What's in a Nickname?
Request: from @doctorsteeb
Okay okay one more in case the last one was too specific—
Rossi!daughter coming home from college or from traveling abroad?
David Rossi x daughter!reader
Summary: A stop by your dad’s office leaves the BAU with a few questions… Some of them are more sentimental than others.
A/N: I couldn’t not write this after the idea popped into my head and this request gave me free reign to work with. If you didn’t look up what the nickname was for the reader in my other recent rossi!daughter fic you will know by the end. And yes, this nickname will absolutely stick for rossi!daughter reader from here on out unless I get a specific request not to include it because we all know if Rossi had a daughter this nickname would be canon.
CW: lots of italian... like I went a bit overboard on this one so here are translations: rompere le scatole = literal translation is “to break boxes” but it is slang for getting on someone’s nerves. Non avere peli sulla lingua = literal translation is “not to have hair on the tongue” which is slang for tell the truth. la goccia che ha fatto traboccare il vaso = literal translation for “drop that made the vase overflow” equating to the straw that broke the camel's back. Ti voglio bene = “I love you” used for family and close friends. Mio passerotta… you’ve gotta read until the end to find this one out for yourself.
---
“I never thought I would actually miss sitting in traffic,” you said, a smile on your face.
You were finally home after a semester abroad in Jamaica. Having always lived in a city, it was nice to be close to the ocean and wildlife and small towns, but after five months you were ready to return to the concrete jungle that was Washington, DC.
Your dad, on the other hand, was rather grumpy about the back up on the highway. “I’ll remind you of that next week when you say that the traffic is rompere le scatole.” He looked down at his watch and hesitated. “Do you mind if I-”
“Stop by the office?” You finished for him. You didn’t hate the idea of stopping by work with your dad, but you would have much rather gone home to eat a nice warm meal.
“If it’s not okay I understand,” he said. “Non avere peli sulla lingua.”
For a second, you thought about his words. “It’s fine,” you told him, then held out a singular finger. “But only if you make pasta tonight.” David Rossi might have been a master at hostage negotiation, but you were a master at dinner negotiation.
“Certo, mio passerotta,” he said as he turned onto the exit towards Quantico.
---
“Hey,” Derek walked into the bullpen, a cup of coffee in his hands even though it was nearly 5 PM. “Anyone know who is in Rossi’s office?”
“Rossi, I assume,” Emily said. She glanced up at the open office door where you were sitting. “Well that’s definitely not Rossi.”
“Maybe she’s a groupie?” JJ suggested.
“I don’t think a groupie would have made it past security,” said Reid without looking up from his book.
“BAU team,” Hotch walked into the bullpen with a file in hand, Rossi in tow, and Garcia trailing closely behind. “We have a case.”
The rest of the team headed to the conference room, but Rossi walked to his office to deliver the news to you that pasta might not be happening that night.
---
“You’re sure this is okay with you?” Your dad asked. “I don't want this to be la goccia che ha fatto traboccare il vaso-”
You cut him off with a wave of your hand. “I'm sure. Pasta can happen another night. Stopping a serial killer cannot.”
The team filed out of the conference room- the case was an emergency one, which meant the full briefing would be done on the jet, but they couldn’t help overhear the conversation you were having with your father.
“Ti voglio bene, papa.” You wrapped him in a hug.
He returned it, holding you tight. “Ti voglio bene, mio passerotta.”
You had to pry yourself out of your father’s arms to get him to let go. With a kiss on the forehead and a reminder not to drink his expensive wine, he sent you on your way home and went into his office to pack up his briefcase.
“Rossi has a daughter?” Emily smiled a bit and looked around at Morgan, Reid, JJ, and Garcia in confusion. “Did any of you know?”
“I had no idea,” JJ said as she and the rest of the team watched you leave.
“What’s everyone looking at?” Hotch said from behind them as he exited his office. They all startled at their boss’s sudden appearance.
“Rossi’s daughter that none of us knew existed,” Garcia admitted, still surprised.
