PSA: Back up your blog, check your tumblr e-mail for copyright strikes

Hi everyone, after suddenly losing my account with main blog + sideblogs last week, I would like to share the following warning with y'all. Not to scare you even though it is shitty, but to raise awareness. If this somehow results in me getting kicked off the platform again, so be it lol.

If you post anything fandom* related on your tumblr blog**, whether that's gifs, screenshots, videos, cosplay pics or even fics (?), you may risk getting a copyright strike (up to 3 in 18 months) or even immediate account termination. The chance is still rather small, but just know that it can happen.

*I say fandom in the broad term, so blogs that post about movies and series, anime/manga, games, celebrities, models, sports/olympics, etc. and it goes for gif and fic creators too. Not just accounts that post music or videos for example.

**I say tumblr blog, but this goes for all of the internet ofc. People have been getting this problem on any platform, from insta to etsy, youtube and twitter.

Disclaimer: I am no legal expert, just an unlucky blogger who lost her silly multifandom fic blog after 7+ years.

This will be a bit long and detailed so I proceed under the cut!

What can you do?

...To make sure you don't suddenly lose days, months, and years of content:

CHECK THE EMAIL LINKED TO YOUR TUMBLR. I know a lot of people don't do it, myself included. Tumblr does send warnings (though not always). It wouldn't have changed anything for me because I wouldn't want to appeal - since I don't want to go into this "fair use" discussion for just a fic & editing blog. I personally don't know the chances of retrieving your blog if you protest against the claims, so can't say much about that.

Back up your Tumblr blog if you can. Also save your Tumblr chats with people dear to you if you can. Account termination seems to work differently than deactivation. I was still able to see chats with people who deactivated long ago. But my blog that got terminated has vanished from everyone's DMs and ask boxes à la Thanos snap. I mourn my years of Tumblr chat with my best friend. It was not as if we even considered exporting/copying it just for the memories of the start of our friendship. But now that it's entirely gone, hehe, well. It is sad.

Save URLs and masterposts outside Tumblr. After losing your account, for I thiiink about 24-48hrs (I didn't clock, but it was temporary) you will be able to access it at least temporarily through cachedpages, if you have the URL. It doesn't seem to work for everything, but most of my Tumblr posts I could still see shortly through this site, even after I got wiped off the platform. I did this by googling my tumblr username + certain keywords, and the posts would pop up and give me the URL.

...To prevent getting copyright strikes and losing your account?

Probably nothing - but like I said, I'm not the expert, just the fool who lost her account. The termination e-mail will give you a numbered URL so it's not easy to see which post resulted in the account loss, but for me the keywords were:

Despite the 7+ years of posts, many followers and a lot of memories, I did not gain anything else from this blog and didn't think it was worth the (legal-) risks and effort to try and get it back. It would require filing an objection against the copyright claims with personal info from home address to name, and consenting to USA legal law stuff.

Even if I don't know the exact details, I'm sure they're not wrong, because whether it's fair or not, most fandom stuff has copyright issues in the end, so I can't protest against the claims with 100% certainty it won't get me in real trouble. Besides, I read about similar cases, lost cases, and admitted defeat right away.

They work with manual reports and most dangerously, bots, who seem to be randomly picking unlucky people to take down their posts and possibly the entire account.

So besides putting an entire halt to fic writing, gif making, video editing and other fandom indulgement, or the inconvenient act of censoring every single word and image, I don't think there is a way to entirely prevent getting targeted.

The one that treated me to the strikes leading to account termination was a certain Mr. Green who seems to have targeted mostly people on Etsy. But apparently now also on Tumblr. More about this I can share here for further information. I also share some other links that can inform you about how far the copyright problem can go. Again, no reason to panic. It's rare and I was unlucky. But it happens.

About Mr. Green, using bots all over the internet to take down fandom related material:

Tumblr post about his attack on fandom.

Long detailed doc from an Etsy user.

Insta post about also loss of Etsy account.

Also Etsy related, but same Mr. Green and his bots taking down something only because it used the NAME of an anime character.

Tweet about him and his company not being officially contracted but getting compensated.

About copyright claims on Tumblr - they are still rare, no panic, I just call it russian roulette and these are all unlucky people like me :')

Virtual spaces in a grid

Drawing about theme of virtual space. Such a grid. Which often you can see as a theme for wallpaper. If to surf net. So, it is a typical image, it is connected with aesthetic of retro wave. And everything that is similar, like 8 bit, virtual space, retro wave. And it is now a moment for me to create something like this, image with space made of grid. I was all the time impressed how other can do this.

