that needs to be seen multiple times to be truly understood.
I can’t wait to see what filmmakers and storytellers Cloud Atlas will inspire in 15 or 20 years. Who will be inspired by the brave choices in Cloud Atlas, what ideas and techniques will they make their own? It’s a bit uneven. The tone between the retirement home story varies so much from the horrors of future Seoul that you'll suffer from whiplash. If you’re a fan of cinema or just want to see something different, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Even if it ultimately isn’t the type of film you fall in love with, you’ll hold Cloud Atlas close to your heart for the way it goes all-out. (Theatrical version on DVD, February 3, 2017)

Flying Nun Records 1993 calendar featuring the month of October as illustrated and designed by David Mitchell of The 3Ds, Goblin Mix, the Magick Heads, Plagal Grind, Chug and the Exploding Budgies.
Here’s an appropriately spooky (and actually kind of disturbing) October illustration from musician and artist David Mitchell. I listed most of his bands in the caption because a) relative to other bands in the Flying Nun stable, they are not well-known enough, and b) I love them all!

Day Two- Cloud Atlas, by David Mitchell
Six different stories that build on each other, stopping at their pinnacle, and starting the next story until they converge with the final story, then each story falling back in on the previous story. As hard as it is to explain, it's just as hard to read but once you figure out the skeleton on the story, it's one of the most beautiful novels I've ever read. Each story is written in the dialect of its time, the final story being set in a prehistoric future where a variant pidgen of English is spoken.
This story showed me what good writing and good planning could be, that sometimes knowing the skeleton of your story ahead of time could lead to something that means so much more than you could have anticipated. I still love writing, even though I don't do it nearly as much as I used to, and books like this are why I love doing it.

🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐(4/5) . Six lives, connected by an unseen thread, cross the world like clouds cross the sky. Each story interrupted by the following story halfway through, and returned to in reverse order like Russian dolls nested within one another. This book is one of my very favorites to read, so while I did enjoy listening to this production which used six different fantastic voice actors to tell the story, I give it four out of five stars and recommend reading the book itself-I think that medium lends itself to the epic pace of the story a little better. (On a somewhat related note, I wanted to give this audiobook a 0/5 star rating for using the artwork from the film, which somehow manages to take an all-star cast and a truly original story and turn it into one of the worst film adaptations I’ve ever seen.) . 🎧listened to in #audiobook format with the #Libby app🎧 . #DavidMitchell #sciencefiction #scifi #historicalfiction #fiction #reincarnation #music #mystery #philosophy #cloudatlas #bookstagram #booksireadin2019 #readinglist2019 #_bookshelf2019_ #bookrecommendation https://www.instagram.com/p/B2KTvIxJlQJ/?igshid=nwzl0k5bw8ww
