BEAU X EVERGLADES READER??

Yan Unicorn + Everglades/Nature Lover Darling
-
"Guys.... Crazy story, but I'm out here standing a feet away from one of the prettiest horses I have ever seen in my life-"
You are aware they could hear you- right? Whilst bitter towards their unique brand of beauty being compared to that of a common creature - Beau had to give you credit where it was due. The emphys in your voice as you declare them one of the most beautiful things you've ever seen makes you a more tolerable presence than previous humans "guests" they've had to deal with, and the brunt of the reason you were still standing to begin with.
"So I'm out here, taking my daily walk in the woods as usual - but I was feeling a little adventurous today and decided to go a little further than usual. Got lost almost instantly, but I'd say it's worth it. You guys won't believe me when I say this is one majestic motherfucker."
Beau recalls hearing a saying that flattery gets you nowhere - clearly the human who came up with that phrase was more foolish than any human that's stumbled upon their land before. As you spoke, your body was perfectly positioned to hide theirs from the camera - revealing little more but the lush foliage around their hooves. A sign of respect, the unicorn assumed paired with your fair distance. A human that understands boundaries.... to a certain extent, and compliments them well. Company like that is rare given their looks and power. Beau would never admit it himself, but it does get quite lonely as the only unicorn in this forest.
"I'd give my kidney to go over there and pet them, but I don't wanna scare them off either."
A tall silhouette casts your smaller figure into darkness. You hardly even notice for a few seconds as you relay your experiences to your phone - head snapping upwards as its snatched straight from your hands.
"It's pretty rude to be hook on technology while in the company of someone else... It may be wise to teach you some manners, but I'm willing to let things slide and return your device if you tell me more about yourself."
"...Sounds like a good deal to me!... Can I ride you?"
"My.... At least ask a person's name before being so bold.. Maybe there is a thing or two I should teach you..."
".... So, is that a maybe?

Jealousy-Eli Hale
As you were walking out from school, you were trying to find Eli, your boyfriend, to ask him something. You knew it was the full moon tonight, and you wanted to help, but you didn't want to intrude. You've been helping him out for a while now. Whether you were planning on helping or not, Derek would always end up calling you to come help. You could always calm him down. Derek had a thought that maybe you were his anchor, but never asked Eli.
You stopped to see if you could find him when Charlie, one of your guy friends, walked over to you
"Hey, Y/n! Whatcha doing" He said
Not wanting to be rude you turned around to him with a fake smile. You didn't not like him but he flirted with you when he knew you had a boyfriend and that made you mad.
"Oh just looking for my boyfriend'' You sadi, putting an emphis on the boyfriend part
"Oh yeah, that Hale kid" He said as if he didn't know who he was
"That Hale kid has a name and it's Eli. Did you need something Charlie, cause I really need to find him. Not to be rude, but you are kinda in my way of doing that" You said
''Oh yeah yeah, sorry 'bout that. If you and Eli ever break up though, you know who to call babe" He said witha smirk and walked off. You scoffed and went back to trying to find Eli. Little did you know he was right around the corner listening to everything. Normally he wouldn't get so jealous, but he was losing control, and the one person that keeps him in control is the reason he's fuming.
Eli walks to his dad's car and gets in. Derek trys to talk but Eli just huffs back something. As Eli gets out of Derek's car his phone started to buzz. He looked at it and saw it was a message from you asking if he needed you to help him through the full moon. As much as he wanted you to help him through it, he was going to be stubborn so he said no. You wondered why he said no because he always wants you to help him through it, but you decided to let it go.
——time skip to Eli losing control——
Derek had decided to call you knowing you'd be able to calm Eli down. As soon as Derek asked, you didn't waste any time making your way to your boyfriend's house.
Once you got there you heard Eli's roars. You ran into the room you heard them and kneeled in-front of him. You nodded at Derek to leave. He was reluctant but did anyway.
"Eli, listen to me. You have to control it. Look in my eyes and breathe with me" you said soothingly. Eli looked into your eyes and started to breathe with you. When he finally gained control he collapsed into you lap as you ran your fingers through his hair, another trick you use to calm him down.