And this is my drawing about the same theme. Two pictures. One is made in palette with parameters CGA RGB Color OFF, and second is made with palette from Nes 8 bit.

Let’s move to grid CGA. At first. We have here a space. With clouds and stars. It is simply space. Dreams in retro clouds. Flight amongst the clouds. Retro. And not to be lost here - there is a grid here. For navigation in this space. It is more simple space. You can test flight here. Or just walk. There is no gravity here.

And now let’s move to space Nes 8 bit. It is a filed. With chamomile or sunflowers. 8 bit flowers and grass. So here it is going a raining. Which is giving water to little flowers. It is already more made retro 8 bit space. It exists with more length in time. And it is updated with objects. So, here it is gravity. And already plants are growing. Clouds are making a rain. And you can have a walk into this 8 bit field.

Maybe to remember your country house memories. As you play 8 bit Nes videogames at the country house. For example. Or some another system. Watched VHS videotapes. Moment of nostalgia about 80s. 8 bit field is calling you to run here. And get yourself under the rain. And with a fun to run back to your house.

Grass is such green and so familiar, which you can see in the field. Chamomile and sunflowers also are well known for you. Even form of clouds, looks like, is taken from 8 bit games from cartridges. From some kind Adventure Island. But, well, no, not out of this game. Grass will grow. And maybe even birds will fly and a little house to appear.

Is Meghan Markle Getting Back Into Blogging?

After six long years, famed blogger Meghan Markle may finally be resurrecting her defunct lifestyle site, the Tig. Markle pulled the plug on her “passion project” in 2017, shortly before becoming engaged to her partner in crimes of corniness, Prince Harry. But now? Now she may be bringing back her beloved Tig: According to the Mirror and the New York Post, Markle has filed with the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office to launch a “revamped” version of the site — covering “food, cooking, recipes, travel, relationships, fashion, style, interior design, lifestyle, the arts, culture, design, conscious living, health and wellness” — as soon as next week.

A natural next question for you to ask at this juncture would be: What is a Tig? Debuted in 2014, Markle’s Tig took its name from Tignanello, the wine that finally allowed her to “get” wine and thus became her shorthand for the feeling of suddenly understanding something. Thus her site was devoted to “those Tig moments of discovery,” if that makes sense to you, and also to topics like her dog, cooking, fashion, avocado toast, books and her “badass reading list,” personal revelations, self-love — the list goes on. Here’s her 2015 entry on Valentine’s Day, via Cosmo, to give you a feel for the genre:

This Valentine’s Day, I will be with friends, running amock [sic] through the streets of New York, likely imbibing some cocktail that’s oddly pink, and jumping over icy mounds in my new shoes through the salted snowy streets of the West Village. But those shoes, by the way, were my gift to myself. Why not give us tips about how to host a children’s birthday party that doubles as a “proxy war” in the ongoing beef with your in-laws? Why not tell us how to deal when your husband tells millions of readers around the world about his frozen penis? Live laugh love, girl! Live laugh love.

Meghan didn't mention Chef Cory, her live-in partner, in this blog post.

Florida Sen. Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary) wants bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and other members of the Florida executive cabinet or legislature to register with the state or face fines. Brodeur’s proposal, Senate Bill 1316: Information Dissemination, would require any blogger writing about government officials to register with the Florida Office of Legislative Services or the Commission on Ethics.

In the bill, Brodeur wrote that those who write “an article, a story, or a series of stories,” about “the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, a Cabinet officer, or any member of the Legislature,” and receives or will receive payment for doing so, must register with state offices within five days after the publication of an article that mentions an elected state official.

If another blog post is added to a blog, the blogger would then be required to submit monthly reports on the 10th of each month with the appropriate state office. They would not have to submit a report on months when no content is published.

For blog posts that “concern an elected member of the legislature” or “an officer of the executive branch,” monthly reports must disclose the amount of compensation received for the coverage, rounded to the nearest $10 value. If compensation is paid for a series of posts or for a specific amount of time, the blogger would be required to disclose the total amount to be received, upon publication of the first post in said series or timeframe. Additional compensation must be disclosed later on.

Failure to file these disclosures or register with state officials, if the bill passes, would lead to daily fines for the bloggers, with a maximum amount per report, not per writer, of $2,500. The per-day fine is $25 per report for each day it’s late.

The bill also requires that bloggers file notices of failure to file a timely report the same way that lobbyists file their disclosures and reports on assessed fines. Fines must be paid within 30 days of payment notice, unless an appeal is filed with the appropriate office. Fine payments must be deposited into the Legislative Lobbyist Registration Trust Fund if it concerns an elected member of the legislature.

