i think my main issue with writing fiction is truthfully i have an analysis essay brain and don't know how to say things in a manner that isn't insanely clinical but in my defense it also takes a strong heart to explain the whole bertilak+lady bertilak/gawain situation in academia-acceptable terminology. or it was a struggle for me

this place was incredibly advance for a human country. advanced way beyond what the eternals had originally thought they would. the whole city revolved around science. thena was sure phastos would thrive her. her and gil had situated themselves in a hut down the river. it was nice where they were, peaceful. but not too far from the main city. thena sat outside at the porch table looking at the views. she turned and smiled at gil when he came out, hoping he was coming with food. “i wonder how we never knew about this,” she said. “their advancement in science.”

SET FIVE - ROUND ONE - MATCH ONE
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Cueva de las Manos (Cave of Hands)" (created in several waves between 7,300 BCE and 700 CE) / "Cave of El Castillo" (c. 40,000 BP)
CUEVA DE LAS MANOS (CAVE OF HANDS): To me, it speaks to the vast continuity of humanity and human creativity. People were there and they left behind something of themselves. (cesiousblue) (also submitted by anonymous and jedi-ranger)
CAVE OF EL CASTILLO: these handprints are from el castillo cave in spain. over 40,000 years old. they were made by blowing hand-ground pigments through a hollow reed or bone onto hands placed against the cave wall. for a long time it was assumed that most cave paintings were made by adult men. a recent effort by a group of archaeologists to digitally scan and compile these (and others in nearby cave systems) have shown that about 25% of the handprints belong to children. the process of loading and blowing the pigments was a difficult one, that would have had to be done by an adult. which means that this wall, and others like it, were entirely communal. these were places where adult prehistoric humans took the time to teach their children art. over thirty thousand years before gilgamesh was committed to written language. humans were committing their children’s handprints to stone. the way they must have valued their families, their communities, their art, to go through the process of making this art with them. and not only that, but just the sheer relatability of the action itself! if you transported 40,000 years in the past you’d have little in common on a high level with the humans you’d find. you can’t really talk about your data entry job with the hunter gatherer. but you’d still get a kick out of blowing ground ochre pigment over your hand onto a cave wall. and they’d get a kick out of helping you do it. humans have always been humans. doesn’t it just make you want to fall to your knees at walmart, how beautiful it all is?  (source for nerds who care, like me: https://news.artnet.com/art-world/children-worlds-first-artists-new-study-finds-quarter-prehistoric-spanish-hand-paintings-kids-13-2084734/amp-page) (isawken)
("Cueva de las Manos" (Cave of Hands) is located in Santa Cruz, Argentina and consists of outlines of hands, as well as some depictions of animals and hunting scenes created using various mineral pigments and gypsum on rock. The paintings cover about 60 m × 200 m (200 ft × 650 ft) of the cave.
"Cueva del Castillo" (Cave of the Castle) is located within the Caves of Monte Castillo in Puente Viesgo, Cantabria, Spain. The cave consists of over depictions of human hands, animals, and geometric shapes, including the oldest cave art in the world.)

Anyways. In-game dialogue re: Aspect of Gilgamesh. Asterius gives the phrase to awaken the aspect to Zagreus

The second time challenging them with the aspect of Gilgamesh (and Theseus and Asterius have a conversation about it, tho we don't get to see what was said 😭 so sweet to me that it seems Theseus realizes his mistake and is doing a bit better with Listening now, cuz he has no speaking lines himself in this encounter)

And then Zagreus says this to Achilles about Theseus and Asterius which is... 👁️👁️

