Salvage Showcase - Eichiro Saiyama
...And so I missed the Killer Killer anniversary like, well, a lot! My bad, but trying to find who to do next was pretty difficult. I didn't want to do a salty or disappointed Showcase like the last two, so was trying to focus on who I could write about that I liked.
So on that end I decided to do a Showcase on one of Killer Killer's better serial killers of the week (having a backstory will do that to you) - its Eichiro Saiyama!!!
Tumblr media
Eichiro was a lonely and rather unpopular kid in his youth. The only happy moment he could gather was when one girl complimented his art and said he should be a mangaka.
And so he did!! That moment inspired him to be a manga artist that worked under Comic Ponpon...except the issue of people praising him persisted. While he's surviving the Tragedy enough to continue his work, it should be noted that his work was considered just...okay. Editors or readers, no one really cared for it.
Cue one day, Takumi Hijirihara shows up in a box, going over his work and about one he liked was Eichiro's documentary manga about the Tragedy. It had gotten popular with Takumi for its hyperrealistic graphic displays of death, but there was just one issue.
See, they were a bit too realistic.
Tumblr media
Yeah, Eichiro is a serial killer that murders his victims to use as references in his manga. To be specific, he's a copycat killer that murders his victims in relation to past cases, such as stringing up people to look like Chihiro's corpse.
Takumi deduces his motives were in a vain attempt to gain some praise, and criticizes him for using murder to seek out approval from others, believing attempts like that won't ever sell well. Takumi ranks Eichiro's murder as being 20 points for his misdeeds, and notes that Eiichiro's manga, while he does like it, won't ever be a bestseller since it's just too ordinary (to the point he marks Eichiro's manga as just being 55 points, even though Takumi likes it)
Upon hearing this, Eichiro (who had been progressively losing his mind) snaps and attacks Takumi, trying to kill him with his Wolverine-eqsue pens. But, Takumi get's the leg up and kill Eichiro similarly to how Mukuro Ikusaba died.
Tumblr media
Eichiro is a man that seeks out praise above all else since he sorely lacked that in life. Self-describing himself as dull, he believes his only redeeming quality is his artistic skills since it net him one praise he got in life. He is very sensitive to people dismissing him and his hard work.
Eventually, his need for approval escalated until he became a serial killer, killing others to use as reference for his work out of some desire to gain what he wanted the most.
Rundown
In Killer Killer's theme of Passion vs Shallowness, Eichiro represents Shallowness in the form of attention and represents the dangers of being obsessed with validation from others. He wants people to notice him, and gives him the praise he feels he deserves. It's what fuels him to become a mangaka and drives him to the point that became a copycat killer to try to get what he wanted.
But its all at a detriment to himself. He focused so hard on his artistic skills he neglected his personal life, be it making friends or enjoying life that he made his own self-esteem issues worse. And because what he chased after was something so brief, and in a career so demanding, it had become a cycle of toxic disappointment and desperation. It's basically a self-fulfilling downward spiral in a way.
Another aspect of Eichiro that's telling to his own 'dullness' is the form of manga he made, a documentary, and even his own killing: copycat murders. He's essentially recapping events that most people in the world at the time would be privy about, and committing the cardinal sin for those in the artistic world - plagiarism. No one really cares for his work because he's essentially just regurgitating common knowledge for the public. If he had made something more original, he'd probably would get better success, but given how much he shut himself away to 'hone his talent' he probably doesn't have the life skills or proper imagination for it (and never will thanks to Takumi).
Finally, he's killed in similar way to Mukuro's Spears of Gungnir, though instead of spears its his own pens that kill him. in Danganronpa, ironic murders are all the rage, so you can think of it as symbolizing his own talent - his own crutch and downfall in life - being the one to lead him astray and betray him.
Personal Thoughts
I really like Eichiro, because he's one of the few characters in Killer Killer to be fully fleshed out. In backstory, in motivations, in personality - he's brimming with it in one chapter, when most of the main cast lack it in all 14. (Probably since the writer for KK is speaking from their own feelings in the industry, but that's just me). He's one of the few gems that I can say are good about Killer Killer and wish the other killers replicated. Especially Ted, who debuted in chapter 3.
I also like Eichiro in how he fleshed out an established lore item in DR2, that being the Tragedy manga found in endgame. He's heavily implied to be the author of that, and I always appreciate it when the DR series tries to build upon past continuity. Same reason why I like Koichi or Another Episode! Or later on concepts like the Mukuro Cult. It's building upon and even expanding the world of DR in a pretty good way. And in a 'flash, but little substance' story that Killer Killer seems to tred, stuff like that needs to be treasured.
Also, even as a killer, I just like he's the sort that should have been promoted more - he feels like a realistic DR villain. He's not drinking blood due to thinking it'll make him younger, he doesn't have parasite monsters that break the world - no, he's just a copycat killer trying to use his murders to increase his fame and get him praise. That's it, and God is it refreshing.
In short: Eiichiro is a breath of fresh air in the Killer Killer entry.
-
With that, another Killer Killer entry done! Hope it's a good read, with the next up being, again, the miscellaneous section of the DR novel side.

