also another note: if you speak spanish and french, for example, a lot of people will speak french with the spanish accent on certain words, or vice versa: whichever you know better. if your tongue is used to pronouncing a word that looks exactly the same a certain way, it’s easy to forget to switch accents.

maybe the character understands Mandarin, but can’t speak it for the life of them. knowing a language isn’t always having every base down! a lot of the time, especially if it’s not your first language, you tend to be stronger in certain areas: understanding, reading, writing, speaking.

I don’t see people do this often. or at all. unless it’s expressed, or they give up speaking in their weak language and convert entirely to their stronger one. there’s no switching back and forth, half sentences in each language.

I do this. personally. I know a bunch of languages—english, french, mandarin, spanish—and when I’m writing, or occasionally speaking, in a weaker language, sometimes I will mix them up in the middle of the phrase. this is more for writing, and speaking I can usually manage. I have turned in more than one fremanglish test. (also when I’m speaking, I’m more likely to call my spanish teacher 老师 instead of señora, rather than switch languages completely)

freaking grammar again. it was on the list, but french grammar is KILLER and it confuses me so much in english. chinese grammar is almost nonexistent, as far as I know.

jokes! they don’t translate well. my science teacher made a joke about a poisson pané and no one laughed.

slang. you don’t often run around speaking how you do at school. (something that confused other language speakers, I found is that “what’s up” is used to say “hello”, and the speaker doesn’t usually truly mean it)

swear words often convert back to their mother tongue

Disney Requests REview : The Aristocats

Requested by @goodanswerfoxmonster ,Im gonna talk about the Aristocats .This one is actually a childhood favorite of both of us ,and he wanted to know what I think of the movie as an adult .It is true this was a favorite of mine as a youngster,its definately the 70's Disney film I latched onto the most .As I got older I have found it has people who dismiss it or straight up dont like it ,however.....I still like it,despite completely getting why people wouldnt latch onto it

This 1970 film follows Duchess (Eva Gabor ) a mother cat with three kittens ,all set to inherit a large fortune from their owner the former opera singer  Madame Adelaide Bonfamille (Hermoine Baddley ),when they are kidnapped and abandoned in the French country side by the butler Edgar (Roddy Maude-Roxby ) ,who seeks the fortune himself ,so the cats gain the help of a street wise alley cat Thomas O'Malley (Phil Harris ) who guides them on their way back to Paris

So lets start with what doesnt work,I feel for Edgar too much .See EDgar is a good loyal butler,and only turns on the cats cause he is afraid they will outlive him.Its not like he hates the cats or wants to kill them ,he is just a desperate guy ,and while I love our heroes ,I'm sorry but I get Edgars motive.SEe if the will said he'd have to take care of the cats to get the money and he didnt want to ,that would be one thing but no ,the cats are inheriting FIRST and he only gets the money after they die .I think what they needed to do was make him MORE resentful or MORE greedy .I ve seen some of the early stuff about Edgar which emphisize him as a manipulator and a greedy monster ,and wish they went that direction (Also originally he was going to be played by Boris Karloff and Elsa Lanchester was going to play a maid with a crush on him ,wouldnt that have been fun ,have a Frankenstein reunion ) .I also just think as an antagonist hes just bad ,hes got his funny momrnt but there is just no menace

That said I like the rest of the movie .This film is low stakes so it is a pretty light and fun watch ,got a chill vibe to it . I like the wacky side characters especially a energetic yet very elderly lawyer George (Played by legendary character actor Charles Lane ) and the drunkengoose Uncle Waldo (Played by Disney veteren Bill Thompson in his final role ) .There are two funny chase sequences involving Edgar and two dogs voiced by Pat Butram and George Lindsey ,that are highlights of the film .My absolute favorite scene however is when we meet Scat Cat voiced by the legendary Scatman Crothers who treats us to the ver underrated "Everybody Wants To Be A Cat ",its a hell of a fun show stopper and best part of the film

I also really adore our two leads ,Eva Gabor and Phil Harris deliver good performances ,O'Malley in particular has a swagger about him I like(With a great intro song ) and I legit think they have one of the most belivables and swettest romances in Disney

1. What do you think of the character animation? I always felt that the kittens didn’t move like kittens—don’t get me wrong, nothing wrong with the designs, but at best they move like adult cats. Oliver from Oliver and Company is how kittens move.

Hope was certain that the red of her eyes and trembling with her form was noticable to anyone, but Lestat seemed to understand what others felt in a way she had not witnessed with other vampires. Honestly, she had always been wary of acknowledging that she was a mixture of creatures. The community of vampires had embraced her as one of the only living breathing person to come out of the undead. Yet, this coven seemed to defer almost completely to the handsome blonde vampire who had already seemed to have chosen the role of protector. The redhead had been doing her best to snag on any thought or idea that wasn’t the pain of becoming an orphan. The way that the other man looked at the man who had yet to put her down spoke of the kind of love that was begrudging though clearly given. The child hoped that she was more than a fascination or a burden for this clan. Whoever claudia was had clearly set some sort of bomb off. And she found herself liking this Armand who so clearly was the kind who’s love you won by experience and steadiness. Maybe the sticky red or the warmth of their bodies together in it should of set her off, but the traumitized child hadn’t yet pulled her fist from its tight grasp of his hand. Such an oddity to watch vampires of great strength or seemingly from the carnage around her of their clan and their murderers tossing a few stuffed animals and wood carved chess pieces.Part of her wanted to counter the sentiment that she would grow old and be anything other than what they are now. Hearing the word ‘my’ in his mouth shouldn’t have felt like a kiss to the heart in a way her family and her kind claimed. There was so much to earn in this whole situation and worlds. But the magic that lingered in her veins that he had yet to know put her at ease. Virgina. She had never known anything besides the life of the french quarter though her father spoke of his original home. “Is this your house?” Hope asked with only the slight lifting of her head and a tiny smile pulling at her lips as some of the uncertainty melted further. Vampires so often lived in plain sight or in places so differeing from sterotypes that that wasn’t the surprise. But to live around their kind. Too have two fathers as that is what she was used to with Elijah keeping them alive though Elijah didn’t stare at his lips like these two. There was a safety here as if the wind itself kissed her skin with that knowledge. She’d have to draw this place. Maybe as a thank you for this acceptance beyond a vow to a dead man. Maybe add some of her magic to keep the others out. It would be just like starting over than when her mother was murdered and her child had gone to live with her vampiric relatives. “He’s a wolf like my mom. And I am happy to let you in my life, but I will always be a Mikealson- How about Papa? And your grumpy friend. I- I guess we should. Blood doesn’t bother me much anymore, but it certainly draws attention. But I don’t want to be alone yet. They were all- I didn’t think that they would make it. That they would hunt others who did nothing wrong. I don’t want to lose this family too. Maybe I can talk you into playing chess.”