A BIG LAPUTA META
          —- ORIGINS , PART 1
featuring a lot of extra research, in many parts , because this is long as all heck. not under a readmore, in case i ever move blogs ….
i have to set the stage for literally everything else that i will probably ever write, ever, for metas on this blog . for a starting point, i’d like to point out that a large part of my portrayal is taken from the original movie, not the english dub, but i do love mark hamill oof. any references to lines from the movie will be from what i managed to grab from subtitles.
from the scene where muska fires the weapon of laputa:
GENERAL Wh – what mockery is this ?
MUSKA Be quiet. You are before the King of Laputa.
GENERAL Are you mad… ?
MUSKA Today, we celebrate the rebirth of the monarchy. The rebirth of the World Empire under one King. Let me show you gentlemen the power of Laputa. […] I will show you the threat of Laputa. […] It’s the heavenly fire that destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah in the Old Testament, and the arrows of heaven which took Ramayana, Indora, and Atlantis. The whole world will bow to Laputa again!
ok ok so uh, quick rundown about the lore that i follow for atlantis —- plato’s dialogues, timaeus and critias. from timaeus
Now in this island of Atlantis there was a great and wonderful empire which had rule over the whole island and several others, [critias talks about atlantis having a lot of territory and wanting to have more and says atlantis tried and failed to take over the lands of king solon] But afterwards there occurred violent earthquakes and floods and in a single day and night of misfortune […] the island of Atlantis […] disappeared in the depths of the sea. For which reason the sea in those parts is impassable and impenetrable, […] this was caused by the subsidence of the island.
from critias,
For many generations, as long as the divine nature lasted in them, they were obedient to the laws, and well-affectioned towards [poseidon], whose seed they were ; for they possessed true and in every way great spirits, uniting gentleness with wisdom in the various chances of life, and in their intercourse with one another. [critias talks about the atlanteans being virtuious, so on …] By such reflections and by the continuance in them of a divine nature, the qualities which we have described grew and increased among them; but when the divine portion began to fade away, and became diluted too often and too much with the mortal admixture, and the human nature got the upper hand, they then, being unable to bear their fortune, behaved unseemly, and to him who had an eye to see grew visibly debased, for they were losing the fairest of their precious gifts; but to those who had no eye to see the true happiness, they appeared glorious and blessed at the very time when they were full of avarice and unrighteous power.
this basically can be summed up as "atlanteans lost their divinity, became mortal and then were struck down by the gods."
an accepted date of the fall of atlantis is 9500 BCE, that’s a LONG TIME AGO. guess what else existed around that time? mesopotamia. now, this is known from archaeological discoveries, since written history seems to have originated about 4000 BCE, ft. the epic of gilgamesh. the area which was mesopotamia included borders of iran and iraq, turkey, syria, northern saudi arabia, and kuwait.

