The Emulation of Insects.

In the next decade, it is likely a Graphene Molecular Transistor will be developed. It may even save the end of Moore's Law, by allowing chips to be produced at the subatomic level.  This technology will enable tiny drones to be made, barely the size of normal insects. Tiny drones that could act independently, mimicking insect behaviours. The drones are not immediately apparent, hovering innocuously amongst other various insects. The exquisitely realistic flowers rendered alongside the unmistakably artificial miniature drones explore the possibilities of not only the forms synthetic materials can take, but potential behaviours / uses as well.

The Emulation Of Insects

This painting attempts to draw out some of the distinction of these individual masters. The miniature drones were an opportunity to introduce a subversive / disruptive element to the entire composition.

The drones at first glance could be a trick of the light, ordinary insects going about their business. The ‘natural’ insects are clearly visible after all... Are they just paint? Images that we interpret as drones? Or do the blur of the rota blades seem as real as the butterflies wings, frozen mid-motion?

The Old Masters: birth of the Flower Study genre

Around 1620 an annual flower market was started in Frankfurt.  Exchanges of plant matter took placed between European stately gardens, as new flowers were extremely costly. Speculation fuelled a booming trade, most famously in Holland, where fortunes were made and lost in the Tulip Mania.

Interest in flowers blossomed.

Such great interest coincided – or perhaps triggered – the creation of a new genre of painting. Lead by the Netherlands, and the ‘big 3’, the Flower Study was born.  

The painters of Ghent / Bruges School became interested in producing flowers in minute detail, usually at the very edges of their pictures. Opening a new world of possibilities by reproducing the whole world of creatures that live on or near flowers: butterflies, dragonflies, beetles, birds, lizards, and so on.  

The oldest true ‘Flower Studies’ are those completed by Jan Brueghel, Ambrosius Bosschaert and Roeland Savery, all between 1605 and 1637. To me, these three painters are the founders of flower painting as a genre. Each had their own take on the subject: Breughel the paints specialist, Bosschaert the scientific observer, and Savery as the idealist romantic.