“Oh yes, that’s (Y/N),” Hotch said. “She’s been studying abroad but decided to spend this summer with Dave instead of her mother.”
“Which wife?” Morgan joked.
“Actually, her mother is a close friend from college.” Rossi said. Once again, the team jumped in surprise. “We both wanted a kid, but she didn’t want to deal with too many lawyers and I didn’t want to deal with someone not understanding that I have an inflexible job. It worked out for both of us. Now if we’re done talking about my personal life, I think we have a murderer to catch.”
Rossi and Hotch walked out of the bullpen, leaving the team to stand around awkwardly for just a moment before remembering they had a flight to catch.
---
The case was fast and successful, but after being awake for nearly 24 hours straight most of the team was asleep- all except for Reid and Prentiss who were playing chess in the most quiet corner of the jet.
“How’d you know she was his daughter?” Reid asked as he moved his queen.
“It was a pretty easy inference,” said Emily as she calculated her next move, carefully watching how Reid had strategically placed his knights. She captured one. “She called him papa. I figured she had to be his daughter.”
“What does it mean?” Reid moved a bishop forward.
“What does what mean?” Emily moved one of her pieces without thinking.
Reid captured a pawn in her confusion. “He called her mio passerotta. You smiled when he said her nickname. What does it mean?”
Emily’s mouth twitched slightly up at one corner and moved a rook before leaning back in her seat. “My sparrow,” she said, a melancholy tone to her voice. “Mio passerotta means ‘my sparrow.’”
Reid looked down, a small smile gracing his face before going back to the board and putting Emily’s king in check with a move his mentor had used against him many years before.

Love language- Criminal Minds.
Summary: After a rough week, the family comes over for dinner.
Warnings: Mentions of a bad case, little angsty.
Pairing: David Rossi x fem!reader.
Word count: 1,099.
Translation: Ciao bella- Hi beautiful. Amore mio- My love. Mia famiglia- My family. Bella- Beautiful. Amore- Love.
Tumblr media
"Ciao Bella," My head shot up to meet my husband's eyes as he all but crawled into our home. "How was your day?" The small talk didn't fool me, I knew it had been a rough week from the messages he has sent me.
"Better than yours I imagine, Amore Mio." I teased, taking his jacket from his hand and throwing it onto the sofa. "How did the case go?"
"Hmm, we managed to get him but not before he killed two more people." That explained why he seemed so defeated.
"Oh Dave," I pulled him closer to me. "You couldn't have stopped it from happening. You all did your best."
"I know, I know." He sighed heavily, holding me to his chest as he pressed a kiss to my head. "I invited the team over for dinner, figured they needed a pick me up after this week.
"That's sweet of you," I was more than happy to have his team over, they were family after all. "What do we need to get ready then?" I indulged in his plan. His love language was cooking for people. A good meal after a gruelling case was his remedy for everything and if he could help his team feel better by feeding them then he would happily do it.
I watched as he fixed up all his ingredients, a glass of scotch on the worktop for a relaxant whilst he waited for the team to arrive. We always loved having them around, the team were David's family and thus my family too, I loved them all just like he did.
Everyone began to arrive at around half past 6 once they had been home and cleaned up, leaving the kids with sitters for one more evening. Spencer arrived first, a tired smile on his face as I opened the door, pulling him into a hug without hesitation. For someone who didn't do physical contact, I couldn't help but feel overjoyed when he melted into my arms a little.
JJ and Emily turned up together, smiles entirely contradicting the dark circles under their eyes as they engaged in a general conversation and said hello to the others. Aaron had his usual stern, tired face on but smiled slightly when I let him in, taking his coat and hugging him.
"Just Derek and Penelope to arrive," Aaron handed me a glass of wine as we all sat in the living room. "How has Dave been since he got back?" His voice lowered as my eyes flickered to my husband.