*Tuesday, February 5th, Hope’s Peak Academy, morning*
Tumblr media
And you’re certain that’s all that happened?
Tumblr media
Yep, it’s all I know for sure.
Tumblr media
I swear, none of us have ever made any deals to become Ultimates. I’m from a normal family, we didn’t bribe anyone or-
Tumblr media
Umesawa-san, it’s okay, really.
Tumblr media
I believe you. You’ve got a solid family history, school career, and I don’t see any reason why you’d do that.
Tumblr media
Yeah...I’m not like Nijiue Emina, I promise.
Tumblr media
Very few people are. But, I do have one question.
Tumblr media
You’ve been speaking with a boy frequently, and even invited him here on a few occasions. He’s not an Ultimate, but he was one of the people who was involved in the Sunny Days Incident.
Tumblr media
Oh...y-you mean Miraz Damian?
Tumblr media
He’s...just a good friend is all.
Tumblr media
A friend?
Tumblr media
Oh...I see how it is.
Tumblr media
S-Sensei, please!
Tumblr media
I’m just worried about him is all. I wanted him to feel like he had people he could trust, but there wasn’t anything bad going on, I swear.
Tumblr media
It’s alright, Umesawa-san, really. You’re in the clear here.
Tumblr media
But, if there’s anything your friend can tell us, will you let us know?
Tumblr media
Sure thing.

Tumblr media
I wasn’t expecting this many cops...
Tumblr media
I know...it’s making nervous.
Tumblr media
It’s alright. Just speak openly and honestly about everything that you’ve experienced here. They want to help us.
Tumblr media
And as members of this Student Council, we’ve done nothing wrong!

Tumblr media
I...don’t really know where I should start...

The school asked me to cover for her, that’s it.

Tumblr media
Why yes, my therapy sessions have been going quite well.

Tumblr media
Clear the hallways, willya?! We ain’t gone time for you all to be skulking around! People have to get to class!
*A trio of cops heeds his word and move down the hall, past a familiar face*
Tumblr media
Hideyoshi really went all out with this...
Cop: I’m sorry, sir, but this is the Main Course.
Tumblr media
Oh?
Tumblr media
I don’t give a damn if this is Mecca. My grandson comes with me, end of story.
Tumblr media
Ask the people in charge. I’m expected here.
Tumblr media
Yeah, and if not, ask my mom.
Cop: Ah...Hinata Hajime. Right, please carry on.
Tumblr media
Atta boy! Thanks for your service!

Now, about time we start meeting with some of your friends and classmates, right?

danganronpa killer killer review
it was my first time reading the manga, i'll probably reread it in the future to do a more complete review
Tumblr media
my opinion of the plot is like a wattpad story that i would do in my 13 years /very derogatory
i liked the designs of the protagonists and i enjoyed the humor of the manga too
I found it a bit confusing to know what era it was in the timeline
There were also times when I stopped and thought "Am I reading the right manga?" "how is this danganronpa" "are you sure this isn't a doujin??" "what am I reading???"
To be honest I didn't feel anything at the end, I couldn't even like or dislike
I would give it 5.5/10