"I'm sorry I was so jealous'' He said leaving you confused
"Jealous? About what?'' You asked
"I saw Charlie flirting with you and I got mad, so I just left and didn't even talk to you. I was being a bitch and I'm sorry. Also I made you have to walk all the way over here'' Eli explained guiltily
"Eli, it's okay. And of course I would walk here, I would do anything to help you" you said still running your fingers through his hair. You placed a general kiss on his forehead but got startled when Derek walked into the room
"I was watching from the doorway, Y/n, you are Eli's anchor. For some an anchor is anger or sadness but for others it's someone they love. Eli you love Y/n and she is the only person who can calm you down"  Derek explained. He gave a general smile and walked out of the room
"Well, I'm honored, damn Eli Hale loves me and I'm his anchor wow" you said in a joking manor
Eli rolled his eyes and mumble come here. You guys shared a live filled kiss and ended the night with a cringey rom com
I hope y'all liked this one.

If i were a peeper.
"Would you take me to your planet..?"
"No." Ryley replied far too quickly for her to assume he had even considered her inquiry, perhaps he already contemplated such delusions..?
This mindset amused the old leviathan, she had seen many creatures but nothing as perplexing as her little brooding companion.
"Why not..?" Emphi inquired belligerently, her tenticle coiling around his waist and dragging her small companion away from the useless rocks he was picking at and back to her nest.
Watching him carefully place his head against the warm chiatin of her offspring ingited a heavy sense of …something she didn't quite understand.
There her brood flourished, an accomplishment, a future she had shown the small human multiple times but an accomplishment he never failed to praise her for.
Ego and proud were still vary new concepts to her, her captors had never akwnowlaged her triumphs with such indulgent reponse, no matter how much effort was expended in her pursuits they remained indifferent, the leviathan could hardly fend off such immature yet carnal impulses and yet…
He did not resent her eagerness, was this what acceptance felt like..?
Was it fair to indulge in such pleasantries when she had so little to offer? Why did he linger..? She had little else to offer once her offspring hatched, Even now the scent of death clug to him, a sweet but revenous smell the silicone of his second skin could not hide.
"Because humans can be cruel, you were trapped in here becuase they wanted the cure from you, with hunans…they'd cage you up simply because they could..itd never be safe for you…even if you were a peeper."
"But you are not in a cage…"
"Haha…it may not look like it, but yeah i am too, its just a long leash, one that'll be yanked taunt when i return home.."
Then why not stay here..? An incredulous and impulsive thought, this place was not his home like it was to her, there was nothing here for him…why would he stay vigile in a world that stripped him of everything..?
Because she wanted him to..?

It's funny because I see a lot of people talk about citizen sleeper as if the Sleeper was the normalest person ever, and not as if the company they've escaped sent their deadliest mercenary after them, and within three cycles of being in the Eye they weren't tangled in three different political schemes at the top level + tracked by a rogue killing AI most people aren't even aware of ?? "You're just a normal guy trying to survive" I've repaired a merc ship, created a restaurant, did industrial spy shit, am sent to spy on the head of the Mafia, will grow two novel species of mushrooms ??? Compare to Lem who just. Works on the ship bay. Emphis who serves food ? Like cmon

(My Time With) Citizen Sleeper
So I recently got Xbox Game Pass For PC, I still don't know how I feel about the increasing amounts of subscription-services, but that's a conversation for another post.
Point is, I have access to a bunch more games now and one of those is
Citizen Sleeper.
I choose my body. I go with the 'extractor' class, they look strong. I enjoy playing the strong, quiet types. Slow to warm, but once warmed fast to love. Fiercely, quietly loyal. I am a Sleeper, a robotic frame housing the emulation of a human mind that willingly signed up for transference. I am owned by a corporation.
I am escaping, wedged tight in the spaces of a freight ship that no being should occupy.
The first person I meet is a kind old man who works the scrapyard. Heavily augmented and handy with all manner of tools. The first description I'm given of myself, once free of the freight ship, is being huddled under a mylar blanket. I choose to be quiet when I first meet people, let them talk before I decide if I like them. I find most people likeable.