For writing about members of the executive branch, fines would be made payable to the Executive Branch Lobby Registration Trust Fund or, if it concerns both groups, the fine may be paid to both related trust funds in equal amounts.

Explicitly, the blogger rule would not apply to newspapers or similar publications, under Brodeur’s proposed legislation.

In additional to the blogger regulations, the bill also removes provisions of state statutes to require judicial notices of sales to be published on publicly accessible websites, and specifies that a government agency can publish legally required advertisements and public notices on county sites if the cost is not paid by or recovered from an individual.

Should the bill pass, it would take effect immediately upon approval.

Do you always repeat your messages? �� (sorry couldn't resist)

Well it's already passed midnight here, so already Tuesday. Anyway my recap of last week is not about Ratingen or a reunion. Not even about any suggestions of Cinderella being linked to him in a city so little visited.... as if that was any news he was there for those days. If anyone would have taken a look at the timelines I post regularly anybody could have seen he was in London. Busy days, spotted about every day, and all the time no Cinderella in sight... (nor a Cait).

My 'Outakes news' would be more about these bloggers all seems to watch this space quite closely. Any side, minions rushing out to tell how I just posted about the running video being posted on 8 March so Pinnuendo (yes that's the category name I file this under) could be created. On the other side, the posts I file under Shinnuendo, how a song and their guts is more proof to them than a video or pics showing where the Captain is really at and what he is doing.

The most intriguing thing is how they all carefully try to avoid calling my blogger name! From blackening out to inventing the most hilarious names and descriptions. I've yet to decide on which name would take the cake. they've come up with so many... it's hard to make a choice. And oh, even more intriguing, they tell their followers, if they follow me, they will be blocked! Yet, surprisingly they don't block me themselves... now why would that be 🤔 Anybody having thoughts about that?

Evelyn 10/7/23

Evelyn and I got dinner together last night to try to help me take my mind off of what's going on in my apartment. She asked me about my program, and I told her I’ve always been really interested in books. How they’re written, the exact choice of words authors use, the hidden meanings you can get to if you keep digging. I think it’s beautiful when people die but live on in their writing.

“Why are you in the pharmacy program?” I asked her.

“I was a biochem student,” she said. “I wasn’t all that certain what to do with that, and my family told me to go into pharmaceuticals.”

“Is that what you want to do, though?”

“It’s not all that awful. I just keep thinking that in a few years, I’ll be making pretty decent money at some CVS.”

“Why not open your own pharmacy? Like the apothecary down the road?”

“Do you know how hard it is to have your own apothecary shop? Big retail stores are driving them all out of business. The only way that that old man is staying in business is because he has natural remedies, and there’s enough broke college students around him that’ll take that over $40 prescriptions for anti-anxiety meds. But once those college students graduate and start making money and move to big cities—they no longer want the snail serums and the crystals. They want Xanax and Prozac.”

“I heard snail serum is good for your skin. They do it in Korea, apparently.”

“Yeah. It is. Really good.”

“There have to be some people who want natural remedies.”

“Well, there are. There’s all the crunchy mommy bloggers who won’t vaccinate their kids.”

“Yikes.”

“And they’re not the type to go to an apothecary shop anyway. An apothecary shop is, like, three degrees too weird for them. They don’t want the frog oil or the fermented worms. They want to rub crystals on their armpits and put an onion on their kid’s foot when they get measles.”

“And you wouldn’t want to serve them anyway.”

“I don’t want their home schooled kids messing up my shop!”

We started walking back to my apartment (I still pay rent and really have nowhere else to stay, so I'm still living there despite the horrors. And at least with Evelyn there, I feel safer). Evelyn held half of a burrito bowl that she was going to save for breakfast the next morning. I was thinking about buying an aloe plant and how much an aloe plant costs and how hard it is to keep an aloe plant alive.

“I also would have no idea how to start a business like that. And apparently if you want to open an apothecary shop, you have to, like, file all this specific paperwork and get rated every year. And if you’re violating these specific laws, you get fined and the fines are big enough to bankrupt your business.”

“That’s balls,” I said.

“It’s so balls! And then there’s so much politics in the independent apothecary game. Best to leave it alone.”

“Damn. Tell me more.”

And she did. We went back to my apartment, and we talked all night. She told me about her older brothers. I told her about my mother. She told me she’s thinking about shaving her head. I told her I’ve wanted to try going vegetarian if I have the money to support the lifestyle.

