Shi Qingxuan had a pair of blinged out designer cat ears and a slinky dress because they're a really supportive friend but didn't totally follow Xie Lian's explanation that a furry convention was slightly different from a themed costume party.
You're 1000000% correct and please forgive me for springboarding off of this to peddle some hyperspecific bad furry au headcanons:
Sqx: as you said, doesn't really understand what a furry is or what they do. Despite that, has a toyhouse account with thousands of followers on it that her brother made for her. He only has one oc on it, which is an extremely expensive Dainty that his brother bought for him. Otherwise uses the site forums like a social media platform, but doesn't know how to navigate any other part of it (this is understandable if you're familiar with toyhouse). Somehow gained tons of friends and followers anyway, including
hx: her sona is an eel. He lurks the forums exclusively to report drama to hua cheng, who faithfully mass reports and harasses any user who talks badly about disgraced furry xie lian. She's a partial fursuiter (only has the head and paws (fins?)) because even though she made her own suit, hua cheng gave her the stipend to get the materials and he only allotted enough for a bare minimum partial. Yes, he has fucked sqx while wearing his fursuit, and she was really into it.
hua cheng: full fursuiter with 2 suits (San Lang and Hua Cheng) as stated before. He also has custom tailored robes to fit over his suits because he's dapper like that. Obsessively monitors every furry site across the internet to take down anyone spreading rumors about xie lian by using his thousands of sock puppet accounts. Spends more time in his suits than out of them, doesn't even show xie lian his real face until they meet again at Ghost City Furcon together. Full time simp, part time artist/fursuit maker/con owner. Xie Lian talked him down from a suicide attempt after seeing him make a concerning post on a forum, and hua cheng has been gone ever since. Had a bad phase in high school where he exclusively drew xie lian's sona, including one particularly embarrassing self insert NSFW piece of him.
xie lian: full fursuiter BUT regularly takes off his suit head in public for any reason (note: for furries this is considered really weird and somewhat taboo). I've already talked about him quite a bit so I'll keep it brief, but he was blacklisted from the All Furries Go to Heaven Furcon twice despite being a very involved volunteer in the early days of the con. Despite this, somehow in the year 20XX an unknowing green volunteer finds his old artist alley application shoved in a drawer somewhere and calls him up to attend the con again for the first time in decades.
Feng xin and mu qing: THEY DONT HAVE THE SAME FURSUIT OK! Just because they accidentally commissioned the same maker and their suits are like color swapped versions of each other doesn't mean they wanted to match at all in fact mq's sona is a cat and fx's is a dog but the maker they hired makes their dog and cat suits look pretty much the same so that's how it turned out that way and

I like the idea of Xie Lian as a vampire in modern times, and Hua Cheng as his immortal bonded protector. This goes with OG Dracula/Discworld vampire rules where vampires are able to go out in the sun, they are just weaker during the day.
Everyone thinks Hua Cheng is the vampire because he's a goth fashionista while Xie Lian always looks like he got his clothing exclusively at old people's yard sales. People stupid enough to try anything with them are constantly surprised they picked a fight with the wrong guy.

I commissioned @la_peste_mojo to create 3d renderings of the Hua Cheng and Xie Lian pins from my danmei-inspired pin set! I absolutely love how the renderings turned out.
You can get these pins for real by backing the Kickstarter!
The rest of the designs are shown below. There is Kickstarter-exclusive extremely discounted pricing for ordering full sets of the houseplant series, the weapon series, or all pins.

I see vampire!Hua Cheng a lot and like. I get it. It makes sense. Aesthetically, it works. But that doesn't mean I agree.
The whole theme for vampires is taking. And for Xie Lian, Hua Cheng does nothing but give. Literally. Their spiritual energy transfers are kind of the opposite of how vampires work.
So instead, I raise you vampire!Xie Lian. He's a vampire who never drinks from humans, and would rather let himself starve. He exclusively drinks animal blood, even if it tastes bad, even if it's stale. He's terrified of hurting someone.
And he meets human Hua Cheng. And at some point they're in a situation™ together, and Xie Lian hasn't gotten his hands on animal blood in days. He's clearly not doing well. Hua Cheng knows he will protest, but he also can't see him like this. So, without saying a word, he draws a cut across his hand and holds it up to Xie Lian's lips.

yknow there's a lot of symbolism in xie lian's first mission being Yu Jun mountain and how pei ming+xuan ji's relationship is a foil to hualian's, but maybe there's also some stuff to be said about a bitter, angry ghost who exclusively targets her happy peers and turns them into her undead minions. all her victims lined up in a row, all wearing wedding dresses, all wearing veils. can you even tell them apart? their only sin was being happy with their lives. what did it earn her to ruin them

