[C] 'Greg Martin' Style: Super Mario Bros. (1985) by Mast3r-Rainb0w
A commission made via DeviantArt. Here I was tasked to mimic the artstyle of the LATE video game artist Greg Martin (1956-2013), for the all-time classic 1985 game Super Mario Bros.! I hope I have paid tribute to Mr. Martin's legacy with this fanart mock-up here! Enjoy!

[ID: Six screencaps from Taskmaster. Mae Martin sits at a table in a living room, looking at a large portrait on the wall of Greg Davies in a ‘60s psychedelic style. They say, “He’s got a very strong brow, doesn’t he?” From off-screen, Alex Horne agrees, “Oh, God, yeah.” Mae asks, “How do we get that?” Alex replies, “I think it’s practise.” Mae attempts to furrow their brow with questionable success. End ID.]

Gargoyles Revival Recruits Jae Lee and More for Gorgeous First Issue Covers
Dynamite Entertainment's upcoming Gargoyles series taps Jae Lee, Amanda Conner, David Nakayama and more for a series of first-issue covers.
Announced during San Diego Comic-Con, Dynamite's Gargoyles series comes from franchise creator Greg Weisman and will serve as a new "season" for the series that ran from 1994 to 1997.
The publisher released six, incredible-looking covers for the first issue of the series, created by artists Nakayama, Conner, Parrillo, Lesley "Leirix" Li, Lee, Tony Fleecs and more. The covers feature a number of Gargoyles characters fans know and love, including Goliath, Angela, Broadway, Lexington, Elisa Maza and others.
Dynamite said of Nakayama's involvement in the Gargoyles series, "He was a natural fit given his signature style straddling a modern comics look with elements pulled from Saturday morning cartoons and action figure packaging. Not only is he one of the top names in comics covers, but he's also lauded for his illustrations for Hasbro's Marvel Legends line of figures."
When announcing the series in July, Dynamite said Gargoyles will both continue the storyline from the television series while also being accessible to new fans. Additionally, the publisher previously announced it would be releasing remastered and compiled paperback volumes of the previous Gargoyles comic series. Creators involved in said comics include Conner, Joe Madureira, Jimmy Palmiotti, Martin Pasko, Grant Miehm and Mort Todd. Along with the new comic series, Disney also announced at D23 that Gargoyles Remastered -- a remaster of the Sega Genesis classic game -- will soon be available for fans to play.
Weisman isn't the only one returning to the world of Gargoyles in Dynamite's new series, as Conner also contributed to the 1995 series published by Marvel Comics. "The DC, Marvel, and Vampirella legend started her illustrious career doing many licensed and all-ages titles at Marvel in the 1990s including Barbie, and as the interiors and cover artist for the 1995 Gargoyles series," Dynamite said. "Now she's back with a cover featuring all the key cast including their human ally Elisa. Dynamite is set to begin releasing facsimile reprints and collected graphic novels of that series soon, with more details to come."
Gargoyles #1 is slated to release in December from Dynamite Entertainment. Fans can pre-order the issue at their local comic book shop or look for it on digital platforms, including ComiXology, Kindle, iBooks, Google Play, Dynamite Digital Comics+ and more.

So for whatever reason it looks like I totally forgot to post the finished piece I made for Sonic’s 32nd anniversary back in June 😅
Had so much fun trying my hand at all these different art styles from the incredible artists that have worked on the series over the past 3 decades! ☺️
Artist inspirations from top left to bottom right:
Naoto Oshima (Original JP design)
Greg Martin (Classic NA design)
Studio Junio (Sonic CD opening animation)
DiC Animation
Satoshi Okano (Sega Saturn)
Yuji Uekawa (Sonic Adventure)
Sonic X
Sonic Boom
Tyson Hesse (Movie Sonic)
Sega/Marza Animation (Modern 3D Sonic)
Poster inspiration is probably obvious 😉