We went out in the middle of the night to get ice cream from the gas station around the corner, and we ended up buying armfuls of junk food to go with it.

When we got back, she strung up more crystals around my bed. Midterms are soon, she said. Some good crystals help with mental clarity which makes studying much easier. I asked how she knows so much about crystals and candles and stuff, and she didn’t really give an answer. Her mother had a Wiccan phase when she was a kid.

By two in the morning, we were half-asleep and watching Bob’s Burgers. Again on the couch. Again under the same blanket. She rested a fuzzy-socked foot on my leg. I pressed my thigh against hers.

And that’s it. That’s the update this time. No cats or ghosts or weird clawing at my walls. Just Evelyn.

Short brief when this post is published: I still have my computer with problems and reinstalling Windows myself, because the problem persists and otherwise I would have to pay about $63 just to factory reset it. RSS feeds: what they are and why you should use them

tl;dr: an RSS feed reader allows you to read content from many different websites in one centralized place.

RSS (Really Simple Syndication)

RSS is a standardized format for sharing information online. RSS feeds update whenever new content is released. most news sites have RSS feeds - though what information is pushed to the feed looks different for each site (more on this later). Blogger, Wordpress, and Tumblr also support RSS feeds, so blogs using those hosts also have them. RSS format has been around since 2000, so it's had lots of time for widespread adoption. some websites use a newer (newer meaning 2005) format called Atom, and many RSS feed readers also support Atom feeds.

rss feeds might be useful to you if you are tired of:

having to check 1000 different sites for all the content you want to see

using some ad-filled news aggregator app to access said content or

ads in general.

there are many different rss feed readers, and many are open source and free. personally i use feedbro, which is an extension for firefox and chrome, but there are also feed reader applications (i've heard RSSowl is good.)

what does an RSS feed look like?

so an actual RSS feed, as published by a website, is just an XML file. (if you know what XML is - cool, if not - don't worry about it.)

above is a screenshot of the RSS feed for my blog. btw, your blog already has an RSS feed. you can't opt in or opt out, it's essential to how tumblr works. it's just your blog url slash rss. here's the link to mine: https://oakfern.tumblr.com/rss.

the RSS feed reader i use, feedbro, is a firefox extension. to access new articles, i click on the extension button and then click "Open Feed Reader".

here's what the feed reader looks like open. in the left sidebar you can see my folders - i like feedbro because it allows me to group feeds together.

here's the articles in my "local news" feed.

and here's what it looks like when i click into one of the articles. when i click the headline at the end of the gif, it opened the source in a new tab.

you can add a new RSS feed to feedbro by using the "Find Feeds in Current Tab" option. if feedbro can't find an RSS feed, you can also add it manually.

okay, remember how i said what information sites push is different? PublicSource, as you can see above, pushes their full article including images to the RSS feed.

The Conversation pushes just the headline and the subheading. kinda annoying, but i can still see generally what the article is about and click to get to the source if i want.

it is safe to assume that most paywalled news sources are not going to push entire articles to their RSS feeds. however, aside from that, there’s not really a good way to know which news sites push what content without actually looking at the feed. The Conversation isn’t paywalled - in fact all articles are released under Creative Commons licensing and can be republished with credit. it’s probably just whatever they used to build the site.

anyway, that's all i got. hopefully this is useful to you. and again, RSS is used by most major blogging platforms, so you don't HAVE to use RSS feeds to read news if you don't want. that's just what i use it for. you can easily just use an RSS feed reader to check all your favorite knitting blogs.

In parenthesis are when the rumors/theories first popped up.

Also, I won’t provide links to where these rumors came from as I do not wish to send any abuse towards those bloggers/forums/social media accounts, but:

Most of the rumors that are very specific and detailed, particularly those involving specific dates, tend to come from tarot readers, astrology blogs, and gossip vlogs from YouTube.

Ones that sound wildly far-fetched and over-the-top (or tinhatty) tend to come from very vocal “anti” or “hater” royal watchers on all sides.

Ones that sound more “normal” or generally speculative tend to come from more “neutral” royal watchers and mainstream media/press.

Summary:

Chloe Bourgeois had been aware of her father's corruption for years, and she was determined to stop him. Her own political campaign was picking up steam and everything was perfectly planned. Or it was, until someone else discovered what Andre had been using his power and influence for. Chloe could make it work for her

The story broke early in the morning, dragging Chloe out of bed far too soon after the late night she had. Even though her team had assured her the situation was under control and no one would find out, someone had clearly been wrong. If she was anyone but Chloe Bourgeois, someone making a mistake about a secret might not be that big of a deal, but she was Chloe Bourgeois. She had been keeping the details of her father’s corrupt political career under wraps until she could use it to win the election in a few months and take his place as mayor of Paris. Was it underhanded? Of course, it was politics. Was it also a necessary evil? Yes, absolutely.