Been wondering this for a while. When exactly did Hijirihara and Asano join the Future Foundation? Or where they already joined from sometime but promoted? I'd assume Hijirihara joined the FF first and the other later since a piece of dialogue from Killer Killer in the beginning mentioned 'Spring', but then again I'm not getting any exact dates. Or is there simply nothing? Another thing is that would it work timeline/story-wise had they joined earlier, or not?
There's really no way to get any exact dates on much of anything in the Danganronpa series, lol. We almost never have precise spans of time (the closest we get is Komaru saying in UDG that she was held captive for "a year and a half"), and we sure as hell never have precise years. You just kinda have to glue together what information you can using what little context we get. We don't even know for certain how much time passes between DR1 and DR2, y'know? There's always going to be guesswork involved.
At least we can tell the order the franchise's stories go in... uh, mostly.
But okay. What can we determine about Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer and its characters?
The obvious answer here that is Asano and Hijirihara could've joined the Future Foundation in *some* capacity at any time since its formation but BEFORE DR3's Future Arc. The Foundation's formation is a vague event that occurs somewhere after the start of The Tragedy but before DR1's Killing Game. Based on that, we can at least intuit that the Future Foundation was officially put together during the year the 78th Class was in lockdown. It's entirely possible, however, that Hijirihara and Asano only joined up after the surviving members of the 78th class were rescued...
Killer Killer as a whole takes place after the 78th Class survivors have been freed and joined up with the Future Foundation... but before and/or possibly even during the time when Naegi goes rogue with Class 77-B and plugs them into the Neo World Program. (We know this because Kirigiri shows up as a member of the Future Foundation in the first half of Danganronpa Gaiden: Killer Killer, and she also shows up at the end of DR2 working with Naegi AFTER he'd been receiving messages from the higher-ups ordering him to bring in the Remnants of Despair. But she's obviously not in any kind of trouble with the Foundation when she appears in DGKK, so... there you go.) Also, for whatever it's worth, we do see that Tengan is already twisted by the back half of the manga. But since we don't really know exactly when he was radicalized, it's probably not worth much.
So with ALL THAT preamble said... I think the manga makes it pretty clear that Hijirihara was part of the special investigations unit before Asano was paired up with him. I've no idea how long he was there, but consider this: Asano says that she's newly assigned to the Special Crime Investigations unit on page one of the manga. That could imply either a previous post within the FF OR that she's just been assigned a place within the Future Foundation as a whole for the first time. Can't say. But it'd make the most sense if she was elsewhere in the sixth branch specifically, because then she'd already have a police background before joining the special team.
Then again:
Tumblr media
"Recruiting newcomers" could be interpreted to imply that Asano is totally new to the sixth branch. Or does it just mean that she's a newcomer to this particular team, and nothing more? Choose your own adventure! (Also, if we assume that Dōgami isn't just making up the story about her predecessor as a way to frighten/motivate Asano, then at least it's safe to say that Hijirihara's had other partners before her.)
Uh, so... yeah. We can't even definitively say how much experience, if any, the POV character has when the story begins. This is the kind of thing we have to deal with. But this sort of hazy timeline gives fans a lot of wiggle room in terms of how they want to headcanon things or what they wanna write in fanfics.

Forgot to upload one of my final art fight attacks so here we go! I had so much fun drawing this character because i love robots and characters with more than two arms are just "chefs kiss" so when i saw this design i had to go for it and i'm so proud/happy with how this piece turned out (despite some small flaws **cough**headisalilbitwonky**cough**) and i'm glad i was able to finish this in time for the end of artfight. - This character design belongs to DrKK on Tumblr, please go check her out! She has some neat characters

you can pass off dr3 anime mukuro's characterization, and that's absolutely fine since it trashed her character, but you can't set aside killer killer, even though she basically has the same characterization from dr3? drkk has no influence on dr canon as a whole, and mukuro was only written in to give takumi trauma, and therefore some motivation/character, but (the real) mukuro here is no different than her dr3 counterpart (both of which are ultimately just better to forget about, imo). mukuro has always been a mass murderer, by all technicalities, but if you hate her for what happened in drkk, but not for any of the events of dr0 or dr that she personally handled, like murdering hpa chairmen and almost all the madarais, or wiping her classmates' memories and forcing them into a mutual killing while pretending to know none the better in their midst, then that's just... hypocritical. it's understandable to not want to see mass murdering at schools in this day and age, even the fictional ones, but that kind of thing LONG since happened in dr canon before it was laid out in any exact details, since mukuro was also at fault for like, the whole world falling to despair. she's certainly capable of great horrors, and also stark changes in faith, if given the opportunity (of which she had None while she was Junko's sister and right-hand). but really, if you hold just One mass murder against her bc it was at a school, then I think you just hate her tbh.

Oops this could be kind of angsty but like... Kyoko nd Byakuya come across the Makoto corpse doll and think he actually died for a second before Makoto comes and is just like, "Oh yeah, they made a doll of me lol. It looks so real"
Actually I 100% think that Naegi doesn't know about the doll either because Sakakura only asked for it to be Naegi because he fuc king HATES him.
So they're both freaked out and Kirigiri even starts an investigation on the body and then Naegi walks in like "hey guys what are you-AAHHHHHH WHAT IS THAT"
