any thoughts on the new post that staff went scorched earth on which is now making the rounds abt tumblr live? it basically screenshots all the tos and claims if you've ever opened the app (or in some rbs, unsnoozed live) tumblr has gotten your data. on the one hand i feel like this is fearmongering, but on the other its true that MOST sites have your data as is so its pretty standard. you seem pretty knowledgeable abt data gathering so i was wondering abt your take

This is going to be pretty unkind but watching tumblr users interact with staff and live is a great primer on how conspiracy theories happen.

Nobody on this fucking website knows how to read a ToS, nobody on this website knows how anything fucking works (sorry, this is not a dig at you but how would tumblr "get" your data from you clicking or unclicking live; the only data that tumblr has on you is the data that you have put on tumblr what data do people think that clicking the "new" button is scooping up that is anything beyond interactions or posts or IP addresses which are the things that tumblr already has information about like you do not introduce new information into the tumblr ecosystem by clicking a button you haven't installed anything you haven't changed permissions on your browser if everyone is so goddamned scared about live stealing their data i strongly recommend they stop using anything but public internet through an anonymizer and making sure location data is shut off on all of their devices and anyone who is flipping their shit about the type of data that live is collecting but who is using chrome on any device needs to chill the fuck out about live and flip the fuck out about google)

this is like that post about twitter's content policy that circulated the other day or that post about deviantart's content policy that circulated ten fucking years ago nobody knows how to read legal documents and nobody knows how to read technical documentation and this comes together into unholy matrimony on the no reading comprehension at all moral panic website

live never violated the GDPR it was just rolled out in the US first but the entire userbase decided that because it hadn't been rolled out simultaneously in the EU and the US that it was SO UNSPEAKABLY PRIVACY VIOLATEY THAT THE EU HAD BANNED IT FOR ITS CRIMES with, like, nothing whatsoever backing that up because, again, even at its most intrusive Live collects about as much data as Twitter or Yelp, both of which are *capable* of meeting GDPR standards with that level of data collection (even if musk sometimes makes decisions that violate GDPR).

Live is significantly less intrusive than any facebook product, than Amazon, and than any Google product. If you use youtube logged in, don't worry about live, the horse is out of the barn and tumblr is the least of your worries *regardless* of live. If you regularly use Google as a search engine please god learn how to evaluate and compare risks across platforms because Live is like a coughing baby compared to about a dozen things that most highly online people interact with every single day.

If you don't want to use live don't use live. Clicking the button doesn't magically transfer your secret FBI file to tumblr and even agreeing to the ToS doesn't share anything that tumblr doesn't already have if you don't continue to interact - if you don't interact with live after agreeing to the ToS it's not collecting any data except your non-interaction.

For everyone who is losing it over Live just turn off your goddamned location on your fucking cellphone and turn off your location on your goddamned computers and that's it, you're good, you're fine, relax. If your response to "turn off your location" is "but I need it for _____" then don't worry about Live, whatever "_____" is was already collecting and selling your data.

Do you use an activity tracker? Congrats, you have much, much bigger privacy issues to worry about than tumblr live.

Okay but also I yelled about that post and the very many ways in which it was incorrect in January.

And I happened to take an archive of the page at that time because I'm a paranoid motherfucker.

And if you want my guess as to why staff went "scorched earth" on that post it's probably because if you scroll down to the bottom of the page on the archive, OP calls on everyone looking at the post to send a kind fuck you to the CEO then tagged his tumblr.

If you look at the other posts that went scorched earth in relation to tumblr staff they were also posts that very pointedly directed a lot of ire at a single staff member.

I don't think that any individual tumblr staff members are above criticism and I don't think that staff as a whole is above criticism but part of learning to read a ToS is understanding that someone can be shitty and vague and use TERF talking points and skirt the line and be technically okay under the ToS while someone can have a legitimate gripe about another user being horrible and manage to violate the ToS by accidentally spinning up a harassment campaign or suicide baiting someone.

Shitty people like nazis and terfs thrive on being edge cases. They are very good at finding a boundary and standing juuuuuuuuust on this side of it and going "la la la I'm not violating the ToS, you can't stop me!" and that blows and it leads to a lot of people encountering a lot of shitty stuff on a lot of websites but personally I'm pretty glad that there's a lot of gray area because when you cut out gray area that's when you see things like It's Going Down getting banned as extremist content alongside white supremacists. Please continue to report nazis and terfs, and when possible go deep into their pages to report because a pattern of behavior is more likely to get recognized as hate speech than a single post that gets reported a hundred times. Please block as many people who it's harmful for you to interact with as possible because it's clear that staff is not going to do the kind of work protecting users that users would like staff to do.

