My DJuncan Manifesto

A.K.A.: Why DJuncan makes more narrative sense then Duncney while fulfilling the same basic trope.

(Preface: wrote this a couple weeks ago when I was crazy sick and I watched s1 a couple months ago so I might be wrong actually but if I am no I'm not xoxo)

Duncan finding DJ a new bunny is used solely as a plot device to push Duncan and Courtney together via the whole tough boy has a soft side bit. That's fine, obviously, but within the show its poorly written (shocker). Not only is it a plot device, but a shallow one at that.

As its framed within the show, this action's primary purpose is simply to demonstrate to Courtney that Duncan isn't all tough. Aside from this, its consequences character-wise and dynamic-wise are inconsistent. It doesn't necessarily further his friendship with DJ in any big way, like you think it would, and it doesn't even show to the overall group that he has a soft side, it happens just so Courtney can see him being thoughtful and caring and then go Oh wait tough guy isn't so tough he's so cutesy omg heart eyes. And from memory there are few, if any, other instances of soft Duncan moments happening around this point, which is lazy because they had him do one thing and called it a day on that point.

So not only is it lazy in that he does that one thing and then he's soft with little to no other supporting characterisation, but the justification they use for him empathising with DJ is also super lazy. Duncan lost a pet when he was younger? Sure, okay, but why not just make them best friends and maybe even in love??? Just kidding.

Really, though, this fails to actually hold together because of the inconsistency outside of Duncney. It only serves to further Duncan and Courtney's relationship, so therefore it can be concluded he only does that in order for them to get together. I.e., this is poor writing (but who is surprised...).

If it were written well, and in order to make more narrative sense, the focus would have been more so on the dynamic between Duncan and DJ, with maybe the Courtney stuff as a B plot if you really must...

I propose, however, that we cut out the middle man by making the middle man the main man---DJ being the middle man---and just have this bunny incident be the catalyst for their epic romance. This would unequivocally make the writing cleaner, tighter and stronger.

And as a sidenote: DJuncan.

And, of course, as its been pointed out before, if opposites attract is what you want, then look no further than DJuncan. It fulfills the same trope while being healthier and more interesting actually.

made a full circle to gen1posting..... i love duncan with my heart and soul but in a way nobody else does. hes awful and he sucks but thats what makes me like him. he dated mal in juvie. him and trent were a thing for like . a week . maybe less then a week . him and alejandro have dated and broken up within the same day at least 8 times. he is actually the boyfailure ever. i think after all stars he left courtney alone to go pursue guys. they left it on a good note they apologized to each other. eventually. he never actually settles down with anyone . at least for a while . the list of people hes dated for less then a week is Expansive . something ive seen Absolutely nobody considering is duncan and justin(dustin ?????) they are so real to me. they do not like each other actually they hate each other but in an absolutely romantic way. they walked so scike could run. i appreciate a lot of duncan ships actually. dunhar is up there with dustin(??) but slightly below it cause of the fandoms interpretation of them. harold is taller then duncan take that information in stride. they are so real to me though they play videogames together they are the gross not at all romantic relationship i need. one i have seen literally NOBODY ever talk about is duncan and owen they are so real. and pretty healthy considering it includes duncan. ..dowen ???? SWEEP!!!!! idk i think people just need to slap duncan and random men together until something sticks more. hes insanely shippable in a surprising way. ive been forgetting to sign off ghhh. REAL YEAH. I never really cared for Duncan first watch but when I really thought about it he's one of the most entertaining characters. he's literally the worst ever. his entire family is police and he still downright refuses to follow the law. everyone exaggerates how terrible he is. he's literally just a bitch he isn't any worse than anyone else. he keeps a list (habit he picked up from Courtney) of people he dates for less than a week. it is genuinely a mile long. Alejandro is on the list at least 40 times, every single man is listed multiple times.

also Dustin is real as fuck. like genuinely you're such a genius. personally I'm a fan of djuncan because they drive me insane but Dustin is sooo good. also it has a really good ship name. all of his ships are pretty good tbh. you're such a genius and so real

Consider: het Djuncan. I think it would work as like a 3-4 episode ship in a 26 episode season. DJ is super supportive and affirming of his girlfriend in a way Duncan finds appealing and refreshing — with Geoff leading the other guys with 100% good intentions to overly downplay the gender stuff — overemphasizing how she’s still “one of the guys” and not really considering or realizing why she might not be 100% in love with the idea of remaining in the guys’ side of the cabin or using the men’s showers etc.

Relationship falls apart/fizzles out when DJ’s first class Mama-honed etiquette with how to treat a lady starts to become suffocating (she’s his girlfriend she’s not made of glass). Duncan is initially peeved but it still ends amicably.

intrigued but confused. why is duncan a girl? does she stop being a girl after the 3-4 episodes? dj is already a lesbian so if duncan was a girl that would make this yuri. why is he a girl like i'm gonna be real i'm obsessed with duncan being a girl for like a week then being like nvm it's whatever. but. through what sequence of events. bc what i'm picturing is kinda like when he fucked lightning in drama mia he sees dj dating his ex and is like how are you doing that. what's the big deal

but your second paragraph here. she's like i'm your girlfriend not made of glass. also i'm not a girl anymore i just decided so suck it. and then just moves on like nothing happened. i don't think i'm getting your vision i think my vision is very different from yours.
