Music is one of my favorite things in this world. Whenever I'm feeling sad, happy, heartbroken, or whatever I feel, music magnifies those emotions. Music is what feelings sound like to me. If there's anything in this world that can understand me the best, it's music. If you ask me what genre I'm into, my music taste is actually very broad. I like Western, K-pop, J-pop, Thai music, indie, and a lot of different genres, but for me, nothing beats OPM songs. OPM songs have the ability to get you right in the feels, that hugot moment, regardless of the memories you have while listening to them. The lyrics of OPM songs are what elevate their beauty. Filipino, our language, is very poetic. Napaka ganda ng wika nating mga pilipino. Our language is poetic and beautiful in every word. That's what makes OPM songs so different and beautiful. The lyrics of the songs always speak about your unexplainable feelings. For some reason, OPM songs always find the right word to describe our feelings or the right words to say to a person. For today's blog, I would like to talk to you about some of my favorite OPM songs and my interpretations of them.
Tumblr media
CTTO: Cup of Joe
youtube
Let's start off with one of the most underrated band that I know and my all-time favorite, Cup of Joe's Estranghero. Have you ever fallen in love with someone who gives you a lot of mixed signals? Yung mapapa "should I give up or should I just keep chasing pavements" ka nalang haha. Or have you ever been in a situation where you thought you knew someone but you didn't? Yung tipong mapapa "you're not the same person i fell in love with." Oh pak forda teleserye yarn haha. If these two situations resonate with you or if you ever went through these kinds of situations, this song is perfect for you. Because this song talks about loving someone despite the confusion and uncertainties. Now, what I love about this song is how it was composed. I love the story-telling in this song. It starts off with the question:
"Ako ay litong-lito
Saan ba ito patungo
'Di ko na alam kung dapat bang ihinto
'Di alam ang sasabihin
'Di alam ang aking gagawin
Kung mananatili sa 'yo
Minamahal kong estranghero"
And ends off with the answer:
"Kahit na litong-lito
Sa iyo pa rin tutungo
'Di man sigurado, 'di pa rin hihinto
Isa lang ang sasabihin
Isa lang ang aking gagawin
Muli kitang kikilalanin
Minamahal kong estranghero"
This song made me realize two things. First, the lyrics
"Kahit na litong-lito
Sa iyo pa rin tutungo.
'Di man sigurado, 'di pa rin hihinto"
The song tells us that no matter how many mixed signals a person gives you, you'll continue loving them either way. Confusion and uncertainties can't stop you from loving them.
The second one is from the last line which is
"Muli kitang kikilalanin, minamahal kong estranghero"
We always loved that person at their best, but loving them on the opposite side of the spectrum is a different matter. There will be times when the people we love aren't the same people we thought they were. Even when the situation changes and we are unable to recognize someone, after everything else, they will always be the person we love. The lyrics tells us that its okay, change if you must, I will get to know you again if I have to.
youtube
Another song by them that you should listen to, and is also one of my favorites, is Sagada. This song is about a love that has ended and needs to be forgotten. This song is inspired by the movie "That Thing Called Tadhana," where Sagada becomes famous as a destination for the heartbroken who want to vent their feelings.
Tumblr media
CTTO: Up Dharma Down
youtube
Speaking of that movie and Sagada, I'm once again reminded of that particular song, Up Dharma Down's Tadhana. If you're on a road trip going to Sagada from Baguio, Tadhana must be on your playlist. Fun fact! This song was actually written in baguio. That means this song is really made for baguio haha. This song actually helped me confess to someone. I found it difficult to express my feelings at that time. It was the first time I experienced falling in love, and it was incredibly overwhelming. I usually do a great job of controlling my emotions when I like someone. However, at the moment, it was just an overwhelming feeling and I couldn't control it unless I let it out. But as many of us feel when we're confessing to someone, a lot of what-ifs come into our heads. We all know that confessing our feelings to someone is scary. A lot of people, including myself, are afraid of rejection. So when I heard the lyrics of the song and finally understood them, I realized that they actually resonated with my current situation.
"Ba't 'di pa sabihin
Ang hindi mo maamin
Ipa-uubaya na lang ba 'to sa hangin
Huwag mong ikatakot
Ang bulong ng damdamin mo"
It's either take a risk or lose a chance. Wag mong hayaan na tangayin ito ng hangin papalayo sa iyo. We fall in love by chance, so don't be afraid; just allow yourself to experience the sensation of falling in love. Why would you try to stop the inevitable? If you're afraid of getting hurt, it's okay. That's part of love. You'll only know that you love someone if it hurts. At the end of the day, at least you won't regret anything. At least you tried. Kesa naman mapuno ako ng what-ifs diba.
Tumblr media
CTTO: Coeli
youtube
Now, if you're looking for a good confession song, Nabibighani by Coeli is the perfect song for you. This song is one of the most beautifully composed songs I have ever heard. This song is about the art of falling in love and the endless, unfathomable joy you get while you're with your special someone. If you want a pure and heartfelt song to use to confess to your person, no doubt this is the song you're looking for.
"Kay laki ng mundo at bigla ito'y lumiliit
Natira na lang ikaw, ako, at ang buong daigdig
Mga planeta at bituin, nakisayaw sa ating damdamin
Ako'y nalunod sa iyong tingin
Ako'y nabibighani"
Oh, how I wish I had someone special to dance to this song with. Anyway, we are now down to our last song. As much as I want to talk about many songs with you all, my blog is getting longer na and ubos na english ko haha.
Tumblr media
CTTO: Ben&Ben
youtube
If you wanna talk about pure and hearfelt songs, aba hindi magpapahuli diyan ang Ben&Ben and their most iconic love song, Araw-araw. Actually, this song is the definition of love for me. Because I believe that if you truly love someone, you will choose them regardless of the obstacles and difficulties that are thrown in your path, despite their imperfections and flaws. Without a pause, without a doubt, in a heartbeat. You'll keep choosing them. Hindi ako na niniwala sa mga kasabihang "kung para sayo, para sayo talaga" or "if its meant to be it'll find a way". Ano kapag taliwas na ang tadhana sa inyo susuko na kayo? Kapag hindi na sang-ayon ang mundo isasabat nyo "maybe we're not made for each other"? Haha. I believe we are only fated to do the things that we'd choose. Yes, we fall in love by chance, but we stay in love by choice. Just like how Daoming Si and Shancai, the lead pair in the enduringly popular Asian drama, chose to be together in spite of the obstacles and hardships their mother places on their path. Even if the universe was against their love, pinili pa rin nila ang isa't-isa at ipinaglaban ang pagmamahalan nila. Or how Dos waited for his Seiiki for 17 years despite the uncertainties. 17 years of choosing Seikki kahit walang kasiguraduhan. Nag wo-work lang ang isang bagay kung pipiliin mong ipagpalaban at ipagpatuloy ito. That is why I really love the lyrics of the song.
"Mahiwaga
Pipiliin ka sa araw-araw"
Love is not all about rainbows and sunshine. There will come a time when your love for someone will be tested. Love and pain exist together. When you choose to stay with them despite all the challenges and hardships, that's when you'll know if your love for them is true and genuine.
Tumblr media
So that's it. This is the end of our blog. I hope that because of this blog, OPM has become interesting to you and I hope that it will help you enjoy our own music even more. Philippines to let "Barbie" movie into theaters, but wants lines blurred on a "child-like" map
Tumblr media
Manila — Philippine censors said Wednesday they have allowed the "Barbie" movie to be shown in cinemas, after asking its Hollywood distributor to blur lines on a brightly-colored world map drawing allegedly showing China's claims to the disputed South China Sea. The fantasy comedy film about the famous doll, directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, is set to open in the Southeast Asian nation on July 19. After reviewing the film twice and consulting foreign affairs officials and legal experts, the government's Movie and Television Review and Classification Board said it would allow it to be screened.
The South China Sea and the nine-dash line
The censors began examining "Barbie" last week after Vietnam reportedly banned the film over scenes featuring a map showing the so-called nine-dash line, which China uses to justify its maritime claims. Beijing claims almost the entire South China Sea, despite rival claims from other Southeast Asian countries including the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. In April, China accused the U.S. of "endangering regional peace" by signing a new deal with the Philippines that will see four additional bases in the country used by U.S. troops, including one near the disputed South China Sea and another not far from Taiwan.Long-time treaty allies Manila and Washington agreed in February to expand cooperation in "strategic areas" of the Philippines as they seek to counter Beijing's growing assertiveness over self-governed Taiwan and China's construction of bases in the South China Sea.
