Gerec’s Favorite Fics - 2023

Here's a list of some of my favorite fics posted this year. A great big thanks to everyone still writing for this fandom; I know I'm very grateful to have all these amazing stories to read and to share!

Detours Along the Way by AndreaDTX (wip)

Erik Lehnsherr has been elected as the President of the United States of America, the youngest in history and the first ever known Mutant. Charles Xavier, his mate, is right by his side. But as Erik's first term begins, the couple braces themselves, knowing that getting elected is the easy part.

One bad day, a stranger arrives at Charles' house. The soldier says his name is Logan and that he was Erik's best friend when they served in the Mexican War. Logan brings bad news: Erik died in the war, and Charles must decide what to do with his life now that the man he loves is gone.

I realised that I forgot to post my stash of cherik LJ recs. So here they are:

I've been reading and adding these fics to my list since before the dawn of time. So the descriptions on many of the fics are somewhat wonky. Plus, you know how the kink meme works on LJ *shrugs*. So read them at your own risk.

I'll start with one of my favourites:

To keep the children (who range in age from kindergarten to fifth or sixth grade) from destroying everything in sight, Charles comes up with a scavenger hunt of sorts. The objective? To find his "heart" (which is actually a heart-shaped photo of everyone)

It arrived with the day's mail addressed to one "Anon Y. Mouse", which was such an obvious pseudonym his immediate reaction was to wonder which of the students had sent for it. After deciding that there were some things he was better off not knowing, he hastily did a mental sweep of the house to make sure there was no one heading his way and slowly began to flip through the pages.

So they fall into a routine where (dry or wet, doesn't matter to me) nursing becomes their go to for foreplay and for soothing away fear/stress/ upset/angry feelings. But I want it to be a special thing just between them, so obviously not something the children know about; and for them to remain adults throughout (i.e. different from "adult baby")

Ahhh, thank you so much for tagging me, @gerec!

I’ve published nine fics, and I honestly love all of them (lol is that a funny thing to say about your own work? I write the fic I want to read yada yada yada), but there are specific things I’m proud of with some of them, so:

1) “Contingency” (Charles/Erik, 74K words): the first fic I ever published, by far the longest one, and the only plotty multi-chapter story I’ve ever actually completed (god bless @1degosuperego). A canon-divergent AU of XMFC where Erik meets Emma a few years before the events of the film and they kill Shaw together, which subsequently alters the path of every other character/the course of history.

2) “Three Journeys” (Mystique/Angel, Charles/Erik, 33K words): In the same universe as “Contingency,” character studies from the POVs of Mystique, Emma, and Erik as they embark on three respective mutant-related trips. This is the only proper (not background) f/f I’ve published, and the whole thing took longer to write than any other fic, so I was v happy to finish (and proud of how it came out!).

3) “What We Inherit” (David & Charles, 20K words): Modern AU from the perspective of 15-year-old telepath David, who’s come to live with his father after his mother dies. A non-romantic slow burn! I wasn’t expecting to write a father-son genfic this year, but I loved doing it so much that I’m 32K words into writing a sequel lol. (That will be cherik, but still, the David & Charles relationship is at the center of it!)

4) “Unlived Histories (The Double Vision Remix)” (Charles/Erik, 18K words): My most recent fic and a remix of the wonderful “The Cost of a Good Man,” mirroring the original directly from Erik’s POV rather than Charles. (Tl;dr, Charles from another universe goes back in time to save Erik and his mother in the early 1930s, which dramatically alters not only Charles & Erik’s paths, but their personalities and worldviews.) This one let me draw on my several decades of reading 20th century queer fiction lol, and some parts actually left me pretty emotional as I was writing them.

5) “the way it travels in and keeps emitting light” (Charles/Erik, 30K words): Modern AU enemies to friends to lovers, where Charles and Erik’s antagonistic relationship starts to shift after Charles gets into a major accident. Most of my modern AUs are slow burns, but this is definitely the slowest, and I was really happy to be able to keep the thaw between them suuuuuper gradual and, as a result, hopefully relatively realistic.

Since I’ve barely been on Tumblr this month while traveling, I’m not sure who might have done this a few weeks back/who I could freshly tag. @midrashic? @joshriku? @rozf? Or outside X-Men fandom—@destinationtoast? I know you love self-analysis ahaha. :-))

Some people who have good ficrecs for all sorts of cherik are gerec, avictoriangirl, and earnestlyendlessly. Avictoriangirl also has links to some really popular fics that were sadly deleted or hidden. You’ll have to wade through the recs for non au fics but in my experience some of the best cherik fics I’ve read have been hard au. Have fun with cherik :)))

ohhhhh! thank you so much!!! it's funny, I'm not used to being in a fandom where AU's were the predominant kind of fic (by FAR, it seems!) but I really wanna open my mind about this because I'm sure there's some mindblowing stuff out there. thank you again for pointing me in some helpful directions, I really AM having fun with cherik so far!!

