Oh man does this scene hit different after Inquisition.

Varric is realizing that he miscalculated his audience and did his job too well: he just wanted to tell enough of the truth of Hawke’s story to get them off the hook for causing the war. But he underestimated just how desperate Cassandra is.

“I wish I could help you.” He’s not saying he doesn’t know where Hawke is (because we know now that he does!). What he actually means and is carefully stepping around saying, is that he’s won’t help. He wants to, he’s feeling guilty and worried, but this is the one thing he won’t give. Because damn the world, Varric is not going to be the one to pull his friend back into trouble.