Flying paper monsters mythology
Tumblr media
Sometimes described as more than 14 ft tall, the monster’s kind was said to have descended from demons. The other G in our entries, Gogmagog was a muscular humanoid giant from the island of Albion (the ancient name for Britain). According to the legend, when he fell down upon the adjacent soldiers, his massive body simultaneously buried 109,350 men and 21,870 elephants! Gogmagog (from Anglican/Celtic mythology) Source: Mythical-Creatures Wiki ( link) Incidentally, he met his tragic death in his very giant form at the climactic Battle of Kurukshetra. Having the blood of the rakshasa endowed Ghatotkacha with many magical powers, including the ability to glide and the capacity to turn into a monstrous giant. He was the son of Bhima, who was one of the heroes of this Sanskrit mythological work, and the giantess ( rakshasa) Hidimbi. Going against the grain of ‘evil’ monsters portrayed in various mythologies, the giant Ghatotkacha was described as a humble and loyal character in the world’s longest known epic poem Mahabharata. But unfortunately for the ginormous creature, the demi-god Hercules successfully captured the boar – as outlined by one of his twelve heroic labors. Oddly enough, the Erymanthian Boar was considered to be a repugnant form of the Greek god Apollo, who had changed himself into a monster to punish Adonis. Residing in the vicinity of Mount Erymanthus, the boar was fabled because of its sharp yet strong canine teeth that were used to gore and impale unfortunate victims who had mistakenly wandered to the ominous location. But the enormous one-ton Erymanthian Boar has seemed to elude pop-cultural references for quite some time now. Greek Mythological traditions have brought us a host of exalted creatures, including Kraken, Cyclops, Minotaur, Manticore, and Fury. This was supposedly done as a punishment to the existing civilization when the people revolted against the bloodthirsty divine will that demanded human sacrifices in return for protection. In fact, the legends pertain to the folkloric narrative when the Mayan Gods deliberately let loose the monster from its prison so as to destroy the entire race of Mayans – which would have made way for a new order of humans. For example, the Camazotz has been described as a purely evil entity with the sole aim to cause terror. But the fascinating part is – that Camazotz’s legend does have many similarities to the well-known vampire stories of the later eras. So, it really doesn’t come as a surprise that it is Mayan mythology that brings forth the legend of a mythical vampire creature. In terms of conventional zoology, all of the three known species of vampire bats are actually native to the New World. However, they were also depicted as nominally benevolent beings who warned travelers of any danger in their future journeys. In terms of portrayal, the Aqrabuamelu are described to have astronomical proportions, with their heads supposedly touching the sky and their mere glances resulting in death. They were said to be guardians of the sun god Shamash and were found around his abode at the Mashu mountains. The Aqrabuamelu or the Scorpion Men are mentioned in many myths written in the Akkadian language, with the most famous descriptions being in the Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh. Aqrabuamelu (from Mesopotamian mythology) Illustration by Larkin Art (DeviantArt) Hinrich Johannes Rink, the term Amarok pertains to only a ‘fabulous’ monster for the Greenlanders, while other Arctic inhabitants believed the Amarok to be a monstrous wolf greater in size than a human being. Interestingly, according to famous Danish geologist Dr. Some also draw parallels of this beast with the Waheela giant wolves that supposedly inhabited the northern parts of Canada. Many believe the legend of this lone wolf actually comes from real-time ecological periods when the untraveled deep woods were indeed populated by larger varieties of wolves (like the better known dire wolves). Sleipnir (from Norse mythology) Amarok (from Inuit mythology) Illustration by VinodramsĪ fantastical giant wolf from the barren lands of the Arctic, the Amarok is said to hunt alone in contrast to the pack tendencies of its much smaller brethren.Ogopogo (from Native American mythology).Gogmagog (from Anglican/Celtic mythology).Erymanthian Boar (from Greek mythology).Aqrabuamelu (from Mesopotamian mythology).

lukewarm take that not only is there literary value to be found in The Classics and reading them can give us a better understanding of how history and humanity function AND teach us critical thinking skills, but a lot of classic books-yes, even the ones by straight white men are very good. part of the reason why a literary canon exists, no matter how contrived or narrow the idea is, is so that we can track the development and creation of literary genres and movements. these books are classics not simply because they're "good" by modern standards, but because they're enduring. if something has survived for thousands or even hundreds of years, that is not accidental. literature is a record of history, whether intended or not. but, sure, we should throw the epic of gilgamesh in the trash and let students analyse good omens coffeeshop aus from now on!

Campfire Moping
"So, Goldie."
"Dwarf."
"Aww, don't be like that!" Varric laughed. "I heard they tightened your leash now that they're letting you go out on the field." Gilgamesh scowled at that one.
"Unfortunately, yes." He nodded, sighing and sitting down by the dwarf at the fire.
"Any reason for that?"
"They don't like it when I talk to the nobles." He said.
Varric laughed. "That's it?"
"That, and they don't want me scaring or harming anyone. Particularly Dulcea."
"Wow." Varric sighed. "Goldie, no offense but you can shit weapons and magical shit out of magical gates. I think if they're scared about you scaring her it would've happened already."
He sighed, not in the mood to correct Varric. "That's what I said."
"Who said what?" The Altus butted in, sitting down next to him.
"Sparkler, check this out. The big three are worried that Goldie here will scare the Herald."
Dorian laughed at that. "They think you'll scare her?"
"Yes, unfortunately."
"I'm sorry, but, how? If you breathe wrong around the camp Lady Josephine has a conniption."
Okay, that's it. "Pavus, unless you want to be the next person to be scared of me I suggest you shut your mouth."
"Oh, alright." Dorian sighed. "If I must."

The fact that Gilgamesh is 5′9 is honestly just so fucking funny to me. King of Heroes, origin of myth, tall as me and much shorter than many other Servants.