Reposting this with tags this time, because my interest in bringing this plot to life hasn’t faded yet and I’m still thinking about it quite a lot.
While my ongoing fics are still too much of a mountain for me to climb right now, would anyone be interested in a Hualian fic based off of those abandoned building exploration videos? Not a long fic, likely no more than 4 chapters. It's been in my notes for a while now. I started watching those videos again and it keeps inspiring me. This also isn’t the only plot I’ve thought up while watching these YouTubers, so you may see my other plot in the future.
The premise is this:
Shi Qingxuan is the creator of a YouTube channel where they, (and He Xuan, who was dragged into this, but doesn't really have any complaints…… not like he'll say that out loud though.) explore abandoned structures throughout the country, and even the globe.
Shi Qingxuan's thrill seeking takes them and He Xuan back near their home and friends. Seeing this chance as both an exclusive video, and a fun time with friends, Shi Qingxuan invites Xie Lian along! To make up for the disappointment of their brother declining the invite, Feng Xin and Mu Qing tag along too, though it's less about fun and more about keeping Xie Lian safe and out of any trouble that may be caused by trespassing onto private property.
To Shi Qingxuan, though, their reason for coming matters not. The location is a couple hours away, so they all buckle up for the road trip ahead of them. it's not until they're in the car, however, that Shi Qingxuan spills the details of their next video location. A Hospital.
Xie Lian never did like hospitals… or anything medical for that matter. But, despite the worries from his two childhood friends, he decides it would be a shame to miss out and disappoint Qingxuan.
What he did not know, though, is that maybe there was more in store for him than he thought. He would come to find that in that quiet, empty hospital, was a Ghost who wished to seek help from him.

This is such a random question, but do you ever have characters where you automatically call them by their nicknames as opposed to their proper, more commonly used, first name?
For example, I am nearly incapable of calling William James Moriarty ‘William’ and nearly exclusively call him ‘Liam’ (which has created a lot of confusion amongst my friends who have only started the show-).
This phenomenon probably happens more with donghua and manhua characters, as they tend to have more canon nicknames and/or courtesy names than anime/manga characters (at least in my experience). Idk, I just thought it was something kinda funny! 😅
It's amazing that you asked this: I've literally been thinking about making a post about it! Because here I am obsessed with two series (Moriarty the Patriot and Heaven Official's Blessing) which feature this similar thing where a main character has a nickname only used by their love interest (William/Liam and Hua Cheng/San Lang). And yet, for some reason, I constantly call William Liam but I always call Hua Cheng Hua Cheng.
What's up with that? I can't really explain it. Which is...kinda why I hadn't made that post yet, because I don't know what my point is lmao. Sometimes the nickname is who they become in my mind, sometimes it's not.
I think with Liam especially, there's this extra layer of "William" being a name he will forever associate with his crimes, so I always headcanon that the nicknames his loved ones give him are super meaningful for being things that are his own and separate from that. So maybe that's why Liam sticks more for him in my mind. Whereas with Hua Cheng, basically all of his names have meanings tied back to Xie Lian somehow, so like ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I guess I tend to think of Hua Cheng as the whole that encompasses all the little parts he plays, so I default to that. Or something lol.

assuming the timeline of tcgf takes place in the zhou dynasty and beyond, xie lian would’ve been educated in the six arts (bc the six arts was established in the zhou dynasty.)
the six arts include (also addressed in mdzs, iirc): rites, music, archery, calligraphy, chariotry and mathematics.
we already known xie lian excels in calligraphy, and given feng xin's dexterity with his bow, it probably isn't too hard of a stretch to say that xie lian also received training in archery even if he heavily favours the sword. i believe rites refer to taoist rituals, because the six arts stemmed from confucianism. (confucianism ≠ taoism, but both follow the tao (道).) anyway, xie lian is a taoist priest/ cultivation is a concept stemmed from taoism, so he'd naturally be competent in the rites of taoism. we'll assume he's decently skilled in chariotry and mathematics.
so that just leaves music.
here's the thing: the guqin was almost exclusively played scholars, generals, nobility, etc, by men of rank, prestige and privilege.
xie lian is royalty so there's a high chance he could play the guqin, and who else in the mxtx universe is also incredibly adept at playing it? lan wangji.
xie lian x lan wangji guqin duets with hua cheng and wei wuxian as their audience. (or consider, wei wuxian joins in with chenqing and hua cheng has an internal breakdown in an attempt to read the scores they're using.)

MXTX Mains as Asanine Shit I've Said
Shen Yuan: I'm writing my own eulogy because I can't trust any of you to do it right.
Luo Binghe: I tripped three times this morning and spilt my coffee and I haven't even started my day. I did not choose violence, violence choose me.
Wei Wuxian: Guess what I did? You'll be disappointed, but you know me well enough by now than to be surprised.
Lan Wangji: I've decided that this whole situation is a waste of my time and patience, of which, I already have so little.
Xie Lian: Everyone hates each other here so I don't have to worry about making everyone like me. It's kind of relaxing in it's own way.
Hua Cheng: Everything I do, I do out of love...or spite...those two are not mutually exclusive.