"He's been okay, exhausted like the rest of you but," I paused, sighing a little. "I think it just gets to him when he feels like he hasn't done enough to save someone. I try to explain that you all do your best but some things just happen that we can't help, unfortunately." I bit my cheek as I placed my hand on his shoulder gently. "You all do an amazing but formidable job, I think sometimes you just struggle to see the good outweighs the bad." There was no denying my love language was physical touch, a good hug could fix a world of problems in my opinion.
"I think we do,' He muttered, face changing to a slight smile as he looked down at me. "You always know what to say Y/N." I chuckled and nodded seriously, it was my job to do what I could to help. Even if it was just words to some.
A knock on the door dragged us out of our thoughts and I pulled myself out o my seat. A very smiley Penelope bounced on the balls of her feet as the door swung open and I managed to squeeze out a hello before she practically threw her arms around me.
"Ohh it's been too long, you look amazing Y/N!" I laughed at her energy, as infectious as always.
"Thank you, Penelope, you look beautiful, new dress?" Her eyes sparkled behind her glasses as she twirled a little for me. "Hello Derek, you scrub up well." I motioned to the shirt he was wearing as he kissed my cheek.
"You know I have to keep the ladies entranced somehow." I rolled my eyes at him playfully and closed the door behind the pair before grabbing them their own drink. Conversation flowed easily in the living room as I popped in and out with David, getting lost in jokes and normal life, watching the tension ease from each person as they felt comfortable and relaxed.
"Come on Mia Famiglia, time to eat." David clapped his hands together, calling them for dinner as I finished setting the dining table. A sea of smiling faces walked through and took a seat and as we all settled down I couldn't help the full, joyful feeling in my chest.
The meal was spent laughing and joking with each other. A conversation about their work never came up, they needed a break from it, to say the least, but we filled the time with memories and general topics like the children and how I may or may not have gone on a shopping spree for Henry and Jack (again).
By the end of the night, the team were much more relaxed, a few were even slightly tipsy but overall much better than when they arrived.
As designated drivers, and parents, Aaron and JJ agreed to make sure everyone got home in one piece so we wrapped up the night with more hugs and warm goodbyes.
"Bella," David smiled at me through my dressing table mirror as I removed my jewellery. "Thank you so much for tonight." His hand wrapped over my shoulders as he kissed my head.
"Amore, you invited them, that was all you."
"But you make them comfortable and happy, they relax around you because they love you. It's not easy to get a room of FBI agents to stop being on edge all the time but you manage it so easily. Even Reid comes to you for a hug now, that's a huge achievement you know."
"They're my family too," I turned to face him, "I know it gets too much for all of you and I just want to make sure you can all let go every once in a while." I cupped his cheek as I stood up, "Even you have to relax David, don't hold a grudge against yourself." I cradled his head as our foreheads rested against each other.
"Thank you Y/N," he whispered, eyes closed as he relaxed into the moment.
"Anytime Amore, Anytime."

Storia Di Musica #319 - Black Country Communion, Black Country Communion, 2010
Decisamente rock.

Finally finished WWDITS lmao. Speaking as a lesbian, Harvey Guillen has a super cute face and an ass that won’t quit and he can Get It.
ID in alt and under cut bc too damn much
1a. Shoulders up of human neighbor Sean in a disheveled tux from the casino episode, holding a glass of beer and squinting drunkenly past the viewer. He says, "Ey, where's the little guy, y'know, Nandor's boyfriend?" 1b. Reverse shot of Laszlo and Nadja slumped exhaustedly over the bar, barely comprehending the conversation. Nadja looks all but comatose and Laszlo blearily replies, "who?" Looking behind them, an exhausted Nandor has a brief moment of lucidity and snaps his eyes open. "My WHAT?"
2a. Guillermo drinks stoically from a coffee mug while talking to Derek the vampire. Derek, wearing a magicians cloak and tophat, remarks, "Oh, did your master get you that mug?" Guillermo grunts in response and Derek notes "how nice." 2b. Close up on a mildly irritated Guillermo doing a talking head, holding the mug which we can now see says "world's best familiar." He says "I got this for myself as a 5th anniversary present. Nandor got me a vacuum." 2c. Small flashback of 2012 showing a younger Guillermo with longer hair desperately scrubbing a bloody floor with a shitty push broom that is missing half it's bristles. Offscreen, present day Guillermo continues, "Admittedly, it's a lot better than the broom they had before."
