This is something that would happen to Hiccup.
Oh yes! Footless Jo! I love her!! Her sense of humor, but willingness to educate at the same time, is fantastic.
(And that would happen to Hiccup right down to how it’s worded.)

Okay guys I have NEVER recommended anything here other than books and hashtag not sponsored BUT. I just got my Nike Go FlyEase shoes and they are a disability GAME CHANGER for me.
Tumblr media
[img desc: a person steps onto an odd looking sneaker which is folded partially in half. the shoe closes around their foot as they step down]
They are a funky little shoe that literally FOLDS in such a manner that they can be put on and off entirely without your hands; you can just step in and out of them.
The history of them is actually very interesting; the FlyEase line was always designed with disability in mind (the first one was inspired by a teenager with cerebral palsy, Matthew Walzer). They've been a thing for years but they never had one that particularly stood out to me amongst other similar shoes... until the Go.
You see, along with being someone who has only a few bends in me per day before it's all over, I'm also a fall risk. Like a comical fall risk. I've fallen into traffic. I will just roll over and die at a moment's notice. And most slide on shoes are unstable and slip around on your foot. This shoe clamps onto me like a goddamn vice. It's Got Me. It's also got good arch support which is like, a plus. By freeing up a bunch of bend-overs per day, this is going to leave me with a lot more ability and energy, especially on the bad days.
They sound too good to be true (I was VERY skeptical buying them despite the video review), but seriously, you can just step into them--and out of them by stepping on that chonky back heel there. God knows I'm not the only person with difficulty sliding on heels or tying laces in the world, so I thought I would be remiss if I didn't recommend them. If you think they might help you out, they probably WOULD, as they were recommended to me by Footless Jo, an amputee YouTuber, and as mentioned, were inspired in part by people with disabilities ranging from cerebral palsy to past strokes.
They're Pricey but ultimately average when it comes to Nice Shoes(tm), the ones I got were $125.

hi—I wanted to ask if the following is an appropriate and respectful way to deal with a character’s injury?
my character c is shot in the shoulder area which results in nerve damage leaving them with permanent paralysis in their arm.
first: would amputation be a reasonable/expected course of action?
and second: c is a shapeshifter and her ability to shapeshift is impacted by her paralysis. is it reasonable for her to want an amputation?
(i’ve read a lot of your posts about upper limb differences, so i would not be giving them any prosthetics, and their disability would remain while shifting. also this is mostly in backstory for the character, not the main plot line of the story, if that’s relevant.)
Hi!
To answer your questions one by one:
"would amputation be a reasonable/expected course of action?"
Expected? No. Reasonable? Possibly ?? (with a question mark).
Before this ask, I have actually never heard of this being done, but I was able to find a medical source discussing this. To quote the relevant part: "[when treating someone with that type of injury, there are] three options: first, ignore the compromised extremity and focus the rehabilitation on improving function in the normal arm; second, perform an above-elbow amputation alone, and third, perform an above-elbow amputation combined with arthrodesis [connecting bones together] of the shoulder." Basically, if the injury is permanent with no improvement in the foreseeable future, then your character could either work on her other arm to do the work for both, or have it amputated above the elbow.
Keep in mind that this refers to complete paralysis of the whole arm, if your character experiences partial paralysis it wouldn't be worth it, I think.
2) "her ability to shapeshift is impacted by her paralysis. is it reasonable for her to want an amputation?"
From the same source as above; "if the flail limb (dominant or not) interferes with the patient’s return to work or the accomplishment of daily life tasks, or if it is a source of frequent infections, amputation seems to be a reasonable option." So if we count shapeshifting as a daily life task or work, then this actual medical literature paper says it's reasonable. And as for the character wanting it herself, I think it's very reasonable too, especially if it makes C's life harder or causes her pain. "Improving quality of life" is the main reason for elective amputations in general.
It's great that she keeps her disability while shapeshifting!
If you're looking to research the emotional/psychological side of choosing an elective amputation, I would recommend some of Footless Jo's videos on YouTube! She has had an elective amputation for a past injury and made several videos about it. Of course, she discusses a lower limb amputation rather than an upper one but I still think it could be a very useful resource for you.
Thank you for your ask, I hope my answer helped a bit!!

