RELATIONSHIP: Dinah Sr and Dinah Jr have a difficult relationship. Though she idolized her mother, she also resented her absence due to being a vigilante. It wasn't until her metagene activated when she was a teenager she thought she could be a vigilante herself but her mother was set against it, especially after her father passed away. The two would often bicker about it, with Dinah wanting to show she could do this while Dinah Sr believed that the world of crime fighting had gotten considerably darker. After her mother was injured and died on the job, Dinah decided to take on the mantle of the Black Canary to honor her mother at 18 years old.

RELATIONSHIP: Dinah and her father was close though, much like her father, as she grew up, she began to resent the time away from home. It seemed her parents were often more interested in the streets of Gotham than her. However, it wasn't until he was murdered in a shoot-out when she was 13 that she truly regretted her feelings of anger toward him. Before his murder, Dinah did want to be a cop like her father until her metagene activated.

RELATIONSHIP: Ted Grant adopted Dinah after the passing of her parents. He was the one who guided Dinah when her metagene activated and after she declared her wanting to take on the mantle of the Black Canary, Ted was the one who taught her how to fight. How to operate on the streets and to be effective as well as getting up after she took a blow. Dinah holds a great amount of respect for him.

SHORT BIO

Dinah Lance was born with justice running through her veins. Her father was Gotham Detective, Larry Lance and her mother were Dinah Drake Lance, who was turned down by the GCPD and instead took her training to the streets as a vigilante in Gotham. Her mother also ran a florist. She was also raised around her mother’s friend and sometimes partner Ted Grant built a special bond with him after her father passed away from cancer. Despite her fascination with heroics, she began to resent her mother more due to her missing out on things in her life due to her commitment to crime-fighting. The fact her mother didn’t want Dinah going out there and into the same business only spurred her on more.

She took things into her own hands, taking a strong interest in athletics and signing up for Judo lessons which her mother promptly stopped when she found out despite Ted insisting that Dinah was a natural. Dinah eventually convinced Ted to train who taught her self-defense techniques before she convinced him to up the training to more extreme measures to get her fighting ready. As a teenager, her metagene activated and with no control, Dinah heavily damaged the school she was attending in Gotham. Her mother agreed to let Ted help train her scream if it meant Dinah could live a normal life. Dinah shared a touching moment with her mother who agreed to hang up her costume and retire from the crime-fighting business. However, she was killed on her last job which devastated Dinah.

Adopted by Ted Grant, Dinah continued training with him and by the age of 18, she went out on the streets of Gotham as a vigilante. Wearing a costume inspired by her mother, she ran out there in heels, fishnets, a black bodice, jacket, and mask. Ted insisted that she was not ready but came back, bruised and hurt, but with the crooks in way worse shape behind her. However, Dinah was struggling to make a name for herself in Gotham and she had too many close calls with deadly situations. Her mother was right in that the crime in Gotham truly had changed.

Selling the family florist business that truly was on its last leg, Dinah bid farewell to Gotham and decided that she would take a gap year traveling East Asia before returning to simply live a normal life. It was in Japan she met Richard Dragon who gave her brutal tutelage on how to fight, almost killing her several times. It was here Dinah really upped the ante of her fighting skills and she also met someone who would become her rival, Lady Shiva. Learning from both of them as well as holding onto Ted’s teachings, Dinah felt like she now truly had the skill to make a difference.

When moving back, Dinah decided to not settle for Gotham City. She had heard the news of a vigilante running around there and how crazy things had gotten. That and Gotham had taken her mother and father from her and there was no way she was going to let Gotham take her.

Dinah enjoys that the hero community has expanded to the point she does sometimes wonder if there is any need for the Black Canary to be around anymore. However, she doesn’t like that in the new reality they find themselves in, the bad guys also got together as well as the good guys, their numbers increasing like insects out of the wood work. She does wish things were simple but her life hadn’t been simple since she discovered her voice could bring down buildings. IS IT WEIRD TO THEM TO SEE MULTIPLE TYPES OF PEOPLE AND CREATURES AROUND? OR ARE THEY USED TO IT? WERE THEY ORIGINALLY FROM ONE OF THE TWO MAIN CITIES - OR SOMEWHERE ELSE? Dinah is freaked out by the other creatures as she is more used to ‘down to earth’ crime such as drug rings, criminal organisations or perhaps secret societies full of assassins. However, she had tangled with her fair share of demons and metahumans in her time and, perhaps more surprisingly, she didn’t have to resort to her Canary Cry to kick their ass. Whether it be demon or human, Dinah never backs down from a fight. Dinah is originally from Gotham City but lived in Star City ever since she was in her late teens.

Dinah was commuting from Gotham City back to Star City. Having stepped back from the Justice League to a reserve member, she wanted to focus back on how she started; fighting crime on the streets with her family, Team Arrow, and her best friends, the Birds of Prey, reuniting with either team when they needed the Black Canary.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Soooo, I mash several canons for my Dinah from the comics and kinda twisted it into my own version. I don’t consider Arrow canon at all because they do my queen so dirty. However if we get a Sara, come holla cause I have a whole plot we can do and backstory to fit her in pls.

Also Dinah being a singer is canon in her early years. She was a hired singer for the Iceberg Lounge. Her voice was said to have moved Oswald Cobblepot to tears.

Dinah Lance is ranked as being one of the best fighters in DC so please respect that. Barbara at one point even stated that if her and Bruce had a no bars fight with no powers or gadgets that the two would be evenly matched.