3a. Full body of Laszlo and Nandor from the end of the witch semen episode, standing facing each other in front of a door. Stone-faced, Nandor offers, "want to jerk each other off and never talk about it?" Laszlo, equally unemotional, replies "absolutely." 3b. Later, a talking head of Laszlo and Nadja on a couch. With a satisfied smile, fingers laced in front of him, Laszlo announces to the camera "Nandor and I jerked each other off." Nadja, one arm around the back of the couch behind her husband, smirks with pride.

Nadja, one arm around the back of the couch behind her husband, smirks with pride.
4. Full body of Guillermo leaning sassily against a wall, one hip cocked, eyebrows raised with a pout. He is wearing sparkly high top sneakers, white knee socks with a red stripe, red booty shorts, and a white tee shirt with three checked boxes reading 'petty' 'jealous' and 'bitch'. Text above him reads 'tfw your master's ex is in town.'
5. Bust of Guillermo in a waistcoat and collared shirt, smiling adorably as he is wont to do with yellow stars floating around his head.
6a. Doodle of Guillermo in exaggerated shortness holding hands with Nandor, who is in exaggerated tallness and wearing a full length dracula cape with a furry collar. Guillermo, smiling, gestures to Nandor with a heart floating by his face and says "Mami, este es mi novio, Nandor." (In English: momma, this is my boyfriend Nandor.) Nandor, waving with his free hand, grins and says "Helloooo, Mrs. Greenber-" Guillermo corrects him "de la Cruz." Nandor continues awkwardly "Deeh la Crooz."
6b. Talking head with Guillermo's mom, looking exasperated. She says, "es el primer tiempo mi Memo trae a su novio en casa...y creo que él es un vampiro. Dios mio, mijo." (In English: it's the first time my Memo has brought his boyfriend home...and I think he's a vampire. Dear God, son.)
7. Close up of Guillermo in a waistcoat and shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He is spattered liberally with blood and is brandishing a well-used stake with one gloved hand. Nadja stands behind him with a manic grin, both hands planted on his shoulders as if pushing him forward. She says, "Gizmo, you are so sexy right now! Kill them!" Guillermo, trying to stay focused in slayer mode, glances back at her with some confusion, squeaking out an "um?"
8. Full body of Laszlo dramatically dipping Nadja, both arms around her waist, while salaciously baring his fangs with a grin. Nadja is smiling widely in delight, baring her fangs back at him with one hand gripping his shoulder and the other thrown over his back. She has one leg extended to the ground and the other hiked up around Laszlo's waist. Hearts float around their heads. In the background, there is a tiny doodle of Colin Robinson coming into the room holding a steaming mug that says "island time" with a palm tree. He smiles at the couple in his usual casual, ill-timed way and says "hey guys, what's up?"

Anomalocaris
(temporal range: 540-499 mio. years ago)
[text from the Wikipedia article, see also link above]
Anomalocaris ("unlike other shrimp", or "abnormal shrimp") is an extinct genus of radiodont, an order of early-diverging stem-group arthropods.
It is best known from the type species A. canadensis, found in the Stephen Formation (particularly the Burgess Shale) of British Columbia, Canada. Other closely related fossils have been found in the older Emu Bay Shale of Australia, as well as possibly elsewhere. Originally, several fossilized parts discovered separately (the mouth, frontal appendages and trunk) were thought to be three separate creatures, a misapprehension corrected by Harry B. Whittington and Derek Briggs in a 1985 journal article.