A concession for Barbie's "cartoonish map"
After "meticulous" scrutiny of the film, Philippine censors were convinced that the "cartoonish map" did not depict the nine-dash line."Instead, the map portrayed the route of the make-believe journey of Barbie from Barbie Land to the 'real world,' as an integral part of the story," the censorship board said in a statement. Actor Margot Robbie is photographed during a photocall for the upcoming Warner Bros film "Barbie" in Los Angeles, June 25, 2023. MIKE BLAKE/REUTERS "Rest assured that the Board has exhausted all possible resources in arriving at this decision as we have not hesitated in the past to sanction filmmakers/ producers/ distributors for exhibiting the fictitious 'nine-dash line' in their materials." In a separate letter to Philippine Senator Francis Tolentino, who had criticized the film for "violating Filipino fisherfolks' rights," the censors said they had asked Hollywood studio Warner Bros to "blur" the controversial lines on the map. Dashed lines drawn in a "child-like manner" appeared in several locations on the map around land masses identified as Europe, North America, South America, Africa and Asia, the censors said. But it found only eight dashes around the landmass labelled "Asia." "Moreover, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia are not visible on the map," the board said in the letter dated July 11 and shared with reporters. "This is in stark contrast to the maps found in the banned films 'Abominable (2019)' and 'Uncharted (2022)'," it said. The Department of Foreign Affairs said it appreciated the opportunity to watch "Barbie" to "ascertain if the depiction of the imaginary world map is inimical to the national interest." Warner Bros did not immediately respond to AFP's request for comment, but a Warner Bros spokesperson was quoted by Variety as saying the map was a "child-like crayon drawing" and "not intended to make any type of statement." The Philippines' approval of "Barbie" coincided with the seventh anniversary of an international ruling that China's historical claims to the South China Sea have no legal basis. Filipinos do take loveteams seriously. I think in every generation there's a prominent loveteam that fans would fight for. In 2015, there was a loveteam that started on a noontime show (Filos here would now this.haha.). the premise is it's an unscripted segment, and we get to see their love story progress on tv. they got so big that they had the guinness world record for most tweets in a day. this would later on be surpassed by bts. they would go on a few "dates", their families would hype them up on social media, but they didnt get together as a couple. I doubt if they were even friends.haha. when someone else courted the girl, this other guy was really crucified on social media.they dated but the loyal fans still held on to the original pair, believing they have kids that they are hiding or when the guy goes live apparently you would see baby clothes/toys in the background. haha. the girl even had to send dms to certain fans saying they are not a couple but the fans thought they were just talking to a social media manager. now the girl's engaged but some fans still won't let go.I imagine it would be total chaos if one day the bts maknae line reveal their partners
The tweets record, oh wow.
I had an idea that the couples were famous, that it was a show people liked a lot but I didn't know so much.
"the girl even had to send dms to certain fans saying they are not a couple but the fans thought they were just talking to a social media manager."
No waaaaaaaay.
It really is pretty much what I mean when I say that ships are usually, for the most part, a projection of personal romantic ideals. The first couple, the one that was going during the show was probably the perfect love story for the shippers. It does not matter that it was fake. Some of those shippers probably knew that it was fake. Even if it was fake, it was still perfect for them.
I don't know if it's related but I've said before how BTS relationships are all real precisely because they're not perfect. They all have flaws and they all have moments that we're watching and thinking "damn why did they treat him like that". But that's what real life is. Sometimes you just mess up. I would actually be less trusting of something that looks perfect, because perfect social interactions rarely are genuine.
Back to the topic, I actually think "phenomenons" like that are quite common, even if they don't reach such heights, even if the shippers don't become so delusional. I'm thinking of Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, for example. I'm not sure if Gaga was single or not at the time but Bradley Cooper was married when he worked with Gaga, and people shipped them and magazines and media outlets talked about their chemistry and actually wondered if there was more going on. That was a ship even though, at least Bradley, actually had a wife.
There was Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, too. Both married, yet still people were hooked on their little "romantic" anthics that they used to promote their movie. They had great chemistry together, looked very good together, and they knew how to make use of that favorable situation. People shipped too even while knowing perfectly well that there was nothing real there except friendship and that they were both married to other people.
Illusion sells. It sells a lot and it's a well that hardly ever runs dry. You don't even need to do much to keep it going because the fans/shippers will keep it going no matter what.
Larries are still a thing even if Harry and Louis haven't publicly acknowledged each other for a decade. It's the shippers that are still carrying that torch.
Last year I said that even if Taehyung and Jennie confirm to be dating each other, or there are more undeniable proof of them as a couple, that still wouldn't be a reason to stop people from shipping taekook. Because taekook is ideal for tkers, the same way vmin is ideal for vminers. It really is not about what's real or not but what does look real TO YOU, and what can you personally understand, what can you emotionally get involved with and what type of relationship dynamics you can sympathize with.
Two photos of taennie could definitely plant a seed of doubt, but in the end what you know is taekook (let's say you're a taekooker). You know how Jungkook and Taehyung talk to each other, you know how they hug, you've seen them sleeping in the same bed, cuddling, sharing food. On the other hand, you don't know anything about taennie. It's just two people taking a photo in a mirror.
So between supporting or believing in something you know vs something you don't know, I think the answer is quite clear. People will keep supporting what they've already decided looks real to them (in the case of the loveteam, it wasn't the second couple).
I don't know if you're a jikooker and if you are, I don't know how much you believe in them. But just to mention a similar example, it's how sometimes we joke about Jimin with his friends or Eunwoo, and everyone understands that it's a joke because kind of crazy because we don't really know anything about the way Jimin is with his friends. So what would make more sense to you, eunmin or jikook? Of course it's jikook.
Shipping is definitely a more widespread attitude and normalized in some countries more than others, too. Here, it's not really a thing and it's very looked down upon and ridiculed. Even straight couples. However, people love gossip. Masses won't be really interested in a love story but they will tune in for when the couple breaks up and there's drama.

Hope, Colors, and People: Woman for the Country
Lorence Lozano | Activity #7
Every 6 years, we are changing and electing new sets of leaders that will lead our country. Or sometimes, re-electing some of the past leaders we appointed. On that news, Leni Robredo, the current Vice President, is running for the presidency this time.
Leni Robredo is currently the Vice President of the Philippines, she is also an Economics degree holder from University of the Philippines (UP). Before she became the Vice President of the Philippines she was also a Congresswoman where in her first bill to be authored was the House Bill 19 also known as the Full Disclosure Policy Bill which ensures all the budgets used for the transactions made financially is fully disclosed to the public. In her time as the Vice President her office, known as the Office of the Vice President (OVP) was awarded by the Commission on Audit (COA) 3 times with the highest audit rating from 2019-2021. Robredo’s office also created a program called ‘Angat Buhay Lahat’ which aims to merge public and private sectors, organizations, to provide the needs for the marginalized sectors. As the election comes nearer, Vice President Robredo who is one of the presidential candidates, released her campaign ad that consist of her rallies, big artist supporting her, and her walking through with the people while having heart touching melody and lyrics for it’s background music. Aside from Robredo’s famous tagline “Gobyernong Tapat, Angat Buhay Lahat” which may not be seen on her campaign ad but her other tagline “Kulay Rosas Ang Bukas” was heard by the end of the campaign ad, a very famous and catchy line that really captures the smile and hope of the people for a brighter tomorrow. Aside from the famous tagline, Robredo’s campaign ad also shows influential artists like Iza Calzado, Angel Locsin, Nadine Lustre, and Piolo Pascual, endorsing or supporting her candidacy. A very strategic move as these artists have a big impact on the mass as they are very famous for their work such as movies and teleseryes that really captures the heart of the Filipino people. Robredo’s campaign ad also includes some of her platforms or programs for the Filipino people, another good point from the ad that will really have people searching and yearning to know more about her platforms and programs to be implemented. The logo shown at the end also is a very good point from the campaign ad, it is a flower consisting of the colors of pink, green, and the color of the philippine flag with the sun and star on it too. Represents the inclusivity and the aim to work for the country. Though the ad may have a lot of good points working on it, there is also a downside for it as it is not aired on the national television where a lot of people could see it, the campaign ad was only posted online via Facebook page of Vice President Leni Robredo. This is not a good point as not everyone is online, with more than 171 thousands different reactions and 4.4 million views online, it still does not guarantee the effectiveness. And the music may catch the attention of the people but some words mentioned and heard from the ad can be twisted, like “laylayan” and “kulay rosas” which are known and implied to be pink. The narrative from these words can be twisted into something harmful and evil. Hence, the campaign ad was very refreshing and new to the eyes, this campaign ad is not a work of just that but a work that shows its essence and message it wants to convey. It is not like the other campaign ad that has been criticized and known as the “mapagpanggap” but rather a pro-people campaign ad that really touches the heart of many people.

HELLO 👋 I WAS SENT HERE BY PALMETT-HOES. What are your thoughts on the foxes + tattoos?? Originally it was Neil + tattoos but if you have thoughts of the other foxes too I'd love to hear them if you want to share 🥺
Okay, so I actually might try to become a tattoo artist and love tattoo culture. I also have already about 30 tattoos, some the size of my whole hand and some the size of a quarter, a lot of mixed and matched stuff. I also always try to think of the foxes in their timeline, so 2006-2007 era, and when I think said foxes would get tattoos in their life and why.
NEIL
First off: I personally HC Neil has keloid scarring and a lot of scarring so tattooing is hard on his skin. I have a friend who has more scars than I've ever seen on anyone else IRL before and we both love tattoos but even with him trying to prep the artist, unless they were a scar micropigmentation expert, they usually underestimated how hard it was going to be to tattoo on his skin. It's uneven and dense and doesn’t hold ink well. His non-scarred skin faired a lot better but his skin was something artists just weren't prepared for. I might get some micropigmentation on some skin grafts I got to even out the coloring and make it look more “natural” but I’m waiting to see if the pigment will settle and heal more first.