However I just can't get angry on behalf of a blogger who got nuked for saying "Hey everyone who hates this feature that we all hate please go tell the CEO to fuck himself at this URL specifically" - that is an extremely clear violation of the ToS because it is absolutely targeted harassment.

So now tumblr-the-userbase is going off on its merry conspiracy way skipping through fields and lacking reading comprehension and saying "users are getting banned for reporting the crimes of tumblr live and its gdpr violations" and ignoring the fact that the post was nuked because the last line was saying "hey everyone, let's all individually tell the CEO to fuck off in messages sent directly to him that are certainly not going to include any threats, exaggerations, gore, etc. etc. etc."

If I were to make a post that had 50k notes and the last line was "and while you're at it, please send tumblr-user-ms-demeanor a personalized message telling them why they're a terrible person so they know what we think of them" it would absolutely be reasonable to say that was harassing that user. And that post did it with the CEO. Who is not above criticism (and I have my criticisms! I don't think he really gets tumblr and that's a problem!), but jesus fucking christ don't tag the goddamned CEO or any other staff member in a call to action asking users to send them messages saying "fuck off" this is literally the stupidest thing I've ever seen a tumblr conspiracy theory coalesce around.

Anyway thank you for giving me a place to vent i've been getting more and more pissed about this for three days. Everyone feel free to kindly tell tumblr user ms demeanor to fuck off.

Electricity bounced across clawed, neon-blue fingertips as Vox’s collection of monitors booted up, lining the walls in a cyan-hued excess of the latest tech his company manufactured.

With but a wave of his hand, the devices were slaves to his command.

As Vox sat upon his electronic throne that was centered before it all, he closed every work-related tab within his mental browser, before slumping in his seat within the darkness. The demon rubbed where the bridge of his nose would’ve been with a stressed crease in his brows; a little habit that he had acquired from his life above.

To say it had been a long day would’ve been the understatement of the century. For the first twelve hours since he had emerged from his quarters, Vox had been bombarded with underlings shoving incessant workloads into his lap.

Ensuring the reputation of the Vees, the new VoxTech Angelic Security system that he had been developing, the countless amount of paperwork and maintaining the digital grid, and to top it all off, he had to manage the temper of one pissed-off Valentino.

Ugh... Fuckin' Val and his goddamn runaways... it's not my fucking fault he can't manage his toys.

Dealing with the lustful moth Overlord's temper tantrums were usually the absolute highlights of Vox's day, but this time in particular there was quite the treat in store for the overworked Overlord.

Hm... Maybe that's how the name came to be. Ah, who am I kidding? Velv just sits on her ass all day.

Of course, Vox pushed his indignation aside and swept everything up with a winning smile of pure showmanship, the pinnacle of excellence in front of the public.

And just as everything seemed to fall into place, like any other day of Vox cleaning up the messes of his fellow Overlords, something just had to go fucking wrong.

Imagine being the literal fucking backbone of the Vees, ensuring that their picture-perfect reputation of utmost excellence and being called up by an irritated Velvet to play babysitter and manage the man-child because of fucking Angel Dust-

And then catching wind of ḧ̴͇͕́̍i̷̡̹͋͂̓m̵͈͔̳̭̙̍͝ returning...

A few sparks flew from Vox's antenna as his overheated fans whirred rapidly. That old timey, triangle-assed p̴̲̩̮͙̜̎́̋r̸͓̟͆̀͆i̸̼͕͓̺̹̪̔͛͊̋͗c̸̢̤̐͂͜k̵̻̭̦̣̪͈̕-̸̢̡̪͇̖̈́...

Slowly, he took a deep breath, stretching his knuckles and tilting his head to the side with a deep frown. He had the evening to himself, now. No Radio-Pricks, no need to maintain the perfect facade he had so carefully crafted for himself and his allies, and no Valentino.

Time to unwind...

A cup of coffee materialized in his hand with a spark of electricity that lingered around his hand, dancing upon his fingers. He scooted just a bit closer to the large, main monitor within the center of TVs installed in his office, and his mental request was immediately answered by the large computer screen before him.

A zipped file containing possibly the most sensitive information that you couldn’t fucking torture out of the television demon happened to be the very first result of his search, almost teasing him with the overtness of his little obsession.