Chloe’s entire plan revolved around getting herself into the mayor’s office. If she only removed her father from his position, someone else would take his place, while Andre still pulled the strings. He, and everyone that took orders from him, had to go.

When Chloe arrived at her office, her entire media team was already assembled. All of them looked as tired as she felt, as if they had all rushed here as soon as they got the news.

“How much has been released?” Chloe set her laptop and notes on the table while everyone took their seats. “How did it get out?”

“It seems that one of the interns sent some of the files to the wrong person, and the media got their hands on it. So far, it’s been reported by most major political bloggers, including the Ladyblog. They only got some basic information that confirms the mayor is corrupt, but they don’t know how far it goes.”

Chloe nodded. “It won’t take long for people to start asking questions. What are our options?”

Another person from across the table spun their laptop around. “There are a couple of angles we can take. If you want to continue with the anti-corruption platform we were going to use, we have a press release written denouncing the current mayor and promising an investigation into his actions. If we go with this one, we’ll have to move quickly before anyone else can dig up more information.”

“How long will it take for people to work out that we know more?”

“Not long. A day or two, if we’re lucky. Andre and his government covered their tracks fairly well, but we still managed to stumble upon it. Someone looking in the right places would find it without trouble.” The private investigator she had hired months ago projected some images onto the screen at the front of the room. Different pictures of Andre began popping up, including a few that Chloe had never seen before. The mayor had clearly been having a good time recently. “We’re only a few hours away from the early morning news reports, and blogs can be updated anytime.”

“So, we need to get my statement out there as quickly as possible.” Chloe tapped her fingers on the table, her nails making clicking noises against the wood as she thought her options over. “Go with the anti-corruption angle. We need to get a press conference organised to make sure it gets onto the news.”

“What about your father?” There was silence around the room as Chloe’s team waited for her to react to Andre being referred to as her father.

“If Andre is still following the same schedule he did when I was a teenager, he won’t hear any news until mid-morning. He’s the last thing we have to worry about right now.” Chloe stood up again, adjourning the meeting. She looked over at her media liaison. “Get as many journalists together as you can in the next few hours for the press conference. This may not be the ideal situation for this information to be released, but we need to take this chance while we have it. Inaction will harm our reputation. Thank you all for being here.”

Chloe picked up her laptop and strode out of the room. As she waited for the elevator, she called her hair and makeup team. While she preferred to make public appearances on more than a few hours of sleep, this could be a turning point in their campaign. Andre’s actions were catching up with him, and the promise of an investigation could sway the majority to their side. If they continued to slowly release the information they knew over the coming months, it was unlikely that Andre’s reputation would survive until the election. The more the public found out, the more his chances of re-election dropped. With the right timing, Chloe was basically guaranteed the mayor’s office. She could almost walk right in.

A few hours later, Chloe sat in her office, watching as news articles about her press conference slowly rolled in. As predicted, her father hadn’t done anything about the news. She doubted her had even heard about it yet. It was still barely seven in the morning. He wouldn’t learn about anything for hours.

There was still much to be done. She had another meeting with her team scheduled for the morning to plan the slow release of information about the rest of her father’s corruption. Financial documents would be leaked, secret emails would arrive in journalists’ inboxes, phone call recordings would be posted online, and more press conferences would be held to assure the public that Chloe Bourgeois would get to the bottom of this. Sure, Andre would end up in jail, but what else would he expect after all the tax evasion, bribery, and embezzlement? There were no other options left. He had brought this upon himself.

Chloe sighed. She wished her life had turned out differently, but by the time she was born, the wheels were already in motion. When she found out about all of her father’s crimes at the end of high school, it was far too late to turn back the clock.

An alert dinged on Chloe’s computer. Alya Cesaire had arrived for their meeting. It had been set up so Chloe could double down on her promise to crack down on corruption. Speaking to the blog that had successfully pivoted from reporting on the latest superhero news to additional political reporting, as well as one of the largest blogs in the city, would ensure that as many people are possible saw her promises to fight corruption inside the government. Her entire image was built around being dedicated to doing right by the people of Paris, no matter what, even if it involved locking her own family behind bars in the process.