Summary: Erik Lehnsherr hunts the things that go bump in the night.

He’s done so since he was a child, since the first time his mother put a knife in his hand and told him how to use it, told him why he should.

But ten years alone on the road has caught up to him, left him wrung out and longing for a place to rest, recharge, get his head back on straight. Though nowhere has ever truly felt like home, he heads straight for New York City, a place that’s always had more to offer him by way of warmth and comfort than any other. What he finds when he gets there, however, is several miles south of anything approaching restful. Old acquaintances, old memories, and a mysterious stranger who has him forgetting all his rules — Erik soon realizes there are decisions he needs to make, before circumstances intervene and make them for him. Otherwise, he might not like the result.

An Accident of Circumstance – manic_intent

Summary: Secret Santa, for azryal00, prompts: virginity, stalking or vampire AU. Decided to attempt all, in one fic. As part of a reward for his successes in border skirmishes, Sebastian Shaw allows Erik discretion to create a childe of his own, within reason. Erik rebels.

B-Negative – manic_intent

Summary: Written for the 5 Acts thing on livejournal, for toestastegood's 'Vampire AU' Act. This was originally going to be some sort of True Blood parody, but it somehow became a bit more serious. :/

Bloodbound – ikeracity

Summary: Finding himself strapped for cash at the start of his senior year, Erik decides to become a donor at TypO, a blood bar where vampires come to drink fresh blood from consenting donors, safely and legally. There, he catches the eye of Charles Xavier, vampire, telepath, professor at Columbia, and quite possibly the most alluring person Erik's ever met. Their first meeting sets into motion a bond much deeper than they can understand, one that neither of them had ever expected.

Old Metal (Blood, Memory and Rubber Ducks) – pprfaith

Summary: Erik is a vampire. Sookie, err, Charles is a telepath. Any questions?

Food Allergies – madneto

Summary: A bout of insomnia one fateful night leads Erik to Xavier's, the late night bookstore near Columbia University, whose owner Erik quickly decides is the best thing since... well, since maybe ever. Charles is brilliant, funny, passionate, handsome, and every other good adjective Erik can think of, and even though they've only been on three dates, Erik is convinced this is the start of something perfect.

Then Charles has a bad reaction to the food Erik cooks for them on their fourth date, leaving Erik to wonder if maybe he's completely botched his one chance at true love.

Series

The Price for Eternity – madneto

Summary: Erik and Charles are relaxing in the park when Erik decides to ask Charles a question that has long been on his mind, re: vampires. The answer is unexpected.

Summary: Buffy AU. The story of a boy and his vampire.

Love and Other Secrets – Microsaur

Summary: Erik is a vampire that would much rather be left alone, Charles is a baronet that can't seem to accept that.

The First One – SassyDuckQueen

Summary: Erik Lehnsherr is a vampire living in a peaceful life in New York City, where he works as a night time security guard at the Pentagram. He's in a relationship with Charles Xavier, a young professor at a private university. However, his life is thrown upside down by the return of his wayward son, Peter, who informs him that an old enemy has resurfaced.

What I’m Reading Now Tag Game

I, like many fanfic readers, used to not read fics if they weren’t complete. But, now that I’ve been reading fic longer and perhaps because I’m a writer who starts posting a lot of things as I write them, I now read WIPs. And I think sometimes we don’t give WIPs enough love or attention. They are awesome - it’s like traveling back in time to when you only got an episode a week of a TV show and had to wait months over the summer for a new season (no binging possible)! And even when they aren’t finished and it seems like they may never be, I find myself so happy to be able to read what is there, because it is often so, so good.

So I am challenging people (myself included) to post some fic recs of WIPs that you are loving right now. It’s okay if the WIP last updated three years ago or last week - if you are reading it now (as in within the last few months), spread the love and help someone else discover a new fic they might not have tried!

Lynds always writes a wonderful tale. And its King Erik and bed slave Charles - who can resist that? I cannot wait for more spunky Charles and befuddled Erik interactions!

This fic is amazing! I seriously squealed with delight when it updated recently. Erik and Charles are both hiding things (when aren’t they, really?). Very intriguing character choices, particularly with Erik. Wonderful slow build relationship between the two men. Just, so so good.

4. Shrapnel by librata

I love historical Cherik - love it. This fic also has a bit of a Secret Garden vibe, which I love. The tension is so good. Another great slow build relationship between the boys. They still have powers, they’re still achingly complex and sometimes you want to punch them you’re so upset with them. In other words: perfection.

I love the non-chronological structure of this fic. It hurts, but in just the right way. So much angst. It feeds my shipper soul. Also, I have never seen the movie, or read the book this fic is based on (though I have a general idea of the plot) and it hasn’t decreased my enjoyment of the fic whatsoever.