Vox clicked on the file quicker than ever before, and he took a long, slow sip of his drink as he focused solely upon the pretty little blessing that had graced his screens since a few months ago.

You were lounging on your couch, scrolling haphazardly on your phone in your less-than ideal apartment, but hey, it worked for you, so who was Vox to judge? Even if he would've placed you in one of the most mind-bogglingly extravagant penthouses that you'd ever seen in your afterlife, he had no qualms as long as you remained untouched.

And luckily, his position and occupation made it more than easy to ensure that you had no one in particular in mind to take his place.

No matter where you were, or what you were doing, nothing about you remained unseen by Vox, and no stone was left unturned when it came to your private life.

And Vox was always there. Watching. Adoring you through digitally enamored eyes without moving an inch from his seat.

Small, pixelated hearts floated across his interface as you looked through your phone, blessing him with a plethora of reactions. Whether it be with a small pout of your lips, to the furrow of your brows, to that cute giggle-snort you made whenever something seemed funny to you, the electronic Overlord drank it up like red wine from a golden cup glorified by gods themselves.

Lord, Vox had it bad.

Every step you took, every breath you inhaled, every purchase you made, every club or restaurant you went to, your exact order at your favorite diner, your taste in fashion and jewelry, he memorized every fact, photo, and video and saved it all in a private file.

It was Vox's most precious possession, the closest he could ever get to you, for now.

Vox’s smile stretched across his flat-screen face; a neon hue of razor-sharp teeth pulled into a fond simper as the sound of your chiming laughter rang out across his office.

How he wished to capture the sound, perhaps place it into a bottle for him, and only him to hear, your smile a treasure of the rarest quality to keep.

There was no doubt about it, Vox was your number one fan.

More monitors across the room lit up, whether it be with your beautiful face or your soft, angelic singing, there was nothing but you, you...

Y̵̼̜̿o̴̝͕̾ṷ̸̇.̶͈͍̎̔ ̵̟̒̚

Vox hated the idea of having to share this with anyone else. Share you with anyone else. Every time he ended the night like this, he had to fight the urge to steal you away and seat you upon your rightful place, a throne beside his, towering above his empire with no unworthy, sinful eyes to look upon you.

“Huh... I’ve actually always wondered what that ‘Vox’ guy is like in real life...” said demon froze at the sound of his name pouring from your lips, and a soft blush mixed with the bright blue glow of his face, coloring it a light lavender pink. You were talking to yourself again, something Vox binged like a talk show whenever he was off work.

He could watch you all day like this. And God knows that he would massacre any number of demons, conquer any area of territory simply for a few minutes in your presence.

A casual conversation, witty banter, fuck, he'd rather talk about the goddamn weather with you than be deprived of your presence any longer. Not behind a screen, but in person.

Vox needed something, anything with you, romantic or platonic, though the former would surely grow an insatiable craving, if you kept teasing him like this.

He needed you to be there for him, to just treat him like a person.

Vox normally wouldn't mind the fact that he was always perfecting himself for others, catering to their every desire. A machine. Meant to serve the masses, and in turn, they'd fall to their feet before him like flies to honey, insatiable, pathetic worms.

But it'd drive anyone to the brink of fucking insanity, to keep up the same, cheery yet suave charade every draining day.

And with you? Even if you never knew about your secret admirer’s ever-prying eyes watching your every step, it felt like Vox didn't need to put on a show for you. He could simply watch and listen as you, sweet, mischievous, lovable you talked his ears off for the rest of his day.

What I'd give to just kiss the hell out of her-

“Heh, he’s actually kind of cute. Y’know, for a TV, I guess...” you giggled at the end of your sentence as you scrolled through more photos of him, drinking up every piece of content that featured the demon that was watching you through your camera.

A little side-menu of exactly what you had been looking through immediately popped up, and an intense zapping noise from above signaled to Vox that, once again, the demon was two seconds away from overheating and having to reboot himself as he nearly spit out his hot drink.

Vox nearly short-circuited in his seat as you smiled warmly down at your phone, directly into his eyes as his cold, mechanical heart pounded in his chest, and bright red spread across his screen like a virus.

“Oh... Ohoho...”

