“Illustrations made for the arcade version of Moonwalker and published in the 50th issue of Gamest. The art style reminds me a lot of Taku Makino's (who animated some of the game's characters).”

Cover for Gamest Mook Vol 39
In the 90s SNK character illustration work was very distinct from Capcom's. While Capcom's work was very stylized with emphasis in bold colors and strong linework. SNK work was trying for more painterly illustrations with more realistic proportions and style.
At least until SNK made Falcoon a main designer, and capcom hired Shinkiro, then the styles became more fluid.
In that way SNK KoF characters registered like pop celebrities to me.

Gamest Soul Edge manga cover, retrieved from haseo_kazama's Twitter. Unfortunately, I can no longer access the exact tweet because god forbid non-users search for do anything. Hopefully, the source link works; I had to do my best from a Google Image URL. I also have the images of the pages from the same post on hand. (I've been holding onto them for about four months. I'd only planned a simple translation at most.)
I, too, wish I could find a copy of this manga. As far as I'm aware, a bunch of Gamest scans are now available on the Internet Archive, for anyone curious.