Like other radiodonts, Anomalocaris had swimming flaps running along its body, large compound eyes, and a single pair of segmented, "frontal appendages", which in Anomalocaris were used to grasp prey. Measuring up to 56 cm (1.84 ft) long, A. canadensis is one of the largest animals of the Cambrian, and thought to be one of the earliest examples of an apex predator, though others have been found in older Cambrian lagerstätten deposits.

Hi, I’m such a fan of your work. they way you write, the storytelling is absolutely amazing! I feel so refreshed every time I read your work fr
Any advice or if you have recs on books to read? I’m a writer too and I wanna expose myself to more writings so I can improve 😞
thank you so much😭🫶 this made my dayyyy
i think that you should read whatever you want to be honest, i don't know if you'll like what i read. BUT i'll give you a list of my favorite books :))
nerd talk under the cut
Fresh Water for Flowers - Valérie Perrin
Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen
Mio, My Son - Astrid Lindgren
Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
The Remains of the Day - Kazuo Ishiguro
Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov (please read this as the main character being the villain and nothing else or i will hunt you down- i hate pop culture's take on this book)
if you are made uncomfortable by a book topic, not in a triggering way of course but if you feel like it might change your perspective on things, then you should read it!
i read a lot of philosophy books/articles too since that's what i study! i think that reading philosophy gives you a great challenge and it'll change the way you think!! my favorite philosophers (at the moment!!!!) are Derek Parfit, Simone de Beauvoir, Albert Camus, Ludwig Wittgenstein, G.W.F. Hegel, and there are probably more... my area of study is western philosophy so i don't know a lot about eastern philosophers (but i hope that'll change).
and since i wouldn't say that i've read all that much, so i'm going to recommend some books that i WANT to/going to read as well:
Monstrilio - Gerardo Sámano Córdova
The Goldfinch - Donna Tartt
Trust - Hernan Diaz
Almond - Sohn Won-Pyung
The Vegetarian - Han kang
Our Wives Under the Sea - Julia Armfield
there's a lot more but then i'd end up sitting here writing forever.
if you want to improve you should write as much as you can though! i've been writing since i could remember, and it wasn't exactly any good at all until a few years ago. i wouldn't call myself a fantastic writer, but i'm trying !! the best thing that i've done to improve is to keep writing. writing is hard, you have to consider a lot of things while writing, but i think that the brain workout you get from doing it is worth it!!

Oh Baby, Oh Baby - chapter 5: What Makes a Family
Chapter summary: Luke and Penelope make the trip down to New York to visit his family. Things do not go as expected.
Content warning: Luke's parents are kind of assholes in this chapter. There are discussions of homophobia, as well as parents just generally not accepting their children.

Thanks to help from Derek and Savannah, as well as the rest of the team, Luke and Penelope were able to get moved into their new house by the end of Penelope's first trimester. Everything was progressing as it was supposed to, so the pair decided it was as good a time as any to go down to New York to visit Luke's family. They knew Penelope and Luke were expecting a baby, they were the first to be told after the team, but since this situation had been… quick and unexpected, they hadn't actually met Penelope yet. So as not to overwhelm the expectant mother on her first visit, it would only be Luke's parents, his sister, her wife, and their daughter.
A tall woman with pale skin and chin-length brown hair–Luke's sister-in-law–was the one to open the door when they arrived. She stared at Penelope for a moment before blurting out, "You're white!" And then, quickly, "Oh my god! I'm so sorry! I didn't mean to say that! It's just that when he said your name was Penelope Garcia, this was not what I expected!"
Penelope laughed it off. "Don't worry, he made a similar comment when we met."
She laughed and then turned to Luke. "Are white girls the Alvez kid type?"
Luke rolled his eyes, but laughed anyway. "Oh my god, Melanie, shut up."
The two looked at each other for a moment, each with a slight smirk, before wrapping each other in a hug. "It's good to see you again, Luke," she told him, genuine emotion evident in her voice.
"You too, Mel."
Melanie turned to Penelope and hugged her as well. "And you! It's so nice to finally meet you! Luke's been telling us about you for years!"
Penelope cast a look at her boyfriend. "Years?"