“Now that’s good television...”

if you havent switched over to firefox, i recommend you do. unlike chrome and other browsers, firefox does not use your personal data to cater ads to you, and its way more customizable. and, since the start of this year (2023), add-ons including adblockers can no longer be used. im hoping this post can be a sort of guide people can use if they want to start using firefox

to start off, you can import your bookmarks and other data (like logins and saved passwords) with this easy tutorial. and if it hasnt asked you yet, you can make it your default browser like this. i also recommend making an account in case you ever want to log in from another device or anything happens to your computer. with this option, you can choose which data syncs and which doesnt.

settings

these are things i recommend you do in settings. at the same time, you can also customize your settings any way you want to.

1. in the ‘general’ tab

‘make firefox your default browser’

check for updates to be automatically installed (its near the bottom)

2. ‘home’ tab

scroll down to ‘shortcuts’, make sure ‘sponsored shortcuts’ is disabled

3. ‘search’ tab

make duckduckgo your default search engine

4. ‘privacy and security’ tab

standard security is fine, but strict doesnt hurt either. as it says, it may cause some sites to break, but ive found that barely any do. you can always switch back to standard security if you come across any problems

under ‘website privacy preferences’, select both options

under ‘firefox data collection and use’, i recommend unchecking the first one

under ‘https-only mode’, enable https-only mode in all windows. again, if a website happens to not work, you can always go back to disable https-only mode

add-ons

THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE is uBlock origin. if you dont want to use any addons, and/or don’t like them for whatever reason, please please please get this one at the least. its not only an adblocker, but also blocks most unwanted content on any website. if any content on a website is bothering you, you can disable it by right-clicking it and checking ‘block element’, for example.

to get rid of cookie warnings, you can simply go to uBlock origin settings, and under “filter lists”, scroll down to the “ads” section and check the boxes for “AdGuard Base” and “EasyList”. This does the same function as the add-on “i don’t care about cookies” (which is no longer recommended). under the “annoyances” section (further down than the “ads” section), you can check off all of them, but if you dont feel like checking them all, the most important ones are “AdGuard Annoyances“ and “uBlock filters-Annoyances“

firefox multi-account containers. if you use multiple accounts on a same website, this is for you. you can be logged in to two tumblrs at the same time with this addon, for example.

facebook container. similar to the last addon i recommended, this one isolates all facebook-related activity

now. youre seeing this post on tumblr. which might also mean that you use tumblr web. well, you should probably add xkit rewritten then. it lets you completely hide filtered posts, has a mutual checker, gets rid of the ‘youre caught up’ bar, and many more things

bypass paywalls clean. lets you get through paywalls. it’s also updated frequently, adding websites with paywalls

instead of the addon (it was deleted from the firefox store i believe), you can copy this link (not the text on page it takes you to, just the link!) into the text field you get when clicking on ‘insert’ at the bottom of the ‘my filters’ page on ublock origin settings.

bitwarden. open-source password saver and generator. make an account and save all your account passwords. also generates passwords. with this, you only need to remember your master password, and bitwarden does the rest, really

tab session manager. lets you save all the windows that you close, in case that you ever accidentally close out of a window. that way you can recover all your tabs

clearURLs. cleans urls of any tracking elements

there are many more extensions you can use, here are the ones that the firefox team recommends

i also recommend using firefox on mobile, especially android, since you can use add-ons with it too. again, i recommend using uBlock Origin. it is not as customizable on mobile but its still extremely useful. for iOS users, if you want ad-less browsing, you can install firefox focus, although its not nearly as customizable as firefox for android.

i hope this guide is useful for anyone wanting to make the switch!

just as a disclaimer (i am adding this on april 15th 2023, over 3 months after i published the post) this information is bound to change, and some addons and settings may become obsolete or redundant, with firefox adding more privacy-friendly settings, or removing available addons. i will update the post accordingly.

animated tumblr icon masterpost

(EDIT (7/10): it is no longer possible to have an animated icon if you did not have one previously. staff has admitted that this "feature" was added accidentally and that it's already been patched. i'll be removing any now-irrelevant segments from the intro and the FAQ. check the notes if you want to see earlier versions of this post)

two days ago, tumblr added the ability to have an animated icon by using an animated webp without giving out any official information on it (from what i can tell). i'm making this post to reduce the amount of questions i get about this. i'll be updating it with any new information i come across. if you have any questions after reading this post, feel free to ask

before i start, as of now, the web version of tumblr plays animated icons automatically which means icons with flashing lights/colors are a danger to people with photosensitivity. do not abuse this feature! remember to keep your icon safe for others by avoiding using any animated images with flashing lights/colors

also, please note that i do not use the tumblr app and i don't know how it works or how it differs from the web version. i use the desktop website as well as the website on my phone's browser (safari)

with that out of the way, here are some frequently asked questions:

7) if a blog has an animated icon, the animation only plays if i click on the icon. otherwise it's stuck on the first frame. why is this?

it's probably because of the platform you're using tumblr on. i use the web version and this doesn't happen to me, it just automatically plays on its own continuously. from what i can tell, this bug(?) only occurs on the tumblr app (depending on which device you use)

8) i use the app and i can't see anyone's animated icons, it's stuck on the first frame no matter what i do. how do i fix this?

check to see if you need to update the app

9) all the animated icons on the page suddenly froze up, what do i do?

try scrolling a little bit, that should unfreeze them. i don't know why this happens or why doing that fixes it 🫥

10) i had an animated icon and now it won't move. why did this happen and how do i fix this?

unfortunately i don't know why this happens, sorry. i could be wrong but from what i've seen i don't think you can fix it ☹️

11) i currently have an animated icon, if i upload a different animated webp image will it still work?

from what i've seen, no. if you want to keep your animated icon as it is, i'd suggest not changing it

12) i have an animated icon, if i edit my blog appearance (without changing the icon) will it mess up my icon?

if you edit your blog appearance via the desktop theme editor (https://www.tumblr.com/customize/yoururl), it should be fine

Wayfarer Episode 2 Has Released! ✨

The complete episode is now available to play on the public build. This is a massive update that adds 340k words of total new content to the game, with multiple paths, consequences, and outcomes.

An average playthrough of the episode is 81k words, or around 4.4 hours of gameplay.

What Is Wayfarer?

Wayfarer is a dark fantasy interactive fiction game. With the storytelling of a novel, the player choice of an RPG, and the dice roll mechanics of a tabletop game, the game creates a unique experience that changes with every playthrough.

You play as a Wayfarer, a mercenary from an order of warriors immune to magic. An important contract brings you to the city of Velantis, where you are tasked with the mission of retrieving an ancient magical artefact. Along the way, you are embroiled in enemy factions, meddling guilds, and escalating political tensions. Your choices will ultimately determine the city’s fate – and the fate of every person who lives there.

To ensure the update works properly on a browser:

Launch the game from a fresh tab or window

If your save file is from September 2021, you MUST start a new file

If you encounter errors at launch or issues with saves, please read Troubleshooting Game Launch & Save Errors

i went back to replay the scene to check if i missed something like if luke was holding her laptop or some shit and "access to your computer logs" was more of "yo ur timestamped browser history is like, right in front of me" but prior to this exchange mc had only showed luke her chat with ted.

that couldve happened on her phone or laptop and i guess maybe that chat couldve shown late timestamps of her staying up but 1) why didnt the line just say that and thus save me from the full minute "HUHHH?!?!??" misunderstanding of thinking that luke used his hacker prowess to essentially keep tabs on mc's data and 2) it's just wayy funnier to me to construe this exchange to mc and luke being co-dependent wackos (affectionate)

im aware this could go a dark/yandere!luke route but im personally not too big of a fan of those (and if you are, thats neat!! just not my thing) and thus am going more on the hc angle of Luke And MC Mutually Have No Understanding Of Normal Social Boundaries With Each Other, like, thats just how they are with each other.

theres no dark or malicious ulterior motive, thats just how they Are. grew up together, told each other everything, peas in a pod, and as they grew older and got wilder skillsets, the lack of boundaries continued via those mediums and they think this kind of stuff is completely normal and everybody surely is like this with a close friend, right?

and i say mutually. for equality. i dont want luke to be the only one w the stalker power, mc has to have it too

luke can have his hacker bullshit to keep tabs on mc but for the sake of Equality and also for the sake of him finding ways to cope with his Big Huge Guilt over his 8 year disappearance, luke gives mc ways to creepily keep tabs on him as well.

You stared at the screen that won't log off from the same app. Your staring at certain character who seems to hacks and possess your device. Breaking the forth wall and shit.

"smh, I never know this could be a thing." You are totally chill about it as you read fanfic on your other phone away from the view of the hacked or posses phone in front of you.

"namechi seems very cool about your phone being possess. Shouldnt you be throwing your phone or something?" Idia shroud commented as he shake his head staring at you from behind the screen.