Las Mordidas – Ex-Voto LP (L.G.)
Tumblr media
Never-thought-I’d-see-it-in-this-lifetime release of an album-length Las Mordidas record. Back in ’93-’94 when 7” singles were largely all I could afford, much less sneak back into my teenage bedroom, these guys put out a really great one, and little else (a split I didn’t find, comp tracks I couldn’t scope and a demo cassette well out of my reach). The 10 songs on Ex-Voto get most of it but not all of it, apparently the best of the tapes that could be baked, but that’s fine. It’s good to leave some mystery now and then. Las Mordidas was the connective in between Circus Lupus and The Monorchid for all-timer frontman Chris Thomson, joined here by John Kirtschen (Chris Bald’s little bro, also of Rain) on guitar, Beefeater/All-Scar Dug E. Bird on bass, and late-era Fugazi aux drummer Jerry Busher, and they really beat on those bookends, so much more “pro” than either it’s almost a shame things didn’t move beyond the semester or two they were active. Chris T is always a god-level vocalist, one of the best to ever do it, no arguments heard or even considered, so let’s keep going. I saw The Monorchid twice when Jerry was drumming and it was an entirely together, locomoting experience, playing about twice as fast as they could with Tom (who, understandably, was dealing with a drum kit that was always falling apart mid-set), and we get the benefit of that here, along with the versatility and inherent funkiness of the Birdzell bass. Jon K. is a lone guitarist who plays like he’s backing behind an evil twin hiding behind a full stack, rippin’ out these rhythmic crossover-style leads with a thick distorted sound that cuts like Vernon Reid meets Greg Ginn – he is the real secret weapon here, a very under-utilized guitarist following this group. One of the initial releases off this new reissue imprint, headed up by Monorchid/Skull Kontrol bassist Andy Coronado, with thick vinyl, tip-on sleeves and no digital counterparts to speak of from the looks of things. Other titles out include a reissue of the Fury EP (Chris fronting Swiz, a complete legend), the Milk Music demo (once shat on in these pages or ones like them by Dais co-capt. Ryan Martin), and some songs from Tarot Bolero pre/post party Decapitated Lovers. If you want these you have to engage in retail or mailorder, and good for you because you’re definitely gonna want this one. Let’s Go. (Doug Mosurock)

RIP Alan Grant
9th Feb 1949 -  20th July 2022
Alan Grant was a prolific writer from the UK who also worked for DC and was part of the ‘British Invasion’ of creators during the 80′s and 90′s.  Grant is well known for his work on Shadow of the Bat, Detective Comics, Judge Dredd and the Demon series starring Etrigan the Demon.  I’ve written a more in depth post about his work on Batman in my main blog.    Suffice to say, seeing so many of my favorite creators pass away this year and so close to one another, has been a major downer.
Since this is a Zatanna blog I checked to see if Grant ever wrote with her in it and sure enough, he did in this little known Elseworlds OGN called ‘JLA: Riddle of the Beast’.
Tumblr media
Set in a fairy tale like world, the main character of the story is Robin Drake who goes on to fulfill a quest involving the Riddler, a radically different Zatanna appears as a mage and Robin Drake’s love interest in the story.
Tumblr media
As evidenced by the name, Robin Drake is likely more based on Tim Drake (since Grant also wrote him several times in the 90′s) than Dick Grayson. Still, who would have guessed there would have been another universe besides Young Justice where Robin and Zatanna are an item?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The art style is also beautiful and worth flipping through just to admire the art. This OGN had an army of pencillers working on it:  Mike Kaluta, Andrew Robinson, Hermann Mejia, Carl Critchlow, Alex Horley, Liam Sharp, Martin Williams, Glenn Fabry, Doug Alexander Gregory, Rafael Garres, Jon Foster, Saverio Tenuta, Jim Murray, John Watson, Greg Staples and Simon Davis.
Anyway, I thought this would be interesting for those of you who are not just Zatanna and YJ fans but also fans of fantasy like LOTR.
I’m always happy to share the works of Alan Grant (RIP).

I tried to draw a mix of American/Greg Martin Sonic and my own style.

I think because of how bright sonic levels (especially green hill) are, it doesn't look as good with a background.

