Maybe it's a 'study finds water is wet' type of thought, but
considering it's an action movie whose overall plot is "immortal warriors Fuck Shit Up™️", I think it's significant that in The Old Guard the thing that makes Copley pull red strings through his Murder Conspiracy Board and say "[Merrick] doesn't care what [Andy]'s done with [her immortality]" is the people they save, not the ones they kill
Most of the Conspiracy Board is him circling random newspaper headlines and faces on old photographs to (more or less realistically) follow the immortals' treck through the world and big historical events. Which is, in-canon, not much different than putting portraits from different centuries next to a picture of Keanu Reeves and saying "they look the same, clearly Reeves is an immortal!"
But then there are the connections. A little girl holding Joe's hand in WW1 becoming the youngest (and first) woman to be awarded a Nobel Prize for Medicine (suck it, Kozak). Or the grandchild of a family that Andy saved from [something] helping people escape from the Khmer Rouge genocide in Cambodia.
They are warriors. They have fought and been in the midst of countless wars, major or minor, throughout history. They must have killed as many people as they saved... and yet.
It's not them taking out a random warlord or dictator or rabidly hateful politician that has tangible repercussions in history. It's the children and families they get out of war zones, save from accidents, protect from natural disasters. People to whom they give a second chance at life, and grow to change the world (or even just their own world), like a mysterious stranger once changed theirs just by holding out a hand or patching a wound.
I don't know I just think it's particularly neat

it was inevitable as the tides, but it has come to my attention now that if i talk about how sexy Thrax was without specifying "thrax from cinematic masterpiece Osmosis Jones released in 2001" a lot of people get really confused bc they don't know who that is bc they're officially a generation removed from me at this point
rather than go "ugh kids these days" (like cmon don't be That Guy) or "ugh no i feel old" (I don't! guess I'm built different) i will ever so happily inform so a whole new batch of people can enjoy a something very unique and special to my heart that kicks fucking ass and hope they enjoy it too
and that a something is Osmosis Jones. especially the villain of Osmosis Jones. his name his Thrax. he is an lethal virus that is never fully identified (it's implied he is the Red Death, from the Edgar Allen Poe story, but real); other viruses don't recognize him, and he's so reliably stealthy and lethal he possibly hasn't even been properly discovered by science yet. he also only gets more lethal and dangerous as he infects new people, treating how fast he can kill his current host with fever as a PR he has to beat every time until he can cook your brain to death SO quickly after infection that he will go down in history as the single most dangerous illness known to humans.
so yeah take a look and appreciate what set the bar for my villainfucker sleeper code. they don't make em quite like this anymore. content warning for bright orange body horror. legit plays out like a scene in a horror movie.

the sonic fandubs mean everything to me
[id: a four-part comic with sonic and shadow:
in the first two parts, they're drawn in color in halfbody shots. shadow is solemnly gazing at the green chaos emerald that he has floating in his hands, his ears pinned back. sonic is looking upward at something, shading his eyes. he brightly says, "Shadow, Shadow you're an asshole man."
closing his eyes and gesturing with one hand, Shadow casually replies, "You are what you eat, Sonic." sonic stares at him blankly, taken off guard.
in the last two parts, the view is pulled back to see them as fullbodies shots, and they're single-colored (shadow red, sonic blue) and in a more basic stick figure art style. "What the- what the hell man? oh my god," sonic exclaims, surprised, while shadow just kind of looks at him.
then sonic leans forward a little, points at him, and cheekily says, "that was kinda sick!" with an awkward laugh, shadow puts a hand on a hip and replies, "thanks I worked hard on it." end id]

OP HOW ARE WE FEELING....... THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS ALL AROUND...... genuinely distraught... someone take dcmk away from gosho fr...
sorry anon the tone of this ask are not specifically directed to you, its more to the general KS posts i've been seeing on my fyp
don't plan to address this since im not even a KS account but i'm starting to get peeved seeing a bunch of ppl act victimized like gosho did that cuz he personally hates KS shippers
i'm a huge gosho aoyama hater myself but come on that man probably thinks there's nothing wrong with first cousin dating in the first place (addendum one: shuake, addendum two: hanzawa love interest being his own countryside cousin) i'd even dare to say based on his unintentional world view its him encouraging KS shippers instead
for this account i'll make sure to tag any future KS to avoid icking those bothered by the reveal but for the record any KS made by me are not closely related