While Chloe knew that her father wasn’t happy with her running for mayor against him, he hadn’t said anything about it. She didn’t really care. If anything, she was used to it. Andre had never been the most interested parent, happily thinking that following every demand Chloe had meant he was being a good father. Somewhere in the last few years, that willingness to do whatever she asked at the drop of a hat had disappeared.

That meant it was quite a surprise when he stormed into her office at noon that day. His assistant followed behind him, ever dutiful, even as Andre raged. “I tolerated your little campaign for far longer than I should have! I thought it was only a passing fancy, but this,” he gestured to the tablet his assistant was holding and the news articles it displayed, “this has gone far enough!”

“Hello, Andre. I’m glad you found your way here. I wasn’t sure you even knew where my office was.” She wasn’t going to sink to his level. They were both adults, and allowing a conversation to devolve into a shouting match because Andre couldn’t see what was under his nose was a waste of her time. “How can I help you?”

“Stop playing around. I know your campaign is just some teenage rebellion, and I am willing to forgive you.”

“I know you’ve missed a lot of important moments in my life recently, but I’m in my mid-twenties. My rebellious teen years ended years ago. All of the decisions I’ve been making are ones that are the best for me and the best for Paris.”

Andre’s face reddened more and more with each word. Chloe didn’t let it bother her, continuing with her speech. “I know what you’ve been up to. I have all the records of the money you’ve been stealing from the city, all the bribes you’ve been paying to keep people quiet, and all the secret phone calls you’ve been having. If anyone is going to be ending their campaign, it’s going to be you.”

“You don’t know who you’re up against.”

“I do, actually.” Chloe stood up from her desk. “I grew up with you. I know everything you’ve been up to since you were first elected. You don’t know who you’re up against. I think you should leave before you embarrass yourself further.”

“How dare you?” Andre was shouting now, his voice echoing out into the hallway and attracting the attention of the people outside. “You would never last a day in this job! You don’t understand what it takes to be the mayor of Paris!”

“It’s time for you to leave; otherwise, I’ll call security and have you escorted from the building. How much more damage can your reputation take? I don’t mind finding out. What about you?”

“You are not the daughter I raised. I did everything for you, gave you everything that you wanted, yet this is how you repay me? I should have known you would turn out like your mother. An ungrateful brat.”

Chloe left the door ajar and walked back to her desk, pressing the call button on the intercom. The security team answered immediately. “Please send security to my office to remove the mayor from the premises.”

“They’re on their way, Miss Bourgeois.”

“Thank you.”

Chloe and Andre stood in silence as they waited for security. Andre seemed to think he could intimidate her into following his orders, but it wasn’t going to work. Maybe if she was a decade younger, or her father didn’t look like he had aged decades in just a few years, but that wasn’t the case. He wasn’t going to intimidate her.

Two security guards walked into the office. “Mayor Bourgeois, if you could come with us, please.”

“This isn’t the end.”

“No, the end will be when I win the election. Goodbye, Andre.”

Andre and his assistant were escorted out by the guards, Andre still fuming. Chloe could hear cameras clicking outside and could only imagine the work that was going to pile up after this incident. The whole thing only solidified Chloe’s belief that Andre was no longer fit to run Paris and needed to be removed from power at the next election. She pressed the call button on her intercom again. When her assistant answered, Chloe asked, “Please schedule another meeting this afternoon. We need to start releasing more evidence. Thanks.”

Andre was going down. And she was going to be the one to make sure his political career came to an end.

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Florida Sen. Jason Brodeur (R-Lake Mary) wants bloggers who write about Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody, and other members of the Florida executive cabinet or legislature to register with the state or face fines.

Brodeur’s proposal, Senate Bill 1316: Information Dissemination, would require any blogger writing about government officials to register with the Florida Office of Legislative Services or the Commission on Ethics.

If compensation is paid for a series of posts or for a specific amount of time, the blogger would be required to disclose the total amount to be received, upon publication of the first post in said series or timeframe.

Additional compensation must be disclosed later on.

Explicitly, the blogger rule would not apply to newspapers or similar publications, under Brodeur’s proposed legislation.

Should the bill pass, it would take effect immediately upon approval.