Luke felt his cheeks warm. "Can we continue this conversation inside?"
"Yes, yes, of course, come on in," Melanie said, waving them in. “Elanor, Antonio, Liliana, Isabela, they’re here!”
The first set of footsteps they heard was the pitter-patter of a child running down the stairs. Isabela, Luke’s niece, came into view and catapulted herself into her uncle’s arms. “Tio Luke! You’re here!”
Luke wrapped his arms tight around the little girl, swinging her around. “Hey, Isabela!” Luke exclaimed, peppering kisses all over her hair. “Dios mio, I’ve missed you, you’ve gotten so big!”
“Of course I did, I’m nine now! I’m a big girl!”
Luke pretended he didn’t know that fact. “Nine? You are a big girl!” He put her down then, and put his arm around Penelope. “Isabela, this is your Tia Penelope. We’re going to have a baby, and they’re going to be your cousin. Your Primo or Prima.”
“I know! Mami and Mama told me!” She looked up at Penelope and waved. “Hello!”
Penelope waved back. “Hello! Can I give you a hug?”
The little girl didn’t even bother responding, she just wrapped her arms around Penelope’s waist.
The rest of the adults joined them then, Luke's parents Elanor and Antonio, and his sister Liliana.
Hugs and introductions were given all around, Luke and Penelope settled their things in the guest bedroom they’d be staying in for the course of their visit, and they sat down for dinner. Not long after dinner was done, Isabela had to go to bed, so she gave her goodnight hugs and was on her way. Once she was asleep, the adults congregated in the living room and Elanor made tea for those who wanted it.
“So, Luke, Penelope,” she said as she sat down with her own cup. “You never told us; when’s the wedding?”
Penelope looked at Luke, confused, shocked, and maybe a little angry depending on what his answer to her question would be. "Did you say we're getting married?"
Luke looked equally as confused as Penelope. "Um, no, I didn't." He turned to his mother then. "Mamà, Penelope and I aren't getting married, at least not any time soon."
Elanor's eyes went wide. "You're not?"
Penelope shook her head. "No, we decided it's not what we want right now. Maybe a few years down the line we'll change our minds, but not now. We don't want to get married to fit societal expectations just because I'm pregnant. That's not healthy."
"You have to get married," Elanor exclaimed, sounding a little angry. "This is not how things are done!"
"She's right," Antonio agreed. "If you don't, your child would be illegitimate. Penelope, you'd hardly be a part of the family."
"I understand where they're coming from," Melanie interjected, trying to diffuse the situation. She could see the pain on Penelope's face and the fury on Luke's, and she didn't want things to end in a shouting match like they had in the past when his parents made comments like this. "It's up to the couple to decide whether or not to get married, and if they've decided that they don't want to get married, that's probably the best decision for them to make."
Liliana turned to her. "Are you serious?"
Melanie looked stunned and stared back at her wife. "Are you?"
"We fought for years for people to be able to get married, for us to be able to get married, and now they're throwing away something that's always been available for them because they 'don't feel like it?'"
"You're right, we fought for our right to get married because it's what we wanted. We fought for people like us to be able to get married if they wanted. You and I of all people should understand that no one should have their marital status dictated by others or societal norms."
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to start a fight," Penelope said, standing. "And actually I'm feeling pretty tired right now, so I think I'll turn in. Goodnight."
Luke got up to follow her. "Penelope–"
"No, Luke, please, stay and catch up with your family, I'm just going to bed."
To his credit, he listened.
Penelope went upstairs, and the remaining adults stayed silent, no one knowing what to say. After a few minutes, Luke worked his jaw and stood up, clearly intending on following Penelope up to their room and going to bed as well.
"Luke, no," Melanie said.
He looked at her, clearly feeling torn, and the pain was obvious in his voice. "What do you mean, 'no?'"
"I mean you stay here, sort this out." She pointed at Liliana, Elanor, and Antonio. "I'll go talk to her."
"But–"
"Luke," Melanie implored. "I've been where she is. Please. Let me talk to her."