Gee John, How Come Your Dad Lets You Watch Three Movies?!
Alright. I suffered through THREE of John's movies today, and all of them were extremely bad. All three of them had terrible dialogue and boring characterization, Face/Off was mostly gunfights, Armageddon was mostly explosions, and Ghost Dad was mostly an absolute fever dream clearly signed off by a very drugged up executive.
However, I do see why John likes these movies. John is a Nic Cage fan, and I do think both Cage and Travolta gave great performances in Face/Off. The weird, experimental science aspect is fun too, and might have a link to John's chumhandle - I can see him getting curious about how the facial transplant surgery works. Mistaken identity is an interesting theme - John feels like his dad doesn't know him well, thinking he'd like harlequin dolls and cakes, and might think his dad sees him as a different person. People on Discord have theorized that John's arc will be realizing she's transgender, which is REALLY interesting in light of this movie and its focus on physical features vs actual identity.
Armageddon has the same basic premise as Deep Impact - a meteor will destroy the Earth if the American government can't figure out a way to stop it - but on a much shorter timeframe. I personally think Deep Impact is miles better, but Armageddon is very focused on American masculinity and a motley crew of men who live dangerous, somewhat criminal lives (it's more similar to Con Air in this regard). We know John likes a Cool Movie Moment (see p.20) and this one is basically fifty lab-grown Cool Movie Moments stitched together.
Both these movies are very long and very action packed. Armageddon barely takes time away from the action to give us the characters' names, and since John probably watches movies for escapism, this must be appealing to him. Their major characters have very exciting lives, whether that's working for the FBI, as a terrorist, as a deep sea oil driller or as an astronaut - John probably isn't concerned with the politics of these things, they're simply cooler kinds of people who he could grow up to be, and it's fun to imagine himself in their place because it beats his current life.
Ghost Dad is completely irredeemable. [ooc 2024 note: I don't endorse watching movies that feature Bill Cosby, who is a known terrible guy, and I can guarantee he did not receive any money from my watching this.] It's horrifically written and plotted and none of the humor lands. But, it makes perfect sense that John and his dad would watch this, as it's about a family who pranks each other. The son is an aspiring magician just like John (and is similarly bad at it), and John might even have got his interest in magic from watching this.
The dad spraying whipped cream on a top hat is very Dad Egbert-coded, and John might love the idea of having a ghost in his house who can pilot clothes around while invisible and float up to windows to scare mean kids. Meanwhile, Dad clearly likes to show John movies that feature parents eventually choosing their kids over their career. (It seems like he shows this with his actions, too - he's clearly not at work today, and John's feeling suffocated in the house suggests that Dad is there most of the time).
MOVIES WATCHED: 10/11
MOST RECENT MOVIES:
Face/Off (1997) - Rating 4/10
Armageddon (1998) - Rating 3/10
Ghost Dad (1990) - Rating 1/10

