March 26, 1945, marked the end of the 36-day long battle that resulted in over 26,000 American casualties, including 6,800 killed in action.

The battle for Iwo Jima also saw 27 Medals of Honor awarded to Marine and Navy personnel for gallantry above and beyond the call of duty.

It’s a work in progress. I am happy with it thus far. I have a long way to go, but that’s okay. I can be pleased with my progress 😊

I hid all the layers but the blackline (top) for this picture.

Here’s my thoughts.

The hat is still an issue, looks like a lopsided halo. I might need to get my paws on an actual one. I’m trying to mentally rotate something I’ve never held, nor seen from the underside.

The nose still needs a little work, but this is an angle I’m not used to drawing. I spent a lot of time today redlining and redrawing. It’s not just about making the nose realistic. Because she’s a pin-up, she needs to have a cute nose. I can’t lean purely into “technical anatomical accuracy,” I need to make sure it’s aesthetically pleasing.

The final thing that bugs me is NOT anything I have control over. The tines on the anchor do not match.

That is -accurate!- to the Marines’ Eagle-on-Globe, and it bugs the heck out of me! I want to know WHY it is not the same. What’s the symbolism? The history? The heckin’ reason?!?

The eagle feathers on the wings aren’t exactly 100% to the emblem, but I took artistic liberties there to make it look more correct. I make no apologies.

In September 2020, I wrote a fic called I'll Find You. It was a John/Hector WWII AU, based on this photo and story.

It sparked a trilogy of short stories. John was a gunner for the US Navy aboard a Dumbo PBY. Hector was the Marine Corps pilot he rescued after being shot down in the bay of Rabaul, like the story behind the photograph. In my version, of course, they fell in love.

In Remember Hawaii, they meet again on a weekend liberty in Hawaii, and start to dream of a future together.

In And Say We'll Never Part, John has been discharged from the Navy and waits for Hector to get out. They move in together, find friends and allies, and get their happily ever after in San Diego.

This isn't a long series, not really long enough for a full-sized book. But I have wanted it bound for as long as it's been complete. I wanted something in a full-cloth binding, like what was popular in the 1940s. I wanted something that would honor the story that snuck up on me and infiltrated my heart.

This series is a love letter to the LGBTQ+ members of the Armed Forces who have always served their country (any country) with valor.

So let's talk about the binding materials. The book cloth is battlefield brown (the sort of brown that was fairly common for cloth binding. The end papers are Navy blue. The signatures are sewn in a rich blue cotton thread, honoring the naval service that bound John and Hector to each other. The bookmark ribbon is red, like a blood stripe, which Hector would have worn on his dress blues.

The blood stripe is a red band that runs up the trousers of Marine Corps dress blues, for Marines ranked corporal (E-4) and above. According to Marine Corps legend, the blood stripe commemorates the battle of Chapultepec in 1847 (the blood stripe was actually on the uniform before then, but Marines love their legends), specifically the non-commissioned officers (corporals and up) who died in the battle. It's even the first line in the Marine Corps hymn: "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli."

Anyway, I digress. Battlefield brown. Navy end papers and thread. Blood stripe bookmark. Oh and the title? Insignia gold, like the rate John would have worn on his collar, or his ruptured duck when we got out. Hector probably would have been an officer (because he was a pilot) so his Eagle Globe and Anchor would have been gold.