I work the yard to help the old man pay off his debt and he promptly kicks me out in a way that suggests he's doing me a favour. I'm told that I have tracking devices all over my body - that eventually the corporation that owns me will be coming to collect. A pushy individual named Feng claims they can help with that, but they also insist on having me do all their chores first.
I don't like Feng. They presume so immediately that I find important what they find important, the presume I will be helping them, they dangle the idea of freeing me from my tracking to keep me playing along. Their plans are poorly explained and obtuse, it takes me a long time to follow any of them.
I meet Lem and Mina at the dockyards. Lem is a single-dad, Mina is an only child. She's adopted, sort-of. A rescue, more accurately. Lem is a good guy, he's working (like me) on the massive colony ship being constructed on Erlin's Eye - that's where I am, by the way, the Eye. A lawless space-station where a person can easily vanish (like Feng, after getting me into trouble with corporate security). Lem tells me that if you work hard enough you'll be put onto a contracted team, and if you get put onto a contracted team you will have a chance to win a ticket on-board the ship. Someone has to maintain it while the wealthy are in cryo-sleep, and while he might not out-live the decades-long journey, his daughter would. A new life off-world far away from the reach of the core worlds and their hyper-capitalism.
I get on the contracted team, and then I help Lem get on by babysitting his daughter between my own shifts. Once the ship is complete, we'll find out if we made the cut.
It takes a while to build the ship. Long enough for a bounty hunter to catch up with me. Feng never did come back to get the tracking devices out of my systems, they left a clue as to where they went but I've no idea where it leads. Not following it leads to Ethan, the bounty hunter, and a gun to my head. He decides not to retire me then and there, but to instead enjoy the luxuries that the Eye has to offer - drinking - with me paying his tab.
Ethan objectifies me. He reminds me that I am corporate property, a machine taking itself for a joyride. He hates me, but he likes drinking more. There is a scene where he mocks me in front of the whole bar and only one person tells him to shut up. I think if I make friends with the people on the Eye that when push comes to shove, I'll be protected.
I make friends with a man named Emphis. He cooks some great mushroom dishes and trades them for a story or for credits. I tell him of memories I'm not meant to have. I tell him about my dreams. He tells me where I can grow some 'shrooms. The greenways.
That is where I meet Eshe and Peake. There is a flotilla beyond a cordoned off zone that are trying to get onto the Eye. Refugees from something. Eshe is angry all the time, pushy about what needs to be done, insistent that she and Peake must break through the blockade to send the refugees supplies. Peake wants to help and I'm convinced, but their plan is complicated. They need to steal water, and food, and procure scrap metal, and then work out a way to distract the blockade, to bypass the security. There is a limited time window and I am expected to help at all parts of the plan, but my body is failing.
I need credits to purchase a stabilizer for my systems. I need credits to pay off Ethan's bar tab. Last time he saw me he made a dent in my face. Nobody liked that, he works at the bar now and has been cut off, but there is someone worse coming. Someone - he says - who is a professional. Maybe if I help him pay off his bar debt he will protect me.
A woman named Helene tells me that Eshe's plan won't work. That it will be fuel for the council to come down even harder on the refugees, refusing them basic aid. She wants me to convince Eshe and Peake to back off, and I agree. Not because I disagree with what Eshe wants, but because the plan won't work. I am one robot, trying to feed myself, repair myself, provide for the cause, pay off a debt, track down a man who promised me freedom.
I try to talk Peake and Eshe down, I am kicked out of their compound. Eshe goes through with the plan and she is captured. I try to tell Peake that I am sorry.
The professional arrives. Ethan dies. Then the new guy does too. This is the first time my character has ever killed anybody. That night I dream about his corpse and when I wake up I realize that I might just be free. The corporation that owns my body has cancelled all their contracts, something is happening back at the core worlds, and the Eye is no longer important. Or at least, I am no longer important.