1. What is your favourite Cherik canon/ canon fix-it fic? Sub Rosa by tahariel, beautiful post-XMFC fic with gorgeous art. Technically a WIP but works brilliantly as a one-shot. It’s a Charles-centric mansion fic where Erik is compelled to return to the mansion every November. Just a very lovely fic all around, bittersweet and angry, but with the promise of hope and recovery. Charles’ voice and characterisation are absolutely impeccable!

2. What is your favourite AU Cherik fic? THIS QUESTION IS UNFAIR BECAUSE THERE ARE JUST SO MANY

...That said there’s always going to be a special place in my heart for Boden’s Mate and its sequel, the Inception AU by kaydeefalls, just because it’s one of the first fics I’ve read in this fandom and it’s so excellent on a technical level. Tightly-plotted, amazing twists and tension, really fantastic use of the dream-sharing, mind-manipulating aspects of Inception to create some gorgeous settings. There’s lots of layered and nuanced symbolism (especially in the sequel), and recurring motifs that pack an emotional punch.

3. What is your favourite slow burn, super long Cherik fic? For that particular flavour of ‘They raw each other in the first part of chapter 1, then spend 100k in denial, misunderstanding, and self-doubt‘: Anarchy in the UK by Yahtzee, definitely! It’s so far outside the usual genre of fic I read but it just works. Fantastic chemistry, one of the fics that sell me on the whole “sparks fly at first sight” thing. Loved how all the plot threads were character driven and develop so organically!

On the other side of the coin, my favourite 100k of pining would definitely go to The Marriage Bargain by @kianspo! Such wonderfully self-indulgent harlequin arranged marriage fic with the BEST young Charles, who is charming and cheeky and brilliant and warm-hearted and vulnerable all at once! Definitely one of those fics I go back to again and again

4. What’s your favourite short and sweet Cherik fic? This fandom has given me a skewed understanding of “short”, I swear! Everyone is so prolific! But here’s a few that I always go out of my way to read whenever I see them pop up :D

But The Cat Came Back by twelve_pastels: catfic! what more do you need? Heli Cases by Black_Betty: cute dad Erik! Also check out To Do List by the same author. Two words: coitus calendar Other Crabs Cannot Be Trusted by groovyphilia: one of the first fics i remember reading after the release of xmfc and I still remember it all these years later, that’s how delightfully amazing it is in its crackyness! The Holiday Lights Battle by so_shhy: mitosis!!!

5. Which Cherik fic gives you all the angst and the feels? what cherik fic DOESN’T give me the angst and the feels? But Us by Pangea stands out as one of those “i’ve read this once and it’s brilliant and i never want to re-read it again ever” sort of fics. Give it a try if you like Dark!Charles!

6. What’s your favourite PWP/smutty Cherik fic? i’m too embarrassed to name specifics but anything by Red or by Gerec

7. What’s your best recent find in the Cherik fanfic world? The Cherik isn’t the main focus of the piece but please check out this devastating little XMDP ficlet from @fatcatsarecats... Warning for serious spoilers if you haven’t seen XMDP yet!

Otherwise I’ve really been enjoying the ficbits from @freewithyourtempo I’ve seen popping up in the Cherik tag lately! They have some really cool ideas and really good range from angst to wow damn this is hot

8. If you could only recommend one Cherik fic, what would it be? Boden’s Mate from above would probably always be my ultimate rec (and most of the fics here are on my personal ‘top 10 fics’ list), but in the interests of mixing things up:

Limited Release by rageprufrock, one of my favourite ensemble cast fics with the sort of established relationship, bickering but fond and loving Cherik that I adore! If you like FBI-style fics definitely give this a try; most of the team works under Erik, who is a senior agent, and Charles is his usual Professor/activist self that gets too involved for his own good. I absolutely love it - every single character gets a chance to shine, it’s action-packed, there are some really fucking funny scenes, and some really gentle and intimate moments between Charles and Erik. This fic pretty much has everything you can ask for! \o/

Secret Mutant Madness rec

Secret Mutant has always been one of my fave exchanges, I love the idea of it, many great fics have sprung from it and I have joined in a few times before myself. This year I had no time to write at all and the ways I experience fandom have been changing too, but @gerec convinced me to leave some Madness prompts and @flightinflame wrote a beautiful fic for one of them!

Trapped by terror by flightinflame [Gen]

A little girl can't sleep, and the mansion burns. A little girl can't sleep, and a car crashes on a water-logged street. A little girl can't sleep, and ghosts walk the night.

It’s a beautifully haunting fic about Jean, her nightmares and what they can do to the people around her. It’s also a canon compliant fic that really makes you understand why Charles decided to subdue the Phoenix Force and it’s painful yet hopeful at the same time. I fear it’s a little overlooked since there is no major pairing in it, so go and check out this little gem now :D

Mod note: Great dynamics with an uncommon but still spot-on characterisation of Charles. It’s very well-written and bleaker than most highschool AUs, therefore I’d absolutely recommend it to people who usually avoid this trope as well.