I personally don't see Neil ever getting a tattoo, and this bums a lot of people out lmao. I think his scars are too thick and too raised and it's too cosmetic and aesthetic centric for it to be something on his radar. On his skin that isn't touched by scars I think he would want to leave as be mostly out of neutrality. I don't see Neil as the type of sentimental tattooer, I see him thinking “well if it matters to me I remember it” sort of and him wanting to keep the really deep stuff personal just for himself and even another person putting it on him is someone else there. I think if he were ever to get a tattoo, he would be like… idk it would be the kind that says “yes I got shot, stop asking” over a bullet hole scar or like that one guy whos missing his leg and above it there's a tattoo that says “one foot in the grave” that's the only type of tattoo I can see Neil doing and even still I'm not convinced he would do it.
ANDREW
I don't ever see Andrew covering up his scars with tattoos either. I think he likes how the armbands can come on and off and be fully covered to not at all. He's not ashamed of them but he's private, and I think the tattoos could seem like he's trying to hide them when he's not-it's just nobody's business. I think if he were to get anything it would be American-traditional, it ages well, its classic, and doesn't really go out of style. Before the…. Let's say 80s, there weren't the different tattoo “styles” like there are today. It was just… tattoos in America. There was Japanese-style tattooing and then American-style tattooing, and since tattooing started curating its underground culture in the ’50s in America… those circles did not blend. They do now, but they sure as hell didn't then. So I could see Andrew with American-traditional because it's classic and I could see it appealing to him, but I could also see Russian prison tattoo style black-work something that appeals to him too. Get him some gulag tats. However if he had those, and since I currently HC him as white and with a buzzed or grown-out messy buzzed head, he would deadass look like a fuckin skinhead so... yeah lmao. Overall I don't see Andrew getting tattoos really, but if he would, American-traditional seems fitting.
KEVIN
Okay, so Kevin out here looking like a MF SoundCloud rapper with his single face tat and nothing else going on. I know it might be OOC but since his mom is Irish and I HC his dad as Maori (even tho in the canon Wymack likely has 90s new age tribalism, which is a complicated issue but instead I choose culturally significant tattoos over the tattoo trend that was largely popularized by a movie lmao anyways-).
So I think Kevin is the only one who dives into tattoo culture and bonds over it with his dad. If he just has the chess piece, it still feels like a branding, like a mark so distinct against the rest of him, but one full sleeve of Celtic knots and symbols and the other arm full of Maori's distinct tattoos of swirls and symbols could be a cool way for him to reclaim his own skin and have it not be something he did just to cover something up, but make tattooing something connecting him to his cultures and family.
NICKY
Nicky is the guy who got like, fierce, or pride, or something like that tattooed if he got a tattoo. I see Nicky getting a pride tattoo of some kind maybe and it being calligraphy or like if Nicky/Erik is a bear then he gets a bear paw. I could also see him getting his and Erik’s wedding date tattooed somewhere. I also don't see him as the type who didn't know how much research and shit goes into finding the artist for you, and kinda assumes you can go to just anyone and just walk in and then was like “wait what” when he couldn’t (or couldn't if he wanted to get exactly what he had in mind) so he probably got/gets tattooed by some non-homophobic apprentice, maybe even that apprentices first tattoo, and also since Nicky is Mexican and darker-skinned I doubt he thinks to put on sunscreen and the sun makes his ink lines bleed and so it doesn't age the best (it be like that).
ALLISON
Got a trendy tramp stamp to like, really stick it to her parents. Right on her lower back I bet it's the classic 2000s swirls and a butterfly and some of those stars, idk what they're called. If she was a young 20-year-old now tho she totally would have gotten a fine line tattoo, like not a tight three, a real 1 needle tattoo. They were seen as really nice back then and “so Cali” and like I could see /maybe/ her getting it done before she's 30 but they were not that common yet and like micro-realism is so new we still kinda don't know how it's going to age at all since tattoos before it have been designed they way they have for aging. Again if she got a micro-realism/single needle tattoo tho it would be something kinda basic like a butterfly or like a lion. I swear I've seen the same google image lion tattooed on a lotta people and like IDC it's your skin. But yeah, she gets the classic 2000s swirl butterfly and stars tattoo above her crack one night, maybe after a really bad phone call with her parents and she got drunk and pissed off. Maybe someone said she couldn't take the pain. (which btw, tattoos don’t hurt as much as they make them out to be in shows and shit, they can hurt tho)
DAN
I HC Dan as very dark-skinned, she's 75% black and 25% Sioux and grew up in a very very white area when outside her home on the res. Tattoo culture is still really sexist and really colorist, and at this point in history I think if she ever did want a tattoo, she maybe asked vaguely about it and they flat out said “I don't know how to tattoo on black skin” or “it doesn't go with my art” which… are shithole excuses and I think she thought, “well fuck u too” and never thought about it much since then.
RENEE
I HC as Renee as darker-skinned than Dan, and like the only places she could possibly get tattooed are maybe her palms, the bottoms of her feet, or her inner mouth probably. Some people genuinely are so dark that tattooing is hard, because it's based on the concept of black ink on a lighter surface, which is why scarification catches on in cultures where the skin is too dark to pigment with ink effectively. However, the idea of fuckin, 15-year-old Renee who is still Natalie with “PU$$Y” tattooed in her mouth kinda sends me. I think lil kid Renee thought she was gangster, and tbh she was, and I could see her getting some “fuck you/in your face” tattoo, especially if she was a lesbian in such a homophobic world, getting that tattooed is even better. We also know she got her back tatted in the EC with angel wings that look almost closer to dragon wings, so I imagine they show up as almost raised dark lines like scars from the untrained tattoo artist going way too deep, making it a cross between a tattoo and scarification, even if accidental. (also white ink really wasn't a thing yet and even now is still kinda hard to tell how it will heal, so that's why I don't think she gets any white ink tats)
MATT
He's a rich boy from NYC, he could really get like… whatever he wants. Once he's famous he can afford it that's for sure, but even before then he could with his allowance similar to Allison (even if on a completely different level). However, I doubt he gets anything lol. He's not particularly religious in my HC and doesn't have the same sense of being lost like I feel Kevin does with his own parents (I mean Kevin was raised like an orphan, kinda so it makes sense). I need to develop Matt’s background further on what it means to him personally to be a Filipino-American. I have several ideas about how his parents met in the Philippines and then came here but I would need to flesh out locations and then local cultures and then his parents said opinions on tattoos and then how matt would react to said opinions. I could see him possibly getting something for dan or his kids tattooed on. Which really makes me want to have him get his first kid's name tattooed really big or intricate somewhere like on his chest over his heart and then his kid comes out as trans and he's like “...fuck” lmao and gets it removed maybe and then redone or something. I see him viewing tattoos are personal and symbolic, and if he would get something it would probably be family-oriented, possibly Dan's portrait or like his baby's footprint which I've seen before.
AARON & SETH
Stick and pokes were not nearly as common then as they are now, and I feel like people kinda have to remember how taboo tattooing was then and still is now in a lot of cultures. My family is Not happy lmaoo. But it is what it is. Stick and Pokes were not a thing bored white middle-class teens did like I see them doing now. It was seen as super sketchy and I know someone who was 16 getting tattooed in a garage by someone who was both drunk and just out of prison for the first time, and that was seen as sketchy as stick and pokes at the time. I could imagine either Seth or Aaron having a failed and fucked up stick and poke tattoo, and out of the two of them, Seth seems like the drunk tat guy. Maybe once he got drunk and mad as fuck after Allison and him broke up and she said he didn't seem serious enough so he got her name drunkenly tattooed on his arm or something and then she was even more pissed because it was spelled wrong “YOU FORGOT THE SECOND L OMFG SETH.” (I can also imagine his future girlfriends don't love it lmao). I also love the idea of Seth just having Marvin the Martian or the Tasmanian Devil tattooed on his ass.
Anyways sorry for the lack of pictures but I didn't want to do that... so I didn't. I didn't go into niche tattoo culture and history like I was expecting myself to but this also got fuckin long. Might not be what you were hoping for at all but it is my current opinion on the foxes and tattoos. (This is also surprisingly free of my own personal aesthetic opinions on tattoos and that I'm kinda proud of ngl, since my preference is none of these, but also I grew up in a very different tattoo time than them)

Chemical warfare used to teach coworker manners... #Pettyrevenge
A few years ago I used to work as active duty in the USAF in the Security Forces squadron. Basically military police. A typical workday would have me spend 12 hours checking ID's at the front gate, patrolling the base or being put in a non-moving post in the middle of nowhere in which you would spend most of the time contemplating your life choices. The last one is where our story takes place.
At the time, we were combining two different work groups (night and day shift) to build up our manpower for the week because we were expecting some important people to fly into our base. Also, all this was happening in the middle of January, so the average temp outside was around "Too F@#$ing Cold".
I was tasked with being posted on the flight line in a truck with two other airmen. One of the guys I was partnering up with, we'll call him Nate, was from my group so I already knew him. The other guy, we'll call him Jimmy, was from the other group. I didn't know much about the guy so I asked around about him.