It's been more than 20 years and for some reason I feel that Gosho hasn't given Kaiao any development, how can more than 20 years pass and Aoko dynamics, relationship and feelings remain the same? At this point I feel like Gosho is just going to make them date because "they already liked each other" they remain in the same status quo
Hey, if we go by DC romance progress, they've been going too fast. We've already had suspicion of identity chapters, and that didn't happen until more than 400 chapters in DC. /j
Since heists have taken over any character development recently, I don't even know if Kaito and Aoko will even get any romantic progress. Maybe the actual identity confrontation will happen down the line, since that's thief drama, but atm, it really wouldn't surprise me if they only ask each other on a real date at the very end of the manga.
Like. I'm sure Gosho would love to make MK a love drama as well, but he writes MK so rarely, and usually as hype for something Kid related in other media. So the MK stories tend to be heavy on drama that can only take place at Kid heists. (To the point that the new chapters just. Use Kid as the plot device to show off a new character. Even Hakuba's never gotten so much 'look at this character being a detective' treatment in MK.)
-sighs- I just feel bad for MK as a series at this point. I like the characters, I like the general story idea, but. It's been going down a very steep hill with Gosho wanting things exciting, but not wanting any real progress in. Anything. But unlike old MK, the new stories aren't even nice standalone setpieces of story, they're... mundane. They could be high stakes, if you purely look at the scenarios on paper, but. We all know nothing's gonna happen to Kid. Nothing even happens to him when the actual bad guys show up, much less one-time antagonists.
We need actual character focus and development, not heist drama. Badly. Not even romance, though that'd be a nice change. Just any character expansion of our limited cast of characters. Gosho wants big, all the time, meaningless big stuff, when small would be so nice.
#And also he probably won't care to expand on KaiAo when he knows it's already canon#Like; not in the same way that ShinRan is canon endgame and he just needed to write it out#But in a 'I said these two were dating in another manga; they will exist even if I haven't written it'#And his story atm does feel like it could be left off with an ambiguous note on if they're together or not#And then just leave them dating in Yaiba for people who care about confirmation#MK is not in a stable enough state; I really don't know what he's planning with anything#And it's been so. -gestures to all the 'meaningless big stuff'- lately#I don't know if it'll ever get any shift in focus in the future#We barely get anything; all we have now is a new character people are divided about#And the tiniest continuity of Aoko thinking to herself that Kid is teasing her by reminding her of Kaito#Like; part of the problem is continuity as well; at least if Gosho wants to stick with DC-ish MK#MK has all the potential for callbacks or returning characters that could be interesting#But none of the potential that fans enjoy is ever /used/#We got all our KaiAo up front. We have suspicion arcs where it's barely mentioned that Kaito's proven his innocence in the past#They could go back to the amusement park and Aoko could mention the movie and Kaito can be sweating#Because he never saw the movie; that's then he peaced out to go heisting#There's so much. Gosho's good at adding potential to his story#But everything he comes up with to make canon ends up disappointing because he never fully uses any of it#He just adds more and more elements that go nowhere#MK is a mess that gets more and more fun to play around in; but the actual chapters are. Bad#Which might be for a reason similar to DC of we wait so long and get something extremely meh#Except instead of the months between DC cases; it's years for MK; and DC fans complain the entire time#So when MK fans are fed crumbs of... anything. It's just not as enjoyable as new content should be#(I got rambly in tags; sorry ;._. )

Happy Queer Media Monday!
Today: Happiest Season (2020)
Look. If I don’t talk about this movie now, then I never will.
Tumblr media
(Abby and Harper on their Christmas light viewing date, before The Plot really starts.)
Happiest Season is a 2020 lesbian Christmas movie notable for its famous cast. The story follows Abby and Harper, a perfectly happy couple, whose relationship is tested when they visit Harper’s family over the holidays. What Harper didn’t tell Abby until they get there: She isn’t out to her family, and is asking Abby to stay closeted, too, and pretend that they are only random roommates. Family drama ensues.
The movie was received very well when it came out. However, for once, I would like to add my own experience watching it, because I feel it might be useful:
I didn’t like it. It didn’t make me feel good. I was going through some serious conflict with my own family, and this movie kind of amplified that pain. Of course, that was me and my private life, but I had been promised a light-hearted comedy, only to be hit over the head with a rather serious story about families and their lack of acceptance. So my advice would be: DON’T EXPECT A COMEDY. It’s not escapism. If you approach this movie as a serious drama, then it is 1) really well-made and generally a good watch, and 2) has actual interesting things to say about the queer experience.
Queer Media Monday is an action I started to talk about some important and/or interesting parts of our queer heritage, that people, especially young people who are only just beginning to discover the wealth of stories out there, should be aware of. Please feel free to join in on the fun and make your own posts about things you personally find important!

the way i rewatch any part of rottmnt and once again come away from canon leo wondering where the actual heck are people getting this “oohhhh he only thinks he’s good for self sacrifice or as a tool, he has absolutely zero self worth whatsoever” instead of the canon version who’s kind of a manipulative lil stinker and KNOWS he has stuff to bring to the table but isn’t sure how to be Seen
it’s not that he thinks he’s worthless or not wanted. i fuckin promise you that about rise leo. he does not seriously think he is unloved or unwanted or ~one mistake away from being dropped by his own family~ or whatever
what he IS is rejection-sensitive in the way that makes any time he fails feel like the end of the world to HIM (setting aside that time he messed up and it did literally trigger the near-apocalypse and near deaths of him and his family lol), so he’d rather not try than risk messing up