Luke worked his jaw again, but nodded. "Okay."
Melanie made her way upstairs to the room Penelope and Luke were sharing and knocked on the door.
"Luke, I'm fine," came Penelope's voice through the door. "Go talk to your family, really."
"Oh, he is," Melanie replied. "And that is not a conversation I want to be around for. Actually, it kind of is, it'd be fun to see him rip into them for treating you this way, but that's not the point. The point is: I'm not Luke, I'm Melanie, so can I come in?"
The surprise was evident in Penelope's voice. "Oh! Um, sure, yeah."
Melanie opened the door gently and flashed the other woman a tight-lipped grin. "Hey. I am so sorry for everything that went on down there, especially Liliana, I am stunned she reacted the way she did, and I am not here to try to excuse anyone. Luke wanted to follow you up here, but I told him to stay and deal with his family. I've been where you are right now, so I wanted to talk to you. Can I sit?"
Penelope scooted over on the bed to make room for Melanie. "Yeah, sure."
Melaine sat beside Penelope and took a deep breath before beginning. Even years later, this story was still hard for her to tell. “The first time Liliana ever brought me home, Elanor and Antonio were not the most accepting of the fact that their daughter was with another girl. Not that we weren’t exactly expecting that, I mean old catholic people are going to old catholic people, right?”
Penelope let out a tear-laced laugh. “You got that right.”
“Liliana and I got to a point in our relationship where we would have gotten married if we were allowed, we knew we were it for each other, we lived together, I mean we were even wearing rings. We were each other’s family. My parents had accepted her as part of ours, but I did not receive the same treatment from Elanor and Antonio because we weren’t married. When Liliana and I decided to have Isabela, we used IVF. I think it’s obvious whose egg we used and who carried her.”
Penelope nodded. Isabela looked just like Liliana, and therefore just like Luke, but much younger and female.
“We were hoping that would change their minds, especially since I was the one carrying the baby, but they still wouldn’t. They said that since I wasn’t biologically or legally related to anyone in the family, I wasn’t family.”
“That’s really awful, I’m so sorry,” Penelope told her.
“It was awful. Thank you. Liliana and I were at a complete loss, we had no idea what to do, and that’s when Luke stepped up. He absolutely tore into his parents, telling them to get off their homophobic high horse, that Liliana chose me and that should be good enough for them, and to accept that I was permanently a part of their lives and family because if they didn’t accept that then Liliana would probably cut contact with them—which he said she was well within her right to do considering the way they had been treating me—and if that happened then they would lose him too because there was no way he’d stand behind parents who treated his sister and her family so horribly. That was the wake-up call Elanor and Antonio needed, because they ended up apologizing to me and Liliana not long after.”
Penelope’s eyes widened. “He said that?”
Melanie nodded. “He did. I was absolutely astounded, and then he came up to me privately later. He said he said he would always stand beside us because he loves his sister, and she loves me so he loves me too, that no matter that we weren’t legally related, I was his sister too, and I mean you’ve seen him with Isabela. He adores her. Has since the day she was born. He’s the best uncle ever, and I know he’s going to be an amazing dad, Penelope.”
Penelope was on the verge of tears. “I know so too. I’ve seen him with our friends’ kids. His godkids and mine. He’s amazing.”
“He really is. Did he ever tell you he was Liliana’s best man at our wedding?”
“No, he didn’t.”
“Oh, well he was. There was not a dry eye in the audience as he gave his speech. You’ve got a really great guy on your hands, Penelope.”
“I know I do.”
Melanie wrapped her arms around Penelope’s shoulders. “Luke always stood up for me and my family, so I’ll always stand up for you and yours. You’re his family, and he’s mine, so you’re mine too.”
Penelope leaned into the hug and wrapped her arms around Melanie’s waist. “Thank you.”

Meanwhile, downstairs, Luke was livid. “I can’t believe you guys would say those kinds of things. I mean I thought we got over this ten years ago. And you said them to her face?”