The best way to describe him in one word would be "cornhusker". Jimmy was what you would call a good-old Midwestern boy. A good guy honestly and a decent coworker. However, he had this one particular quirk that could quickly get on your nerves. Jimmy was well known for farting and never apologizing for it! I would have understood if he had some kind of medical stomach issue or digestion problems. But nope, Jimmy was healthy as a horse and just loved ripping ass at his fullest potential.
Oh, and his justification for never apologizing for it was also priceless. Jimmy was well known for saying "What?! Farting is as natural as breathing. You want me to apologies for breathing too!?" every time. Hearing this kind of rubbed me the wrong way and so was Nate, so I decided to prepare in case he tried to pull this stunt with us. I told Nate what I had planed and his reaction said it all.
Nate: Dear God, I hope it wont have to come to this.
Me: It'll hurt me more than it will hurt him.
On the first day of us working together, it didn't take long before s!#t started to go down. Nate and Jimmy were sitting up front in the truck and I was sitting in the back seat. After about two hours of just us talking and trying to stay warm, Jimmy did exactly what we were warned he would do. Jimmy not only let out a fart that made me question if he was medically clear to serve our country, he didn't apologies or even roll down his window. This of course lead to us reacting appropriately.
Nate (while rolling down his window): Dude what the hell!! Are you dying?!
Me (while trying to cover my face because I cant roll down my window): Bro you can apologies, or at the very least commit Seppuku for this dishonor!
And of course Jimmy gave his trademark excuse.
Jimmy: What?! Farting is as natural as breathing. You want me to apologies for breathing too!?
Me: Dishonor on you, your family and your cow!
This ticked me off and so I decided to immediately take action and initiated plan F. Without Jimmy seeing, I took out a box of pure high fiber breakfast protein bars from my gear bag that I got from the commissary right before work. I don't remember how many their were in the box, 6 or 8, I just know that I ate them all in like 20 min. 1 hour later I began to feel the inner demons working their way though my intestines, so I start a conversation with Nate to give him the codeword to let him know that things were about to get bad.
Me: Yo dude, any plans this brake?
Nate: No not really, you?
Me: I was thinking about re-watching the Last Airbender movie.
Once Nate herd our code word "Airbender", and the fact that I mentioned that movie, he knew it was time to leave. Nate then excused himself to go read some "important" government emails (YouTube) in the building we were closest to and that he would be gone for a bit.
Side Note: Our post had a specific rule we had to follow. Their had to be two people at the truck at all times. One person can leave for however long to go to the bathroom, smoke, get food or whatever. But until that one person comes back, nobody else can leave. Now back to the story
At this point, Nate had been gone for about 5 min, Jimmy was chillin in the front seat and I was in the back getting ready to exercise the horror that raged inside me. I gave myself my last rights and one min later it happened. I let out the most aggressive and physically demanding fart you could ever expect a 160 lbs. Filipino to be able to do. Jimmy's initial reaction was surprisingly positive.
Jimmy: Damn boy, where I'm from we call that a tree bender! HA!
But then, 3 Seconds later, the smell hit. Jimmy began to gag and franticly started to roll down his window and stick his head out the truck.
Jimmy: Good Lord what died and decided to haunt your ass!!??
I just laughed a little and started to text Nate everything that was happening. After about another min the smell began to dissipate and Jimmy brings his head back in from the freezing cold. Once Jimmy was done rolling up this window, I once again let loose another and even bigger fart. Pretty sure I made the truck vibrate. And once again the smell forced Jimmy's head out the truck.
Jimmy: Ok seriously, what the hell?!
At that moment I just decided to just sit back and let karma take the wheel and gave back to him his famous catchphrase.
Me: What?! Farting is as natural as breathing. You want me to apologies for breathing too!?
This started a vicious cycle that lasted over half an hour. Every time the smell would begin to die down and Jimmy thought it was safe enough to stop sticking his head out the window, my butt would just lion roar again and reclaim the land. It got to the point that Jimmy just had enough and decided to just get out the truck.
Jimmy (While stepping out of the truck): Nope! That's it! Cant handle it! My eyes are burning! Your messed up cuz this isn't natural!
Me (In a stereotypical Boston accent): Hey, you mind! I'm breathing back here! One hundred percent O'natural!
Jimmy got out and because of the rule we had to follow he couldn't leave the area or go inside the closest building with Nate. All Jimmy could do was stand outside the truck in the cold until my lower intestines decided it was done, which was about another 2.5 hours. And don't worry, we all had some decent cold weather gear.
When it was all said and done, we all worked the rest of the night and week without any more incidences. I don't know if he went back to his old ways when he went back to night shift, I just know he didn't pull anymore stunts like that with us. Because of that, I like to think he learned his lesson.
I hope you all enjoyed reading this and if you know what exact laws I broke in the Geneva Convention, please let me know because I pretty sure I violated a few of them. Thank you, and I'll end this by simply saying
"Respect is a two-way street"

Paying attention to Shin Hye-sun as the Mr Queen
i miss a lot of opportunities to discover this #actress. Magtaglish na lang me neh? I want to write a normal conversation with #filipino #fans like we are at home (nasa bahay lang tayu). Im writing in English because if some foreigner will read my blog (umaasa), they will understand it although I don't have a proper education or I don't have any knowledge about English language. All I know is verb is an action word #lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media
question #1 : may #filipino community ba dito? if meron please like and share haha...
anyway so here's what happen
2016 my coworkers are watching she was pretty and oh my ghost during lunch. I ignore them
In this year Legend of the Blue Sea was also famous in the Philippines because of Jun Ji-hyun and Lee Min-ho. I didn't know that hye sun was also part of the show. I ignored it.
2018 a closed friend told me she was watching My golden Life in GMA channel 7 Tagalog dub. I ignored it.
2019 I resign then I watch tons of Korean drama in 3 months starring # jangnara and #goara
Jang Nara
-hello monster with Seo In-guk (leading man in high school king savy where hye sun has a supporting role, i ignored it.)
-school 2013 - jang nara as a teacher (hye sun was one of the students with few lines) I ignored it.
Go Ara
-Miss Hammurabi with Kim Myung-soo ( or Infinites L, 2019 he was the leading man of Hye sun in Angels last Mission. I ignored it)
I also know Angel Eyes 2014 but I ignored it.
Hirap mag english. Nosebleed.
2020 March lock down for almost 2 months so I go back to what I love the most watching Korean dramas
this time its actress Kim hyun joo #marathon and guess what? KHJ and Hye sun have the same agency YNK. #surprised and #shocked me.
Then Crash landing on you came, I know the main lead Hyun Bin, Son Ye-jin, but who is this guy? Kim Jung-hyun. He looks so good in this drama. He was so stylish, cute, funny and charismatic.
Tumblr media
to make the long story short hye sun and me almost met... joke.
her Korean dramas are famous but I'm very picky? is that the right term? when it comes to #kdramas I always choose the best or the highest rated or the number 1 or the leading actress are my #favorites like Kim Sun-a, Go Hyun-Jung, Lee Young-ae, Lee Bo-young, Kim Hee-ae and of course Kim Hyun-joo
so... she's my new favorite.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2021 January. I was just curious about the NO 1 Korean drama and it was Mr Queen. The ratings was consistently getting higher. So I search about it... I know Alberto Gu but who is this woman? The Korean drama where I first heard and read the name "Shin Hye-sun"
I read the synopsis. Comedy is my favorite genre so I was intrigued by this new actress. I told my sister and she was done watching eps 1 to 14 in just 1 day on January 24. MQ was live every sat-sun.
I was hooked by the show and by her acting ability. Feb 14 was the happy ending day .
Tumblr media
Its been 10 years since I felt so crazy for a kdrama and that was Queen Seondeok 2009
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
i love deokman
i love mishil
i love his son bidam
and history repeat itself...
QSD and MQ have issues with their writers and I'm like WHAT????!!!
After the show it became a depressing month. I don't want to tell all the details. I had enough. All I care right now is to spread the word that Mr queen destiny is greatness. It already made a TV history and I wish It will reach more millions of people. Its a fiction. Its goal was to make everyone laugh. To lessen the pain of dealing with Covid19.
Anyway I hope for the best. I pray that we can survive this pandemic. Please choose to see positivity. Please lets stop hate. Our different opinion against each other will not save us.
sorry hindi ako nagtagalog haha... this is how i practice english even if im lacking... tama ba? hahhahahha
pahabol... i wish shin hye sun will have a Hollywood movie or a Oscar or be married to a foreign actor like Leonardo DiCaprio

"Prickly Thorn but Sweetly Worn"
Tumblr media
Our Creative Non-Fiction and English for Academic and Professional Purposes subjects collaborated for an I Learn and Share Activity. We are assigned to write a non-fiction story about the “Undying Social Issue that Affects Filipino Life.” The theme was generated for us to see the actual catastrophic situation of our country especially the invisible line that separates the privileged and the unprivileged. And how social issues affect society.
The title of our story came from a song of an American rock duo─ The White Stripes. Prickly Thorn But Sweetly Worn fits the story of our chosen family. As you read our story, you will know how the family surpasses all the challenges that test their love for each other and faith in heaven. The story revolves around Sweetie and Alfredo’s family who fight against the problems that life throws. Despite the unending struggles that they need to face, their family remained indestructible. They had to go through a lot of problems and many uncomfortable situations. But they never gave up, and stand up again to face another cold and rough tomorrow.