New Fiction 2022 - June
The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete - "3 Kings" ed. Richard Challoner (1752)
Okay so now Solomon's in charge and there's no war so things are good? Except he's going around murdering enemies Godfather-style. And now a parade of kings as we run down the list and deeds of the rest of David's successors.
The Bible, Douay-Rheims, Complete - "4 Kings" ed. Richard Challoner (1752)
I think Eliseus is the star here? But the details of the chapters are more scattered. Perhaps due to winding down the chronicle of the kings. Hazael, Jezrahel, Jezabel, oh my. Oh shit Jehu will not stand for Baal worship. Dang, and Jerusalem has fallen!
Tales of the Dominion War - "What Dreams May Come" by Michael Jan Friedman (2004)
The complacency of fools something something.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Night of the Vulture" by Greg Cox (2004)
As close to Cannibal Holocaust as Star Trek gets.
Tales of the Dominion War - "The Ceremony of Innocence is Drowned" by Keith R.A. DeCandido (2004)
Put up your walls and a gun for every good citizen.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Blood Sacrifice" by Josepha Sherman & Susan Schwartz (2004)
Impatience is a sign of having lived too long.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Mirror Eyes" by Heather Jarman & Jeffrey Lang (2004)
If your place is compromised, that’s your new place.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Twilight's Wrath" by David Mack (2004)
Slash the throat of your master to serve you and yours.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Eleven Hours Out" by Dave Galanter (2004)
The only place to go is the way ahead.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Safe Harbors" by Howard Weinstein (2004)
Call them all in, we’re alone.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Field Expediency" by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore (2004)
Desperation will keep you from seeing it all.
Tales of the Dominion War - "A Song Well Sung" by Robert Greenberger (2004)
When your enemy leaves you bare.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Stone Cold Truths" by Peter David (2004)
The children only know what they see and hear.
Tales of the Dominion War - "Requital" by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels (2004)
What will you do, when you find it?
Dracula Daily - "June" by Bram Stoker & ed. Matt Kirkland (1897)
A slow and obvious realization that your friend is not your friend.
Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton (1990)
The lecture-style of story-telling wears just a bit too thin for my tastes.
"Aquarium" by NoneToon (2022)
It’s hard to make friends, wouldn’t you agree?
"Making art in America. 👁👄👁" dir. Angie Wang (2022)
Please find a way.
Montana Story dir. Scott McGehee (2022)
Leave when you have to leave. Your place is where you choose to be.
Crimes of the Future dir. David Cronenberg (2022)
The subtle ways in which we fall apart.
Watcher dir. Chloe Okuno (2022)
👍👍👍
Jurassic World Dominion dir. Colin Trevorrow (2022)
Give DeWanda Wise her own adventure movie/series.
Top Gun: Maverick dir. Joseph Kosinski (2022)
Get your planes, get your guns, step right up.
G.I. Joe: The Movie dir. Don Jurwich (1987)
Better with no context whatsoever.
Elvis dir. Baz Luhrmann (2022)
That new Elvis biopic is more entertainment than history, but it still helped me get why Elvis was a big deal after growing up on 90s media made by 70s kids who treated him as a joke. And Austin Butler's portrayal of Elvis is :chefskiss:.
The Black Phone dir. Scott Derrickson (2022)
It sets up all the pieces perfectly.
Lightyear dir. Angus MacLane (2022)
I like space and I like adventures but when you’re Pixar there’s a burden to deliver on a certain level of charm that is missing here.
The Cat Returns dir. Hiroyuki Morita (2004)
A neat little fantasy, and you know, I didn’t realize how much I missed whimsical fantasy adventures with some small measure of risk.
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On dir. Dean Fleischer-Camp (2022)
Marcel’s got the improv quips and a lovely story about what it means to stick to family or to let them go.
Goosebumps - "My Hairiest Adventure" (1996)
Body hair and its many wonders.
Goosebumps - "It Came from Beneath the Sink" (1996)
Stick to the book, although it’s neat seeing the beginnings of an actor who went on to success in the horror genre.
Goosebumps - "The Barking Ghost" (1997)
Woof.
Goosebumps - "Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes" (1996)
Sometimes I see that a given book has been adapted for television and try to imagine how they would’ve pulled it off on a low TV budget of the 90s. And with this one, I fretted over the fact that unless they chose to use expensive stop-motion animation, they’d probably find a way to have little people dressed up as lawn gnomes. Sure enough...
Goosebumps - "Shocker on Shock Street" (1997)
Love the book, not the TV episode. Gonna fret any time a fucked up book ending gets swapped for a more tame TV-friendly version.
Goosebumps - "Haunted Mask II" (1996)
You didn’t have to redo everything from the first one. The book knew that.
Goosebumps - "The Headless Ghost" (1996)
Oh. You know, you had something there at the end. A comeuppance would’ve been good.
Goosebumps - "How I Got My Shrunken Head" (1998)
The book was vague in its exact location and cultural references but the TV episode makes it much more specific about which backward people the white westerners have decided to enslave.