Addressing the #boycottgenshin issue

So I feel like I should speak up about the whole #boycottgenshinimpact issue. First of all, I’m not indigenous myself so I won’t speak for them, but I am of mixed race (African and caucasian) so I want, firstly, to address the issue about colourism and racism surrounding Kaeya and Xinyan (but mainly Xinyan). As a second disclaimer, I’m French, so my English won’t be perfect and I do apologize for that, but I'm doing the best I can.

Ok so let’s get this out of the way: I don’t think Kaeya and Xinyan, as characters, are sterotypes/proof that mihoyo is racist, and I will explain why. First of all, the take that Xinyan is “whitewashed” is, in my personal opinion, basically racist. Xinyan is affiliated to Liyue, her name is — as far as I know — chinese-based, so to my understanding, she’s most likely of mixed race, which can explain the fact that her skin is not “dark enough” (at least I believe that it is the first issue). As I am myself of mixed race, I find this statement (that she’s whitewashed) really disturbing and disrespectful, because in this case I would be considered whitewashed (I don’t want to show any picture for obvious reasons, but if you really don't believe me I can show you my hand lmao) as I am on the "lighter" side of the “spectrum”. What I mean is that you don’t have to have the same skin tone as Morgan Freeman to be considered poc, and saying otherwise is probably at least as harmful as whitewashing someone. Xinyan is most likely of mixed race, and she’s (I think) a bit darker than me, so.. please don't accidentally imply I'm not dark enough to be a part of the black community?

Now, addressing the issue of people being scared of her: they aren’t scared of her because she’s a poc but because she’s loud and obnoxious, and because of her punk style. She’s a rock star! She yells constantly and has a demeanour that can be surprising, especially to children and easily frightened individuals. Please, I beg of you, read the full story before you jump to conclusions. This behaviour is harmful because not only is it useless, but it also perpetuates the belief that our struggle is also based on fake intel.

That being said, I also wish to speak up about the Hilichurls situation. I want to stress the fact that I’m not indigenous myself, so make your own conclusions! If it is proven wrong at some point, I will obviously review my judgement.

So. The main claim is that the Hilichurls being based on indigenous culture is an issue, as they are perceived as “more-or-less as unintelligent, savage monsters.” That is a fair assumption if you don’t dig into the game and learn more about the Hilichurls.

But if you do dig into the game and learn more about the Hilichurls, here’s the thing: they are not unintelligent, savage monsters to begin with. The Hilichurls were most likely part of Khaenri'ah, an “ancient civilization that existed 600-500 years before present-day Genshin and was extremely advanced.” The main theory is that Khaenri’ah’s citizens were cursed by the Unknown God for being too advanced, which is why they are depicted as “unintelligent, savage monsters”. Also, they are manipulated by the Abyss Mages; if you stroll around in the game, far enough from the Hilichurls, they don’t attack you. They’re just chilling, dancing or just napping, most likely because the mages have conditioned them to attack threats (namely: the citizens of Teyvat that weren’t cursed and aren’t part of the abyss, since the abyss is the main antagonist of the game) on sight. So, in conclusion: they aren’t savages, they are cursed and manipulated.

Now, the “unintelligent” part. You may have done the quests with Ella Musk, who asks you to help her have a conversation with a Hilichurl. If you succeed, she does, and the Hilichurl happily dances even though you’re in their vicinity, and doesn't attack you. They are intelligent, they just speak another language and have other means of communication. Saying that they are unintelligent just because they are mobs in the game is reductive, if you play long enough you’ll realise that that’s not the case. Also, they build stuff! They have towers, camps… They are in fact civilised!

I also want to point out that they aren't the only mobs in genshin. There're the treasure hoarders and the fatui! Just because one part of the mobs are loosely based on indigenous culture doesn't mean that the developers are racists, especially knowing that the fatui are the "real" antagonists at this point in the game (aside from the abyss).

In the long run, I don’t have enough information to be 100% sure of what I’m saying here, but neither do the people trying to boycott genshin over these issues. I don’t want to start a heated argument, but I am open to criticism if you aren’t convinced (that’s totally understandable, I may be wrong and this is really just the opinion of a single player enjoying the game and the lore associated with it). So, if you want to chat about it, I’d be happy to! Just know once again that I’m French and my English is probably broken as hell, so please don’t be mad at me if I can’t perfectly convey my position on these issues.

PS. addressing the paedophilia surrounding Flora issue, if I’m not mistaken it’s either a mistake (since Flora was an adult in the beta) or a misunderstanding (I believe there’s an adult Flora even in the game? but I’m not sure).
