When I lived the the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1990’s it was all about color for me. Fuji Reala and then NPS 160 were what I used to document Bay to Breakers, Carnaval, the Pride Parades, and all the protests. I also did some image collecting of signage and structures as I admired Dorothea Lange and Walker Evans work. I wonder if we’ll ever see a “lunch special” for $2.99 again. By any means I’m not in love with these pictures, mostly because I don’t really like how the colors came out. This is a combo of Fuji C200 and portra 160, and that tattoo one just came out so red and brown but I think it might just be my favorite.
Fuji was once a spearhead of film development, but during recent years became more known for discontinuing many of their films (ACROS, PROVIA 400X, SUPERIA 200 to name a few). It is understood that every company has to justify its profitability and - if revenues drop - make appropriate decisions. It seems that another discontinued films is the FUJICOLOR PRO 160 NS PROFESSIONAL film, which was only available as 120 medium format film.
Citing from FUJI’s datasheet: “ FUJICOLOR PRO 160 NS is an ISO film speed 160 daylight-type color negative film designed for professional use, featuring more highly optimized skin tone reproduction and neutral gray balance, especially important for portrait photography. Through its use of Fourth Color Layer technology, the newest emulsion technologies and new coupler technology, this film is able to deliver better grain quality and smoother skin tone reproduction than current films. Moreover, thanks to its well-controlled gray balance, it provides a wider exposure latitude that makes it more suitable for digital scanners.”
Colours are very pleasing and natural - especially greens and yellows, only reds are a bit orangy and with less punch.
Kodak still sells its PORTRA160 (35mm, 120 and also larger formats), a similar film with better blues and less contrast, though the latter can be fixed in hybrid post processing. All in all, FUJICOLOR PRO 160 NS could have been my ISO 160 standard medium format film for everything, but sadly it is gone.

I meet with friends every Tuesday at a coffee shop and we share stories. This last week I was asked if I went surfing everyday when I lived in San Diego? I admitted I had to show up for high school, and I had a job after school, but anytime I wasn’t working or in school and it wasn’t raining, I’d be at South Ocean Beach, surfing the left break off the pier. I knew it wouldn’t last forever, but it was the pattern/habit I enjoyed. Ever since I saw the photograph by Cedric Wright of @anseladams on the roof of his station wagon, or Dorothea Lange on the roof of her car by Rondal Partrige @imogen.cunningham.trust I’ve carried a ladder in my van. Another habit. I also tend to have at least two cameras with me and in 2008 after picking up @vickiknits at a fiber/knitting convention in Columbus, saw the mural on the side of a building that was just being completed. We stopped and I asked Jeremy if he minded sitting for me, and I made these two photos; one with the SWC and the other with the 500c and portrait lens. Before digital I used color film too, but like surfing, I think that pattern has changed. I do still carry more than one camera, and my ladder is in the van.