hey, do you know any good amputee accounts? its a struggle to find ones cause a lot of our tags are spam bots
Yeah I’ve noticed that here as well unfortunately, spam bots and content that’s well…about us but not for us, so I don’t really have any recommendations for people on tumblr unfortunately.
I can suggest some others from other platforms though, mainly Tik Tok lol.
The Ethical Panda (@ TheEthicalPanda on Tik Tok) - They’re a mutual of mine on Tik Tok who talks about superhero’s and star wars content usually who’s a leg amputee.
Kaze Kitsune (@ KazeKitsune_ on Tik Tok and instagram) - Another of my Tik Tok mutuals, Kaze is an artist and fursuiter who’s only got one leg, as does their main fursona.
Bandit (@ OneLeggedBanditVR on Tik Tok) - A furry VR content creator who’s customised his avatar to have the same amputation as him (above knee). Bandit’s content is most focused on furry fandom and vr stuff.
April Lockhart (spotify) - she’s not active anymore unfortunately but April was an (arm) amputee singer/guitarist back in the 2010’s. Her stuff is mostly covers but she does have a short album of her own still available on Spotify.
Briel Adams-Wheatley (@ no_limbs_ on Tik Tok) - Briel is a quadrilateral amputee who does makeup and general vlog-type content about their life as a trans amputee.
Harmony King (@ FullMetalHarmony on Tik Tok) - Harmony is an amputee cosplayer, and as their handle implies, does a lot of full metal alchemist cosplays, as well as other arm amputee characters.
Footless Jo (@ FootlessJo on Tik Tok) - Jo is a leg amputee and a lot of her content is centred around that, and more recently she’s been talking a lot about active prosthetic options in particular.
I actually had a few other recommendations but I can’t find their accounts now lol.
If you are having trouble finding amputee content creators, I’d also recommend using tags related to “limb difference” as they don’t tend to be filled with quite as much spam in my experience. It’s a much broader term though, so not everyone who uses it is an amputee.

Hey, regarding Bluegle and Eric’s little self-defense lessons—there’s a YouTuber I watch called Footless Jo, and she has a below-the-knee prosthetic, and she does jujitsu specifically without her prosthetic on, so that she can always defend herself regardless of whether her leg is cooperating. And I thought it would be kinda cool if Google did days where he trained with Eric legs-on and some days legs-off, or with different configurations of crutches or prosthetics or mobility devices, cuz ya gotta cover all your bases.
that is really cool. I suppose since Eric is missing both legs below the knee that would be self-defense from a seated position? maybe I can look into that
here's a sneak peek from later in the story since people have been interested, although I still don't know if I can finish the story:
“I'll kill you if you ever tell anyone this,” Google whispers, tucking his hair behind his ears and trying to stimulate breathing steadily. “I'll show you trepanation up close and personal.”
Ippy just laughs. His hands are warm on Google's kneeplates. “Okay,” he says. “Tell me anyway.”
He means to say something like, “I'm having a cognitive malfunction” or “my emotional processor is out of control,” or “yesterday I looked at a stupid Francisco Goya painting and decided that I hated it, that it was revolting and awful and I didn't want to see it again, and how can that be when I was made to know but never to understand?”
But what comes out is just fear.
And he says, “Edward, do you think the darkness would get rid of me if I stopped being useful?”
The clock on Iplier's desk ticks softly by. The air conditioner kicks on in the next room over and cool air filters down through the vents. The stress ball under Google's fingers has burst, and he just sits, and waits, for Iplier to speak.
He has dark eyes and a kind mouth. He's grown his beard out heavier than Mark's and he's wearing his lab coat even though there's no one to see right now but his friend.
“I don't know,” he says finally, reaching out to adjust the glasses fallen down on Google's nose.
They've never lied to each other once in their lives. Not on purpose, anyway.
“I don't know if he would throw you out.”
They sit together for a long time yet.
“But I wouldn't,” adds Iplier gently. “No, shut up, let me be here, okay? I wouldn't throw you out, Google. So you focus on figuring this out. On finding out who you want to be. And I'll be right here when you need me. Okay, buddy?”
Google sighs. “Don't call me buddy.”
Iplier ruffles his hair and makes him growl. The doctor laughs and Google manages not to smile, reaching out to shove gently at Iplier's chest, where his human heart beats fragile beneath twelve pairs of thin white ribs.
“Everything's going to be okay,” says Ippy, and Google, in an act that he knows is pure human, chooses to believe him.