Seeking for a Candidate. Our group searched for 3 possible and ideal prospects that will match our chosen topic ─ Social issues and its impact on Filipino families. Every member suggested a list of names that suited the topic. Our group decided to pick Mrs. Stephen Cayco and her family, Mrs. Maricris Batistis, and her family, and lastly, Mrs. Sweety M. Castillo. The most important thing to do before anything else is to ask for the permission of the interviewees, properly informed them that the pieces of information they'll provide will be featured and submitted for educational purposes only. The group also assured the 3 chosen families that we will maintain the story as non-fiction. We will not add additional information to the story that we will be writing.
Plans and Groundwork. Participants should answer the information sheet provided by the interviewers, for it will serve as the base of the story. Then, to properly determine the situations and information to include, our group formulated ten (10) questions for the interview that will tackle the respondent's past experiences and struggles and how they managed to surpass them. We also passed our questions to our teacher if the questions are grammatically correct and don’t invade too much privacy from the respondents.
Discovering the gains and losses. Formulated questions were presented to the interviewees. Their response can be in English or Filipino. For the documentation, either it would be a video recording of a virtual or face-to-face interview, a voice recording, or an online interview. This part was a little bit hard for the group because of the pandemic. We still have to practice the safety protocols while we are doing the interview. For, Mrs. Stephen Cayco and Mrs. Maricris Batistis, only one of our groupmates go to their house for an interview. The manpower was limited because we are still teenagers and we can’t go outside our house. And when it’s turned for Mrs. Sweety M. Castillo, we conducted an online interview through video call via Messenger. While performing an interview, it has been difficult for us to read or hear their answers. We can see how tough they are for overcoming those storms they experienced in their life. I was also a bit teary-eyed while reviewing their answers.
Composing a Story Chart. On this part of our journey on writing our Creative Non-Fiction Story, we are assigned to do a story chart consist of Beginning, Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, and Ending. Our group learned a lot while working on this task. The formulated questions helped in composing the structures of the story, as well as the information sheet answered by the participants. . By reading their answers again, we also learned a lot about their story. Their life lessons became an inspiration for us to continue writing the story. We are also thankful to the 3 participants for being patient, open, and supportive during our ILS Activity. We didn't hear them complain about the entire interview.
Diamond in the rough. Our final task was both a smooth and rough ride for the whole group. Choosing who will be featured in our story was already fixed from the very beginning. It was Mrs. Sweety Castillo and her family was our personal choice. She was also close to our hearts since we knew her, a year ago when we decided to study at STI. Choosing the best title and best words to describe their whole life was a bit easy. We came up with the title “Prickly Thorn But Sweetly Worn”. The title was also inspired because of Mrs. Sweety’s name too. But it was also hard for her son to narrate their story. What’s hard for us was determining the climax of the story because of the many problems they need to pass. Our story was indeed an inspiration to continue.
We ended our blog with a beautiful quotation from one of the most famous Disney movie, "Brave" saying: “Our fate lives within us: you only have to be brave enough to see it.” As the story traverses its end, the group learned a lot from the story of Sweetie M. Castillo. Especially how the story justifies the quotation that the real fight belongs to the real fighter. And your family is the one that never leaves your side during your battles.

Too Late the Hero
It was Harvey Dent who uttered the famous lines, “You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” A foreshadowing statement, as Dent later on personifies his very words when he goes on to become Two Face in the “The Dark Knight” Batman movies.
Tumblr media
This statement cannot be any truer, and we all can recount both real-life and fictional characters who easily represent this notion. The true-to-life “villains” we know of today may have actually started out as idealists, heroes, or savior-like archetypes that we used to looked up to – and looked past whatever side blemishes they also possessed in order to justify their actions. I think the best contemporary example of this – is the person whom Filipinos notoriously love to discuss nowadays – the person that needs no introduction, President Duterte.
About to Croak?
President Duterte has recently been the talk of the town all the more when rumors circulated that he may have contracted COVID-19, while other rumors pointedly said that he was already on his deathbed. To augment such rumors, it was said that he may have allegedly even flown to Singapore to have himself checked. His office was quick to quash any such news by posting proof of life photos of the President, where he is seen to be eating a meal with the first family in Davao. Well, one thing we can all agree on however, is that he did not look his best.
The more significant and underlying message in this recent raucous is that, the general consensus on social media is that many had their fingers crossed for a new President. It looks like Duterte’s star power is quickly fading.
Tumblr media
RUDY and RODY
I was reminded of a conversation that a friend and I had around three weeks ago. During our usual, light political banter, I suddenly remembered how my parents used to compare President Duterte to American political icon, “Rudy” Giuliani. Quite serendipitously (and as though Netflix read my phone messages or possibly my mind), minutes later, I came across a new Netflix documentary entitled “Fear City: New York vs. The Mafia” where Giuliani is documented to have played a significant role in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This true crime documentary examines the rise and fall of organized crime in New York in the 1970s to early 1980s. It narrates the dark tale of how the Big Apple once transformed into the playground of underbelly operations of The Mafia – composed of the five major Italian-American crime families and their sophisticated network of ruthless henchmen. Law enforcers could not put a stop to their rings of crime, or even implicate them, and others that dared come close, found themselves or their loved ones in a rather, messy situation. These crime families of Italian descent were basically your true-to-life gangsters from which The Godfather Trilogy was based on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Batman, Robin and Commissioner Gordon in Gotham City
Bringing down the Mob back then was a feat everyone thought impossible. Nevertheless, joint forces between the FBI and Giuliani (then U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York; 1983 -1989), and his handpicked team of prosecutors were able to do so – and with much required grit and tenacity. Giuliani especially, was credited to be the single piece of rice that tipped the scale in this momentous moment in the history of criminal justice. After which, Giuliani’s political career began to skyrocket. Despite losing his first election in 1989, he eventually gets elected Mayor of New York in 1993, and then reelected in 1997 to hold the position until 2001.
Tumblr media
During his term as Mayor of New York, Giuliani’s most popular platform was his “toughness on crime.” Such that, the gentrification, revitalization and “clean-up” of New York and significant decrease in crime rates during those heyday years are largely attributed to him. His appointment of NYPD Chief of Police, Bill Bratton also proved effective, and is often the popular topic of business case studies today. Bratton did not resort to brute force alone. In fact, he was said to be data-driven, resourceful and efficient. His non-traditional, out-of-the-box thinking, many would agree, had indeed brought about real, lasting positive change in New York.
Tumblr media
Giuliani was also known for making popular what is known as the “perp walk”, wherein he would orchestrate public arrests, worthy of media frenzies and major headlines, of high-profile suspects, usually of white-collar crimes. The nature of these arrests garnered some criticism of course, but it was not enough then to tarnish his image and push him far away from the good graces of the American people, especially New Yorkers. He is also highly commended for his post-9/11 (2001) disaster responses and was even knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for these tremendous efforts. He was even named TIME magazine's Person of the Year in 2001.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
 Fall from Grace
However, fast forward years later to now 2020, many of Giuliani’s constituents and longtime supporters who once held “America’s Mayor” of the highest esteem, often say that the Rudy Giuliani of the past is long gone. Embroiled in various controversies and investigations, not to mention issues that involve being President Trump’s current legal adviser, he has said to have become the very type of white-collar “perps” he used to round up and arrest. It is quite unfortunate, isn’t it, these kind of tragic hero to zero stories. Time is not on his side now, but who knows if there is still a chance for a comeback.
Rudy Giuliani’s story sounds very familiar.
Tumblr media
Rody
Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, in Davao, Philippines to be exact, during the same time that Rudy Giuliani was rising to fame, there lived and breathed another Mayor with a very similar tough guy image – Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte. An attorney as well, he also began his career in the prosecutor’s office.
Tumblr media
Photo taken from The New York Times: Rodrigo Duterte posing with an Uzi submachine gun in 1994, when he was mayor of Davao City in the Philippines.
Tumblr media
 Duterte Harry
Duterte “made his bones” by allegedly taking crime into his own hands. Before assuming the Presidency, he was known as the gun-toting, smart-talkin’, fearless and tough Mayor who cleaned up Davao which back then, was supposedly a war-torn region due to the emergence of the New People’s Army (NPA) post Marcos-regime. People nodded in approval because he produced “quick” results.
If Rudy Giuliani had his Chief of Police, Bill Bratton and the NYPD, Rody Duterte had a comparable squad as well. With the help of his elite unit of police enforcers, coined as the “Davao Death Squad” (DDS), they were able to arrest crime suspects, such as alleged (but non-convicted) drug dealers and petty thieves and parade them throughout the streets, for behold, all to know and see. This sounds like the Filipino version of a perp walk. In extreme cases, sometimes suspects were allegedly found dead in alleys or eskinitas, their bloody bodies mutilated.
Yet, it could be said that quite a number of Davaoenos, as well as Filipinos beyond the Mindanao region, supported this kind of vigilante method because they felt safer, and they felt that finally, the wheels of justice were turning. To simplify this narrative by using a fictional analogy again, it is the same train of thought on why we have a great admiration for Batman and the like.
