Whitechapel series 3 press pack
Steve Pemberton plays Edward Buchan
For Ed Buchan, becoming part of DI Chandler’s team is like all of his Christmas’s coming at once as Steve explains.
“It’s his dream come true in many ways,” he says.  “Buchan is someone who has very much been an aid to Chandler and although he has been proven right in previous cases, there’s still a lot of mistrust and non-acceptance of him as a fully-fledged police aide.  So for him to be able to come and move his pot-plant and his personal knick-knacks into his own room in the police station, is his absolute dream come true.”
Having his own office space has given Buchan a greater sense of self-importance and confidence and ultimately more autonomy within that team as well.
“In the first story he certainly gets carried away and takes it upon himself to hold a briefing, which is completely unofficial and very much to Chandler’s annoyance,” explains Steve.  “He takes over the incident room, has people doing the lights, calling them ushers and commandeers the powerpoint presentation.  So it’s true to say that it all goes to his head a bit.”
Buchan’s job is to report directly to Chandler.  “He’s turned himself into Jane Tennyson in Prime Suspect and mistakenly thinks he’s more senior than he is, but quickly gets taken down a peg or two by Chandler.”
Having his room in the basement keeps him separate from the team but one by one the rest of the team find themselves calling on his expertise to help with the investigations.
“He is not actually a fully fledged part of the team - its very dark and he’s happy being surrounded by paperwork and files and historical documents, because that’s what he knows about. He’s not so comfortable being around bodies and forensics and autopsies in the mortuary, so he’s in the building, but locked in his own world.”
It’s not all plain sailing for Buchan and we see his confidence knocked throughout the series.
“He sort of goes through a journey over the course of the three stories,” explains Steve.  “He starts off very confident, then he loses a lot of it in the second case because he feels he’s made mistakes and that he hasn’t done everything he could to help save the lives of the victims.”
“He beats himself up a lot over that until he realises, with the help of a therapist, that he can’t save every life and that if you’re going to do this job, i.e. work for the police, then you’ve got to accept that.”
In some ways the pressure is greater for Buchan than it is for the bone fide police teams he works with.
“Before, in previous cases, Buchan was being asked for his opinion as an expert on the subject, and he gave his opinion willingly as he wasn’t directly involved with it.  Now they are coming to him looking for answers in an official capacity and he definitely feels that pressure.”
Whilst Buchan appears to seek Miles’ acceptance Steve believes it is acceptance from the other policemen that he is really after.
“By the time we get to the final story, what you see is all the different members of the team, Kent, Riley and Mansell, come down to seek advice from Buchan individually. So over the series, its very cleverly done, there’s a growing acceptance.  I think Miles will be the last one to fall.”
“With a crime scene you’ve only got a limited amount of stuff you can do,” he continues. “With the whole of crime history that’s a huge amount to try and get your head around.”
Buchan believes that there’s a missing piece in a jigsaw and if he can just find that missing piece, he’ll help solve a crime.
“He has a very logical way of thinking about things and some of the team like Miles for example, rely a lot more on intuition and being face to face with a suspect or a witness and being able to read them. I don’t think Buchan has those skills; his lie more in academic studies. So he really beats himself up if he feels he doesn’t know everything.  So he’s under a lot of pressure.”
Steve Pemberton is known for playing off the wall characters in Psychoville but he particularly likes playing Ed Buchan.
“There’s an awful lot in there to play with,” says Steve. “In the first serial there was this notion that he could be a suspect, he had quite a creepy interest in Jack the Ripper which was fun to play.
“When the second serial moved onto the Kray twins it was a more emotional kind of Buchan that emerged as he investigated the death of Miles’ father,” he continues.
“Buchan also has some great comedic moments and some very emotional scenes where he feels this tremendous guilt at being unable to solve the cases and he breaks down and yet, against that backdrop, you’ve got the fruity language that he uses with relish and that’s what I love about him.”
Steve is known for Whitchapel, The League of Gentlemen and Psychoville but has recently turned his hand to writing Benidorm, in which he also stars and has written three of the seven episodes in the forthcoming series.
“In terms of my writing career, I’m interested in anything that can surprise the audience and I enjoy putting stuff on screen that you haven’t seen before which was one of the great challenges about Psychoville,” he remarks.
“Reece Shearsmith and I have always had a very dark sense of humour and I think that just comes out whatever we’re writing,” he laughs.  “It’s the combination of horror and comedy, of being scared one minute and laughing the next that we enjoy. Which is a very potent combination and I’ve loved doing that.”
“Variety is also fantastic and you couldn’t get more variety than writing and acting in Benidorm and then doing Whitechapel and Psychoville.  There’s a dark message, even in Benidorm. Just that tiny cry of darkness that people enjoy, people like stuff that isn’t all gleaming, shining, happy families. I think it allows it to be real and we all have a bit of darkness inside us.”