“I’m sorry, Luke,” Elanor said. “But one grandchild out of wedlock was bad enough—”
“Mamà!” Liliana reprimanded. “Are you not over this?”
Elanor turned to her daughter. “I’m sorry, I know it wasn’t your fault, I know you would have gotten married if you were able.” She turned back to Luke. “But you two have the option readily available, I can’t see why you wouldn’t take it?”
“Because we don’t want it right now!”
“You are raising a family with this girl, yes?”
“First of all, she is not ‘this girl,’ she has a name, and it’s Penelope. Use it. And yes, I am raising a family with her. Because I love her and I want to be with her.”
“And you don’t intend on ever separating from her?”
“No, I don’t.”
“Then why wouldn’t you two get married?”
“Because having children is expensive enough, you should know, you’ve had two. Why would we spend so much on something unnecessary, especially when it’s—and I cannot stress this enough—we do not want right now? Right now. We haven’t said we’ll never get married.”
His parents’ eyes lit up. “So you might end up married after all?”
“Maybe, but definitely not before the baby comes. If it happens, it won’t be for years yet, and it may never even happen. And if it doesn’t, that’s fine, because it is up to us and none of your business.”
“How are we supposed to show our faces in our church if they found out our son and his girlfriend chose to have a child out of wedlock?” Elanor demanded.
“That doesn’t matter!” Luke exploded. “Because it’s none of their business either! And if you decide that you’re ashamed of your son’s family, of your grandchild, then that is on you. I love Penelope, and the way you treated her and spoke to her was awful and I will not stand for it. If you keep it up I will be cutting off contact. No one treats my family that way.”
“We are your family, Luke,” Antonio said.
“So are they! Penelope and our baby, they are my family too. I chose them, and I will continue to choose them. That is that.”
Melanie poked her head down the stairs at that moment. “Hey, we’re all good up here, I’m going to bed now. Night, all.”
“Goodnight, Melanie,” Luke called back up. “Thank you.” He turned back to face his family. “I’m going to bed too. Goodnight.” He stood up, but before he left, he said one final thing to his sister. “I have never done anything but stand up for you and your family, would it kill you to do the same for me?”
He went upstairs and got ready for bed, then cuddled in beside Penelope. Instead of her spooning into him like he was used to, she flipped over and kissed him.
“You’re an angel, did you know that?”
“What do you mean?”
“Melanie told me about everything that you did for her, how you stood up for her. You’re amazing.”
“I love my parents, don’t get me wrong, but I was not going to stand for them treating Liliana and Mel that way. And I didn’t stand for them treating you like that either. I told them the same thing. I will cut off contact with them if they continue to say those kinds of things.”
“Luke I’d never want you to have to choose between me and your family.”
He silenced her worries with a kiss. “You are my family, Penelope.” He placed his left hand on her stomach. “Both of you are. There’s no choice here. So don’t even worry about it, okay?” He kissed her once more on the mouth and then once on the forehead. “I love you. Let’s get some sleep, okay?”
Penelope nodded. “I love you too.” She cuddled into his chest, and they were both asleep within minutes.

Breakfast the next morning would have been incredibly tense had it not been for Isabela and her youthful naivete and joy that kept them all laughing. No one had forgotten the fight from the evening before, but no one was talking about it yet either. Elanor offered to make some baby blankets, which Luke and Penelope graciously accepted, but that was it.
After breakfast, however, Liliana came up to the pair of them privately. “I cannot apologize enough for the way I behaved last night. Luke, what you said really struck a chord with me. You’re right, all you have ever done is stand up for me, and I should have done the same for you. Mel and I had a really good talk about it last night, too. I am really sorry. I will do better. I am so happy and excited for you guys. And welcome to the family, Penelope.”
Penelope smiled and hugged her. “Thank you.”
Liliana hugged her back, then hugged Luke. “I will talk to Mamà and Papì. I promise. We’ll get them on our side soon enough.”
The three adults laughed. Things weren’t perfect, but there was time.