Many believed this was what the Philippines truly needed - a “strongman” to discipline the country, which to be fair, is an idea that can understandably seem like the right and sound solution, given the Philippines’s web of problems. Not many are willing to further dissect, assess and accept what is truly needed to lead the Philippines. Duterte’s notoriety thus gained much popularity, and his savior persona spread like wildfire throughout the country, propelling him to the Presidential seat in 2016.
One-Trick Pony in a Small Pond
Four years later, come 2020, and here we are, amidst a terrible pandemic with no signs of turning the tide in favor of a victory. I’ve heard one too many times, friends and colleagues say how they despise being a Filipino, and are looking for opportunities to leave and start a new life elsewhere immediately. I can’t say I blame them.
Tumblr media
The once highly respected and beloved Davao Mayor has become the Philippines’s Public enemy number one, for reasons we all know today such as, but not limited to:
Militaristic and shotgun approaches instead of “comprehensive, scientific and systematic policies” to mitigate the pandemic  (Read: Lives vs Livelihood Tradeoff?, August 5, 2020)
Lack of economic and fiscal planning and No transparency on stimulus packages and foreign loans (Read: A Perfect Storm, May 22, 2020)
Preferential treatment towards those in positions of power and unequal application of the law (Read: On lockdown and pushed over the edge, April 30, 2020)
Playing Russian Roulette on community quarantine implementations
Deflecting faults and shortcomings through the “Pasaway citizen” narrative
Demeaning local government leaders/efforts when they come up with their own local initiatives
Putting China’s interests ahead of the Philippines (Read: From Ugly Duckling to Black Swan, April 3, 2020)
And some of the more specific controversies that we can’t help but feel overwhelming emotions for:
Trial of Maria Ressa and his attack on free press and journalism
Shutdown of ABS-CBN which includes 11,000 employees to lose their jobs during a time like this
Inaction of recent PhilHealth scandal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps si Mayor should have stayed as Mayor, or perhaps evolved to a different role beyond public service, instead of eyeing gargantuan tasks too big for him to handle. He may have been “effective” as Davao’s Mayor, but running a country is a whole different ballgame.
It was in fact, the late Miriam Santiago, during the final 2016 Presidential debate held in Dagupan, Pangasinan (April 24, 2016) who pointed out, “We are not choosing a manager, administrator, etc. We are choosing the next President of the Philippines for the next 6 years.“ She even went on to enumerate three minimum criteria that a President must have in his or her arsenal in order to effectively lead, such as “1) Academic Excellence; 2) Professional Excellence, and 3) Moral Integrity” – all of which majority Filipinos flippantly shrugged off as useless qualities. I agreed with her which is why I voted for Mar Roxas. Maybe those who voted for Duterte regret this decision now, and hopefully see the wisdom behind Santiago’s statements.
As I’ve said many times over, Duterte peddled a dream that the Philippines can only be great again with an “iron-fisted” leader, and sadly but quite expectedly, our misinformed voters ate it all up - hook, line and sinker. (Read: ORAS NA, April 26, 2016).
I’d like to believe that Duterte perhaps started out as an idealist, with the genuine desire to carve out change where he thought he could. However, somewhere along the way, he lost himself and what he stood for when he let his ego get in the way. I think he himself now knows, but cannot admit to the public, that a one-trick pony has no business leading a highly complex, difficult and problematic country such as the Philippines.

More Analogies in 2020: The Year of the Rat led by the Pied Piper
Other than Duterte, three other political personalities that will forever be remembered as the shameful faces of the COVID-19 situation in the Philippines are Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, Speaker of the House Allan Peter Cayetano and the ever-infamous, Department of Health Secretary Francisco Duque. I surmise history will not be so kind to them, and their roles and decisions in this crisis will continue to be told on, even when “this is all over.”
Tumblr media
Infestation of Rats
These three loyal lackeys of Duterte can be likened to the rats in the children’s fairy tale of the Pied Piper who is no less than Duterte. Roque, Cayetano and Duque seem like educated and smart people, leaving no other explanation for their horrible decisions, except that they have long sold their souls to Duterte, and are in too deep to back out now. They’ve let themselves fall under some kind of spell. A consolation in the story of the Pied Piper, is that the entranced rats follow the Pied Piper’s hypnotizing music to their eventual demise and drown at sea. The Pied Piper however, just leaves them there and walks on. Seems like a foreboding scenario, figuratively speaking.
It would be best if the story ended there. However, we find that the Pied Piper, like our very own version, is a vengeful one, and will stop at nothing until he has accomplished a personal vendetta towards whomever crosses him. In our Pied Pier’s skewed view, he feels that his opponents have gravely wronged him, or have been incredibly ungrateful for all the “work” he has achieved. His next plan of action is to hit them where it hurts the most – by getting to the children or those “most vulnerable and without a voice”. Seizing the power of his position, he is able to demonize multitudes through his filthy words, terrorizing laws and drug wars. (Read: Dead Kids, February 20, 2020).
In so many dark metaphors, in the dead of the night, while everyone cluelessly sleeps, the Pied Piper plays his hypnotizing song that “vulnerable communities” are uncontrollably drawn to, forced to follow, or fooled into blindly following, until they all disappear without a trace, possibly never to be found again.
Light at the end of a Long Tunnel
However, I think our Pied Piper may have made a costly miscalculation. He may have robbed the country blind and killed countless lives (directly and indirectly), while we ignorantly slept, but he has ignited a fire. He has seemed to awoken a sleeping giant – a sleeping giant, unified in anger against this administration and what it stands for. Is Change Coming?

LILIA CUNTAPAY AND THE FILM INDUSTRY
Tumblr media
Six Degrees of Separation From Lilia Cuntapay opens an opportunity for the masses to get to know Lilia Cuntapay. The actress who has played as an extra in a 30-year career finally gets the spotlight. The film was written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone and was an entry in Cinema One Originals 2011. The story follows Lilia through the day as she goes to work as a bit player for a television melodrama, or as she fantasizes how she will deliver her speech when she is awarded as the Best Supporting Actress for the very first time. This mockumentary tells the harsh reality of the film industry and her struggles as an actress in a satirical manner. The first hurdle that was presented in the film is about her name. A few people were asked if they know who Lilia Cuntapay is and alas, her name doesn’t ring a bell to most people. Although she is dubbed as ‘Queen of Philippine Horror Movies’, the majority doesn’t recognize her name. I think that is the reason why sometimes a screen name is important. We have stars like Mura, Dagu, Ai-Ai, Alex Gonzaga, and many more artists who use an alias. Compared to their real names, their stage name is quite catchy, easy to remember, and understood. For example, Toni Gonzaga's real name is Celestine Cruz Gonzaga-Soriano. If she chose to use her real name, likely, people won't remember it. Professional artists should use a simple and remarkable name. Since Lilia Cuntapay doesn't use a pseudonym, her name doesn’t make her distinctive from the rest. Near the end of the film, when described who Lilia was, people were able to recognize her. They recalled her as the old lady, ghost, or witch in horror movies. What stuck to most people was her image and not her name.
This leads me to the next point, before "Six Degrees of Separation From Lilia Cuntapay" she hasn’t won any awards. She’s been in most horror films and yet she didn’t get the recognition she deserves. In the film, it was mentioned she did everything, coming early on the location of the set, memorizing all of her lines, waiting for hours to say her lines only to be told that she's been rescheduled. She went as far as doing sexy roles in hopes something would happen to her career or at least be given the chance to act in blockbuster movies. Unfortunately, her passion and hard work do not equate to her fame. It’s heartbreaking to see, all her efforts come to naught.
Tumblr media
People shouldn’t base the skills of actors/actresses on their fame. Underrated actors/actresses aren’t less than Kris Aquino, Vilma Santos, Marian Rivera, and Kathryn Bernado in terms of acting. In general, it is hard to strive in the film industry. Blockbuster movies usually cast big-name actors/actresses. One of the reasons why film studios cast popular actors/actresses is that people are more likely to watch it than indie film movies that cast no-name actors.
The sad part is, most of the time in the Philippines, actors/actresses shoot up to fame due to their visuals rather than their talents. If not for their looks, it’s because they’re related to a famous person or they’re in a love team. I won’t say the name but some of the actors/actresses over exaggerate their acting whether it’s the emotion of crying, anger, happiness, etc. What I like about Lilia Cuntapay is that she uses her features to her advantage. Although I think she has a lot more potential to portray different kinds of characters rather than just being a ghost/witch. Like in this film, she had this natural way of acting the humorous scenes in the film. For example, when she was showing the posters of the movies she was in, along with her self-made posters. She didn’t do much and only asked “Di mo ba gusto Direk?” (Referring to her self-made posters). Nonetheless, it made me laugh.