Global social media: China

The Great Firewall of China essentially refers to China’s censorship of content on traditional and new media. The Great Firewall acts as a barrier, restricting communication and data exchange much as a real wall would. Internet users in China are unable to access Google, Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, and other international sites, including those belonging to foreign news outlets like the BBC and Reuters (Maags 2019). The situation wasn’t like this prior to Xi Jin Ping’s election as president. Before 2012, the Chinese people reap the benefit from the internet's ability to increase their transparency and empower their communication. Some influential bloggers amassed tens of millions of readers by calling for radical changes in society and politics. Virtual private networks (VPNs) were utilised by Chinese residents to access restricted content online (Bradsher 2012). Citizens gathered online to demand accountability from authorities, filing electronic petitions and planning demonstrations (Economy 2018). Seventy percent of 300 Chinese officials surveyed in 2010 were concerned that their errors or personal information would be made public. So, the question is why did China take censorship to the extreme? To put it bluntly, what are they so afraid of?

Why does China censor everything?

Before any discussion, I would like to mention that censorship does take place in majority of the countries. The press release/ news that we are reading everyday doesn’t have full freedom of speech either. So, my argument presented in this section would be from a neutral stance, seeking to understand the possible reasons of China’s censorship.

The first perspective is that the Chinese government understands that power of social media. Social media has the mobilizing power. Activists, demonstrators, and revolutionaries have frequently utilised social media to mobilise worldwide support for campaigns against a variety of injustices. But just as it is a platform that spreads knowledge and momentum at an unprecedented rate, it also spreads misinformation and conflict (Gilbert 2021). If we look back at the traditional cultural value of China, we will realize that China priorities harmony (Zhang 2013). So, it is understandable that the Chinese government wanting to avoid chaos within the country. The point can be further strengthened by the educational level in China. According to Trip Bitten (2022), only about 240 million Chinese people out of the whole population have received tertiary education. The argument is that tertiary education provides people with critical thinking ability that enables them to discern facts from lies. Even though most Chines did complete the 9 years compulsory education, but they are still susceptible to fake news. In short, we can view censorship as a protective measure from the Chinese government.

The second perspective is ‘tyranny’. The idea is that the Chinese government want to ‘contain’ its people in its own ecosystem to minimize the risk of revolt (online or physical). The strict regulations enacted support this view. The supreme people's court declared in September 2013 that writers of internet articles that purposefully spread rumours or falsehoods and were viewed by more than 5,000 people or shared more than 500 times might face defamation charges and three years in prison (Economy 2018). Besides, there is the social credit system. Under this system, if the Communist Party of China considers a person untrustworthy, the social credit system assigns them a ranking and imposes punishments such as limiting their internet access (slow bandwidth) or preventing them from traveling locally and internationally (Canales 2021). What’s worse is that in recent time stricter rule seems to be considered by the Chinese government. The draft rules posted by the Cyberspace Administration of China in June, which would entail more monitoring of comments that are often overlooked by censors, such as responses to comments and messages shown on the screen while livestreaming (Allen 2022). According to the guidelines, social media sites should also verify all comments before they are published. I am sure those who watch BiliBili know what’s up if this were enacted. Imagine YouTube, but what you write in the comment section are being monitored and restricted. You can argue that this is similar to Twitch’s approach, but knowing China, they would take this a step further by censoring the ‘weirdest’ thing.

So, is it good or bad?

In my opinion, I would say it’s too much oppression from the government. Censoring explicit content is understandable, but ‘sensitive’ issues (which I am referring to controversies, international news) are not okay for me. But in the end, it depends on how an individual views this issue. We will never know the true intention behind what the Chinese government did, but we can have a pretty good guess. Sorry if this is kind of random, but I've always struggled with finding friends in a fandom because I get too nervous about interacting even in small ways and end up keeping all of my fandom stuff secret, like most of my tumblr reblogs are private and I don't tell anyone about my ao3. But I've recently resolved to work on that, so I'm planning on starting over with a new blog and a new ao3 handle and moving all of my fav old content to it and being more interactive going forward. But...old habits die hard, and since you're so so so kind and friendly, and you're one of those ppl who's known in their (corner of a) fandom, like other writers call you by your name and anons send you prompts/theories/feels and people just!! talk to you about your fics and stuff and!!!, I was wondering if maaaaaaybe you could give some pointers on how to "join"/integrate/idk!!! in a fandom? Sorry if this is a really weird or difficult question aaaa, anything even your own experience would be nice but it's ok if you don't want to answer. Hi there, anon!! ❤️ Omg, firstly let me say that while yes this is an unexpected ask, it is also a very welcome ask!! I can't say I've ever been asked something like this before, but I can also say I've perhaps never related to an ask more before!! I 1000% also... identify as... an anxious person (I'm tip-toeing with my wording here bc - while I have always been an anxious/nervous person, especially socially - I've also not been professionally assessed or diagnosed, which is solely my own doing, but I know that can be a dividing line with this topic sooooo I'll just say that... I believe that I can understand at least a little of how you feel) & fandom can be a very intimidating & nerve-wracking place!! Prior to starting this blog, I was only ever on the outskirts or in the background of the fandoms I was interested in -- The Blacklist was the first fandom I made an effort to actively be a part of, so I know how jumping in with little to no experience can be scary!! Also... ever since I hovered on the edge of fandom - peeking in with envious eyes at active bloggers, shippers, & content-creators - I have always wanted to be someone... well, someone exactly like you so kindly described me: someone who's known in their fandom & has a nickname & is even sent asks & I honestly can't believe it happened to me. And while this is by no means the only or best way to experience fandom, it is so gratifying & heart-warming & fulfilling to be so connected amidst a fandom community, especially a relatively small one like TBL!! BUT enough of my blabbering!! I'm probably the last person qualified to be giving the kind of advice you're asking for, but I'm more than happy to share my experience with you, anon, bc I feel like we're very similar people!! So, I'll list some bullet points below (under a cut bc we all know I never use one word when twenty will do lolz) on my thoughts on how to join/integrate in a fandom... if you'll be so kind as to take it all with a sizable grain of salt LOL 🤗

