BACKGROUND

Daughter of David Sarif and Violette Delacourt, she was conceived as a failed attempt on Violette's part to get David to play ball with the Illuminati. When that didn't pan out, Violette tried to raise Sloane as her heir apparent. Instead, Sloane did the thing she knew would piss off her mother the most: she enlisted in the Army. Her test scores were high enough that she was shunted right into the Special Forces pipeline (which had just opened up to women). After training as a Special Forces medic, she was assigned to ODA-113, who became known over the next decade for their expertise in shutting down rogue biowarfare labs.

They were so good at their job, in fact, that the Illuminati used one of their "private contractor" contacts to crash their plane on an op a month before the events of Human Revolution, leaving her critically injured.

At the time of the opening of Odysseus Gambit, Sloane has been augmented with a special set of augs (built and secretly provided by her father) and is absolutely chewing the walls in her enforced retirement…

COMBAT & SKILLS

About the chapter 37...

At the moment, I am unable to read the new comments I received, first from Siobhan68, when the story had not been updated for practically a year, and later from Cyberwolf0_replicant on chapter 36.

This is not because of some technical issue, but because I struggle to get back to interacting with readers.

But the approaching date of March 9, Adam's birthday, always makes me think of this story, which I started writing after years and years of not writing. After the death of several relatives from 2010 onward, especially my mother's death from cancer in 2014. Also, on July 14, 2023, my dog Febo passed away, because he was old and because he had cancer as well. He was the dog that my mother had wanted shortly after finding out about her lung cancer (and after the death in 2010 of my mother's sister, that is, my aunt.)

The absurd and embarrassing thing is that I started suffering from panic attacks not after all these griefs, but after realizing that despite the effort put into the creation of Deus Ex War Paint, my fanfiction is enjoyed by very few readers, practically counted on the fingers of one hand.

This is nobody's fault, neither mine nor those who rightly have their own preferences. I just feel sorry for the few readers who are waiting for this fanfiction updates.

I will continue to update the story at least until the chapter completed so far, chapter 44, but after that, I don't know how it will go.

Adam and Selene's story extends to the earthquake that will occur in the saga timeline in 2030.

Selene will make the acquaintance of Megan Reed, Adam's parents and Alex Vega, but also of Bob Page, Gunther Hermann, Madame Photographe, Janus and many other characters such as Dr. Tiffany Kavanagh and Dr. Gary Savage.

Deus Ex War Paint is, to be fair, divided into acts. The first act begins with the first chapter and ends with Adam's mission with TF29 in chapter 16. The second act picks up from chapter 17 until chapter 34, the first kiss between Adam and Selene. The third act continues with chapter 35, Damian's death, and will definitely lead to what I have in mind for the 2030 earthquake. And it will probably all end in the fourth act, which may be the shortest, although broadly speaking I have assumed that Deus Ex War Paint will have approximately 65 chapters.

Maybe part of me is hoping that this post will inspire other readers to start the story or pick up where they left off. Or it is simply a long stream of consciousness in which I in turn make my own mind up about the future events of Deus Ex War Paint.

In any case, my final point in this regard is that I must have underestimated the weight Damian's death had on me, and dealing with Selene's death of a loved one is probably something I was not really prepared for.

Because the path to which Selene has just entered is far from idyllic.

I know this. I speak from personal experience.

Just what is up with the "Sky Attribute"?

To be specific – why does it feel "holy"?

Some of you might have forgotten, but when the White Star first showed up in the story (during the battle against the Lich in the Empire) several characters, even Saint Jack, stated that he seemed "holy". Despite him being cursed by the God of Death, evil, crazy – not to mention absorbing dead mana regularly! How is that possible?!

Shortly after we are given another detail: that it's the Sky Attribute specifically that feels "pure" and "holy" and "like nature itself". Later, we're told that the Sky Attribute is able to control the sky and clouds to create anything from perfect weather conditions to a cataclysm. But we also find out that this power originated from the Demon World – there is nothing natural about it! So, what is up with this?

Then I realized – what is "holiness", exactly? According to the dictionary, the definition of "holy" is "dedicated or consecrated to God or a religious purpose". Basically meaning holy = godly. Which god could be possibly responsible for such an evil power?

Why, none other than the god that the Demonic Race worships of course: the God of Despair, aka. the Sealed God!

Think about it, it makes perfect sense! If the Sealed God was the one who originally created the Sky Attribute, it would explain everything about it. Why on the surface it seems "pure" and "holy" while requiring a dastardly amount of dead mana to keep it going (whether it's as an inhibitor or fuel is unclear). Why it was given to the Ancient White Star (because there's no way that guy created it on his own) – he probably made a contract of some sort with the God of Despair. Perhaps he promised to summon the Temple in similar fashion that the White Star did? We do know both White Stars wore the same white mask, after all. There is something iffy as hell about it; that mask can regenerate and must be worn almost at all times by the person possessing the Sky Attribute. I doubt that's a coincidence.

It would also explain why no one else got their hands on the Sky Attribute before the second White Star. Think about it – the ancient powers randomly got scattered, what are the chances that in 9,000 years NO ONE ever found it?? (I mean Cale's ancient powers also waited a long time, but they at least had weirdly specific trials with obscure conditions to justify it...) Isn't that weird? It was such a fearsome power after all, SOMEONE should have been interested in finding it before that! My guess is that the Hunters probably tracked it down first and had it stored somewhere. When the second White Start showed up, he made a deal with the Sealed God of some sort, but we don't know what it was, exactly. Perhaps to be given the Sky Attribute and the white mask...?

Either way, that's my theory about it. The Sky Attribute was literally a God-Given Power, that's why it felt holy – but it came from an evil god, which was why it had such evil requirements to control it.