Whitechapel for the ask game! 🩷 (I had to ask!)
omg thank you! i have a very limited set of favourites and am probably out of step with most of the fandom lmao
favourite character: edward buchan my beloved
funniest character: my beloved boy mansell is the funniest, but also chandler and ed have some cracking lines
best-looking character: meg and chandler
3 favourite ships: riley/buchan (my ride or die), riley/mansell (they'd kill each other, but hey i think it'd be neat), sometimes i don't mind chandler/miles either
least favourite character: i never cared about kent, soz babe
least favourite ship: for the reason above, i was never into chandler/kent
reason why i watch it: honestly it kinda creeps me out too much to rewatch now lmao, i enjoyed s3 the most and i remember being so terrified during the last season about what was going to happen to these characters that i really cared about that i don't think i ever recovered
why i started watching it: yet again, it's the six degrees of robin hood! i watched spooks because richard armitage was in it, then whitechapel because penry was in it

My 2022 in Books
This year I read 78 books which is a step down from the last few years (all 100+) but I'm trying to read in a more purposeful, slow way, trying to savor and absorb what I read, which is definitely a challenge since I've always been a very speedy reader.

The team: Whoops
Chandler: Whoops? Whoops? This is not a "Whoops" situation. We are far past whoops. "Whoops" is a distant speck in the rearview mirror. We are solidly in "Oh fuck" territory, and I expect you to act like it.

Whitechapel series 4 press pack
Steve Pemberton plays Edward Buchan
What’s it like being back on set for Whitechapel?
It’s like a familiar machine now we all know each other. A lot of the crew are the same, the director (Jon East) is back again this year and as a cast we all get on really well.
Tell us what to expect in the new series:
In this series everyone is affected by the station, a bit like The Shining where the hotel takes over the characters. There is a sense that there is something supernatural that we can’t control, with biblical references. It’s not your standard police show but then Whitechapel never has been. Buchan finds mould and mildew in the archive which of course is devastating to him because he has all this valuable paperwork down there so he becomes a bit obsessive with that. There will be lots in the new series, what I think it is, and what I hope it is – is the scariest series yet.
What else is happening with Buchan in this series?
Buchan is launching a book in the new series, and he’s been pushed into making it a bit more sensationalist than he wanted it to – he’s a bit embarrassed about that side of it. He becomes a little bit more romantic and sets himself up on a little date, whether that ends well or not we’ll have to see but there certainly are a lot of things going on for him in this series. You definitely start to see a softer side to Buchan.
Do you think the rest of the team have accepted Buchan now?
I think there was an awful lot of culture clash at the beginning, especially with Phil’s character. Buchan’s been proved right on a number of occasions, and that’s the show’s strength really, how you use the past to help solve present day crimes. So I think there is an acceptance and he does feel more part of the team.
In the first series they wanted to think of Buchan as a potential suspect because he relishes the horrific details of the murders, Jack the Ripper in particular. I still quite like the fact that he relishes what he’s talking about but I don’t think you believe he is suspect anymore so that element has gone. He’s become more human in a way. I think that’s important, he’s not just an eccentric.
What can you tell us about your episodes?
The idea for my stories is that the victims are found flayed alive. Ben and Caroline – the creators of Whitechapel gave me this to work with. I looked at stuff to do with skin, tattoos etc. I did an awful lot of research. It’s hopefully very exciting and creepy. It draws on the likes of Silence of the Lambs and Texas Chainsaw Massacre which were all inspired by the case of Ed Gien, a notorious killer in America in the 1950s. So hopefully it will be perfect Whitechapel material!
Did Ben and Caroline give you a story arc to stick to?
No, they gave me a paragraph and said it’s about flaying and off I went. Obviously I’ve never done this before, Ben and Caroline have never not written them before so it was a new process for all of us. I was writing the middle block of three, so I didn’t know what was coming before my story, which meant I was in the dark a little bit to begin with.
How did you find the writing process?
It wasn’t easy to write but I really enjoyed it. I was in a similar position when I wrote Benidorm last series. If you’re in a show and you know it very well and you know the people, the characters – it really helps. So I wasn’t starting from scratch from that
point of view. Even knowing the actors and what they do well, what their personalities are like, knowing how much their personal characters are like the characters they play and where they’re not – you can use all of that. I really enjoyed writing the banter between the characters. All the historical research, certainly all the information my character, Buchan comes up with is true, it always has been in Whitechapel. So I knew I had to do a lot of work to make sure it was authentic and felt right.
Did you give yourself most of the lines?
I don’t think I gave myself the best lines! You’re always very aware when you’re writing and I think the balance is right. I get out of the archive which is my little home for most of the series so I thought it would be quite nice to get out on location. But with being so cold I wish I’d stayed in my archive now rather than being in freezing locations!
With your background in comedy, was it difficult leaving the humour out of Whitechapel?
I think anything benefits from having humour, and the last thing you want is having a humourless detective series so I have put bits of humour in, some jokes. Rupert’s character isn’t laugh a minute, jokey character but I’ve given him a few moments where he tries to make a joke and nobody laughs and he has to say ‘that was a joke’, stuff like that in itself is quite amusing. If they’re going to ask me to write they have to expect a certain degree of humour in there and hopefully that comes out. I like to think I’ve pushed the boat out a little bit but it has to be the same show. You’re very aware when you take on a job like that that you have to fit in to an existing format and it doesn’t need re-inventing – it’s a fantastic show!
How do you mix horror and humour?
I’ve always enjoyed mixing comedy and horror in my writing. I enjoy thinking of ways to be unsettling or creepy, for you to watch something that I’ve done and for it to stay in your mind. I love that Whitechapel doesn’t take itself too seriously. In terms of writing and acting in a series I couldn’t be more at home it’s fantastic! Anything that challenges your everyday life or makes you feel something different, creates a buzz in you is exhilarating. So often people watch something and it’s forgettable, people ask what you watched last night and you can’t remember. I think it’s important to create moments that people talk about.
Did you do all of the research yourself?
I did all the research myself, I suppose there are parallels with Buchan in that sense, I have my own little room in Muswell Hill where I live, I have my own office there. What people did before Google and online I simply don’t know – it must have taken writers years to put a script together! The amount of trips to a library they must have done, we’ve got everything at our fingertips now, but as Buchan would say – you can’t believe everything on the internet, you’ve got to check and make sure you get everything from two sources!
Do you have any other similarities to Buchan?
There is a little bit of Buchan in me, I like to be very organised. I’m not the kind of person who could just blag it. But only in terms of being very organised really, I don’t look at a lot of true crime, I’d rather read a novel than read about that – so our interests aren’t the same but there is a little bit to draw on.
Have you met many people like Buchan through your research?
In the first series of Whitechapel we all went on a Jack the Ripper tour where I met a very preeminent Ripperologist, I think it’s a very competitive game – these tours all
go to the same places, they all know each other, some of them are quite theatrical others are more restrained – it’s a really interesting community.
What did you enjoy the most about writing the scripts?
It’s the combination of characters, that’s what I enjoyed when writing the script. Also the nature of the crimes and the way it’s shot – it’s a very stylish show and the fact that it uses a lot of horror influences and not just cop show influences. I think that a lot of cop shows end up being fairly generic because, for example, you have the scene of the crime and a particular structure to adhere to – and you have to, of course, fit into those certain patterns as I soon learnt – but to be able to draw on really scary stories and use horror films as your inspiration as well as other cop shows really broadens the horizon. I think people enjoy being scared and they say – ‘oh no I can’t watch it’ – well obviously they do!
Do you follow real life cases with more interest than before now?
No I don’t think I’m an armchair Buchan, but certainly when you’re in the middle of writing something you are more interested in how the police have done something or what clues they’re following. When I was writing Benidorm last year I would look around me and think – those people are carrying their cases like that, or watching people’s behaviour in the airport, so whatever you’re writing at the time I think you do look around you and see what influences you can get.
Do you watch a lot of crime shows?
My favourite one at the moment is Dexter – I think that is a fantastic show, it’s very much got the Whitechapel vibe about it because they mix humour and horror and it’s quite strong without it being overly gory.
Did you think Whitechapel would be a one-off?
I thought Whitechapel was going to be a one off because it was such a perfect little story about a modern day Jack the Ripper. Then in the last series we discovered this wonderful gothic, historic feel and we didn’t limit the crimes that we were looking into, because there are only a certain number of copycats you can have in a few square feet of London. I think it’s now hit a point where it can carry on and it’s really exciting
- I think this series is scarier and creepier than ever.
What’s next for you?
I’m going straight from Whitechapel to film Benidorm series 6. I haven’t written any of the episodes this year but I’m really looking forward to it. Myself and Reece Sheersmith have written a series of six self contained dark playlets called Inside No.
9. We’ve filmed three of those and we have three more to film, we’ve got a great cast lined up and that should be on later this year. We all still get on so well and it’s wonderful that after 20 years when we met doing League of Gentlemen that we’re still working together doing fantastic varied stuff.