"I don't have money to buy a new phone, nor this is my personal phone I'm using to play." You added whole scrolling to the fanfic on your other hand.

"namechi, you really think low of me to not look at me while chatting with you? Shouldn't it be super mega rare occurrence of breaking the fourth wall happen to any weeb?"

"can you break the code and make all your cards come out of the gacha without making me broke or something." You ignore the words of the house warden. You saw him sigh in the corner of you eyes as he press the screen of hologram in front of him, Ortho face appear from it. You become destructed by the odd sight.

You don't realize your other phone also been hacked by the younger shroud. You don't notice it shut down and reload with the logo of the Shroud appear in the screen instead of your mobile logo.

"big brother, the mission is a success!" You heard Ortho voice from your other phone as the screen went back to the home screen but the difference is Ortho is on it, like a live 2D wallpaper. The difference is that his more of an AI of your phone now.

"...ok. cool" you commented as you scroll back to the Tumblr app to return to the fanfic your reading before you scream when you saw Ortho in front of the nsfw fanfic your reading... Cough of a twist characters.

"scanning content, analyzing content. Sending context to mobile ####... Wow name, you have odd taste!"

"NONONONONO CANT YOU ALL LEAVE ME WHILE READING...? ORTHO DONT YOU DARE LOOK AT THAT (LAST NSFW FANFIC YOU READ) ITS NOT WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE. STOOOOOPPPP." You try to press the back to the home bottom but you don't have control over your phone, you watch in despair and misery the robotic teen reads the fanfic list out loud while being connected to the other phone, which have his older in it.

"your going to hell with that kind of fanfic your reading." You felt very miserable being judge as your browser history being seen by those shrouds. "Oh wow your taste on Nsfw is really going to make you bound to the underworld."

"shut up idia. You probably read the same things on your man cave." You hiss at idia on your other screen, you do notice someone is walking toward idia to look at the content of the browsers history Ortho is scanning while sending from the other phone.

You watch as 3 Ignihyde dorm member stared at your browser history. They all roasting and commenting on it.

"wow you read that kind of tag?"

"wow is that (tag)? Very spicy taste."

"why are you research picture of (game)? Are they twst competition? Your phone don't seems to be able to download it either way. So it's still twst win."

You can't even stop them from looking as the crowd increase in number, you just wait that your phone become drain by all that activity they are doing inside.

The torment last for so long, you went to get break fast. And become immune after the nth teasing.

And here we go again! Welcome to AkuSaiMonth, a month of celebrating AkuSai & LeaIsa!

Just like last year, we will be playing bingo again! The prompts on the bingo cards are randomized! Which means, every participant will have their prompts in 1 of 30 different arrangements!

How does it work?

How to Keep Your Twine Project Safe

It is a tale as old as time. The app crashes, your cache is cleared, your laptop breaks, and hours or days or weeks of work is lost. It's a terrible experience, and you never think about what to do in that situation until it happens to you- and by that time, it's already too late. So here's your prompt to get ahead of things and keep your project protected before something goes wrong.

So here, I'll be going over some layers of security you can use...

1. NEVER use the web app

I know this one's gonna be controversial. I know, a lot of people use the web app! It exists for a reason! But if you do, you're leaving your work very vulnerable.

When you use a local installation of Twine, your files are being saved to local storage. That means that everything is saved on your hardware, and with the exception of a freak event, it's not going anywhere. Don't get me wrong, those freak events aren't rare enough to dismiss (we'll talk about that later), but it's not quite as bad as the web app.

Instead of saving your files locally, the web app saves your progress to your browser's cache- the same thing that saves your cookies and keeps you logged in on websites. If your cache is cleared for any reason, your games will be gone.

2. Write your documents in a separate program

Chances are, if you're using Twine, there's a lot of stuff you can do outside of Twine before moving it into the program itself. A common practice is to write prose in a separate program, and then move it all into Twine when you're finished and write the code in Twine. This is a great way to back up your work, because if Twine has an error, you'll still have all the source files to reconstruct what you had before.

I'd recommend trying to use a stable program to write in. That means something that saves locally and doesn't frequently crash. In other words, do not use Google Docs. Instead of Docs, try one of these:

Microsoft Word (expensive, subscription, but stable)

LibreOffice (free, stable)

Scrivener (one time purchase, stable)

3. Back EVERYTHING up

I can not stress this enough. Back up your damn work. Back it up in multiple places if possible.