🐰 20+, literate~novella, discord only
I am currently seeking plots for MDZS and TGCF.
For MDZS, I would like to write for Wei Wuxian, and I am willing to write him against most canon characters. {Though I am exclusively looking for romance-focused storylines at this time!} I’d love a Lan Wangji or Jiang Cheng, but I am open to others as well.
For TGCF, I would love a Hua Cheng for my Xie Lian.
I would prefer to do an AU of some sort, but I can be convinced to try canon divergent plots as well. I would like to include NSFW content, but besides that, I’m very flexible and open to anything. Ideally, I’d love to plot something out together, and would also love to share art/inspiration and talk about the series as well!
interact if interested, and I’ll reach out to you!

People on twitter and tiktok once again on tgcf manhua because “hua cheng is canonically a beanpole and xie lian a buff Dorito”
they're allowed to not like the depiction if they want but it's so funny when tgcftwt and tgcf tiktok claim to tout canon when they happily ignore it for headcanons because that's what it is at most, a headcanon. you're not superior for liking one over the other.
hua cheng at most is described as slender but he's not canonically lanky. there is also a suggestion that he is built in some way when he's described as being hard from top to bottom. so, like, the basic ideal male build that you commonly see in a lot of CN media where it's not too much or too little of anything.
as for xie lian, there's nothing to suggest that xie lian is buff or not within the canon novel. you're pretty much free to speculate but i do think it leans more on him being lean or having the same build as hc. you have to keep in mind the genre of media that he's in and what are chinese aesthetics when it comes to BL.
maybe xie lian does have some muscles in some way, he's probably lean and androgynous enough that he's able to convincingly crossdress as a woman.
canonically, he has a small enough waist to fit into a woman's bridal clothes but his shoulders are wider than a petite woman because he still has a figure of a man. sqx also forgot that he was also a martial god until he saw xie lian fight with a sword. he's been described as being a little skinny by female ghosts.
Tumblr media
and a buff bodybuilder didn't believe that someone who looks tender and delicate like xie lian would be able to compete with him. so canonically to me, xie lian does not outwardly look to be physically overly muscular in any way and passes off as lean or skinny.
that's the extent of it. i know a lot of stans act holier-than-thou about skinny/twink depictions of xie lian and act like it's an invention of the manhua artist but it's funny how that they never confront the fact that he's never ever been depicted as being buff in any derivative of the novel, even the official illustrations from pinsin do not depict him as such. it's not exclusive to the manhua.
we can even see from the design of LQQ in the donghua - he's a martial god but he looks incredibly young and probably the most twig-like in the cast. it really shows that in both adaptations - being a martial god does not automatically correlate to being actually buff within the xianxia genre.

Hi....Are there themes about self worth in all of MXTX works? Do you think there are similarities or differences between the characters of MDZS, TGCF and SVSSS? Sorry if you've answered this question before......
oh, I'd say so. to both questions, but I'm going to focus on the former since the latter is a subject that I feel like someone could write a book about.
the thing about MXTX is that she has very definite Things She Is Interested In and she's not particularly subtle about it. all three of her novels feature a protagonist who is, for one reason or another, either convinced they're unlovable (Luo Binghe, to a certain extent Wei Wuxian), or resigned to a certain loneliness and distance between them and other people (Xie Lian).
though I think the interesting thing in TGCF is the fact that the character who most fits that "convinced they're unlovable" is actually Hua Cheng, not Xie Lian; Hua Cheng definitely, obviously has issues with believing himself monstrous and ugly (partly because he grew up with people telling him he was monstrous and ugly) and therefore unworthy of his beloved.
even looking at Shen Qingqiu, though; the level of self-doubt and self-deprecation Shen Yuan expresses in text is pretty high, even if a lot of the time it's couched in humor. in one way or another, MXTX also writes outcasts, people on the fringes in one way or another. (Arguably Shen Qingqiu doesn't fit this mold, but the original Shen Qingqiu certainly does, and so does Luo Binghe. Even Lan Wangji stands in isolation from society at large, though his seems to be at least in part by choice.)
I think there's a particular fantasy, among others, that all of this is leaning into, more than it's specifically saying something "about" self-worth or self-esteem. while I think the outsider/outcast themes that keep cropping up do have a larger thematic importance, I think the recurring self-worth issues are mostly part of the fantasy of the unconditional lover: the person who will do anything and everything for you, utterly devoted no matter what, who loves you even as your worst self, and so on. it's a classic romance trope, and it can be made more powerful when the love interest's judgment differs from the other person's: it's the fantasy of someone else being able to love you even if you struggle to love yourself. while it's certainly not exclusive to MXTX - like I said, classic romance trope - I do see it pretty starkly in all of her work.