Tumblr media
Another thing I like about this film is that it did a great job integrating fiction and real-life situations. There were some times in the film I was wondering if it was only made-up or was it based on Lilia’s experiences. There’s a scene in the movie where Lilia had to use the toilet. She wasn’t allowed to use the portalet (portable toilet) since it was only for staff and actors/actresses. The guard didn’t recognize her so he didn't let her pass and insisted it wasn’t for other people to use. What I could say for sure is that there’s a huge gap of treatment between famous and not well-known artists. For small artists like Lilia Cuntapay, being interviewed by established tv networks means a lot to her. She even invited some guests to her house to watch the broadcast of ABS-CBN assuming her interview will be on TV. It turns out they didn’t broadcast it. The hard thing being in the film industry is that if you’re not famous enough you can get cast aside any second. The media would always prioritize showbiz rags, talk shows, and gossip. It's what gets them views as Filipinos like to gossip for their pastime. A chunk of primetime news is even devoted to “showbiz chika.” The development of technology has intensified this culture with fans following actors on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, to know about their profile.
All in all, I would say this is a good movie. It has introduced me to a different kind of genre; It mixes reality into fiction. It makes me laugh and warms my heart whilst it opens my eyes to the harsh reality of the film industry. Not only that, it motivates me to work hard on my dreams no matter how hard it gets.

Christine Mae C. Bagazin
Leaders become great not because of their power but, because of their ability to empower others (John Maxwell). Leaders are the ones who have authority and leads a group of people may it be in a family, a classroom setting, a city or even a nation. They are highly looked up to by the people because of their skills. However, one does not instantly become a good leader. And even sad to say, not all the people who label themselves as leaders, are good ones. However, we must dig deeper in what it means to be a leader and a member for both roles are very vital in every day circumstances. We must thoroughly evaluate different perceptions and narratives about it and there should be a proper assessment of status quo as we came to know and realize what being a leader is really all about.
When we were young, we saw a lot of figures and models that shaped our perceptions of leaders. Usually in cartoons, we identify kings, queens or the monarchy as the authority thus we discern them as leaders or rulers. Characters such as the parents of our favourite prince and princesses like Ariel’s parents or Pocahontas’s parents or Master Shifu in Kung Fu Panda or Li Shang in Mulan are leadership figures in famous cartoon movies. The usual narratives in movies shown for kids display leaders as these people who could command the entire nation to do anything at his/her will or anyone who could have anything that they want. Though this is not exactly the case for all the characters, this has somehow become accustomed. Leaders are shown as these fierce, strong, smart and brave characters and as a young mind watching these films with these types of characters, there is no doubt that we truly admire these personalities even till now when we’ve grown. How these films portray leaders are really vital and important especially to the effect it gives to the mass audience.
Surely in our homes, our parents are considered as the default leaders for they guide us through right and wrong and they are the ones who basically teaches us everything when it comes to basic things and it will be instilled in our mind as we grow older. However, our first take on being leaders would most likely be in school. We get to experience first-hand the ropes of authority and influence. However there is this stigma in school that I am not fond of but it is regularly practiced especially during grade school and high school days. The students who is the smartest are most likely chosen to be the leaders. The reason why this narrative exists is because if you are the smartest of the bunch, you are most likely to properly assess the situation and know what to do hence why they will associate you of being a leader. Especially here in the Philippines, if you are intelligent or when you have high grades and is part of the honor roll, you are put in a higher pedestal than the others. It is because they view intelligence as a high trait and so honor students are highly looked upon in school. However, I have personally experienced and witnessed that this narrative is false because of certain loopholes. Firstly, we must nuance leadership and intelligence. As I have mentioned, since intelligence is put in a high pedestal, most people will think that this is the most vital quality of being a leader. However that is not the case. The most vital quality a leader must have is simply the ability to lead. Qualities like resiliency, integrity, having initiative and more is what sculpts a person to be a great leader. Of course, it is not to say that intelligence does not play a big role in this but that quality could be easily overpowered especially in terms of leadership. To paint a picture, imagine a classroom setting. The group with the top 1 student as a leader is less likely to prosper than a group with a leader that has good leadership skills. The deadlock with this narrative is since because you are smart, you are automatically part of the line of leaders but as we grow older and as we experience different people and leaders alike, we can really say that to become a leader, intelligence is nothing if you don’t know how to properly lead.
I’ve had my fair share of experience with incompetent leaders. One of the most striking experience that I had was in Grade school. We had mandatory scouting and so we had many different activities. Aside from our moderator, we also have classmates who attended special scouting training and are considered ‘leaders’. There was this one activity wherein we were tasked to learn how to knot-tie. The teacher showed us how to do it and we were put into groups so that we could make an output based on the discussion. Since knot-tying was a very complex lesson, each group had about 3-4 leaders to assist in making the output. At that time, I thought the leaders knew how to knot-tie since they basically trained for it and they also claim that they are good at it too. But alas, when we asked for help because we were confused, they started scolding us and telling us that we were not listening properly and that we should find a way to do it. They told us that we should properly make a decent output or else they will be scolded by the moderator. Back then in my 13 year old mind, I was baffled and mad. They have no right to call themselves leaders when they can’t even help us and even scolded us for something that we genuinely don’t know about instead. My perception of leaders shifted because of the leaders that I have encountered when I was in grade six. Even at a young age, it was then that I realized that anyone can become a leader but it takes great skill and hard work to become a great one.
As the years pass by, I had no leadership experience, and I was always just one of the group members. I was satisfied with it, but in Grade 8, I was suddenly chosen to become the science chairman of our class in that grading. Needless to say, I was really a wreck, and I was mostly unsure of the things that I’ve done that time, but rest assured that I tried my very best to serve my classmates and my teachers. Surprisingly, people had good remarks about my leadership, and I was even elected as one of the classroom leaders in 9th grade. From then on, I had taken a lot of leadership roles in organizations and in clubs. I improve more as I took on a lot of roles and responsibilities. My experience had taught me a lot of things, and I could really say that I had become a good and decent leader. I had won awards and gotten recognition, but most of all, I had developed a deep love of service. People might think that people serve leaders because they are the ones who are giving commands and are the ones in charge. However, as I have gained experience through my many leadership endeavors, the people do not serve the leader, for it is the leader that serves the people.
Those experiences of mine are only on a small scale perspective. However, if we look at a wider and bigger spectrum, we can say that being a leader of a large group or a nation is one big responsibility. Not only will you handle a lot of people and a lot of burden, you are also under scrutiny and criticism. A great example of this is political leaders. Political figures such as Pres. Duterte, Vice Pres Robredo, Executive Sec. Medialdea and Mayor Labella are few of the many political leaders running the government of the Philippines. Since we are in a democratic country, it is the people that chooses their leaders. Candidates shows us their vision and plans for the future in hopes that we may choose to vote them. Gullible as we are, citizens here only base their votes in the surface level of things and they don’t properly asses candidates and their backgrounds. Traits like social statutes, popularity and looks are scrutinized more by the people rather than their leadership and political backgrounds. The politician who could give more to the people in terms of monetary value is more likely to win than politicans who give less. And because of these factors, there is no clear reassurance that the politicals leaders who won, are competent and good ones. Morever, as constituents, it is our duty to assess, criticize and overlook their actions for us to be aware and it might serve as their checks and balances.
We all have the right to express and most especially, we have the right to yearn for good political leaders that could properly govern the country. That is why it is really important for us to be aware of what is happening. We have the right to criticize our government leaders if it could lead to the betterment of our country. So let us ask ourselves this: are the government leaders we have right now, enough to make our country prosper? Or do they have their own personal intentions that they want to fulfill instead? Needless to say, we can’t directly and really know their true motives if whether they would really want to serve the country or they are only doing it out of their own personal reasons. The only thing we could do is to assess, criticize and be aware of how they handle our country. In order for us to do this, we must know the proper qualities of a good leader and we must not be ignorant of the current events happening in status quo. Whether it be in a healthy political discourse or a messy fight in Twitter, we must involve ourselves in the discussion and be aware of their actions for it would really reflect in our country.
An example scenario is the very news of Bong Revilla running for senator. Even if he was involved in the Pork Barrel issue and he has cases of plunder, he still won the elections. Now a lot of people claims that he is no fit to be a senator but why was he ever even voted in the first place if people deemed him to be too incompetent? It all goes down to the trait of Filipinos not knowing how to properly assess and choose a proper candidate that results to how they still vote for inaduquate leaders despite their past crimes. Right now, Senator Revilla is still severly criticized but at the end of the day, he got the position and he is the one in authority even if a portion of Filipinos aren’t too fond of him. Sadly, that type of situation does not happen to Senator Revilla only but too a lot of politicians. In the present, our government leaders are struggling to cater to the people in this pandemic and their true colors are peeking to the public of their possible hidden agendas. Truly it is in times of calamity and troubles do we really see how a great leader leads his/her people to better circumstances. If constituents don’t see a good future with these leaders, then just like what I realized when I was in 6th grade in my scouting experience, let us all remember that anyone can be leaders but it takes properly honned skills, a passion for service and a dedication to the people  to become a great leader at the very end of the day.