"Oh, but I'm using Google Docs, it's already backed up!" NO. No it is not. To keep your work truly safe, you need multiple copies hosted on multiple pieces of hardware. If one of those is a Google server, great! But if it's just one, that means that one single failure in that hardware (or the software associated) will mean everything is lost.

You can back up your files from the Twine program by going under the Build tab and selecting Publish to File or Export as Twee. Saving that to your device is already better than having it saved by the Twine app, but you'll be even safer if you back that file up to an external hard drive (or just a cheap USB drive) and a cloud hosting service like Dropbox or Google Drive. To make it extra safe and minimize lost progress, make sure you replace these files regularly.

That seems like a lot of work though, right? Yeah. So here's my final piece of advice...

4. Use Git

Git is how I've been backing up my latest project, Signal Hill. It's intimidating at first, but there are simple and easy ways to use platforms like Github to keep your work safe and fix big errors. To teach you how, I've created a whole separate tutorial, which you can find here.

I’ve been using browser password managers for a while now. How are these different from something like bitwarden besides not being open source and having the master password be the one tied to your [Google][Firefox][Apple] account? (I assume they’re insecure but I swear my infosec professor said the browser based ones were better. However he also said that’s because they were local to your device and I know that’s not true)

One problem with browser-based password managers is that you may not have access to your browser. If you're at your university library and using their computer to print from your google account, what do you do if they have chrome but not firefox? If your phone breaks while you're on a trip with friends do you install a browser on a friend's phone and log into your account to check funds in your bank account? What happens if you use firefox at home and on all your personal devices but work gives you a chromebook? Do you migrate all your passwords? Do you just never do anything personal on the work chromebook? Do you share some passwords between the two?

Another problem with browser-based password managers is that people's behavior when logging in to their browser is not the same as their behavior when logging in to, say, a social media site.

People don't always lock their screens. People put very sensitive information into their browser password manager and then walk away from their desk. People don't log out of their browser when someone else sits down to use their computer. My attitude is that if you are going to use a browser-based password manager, you should ONLY be logged-in to your browser when saving or accessing a password, because otherwise it means that your password manager is always on and always accessible.

I've got bitwarden set up to time out after fifteen minutes. The password manager I use for work kicks me out every hour. I set my phone screen to lock at two minutes and my desktop to lock after five minutes.

The idea that people are just walking around logged in to their phone browser and never locking the screen makes me crazy. The idea that people might be logging in to their browser on shared devices makes me crazy. But it describes how a lot of people use their browser-based password managers.

One thing that I *love* about Bitwarden is where I can choose to use it. If I want to keep it totally isolated and offline, I can. If I want to access it through a browser plugin or an app on my phone, I can. If I want to go to a webpage in any browser and log into my vault to get passwords, I can. It's extremely portable in a way that browser-based password managers (and honestly some paid app-based password managers) aren't.

Also yeah they aren't local to your device, they store the passwords with your account information. There are device local password managers but I personally do not tend to recommend them because I think that they don't really meet the needs of most users. Sometimes you have to log into your bank account when you're not at home and using a password manager that is only on one computer and nowhere else is going to make that impossible.

(there are use cases for device-linked password managers, and they aren't insecure, but if you set someone up with a password manager that they can only use on one device and then they can't use their passwords when they're out and about, they will not use the password manager - user behavior is a really important part of infosec that sometimes gets overlooked in favor of what is "THE MOST SECURE" - the most secure password manager is the one that someone will USE, so if all you can get someone to use is the browser password manager then that's a good password manager, however if I'm giving my recommendations for what I think is the most secure and works best for the greatest number of people, it's Bitwarden all the way baby!)

Since I've seen some bad "convert to firefox" posts here is the setup I use to only rarely see ads on desktop or android:

Firefox (or Firefox Beta, or Firefox Nightly if you're feeling spicy)

ublock origin

blockada

NewPipe

That's it.

Firefox blocks third party cookies and trackers automatically by default, you don't need any additional add-ons for that & they will just slow down firefox. ublock origin (not the plain ublock, not adblock plus) has many filters you can select from the settings and you should go through and add whichever seem to make sense for you. for example, if you're in Germany or visit German-language sites often, there is a filter for that specifically. if you ever do happen to see something you don't want to see on a site (it doesn't have to be an ad) you can remove it with ublock origin. ublock origin will block ads in spotify and on youtube in the web browser. if you use add-ons to make youtube better in other ways, disable their adblocking features or they may interfere with ublock origin.

blockada is a mobile app that blocks ads in apps before they even reach your phone. you will only find the subscription option app on the app store, but if you search their website and click download there is an option to download Blockada 5 which is free and works fine. if you have iOS you have to buy the subscription version, I don't use iOS so I can't offer you alternatives. some of your apps may break when blockada is turned on. you can whitelist those specific apps in blockada or try to figure out which specific url needs to be whitelisted. However, it can't block ads in the youtube app. So...