First thing is go the fuck to Disneyland and take my best friends with me. After that I’d pay off people’s GoFundMes and shit. Aries spoken languages. a dozen easily, but mainly english, mandarin, french, russian, german, spanish

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS.

what is something your character likes about new gotham? something they dislike? do they miss the way things were - or do the like how the world is now? For Dinah, this is no different than what Gotham was to her. A city that hid a lot of dark secrets and death. Despite her desire to do good, Dinah has kept her head low and stayed out of trouble until she gets a feel for this new world. However, this hasn’t stopped her acting out and protecting those in need, never being able to turn her back on those who need help.

where was your character when everything changed? are they suspicious of everyone or are they trying to remain under the radar? have they reunited with their friends or are they lost? Dinah was in her apartment when everything changed. She has resorted to keeping her head below the radar, using singing as a way to make her money.

DC comics White Canary backstory

So I finally read White Canary issues of Birds of Prey comics in full. I’m catching up on Birds of Prey comics I missed out on. I don’t know why people say the White Canary is “a big mystery like the Joker”. No background. No name (that part is true). No identity other than an Asian assassin. Is this just empty noncomic book reader second-hand knowledge passed around lost in translation? Or was it people trying to downplay the character to make it seem less bad the Sara Lance took over her story in another Arrow whitewashing special? Most likely just lack information and the little know lost as the story was passed around.

White Canary’s got a backstory. She’s 19 years old. She’s the only daughter of Haung who created a cult of warriors called Twelve Brothers in Silk. Her father was a legendary undefeatable fighter whose heart grew bitter at the thought of his eventual defeat. So decided to pass along his gifts. He believed in the Chinese Zodiac and took many (forced) wives. Each child who had the misfortune of being born a girl or the wrong year was killed right away. Each child who lived was branded with their Zodiac sign. He trained them brutally, made them twisted, natured their anger & hateful aspects. Before the year of their 13th birth, he asked them to kill him. so he would never be defeated and would live on, defeating his enemies throughout eternity. It was thought he only 12 sons, but he had one daughter who lived and trained beside her brothers. When White Canary was born during a thunderstorm the midwife asked Huang to spare his daughter’s life and allow someone else to raise her. The mother was already near death due to blood loss giving birth since Haung won’t allow her to be taken to the hospital to give birth. Haung threated to kill the midwife if she didn’t go drownd the baby in the river. The midwife agreed to kill the baby and turned around get the child and two seconds later she was killed by lightning. Even though she was much shorter then Haung and they right beside each other. He took that as sign that child was meant to live. He told her brother Rabbit it was his responsibility to care for the child and to go feed it as it was hungry and walked away. 

19 years later Dinah Lance fought with Brother in Silk twice. The frist battle was insulting to them in the way Dinah kind shamed them and the second was a true battle which ended in draw when drugs the Brothers were hired to protect who destroyed. Dinah seeing no clear sign of winning offered Rabbit to call fight draw and he accepted. White Canary took that as such a dishonor she killed all ALL her brothers. Then she made it her mission to take revenge on the Black Canary for creating the dishonor. She kidnapped Sin and her adoptive parents, framed Dinah for murder, and convinced Lady Shiva to take part in a fight to the death with Sin’s life hanging in balance and whole ‘family honor’ thing. Since Lady Shiva actually likes Dinah she agreed to help her to ensure Sin wasn’t killed as a careless pawn. (fucked up I know). Huntress messed up White Canary’s plans to fight Dinah to death but insulting Lady Shavia and challenging her to fight to the death which also included same terms of White Canary’s challenge aka the matter is settled with Huntress vsLady Shiva's fight not Black Canary vs White Canary. Dinah used the fight to buy time to recused Sin and halted the battle between Huntress and Lady Shiva and White Canary was forced to agree to the terms of battle and was honor bound not to attack Dinah again over this. Aka Dinah’s ‘it’s a battle to the death but they didn’t say when. Could be in 40 years’ won. Unwilling to face Lady Shiva, Black Canary, & others White Canary gave up on her revenge quest telling them all that that she’ll get revenge in death even if it takes 40 years. That she wants their every night to be haunted by fears of her. 

So she’s pretty bloody hardcore and fanatical about family honor and honor code. It was her undoing because Helena outsmarted her by challenging Lady Shiva using that system of code against her. Her brothers weren’t easy to defeat. When Dinah faced them she had  Conner Hawke, Huntress, Wildcat, Richard Dragon, Saviant, and Creote in vicious battle to the death. Oh yeah and Lady Blackhawk in a plane with a bomb which blew up the drugs and allowed for an end to the fighting so can’t forget her. Dinah also had no Canary Cry due being attacked with wire around her neck earlier in book. During that battle Dinah wore a white outfit not her usual Black Canary outfit into battle. I wonder if that’s where the White Canary came from or if it was just opposite of Black Canary?

I often read well Sara an assassin and White Canary was an assassin in the comics like it’s solid link for characters but it’s like reducing Black Canary to just fighting skills. Just because White Canary was an assassin doesn’t make it ok for Sara to be whitewashed and override her story. Sara had her superhero identity - the Canary. She’s awesome as is. There was no need to take on the title White Canary. Naming her the Yellow Canary would’ve worked just as well for Laurel’s stepping out of the darkness into the light speech and Sara’s transition in Legends. I feel like Marc just randomly heard the name, maybe read online mini comic summery of White Canary and saw ‘assassin’ with no name and went ‘Perfect’ to steal for my OC! Though he doesn’t really care comic book character has a name and is well known he’ll bastardize their story and slap it on OC no matter what. Like Connor Hawke & Dinah Drake.
