My DJuncan Manifesto

A.K.A.: Why DJuncan makes more narrative sense then Duncney while fulfilling the same basic trope.

(Preface: wrote this a couple weeks ago when I was crazy sick and I watched s1 a couple months ago so I might be wrong actually but if I am no I'm not xoxo)

Duncan finding DJ a new bunny is used solely as a plot device to push Duncan and Courtney together via the whole tough boy has a soft side bit. That's fine, obviously, but within the show its poorly written (shocker). Not only is it a plot device, but a shallow one at that.

As its framed within the show, this action's primary purpose is simply to demonstrate to Courtney that Duncan isn't all tough. Aside from this, its consequences character-wise and dynamic-wise are inconsistent. It doesn't necessarily further his friendship with DJ in any big way, like you think it would, and it doesn't even show to the overall group that he has a soft side, it happens just so Courtney can see him being thoughtful and caring and then go Oh wait tough guy isn't so tough he's so cutesy omg heart eyes. And from memory there are few, if any, other instances of soft Duncan moments happening around this point, which is lazy because they had him do one thing and called it a day on that point.

So not only is it lazy in that he does that one thing and then he's soft with little to no other supporting characterisation, but the justification they use for him empathising with DJ is also super lazy. Duncan lost a pet when he was younger? Sure, okay, but why not just make them best friends and maybe even in love??? Just kidding.

Really, though, this fails to actually hold together because of the inconsistency outside of Duncney. It only serves to further Duncan and Courtney's relationship, so therefore it can be concluded he only does that in order for them to get together. I.e., this is poor writing (but who is surprised...).

If it were written well, and in order to make more narrative sense, the focus would have been more so on the dynamic between Duncan and DJ, with maybe the Courtney stuff as a B plot if you really must...

I propose, however, that we cut out the middle man by making the middle man the main man---DJ being the middle man---and just have this bunny incident be the catalyst for their epic romance. This would unequivocally make the writing cleaner, tighter and stronger.

And as a sidenote: DJuncan.

And, of course, as its been pointed out before, if opposites attract is what you want, then look no further than DJuncan. It fulfills the same trope while being healthier and more interesting actually.