NewPipe is a youtube replacement app. It does all the things you can do in youtube but faster and better and doesn't show ads.

aside from that, if you want to keep your stuff secure the number 1 thing you should be doing is using randomized unique passwords with a password manager. there's one built in to firefox. it even syncs across devices.

hi everyone! this tutorial is over a year old and i've been getting countless requests asking for help so i've finally gotten around to updating this tutorial. youtube and tiktok have taken my videos down repeatedly so i've resorted to posting it here and reddit. i plan on hopefully making a new video in the future for those who are visual learners, but for now this will do. before we get started

here are a couple things to consider:

this tutorial is for mac users only. there are probably tutorials available for windows users you just have to browse for it

do this at your own risk. i cannot be held responsible for any damages this causes or any viruses you get on your computer

now for the tutorial...

STEP 1: downloading the unlocker

first thing we'll do is type "sims 4 updater mac" into your web browser or go to this link. next, scroll down until you see "step 1" and follow the steps.

step 1 says to download the file: origin DLC unlocker for mac, so let's do that. click this link, then under "origin" and "ea" click the first link depending which software you use. if you use EA use this link.

the file should download into a .zip file, if this is the case it's downloading correctly. if not, you didn't do it right or theres some restriction on your computer.

once the file is downloaded, click it to extract it(should happen automatically). if it doesn't open, download a zip extractor from the app store. if it doesn't open you didn't do it right and you should dm me on instagram.

now, you should quit origin if it's open. make sure it's completely closed. to do this, click "quit" when holding down on the app.

once you've done that, we're going to open the DLC unlocker folder we downloaded. inside the folder, there should be a file called "fix originclient.command". hard press on the file then click "open" and it should open in terminal.

NOTE: PLAYING AROUND WITH TERMINAL CAN BE HARMFUL TO YOUR COMPUTER. MAKE SURE YOU BACK UP YOUR DEVICE AND DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.

once terminal is open, follow the prompt and where it says "press any key to continue" press enter/return on your keyboard. once you've done that it should say process completed. if it does, you did it correctly. if it doesn't you did it incorrectly and you need to contact me.

now we're going to repeat the process but with the "add fake entitlements.command" and do what it says. if it says "press any key to continue" press enter/return on your keyboard. when it lists different games games in order from 0-2, press 2 for sims4. if you're not playing sims 4, this tutorial is not for you. after, you should press enter/return to confirm your choice.

now, open origin like normal, run the sims4(but don't open a game), then immediately quit the game once it's open. once you've done that, go back to the terminal window and press enter/return on your keyboard. it should say process completed

STEP 2: downloading the pack(s)

now, we're going to download our pack(s) to add to our sims 4 game. to that, click this link then scroll down until you see an organized table of all the sims4 packs.

important thing to note:

download each pack one at a time. after each download of each pack, you must redownload the DLC unlocker AGAIN and repeat the steps in step 1.

to download your desired pack, click the red link beside the pack name. in this tutorial, i'll be downloading wedding stories, once you click the red link, it should immediately start to download, you should not be brought to a new website or link.

your file should be an .iso file. if this is the case, you're doing it correctly. if not, please dm me on instagram.

wait for the file to download then open the disk utility application. you can find this by opening launchpad and searching disk utility or by opening finder -> applications -> utilities -> disk utility. depending on how many files you have on your computer, this could take awhile.

once it's downloaded, do not open it. simply, open the disk utility application, go to the top menu bar at the VERY TOP OF YOUR SCREEN and click file -> open disk image then find the .iso file and select it then click "open" a section called "disk images" should pop up. if this isn't the case, you didn't do it correctly, please contact me.

now, we can open the .iso file from our downloads. a window should pop up with a folder. if this isn't the case, something is wrong and/or you didn't do it correctly. with this folder, open finder -> shift+CMD+H -> applications -> sims 4 packs. drag the folder into the sims 4 packs folder we just found.

now you may open your sims 4 game, and the pack should be there.