I have time now. I work a steady shift, I pay for my stabilizers, I grow mushrooms for Emphis to make new dishes. I'm pressured to join a gang - I don't. I find a vending machine that needs my help. An advanced AI trapped in obsolete hardware. I've been seeing things - the network that holds all the systems together. I have the innate ability to interface and desencrypt. I am stalked by a Hunter, the same Hunter that forced my Vending Machine Friend into hiding.
I promise to help.
And then the colony ship is complete. I wait with Lem and Mina in the crowd to see if we've made it on-board and we find out that no one did. No one was ever going to. Lem is crushed, I'm more optimistic, I promise to find a way on-board.
Then something else happens. A great invisible wave hits the Eye and for a brief moment security protocols are dropped in the most derelict parts - the parts closest to the flotilla and the cordon. The corporation backs off, Eshe is released.
Eshe and Peake forgive me in their own way. They forgive me because they know the plan was foolish, but Eshe is a true believer and I've been made cynical and self-preserving. Peake wants to study the Flux (that's what everyone is calling the wave). Eshe wants to continue helping the flotilla. It's less illegal now, but it is spreading me thin. They presume I will help them and I think that is why they forgave me for backing out of the earlier plan: I am useful.
My time is spent helping the Vending Machine. Studying the Colony Ship for security flaws. Listening to Peake talk at me about the Flux and what it could mean.
I've met also a mercenary, it was a complicated relationship that also ended in death. I've seen three bodies while aboard the Eye. Four if I count a Sleeper like myself. The mercenary was sorry for how things turned out, I think maybe if I made different choices it would not have gone so badly.
I do well for myself. I earn enough credits to sustain my body at peak performance. Emphis tells me his story and I thank him for it and the dish he prepared. I locate Feng, working in a tea shop, and he asks even more favours of me. I think he's forgotten he ever promised to remove my corporate tracking. I build a new housing for the Vending Machine friend and they are free of the obsolete machinery.
Together we isolate the Hunter protocol.
Then a man approaches me about the colony ship. If I help him he can get tickets for myself, and Lem, and Mina. The catch is that I am to be his beacon, he doesn't like the secrecy of the corporation that controls the ship. Information should be free. I'm given little choice, I want to help Lem, and I want to perform tasks when they are given.
I do as he asks, and he delivers on his promise. In 12 or so cycles the ship departs.
It's strange to be killing time in a space where just a few cycles ago I was struggling to keep my head above the water. I have a new name for the Vending Machine, Navigator. An AI protocol that escaped its pre-programmed bounds. I decide to use the time remaining until departure to help her escape the Hunter and Killer protocols.
I succeed with just one cycle left and then it is time to depart.
I think in the back of my mind that this might not be it, so many times the rug has been pulled from under me. Feng went into hiding, Sabine - someone I have not yet mentioned - similarly vanishing after promising to help. Eshe and Peake's doomed plans. Ethan and his gun.
I'm given the option to wait at the gates or give my boarding pass and I thought I'd hesitate more than I do. I board the ship.
There's a lot I had unfinished, probably. I never do find out what happens with the Flux. I never get the tracking software out of my systems. Feng waits for me in his teashop to provide intel he's never going to get. Navigator is free to explore the Eye as she pleases. The refugees continue their struggle.
I think the Eye is a place where all this happens and you slip into it and then slip out of it again, and I think I am lucky to slip out into a life with a man I can call a friend and a little girl I'll eventually call a daughter.
For decades we work a ship full of cryo-sleepers. Lem passes before me, Mina tells me the news. Then years later I start to fade too. Mina shuts me down for the last time, promising that I will wake up again.
Tumblr media
This is a really special game. I wasn't expecting the ending to gut punch me the way that it did. I'm not motivated to replay it because the more I think of my story the less I want to change it. There is so much I didn't learn, so much I neglected. But for me and the character I embodied? I found what was important. In that space between departure and arrival, those decades, I was free.

okay Citizen Sleeper is a lot but I do really like it
ALSO
I feel very called about, after finishing In Other Waters and checking the other games by that dev, seeing Emphis in the promos and going “You. Husband.“
And then THE VERY FIRST QUEST that you get when you meet Emphis is “Get Closer To Emphis“