Headcanons flirting with Edward and him being oblivious to your true intentions.

* So this man is a treasure, right? Right.
* He does like you, he’s just too self-conscious to do anything about it, especially after the disaster with Meg. So he does nothing, convincing himself that he is happy to just be your friend.
* You are younger than him, smart, funny and so full of life, and Ed doesn’t believe that someone like you might fall for him. And boy is he wrong!
* You would notice the first signals of course being detective and all. So you start with something innocent
* Complimenting his jumpers and sweaters
“Oh, Ed, looking good. Blue suits you very well, brings out your eyes.”
He looked up from his desk and you wink, smiling. Immediately his face turned two shades darker.
“Th-thank you…” he’d stutter, adjusting his glasses to avoid looking at you.
* Bringing him coffee/tea just the way he likes it
* Sometimes leaving notes on his desk to brighten up his day a little
It’s something simple like “Have a great day :)” or “I love your smile ;)”, but it leaves him a blushing mess nonetheless. He’ll be smiling all day.
* Bringing him little gifts like a chocolate bar or new notepad with a beautiful cover.
* Once he gets used to your attention, he starts to do the same for you.
* You are excited at first, but quickly realise that he does it as a friend
* Your heart melts anyway, because he is just so cute when he is all flustered.
* Seeing how your subtle flirting doesn’t really work you start to think of a new plan.