OKAY SO my first tip - bc this is what I remember doing the most in my baby!blog days - is:

Start by engaging with fandom content in whatever small way you feel comfortable with!! And the best way I found to do this?? Is the tags!! Tags are your friends!! That's literally all I did for the first few seasons of TBL after making this blog!! In my mind, the tags are kind of an optional/extra credit situation; you can leave them if you want to AND people can choose to acknowledge them or not. You can use them as a filing system, a place to leave your own thoughts or feelings (me AF lmfao), OR a dropbox for direct praise for the OP, which they will see in their notes!! Therefore, I've always found that to be the perfect, least stressful way of interacting in a fandom. That way, your perspective is there for anyone who chooses to see it, but people have that choice of whether or not to respond or follow you based on what they see. Plus, finding & engaging with the content you like helps you to follow the people who are making the content you like!! And, once you have, & don't be afraid to TELL THEM you like their content!! People love compliments, especially about things they're passionate about!! And I can tell you from personal experience that some of my best fandom friends were made over a love of each other's content!! On that note -

If you feel inspired, don't be afraid to step up & make your own content!! This will ID you as a fellow active fandom member which will attract the people you want to befriend!! Sidenote: this isn't necessarily why I started writing fanfic, but it was a delightful facet of the result!! Before I was a writer in the fandom, I simply reblogged gifsets & text posts by other talented creators & hesitantly - but slowly more enthusiastically - shared my thoughts & feelings!! And by the time I started writing, my blog was Lizzington-themed & familiar to fellow shippers... And when I became something of a content creator in the form of fanfic, that's when I think I really started getting asks, which is a whole other lovely part of fandom!! Of course, it always helps to be friendly & approachable (which you already are, clearly, just based on this sweet ask!!) & to leave your ask box open & your anons on if you're comfortable with that!! So, when you feel ready, be willing to converse & engage with people in comments & replies on your content, bc people want to bond over their favorite things!! And tbh in that way?? Fandom is sort of easier than real life, bc the awkward phase of "finding common ground" is already done!! OH & ON THAT NOTE -

Try to remember that anxiety is your worst enemy, even in fandom space!! Personally, I've always found fandom a place to let go of the anxiety that plagues me more in real life, but of course it's not that simple & anxiety can still be very present in online interactions!! But try to remember that other people want to make fandom friends too!! And reaching out to someone to try & make a friend is 99% of the time NOT going to be a bother to them. If you feel unsure about reaching out (which I often do!!), just picture being on the receiving end of your kind messages & offers of friendship!! Would you ever be annoyed at someone polite or reject someone kind or shun a fellow member of your fandom?? No!! And the odds are that like-minded people won't either!! But worst case?? They just won't answer & that's okay, too, bc you've lost nothing by trying!! 😍🥰❤️

So yeah, I don't know if this is good advice for you, my dear anon, it's literally just my own experience... but I have to say that I'm so proud of you for wanting to work on your fandom shyness!! (NOT that that's a necessity btw!! I'm a firm believer that SHY /DOES NOT/ = BAD!! Shyness is not a trait that needs to be "fixed" or "worked on" & it is not inherently better or worse than being "out-going", regardless of what the rest of the world likes to tell & show us. It is simply a different, equally good way of being that brings an essential variety to the world.) But the difference here is intent. You WANT to change your fandom experience & therefore you're going out of your way to do so, even though it's tough, & that's very brave!!