Six Degree separation from Lilia Cuntapay

Six Degree separation from Lilia Cuntapay
Directed by: Antoinette Jadaone
Six degree separation from Lilia Cuntapay is a mockumentary following the life of an old actress named Lilia Cuntapay, This was premiered in the Cinema one originals in 2011 this sparks new opportunity for Direk Antoinette Jadone and Lilia Cuntapay from their future project and Lilia wins award as a best actress during that year.  As the Film starts Direk Antoinette Jadone starts to ask a question to random citizens if you ever heard the name Lilia Cuntapay the answers are always no or “sino yun” and interviews a lot of famous directors Peque Gallaga and Lore Reyes Throughout the film, Direk Antoinette Jadone explained the Kevin bacon theory to Lilia where everyone in the film industry is linked together from Claire Danes to Lilia. the film shows how she will achieve her awards and practices her award speech, Guess you never heard her name but she is famous for her face in the horror industry a 72-year-old actress she typically plays Mananagal or witch in her horror films like shake rattle and roll, She is always seen as an extra in horror and comedy films and directors experimented how she will scare the Filipino audience by hanging up in the car and tying her up in a swivel chair and they focused a fan to her creating a witch with the hairs resulting in a witch in real life, I watched her old films when I was young I was really scared of her face despite of inadequate effects during those eras of horror films. The directors had to rely on their skills to perform this tricks because at that time digital effects were expensive so the directors have to rely on their practical effects skills, despite her appearance as a manananggal or a mangkukulam she managed to be the main actress in six degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay. This film shows how the film industry works, It is a sad reality where beauty or fame outweighs talent and the reality which shows that time and age can be harsh to an actor or actress and reality can be disappointing sometimes there is one scene in the film where she was interviewed by abs-cbn, After her long wait for the interviewers to come she was so excited that she calls her daughter from abroad and invites her friends to her house it was a chaos that even kagawad even came to her house with a small living room, show that she is on one of the biggest news segment and one of the biggest stations here in the Philippines after the showbiz segment she is sadly not shown on the television after a long wait and the news program only shows her name which broke down my heart as she tries to hide her sadness to Direk and to the audience and even calls her daughter abroad that her segment was cut down from the television. I like how Direk Antoinette Jadaone makes this mockumentary as if it was a documentary of the life of Lilia Cuntapay and as the film progress, you will question yourself “Documentary pa ba to” I was very confused while watching this film until one of our professor told us that it was a mockumentary if our professor didn’t tell us that it was a mockumentary I will still believe it was a documentary. This film was very hilarious to watch as the film progressed I like how she imagined Filipino humor. It's like you are watching an American tv series “The Office” Direk perfectly executes shaky camera with awkwardly humorous lines, With throughout the film as a filmmaker, she is able to get the struggles of a filmmaker while making it humorous to the audience. I like the part where she comes early to a set and she was excited that she will have a role for an independent film, She waited for almost a day waiting and suddenly they swapped her role for having a head to waist white hair and her face is similar to witches you seen in the early Hollywood horror movies, From being an extra with a line to being a passerby with no lines and no close-up shots. They perfectly executed how her hardships being an actress and they have perfected it by showing how claustrophobic her house was despite her age she can manage to go up and down in that narrow space. Direk Antoinette Jadone did really well finding her story despite Lilia is infamous and not very known to the film industry she manages to pays tribute to the 30-decade infamous queen of horror, Direk Attoneite Jadone really pulls off the best of Lilia and wins an award without spilling a single drop of tears or crying heavily in the entire duration of the movie. This film really shifted from north to south when the first half of the film was humorously funny to being sad and being unappreciated and contests big actresses in the film industry I love how Direk Jadone supports and underrated actress to winning award. To be that everyone knows but doesn’t know the name, her face will be remembered in the film industry this will be the foundation on how horror and classical Pinoy films should be. This will be a lesson to me as a filmmaker that everything has a story to tell whether you are infamous or not.

Any cool small businesses in your area? So many. Metro Manila is generally quite a small area so it opens up a lot of room for small businesses to thrive and not be eaten up by bigger companies. People in my age group are also more likely to check out small businesses, so it’s served as fuel for more and more to pop up. My favorite would be the bar that my college friends and I regularly went to before lockdown, it’s called Tomato Kick but we all call it TK. I also used to go to this shop called The Common Room that sold all sorts of stickers, stationery, knickknacks, plants, oils, etc. but unfortunately they’ve permanently closed due to the pandemic :(
If you use libraries, what is the largest overdue fine you've ever had? Something like ₱300-₱400. The overdue fine in my school was like ₱2/day though, so do the math and you’ll figure out just how long I didn’t return my books loooool, it was pretty much unreturned for the entire school year. I’ll never forget how surprised the librarian looked when she computed my total fees lol.
Do you ever borrow things other than books from the library? I don’t think so. I definitely should have made the most of our college’s library though - they let us borrow old and classic films, and I just never availed of those services.
Are there still any movie rental places left where you live? No, pretty sure everyone here is all over Netflix now.
Do you ever buy secondhand books (or DVDs, video games, CDs)? Or do you prefer them to be brand new? Of course. The smell of a brand new book is always nice, but it’s SO satisfying to see something you really like at a secondhand goods shop and see that it costs 1/3 or 1/4 its original price. I’ve had awesome finds at used book stores.
Have you seen the version of The Addams Family with Tim Curry as Gomez? No, I’ve never seen any versions of it.
What was the last TV show you were hooked on? THE CROWNNNNN. I haven’t been able to continue it for around a month now because I’ve been stressed and depressed, but goddamn is it a good show.
Have you ever started a book and never finished it? So many times. I have more unfinished books than ones I was able to read all the way through.
Do you have a favorite drummer? Who? I don’t have a favorite but watching Whiplash did get me so amazed by Buddy Rich.
What about a favorite guitarist? Who? No favorite either, but I’m biased towards Lita Ford’s guitar work with The Runaways.
Do you ever write fanfic? Of what? I used to write them when I was 12...they were all very bad. I’m cringing just thinking back to it lmao. That was the one venture I needed to try to know I wasn’t cut out for fiction writing.
Do you ever READ fanfic? Of what? Tons. I mostly read ones of my wrestling ships, especially CM Punk and AJ Lee back when they were a couple on-screen.
Do you have a favorite poet? Not into poetry, so I don’t have a favorite. I do love my girlfriend’s poems though. She gets poetry bursts very rarely but when she pens one, they are always very nice to read.
How many members are in the last band you listened to? Three at the moment. They used to have five, then three, then two, then one, then now three.
Do you have a favorite classical composer? I do not.
Do you ever accidentally clip your toenails too short and they hurt? Just a couple of times, but it’s a big reason why I stopped trying to cut them too short.
Have you ever had multicolored/rainbow hair? If not, would you ever want it? No, and no. I’m okay with dyeing my hair but I really prefer to have it in just one color.
What kind of hats, if any, do you like to wear? Beanies, caps, and sun hats.
Have you ever thought somebody was cute but no longer found them attractive once you got to know them better? What specifically about them turned you off? This is gonna be such a mean thing to say now considering the circumstances lol but I remember when my friends and I were all still new applicants for our org, we found Nacho super attractive (he really was, objectively speaking) but he was always too awkward when at a table with us and initially came off as a lousy conversation-er. I specifically remember how that turned me and Jo off. Now I miss him a lot and would do anything to see that mug again.
Have you ever thought somebody was plain-looking, but found them attractive once you got to know them better? What specifically about them made them so beautiful? It’s happened here and there. A common trait of them all is that they’re all very good speakers and are able to speak their mind eloquently and intelligently, especially when standing up for their opinion or beliefs.
What is your #1 dealbreaker with friendships? (Why you wouldn't be friends) Betrayal of trust.
Who is your favorite character on Bob's Burgers and why? (If you watch it) I don’t watch it.
What songs do you never get tired of? Paramore’s ;)
Have you ever had a retro celebrity crush? Like a crush on an "old" celebrity who was most famous a long time ago or is long dead? Lol yes, a bunch of them...anyone who’s followed me for a while would know. I’m really into Audrey Hepburn, Vivien Leigh, Grace Kelly, Joan Crawford, Olivia de Havilland, Greta Garbo, Cary Grant, and Gregory Peck.
Before buying something in a store, do you look online to see if you can get it cheaper there? Not usually. I don’t shop online, so.
What type of things do you prefer to purchase online? It’s not a question of the type of thing I’m buying, but if I’m purchasing something online it’s largely because I don’t have anyone to buy it with at a physical store at the moment, and I hate going to the mall by myself.
Are you interested in fashion? Not so much. I keep up with the trends in my age group and like being updated with new shoe lines from my favorite brands and such, but I don’t watch fashion shows or know the name of all models.
Do you prefer beef or chicken tacos? I don’t really like tacos, period. I don’t even know what’s the standard meat in them...I guess I’ll go with beef, I know I love them in my burritos.
Have you ever tried fish tacos? How were they? I haven’t. I dunno how to feel about it honestly; my Filipino palate’s only ever had fish in stews, with rice, or in sushi. But I know it’s popular in other parts of the world so I guess fish tacos are good too.
Have you ever worn leather (or imitation leather) pants? No. That sounds highly uncomfortable, and I’m just reminded of that episode of Friends where Ross wore leather pants as part of his new year’s resolution lol.
What part of your body seems to get cold the most? I normally don’t feel cold in certain parts of my body. If I’m cold, my entire body is.
What do you like better, pants or shorts? Shorts. Pants are only nice if they’re high-waisted mom jeans, but in this climate I mostly find them uncomfortable covering my entire legs.
Have you ever wished you had a different eye color? Sometimes, but through the years I’ve learned to embrace my dark brown eyes.
Do you know anybody with two different colored eyes? Yes.
