A female humpback whale had become entangled in a spider web of crab traps and lines. She was weighted down by hundreds of pounds of traps that caused her to struggle to stay afloat. She also had hundreds of yards of line rope wrapped around her body, her tail, her torso, a line tugging in her mouth. When she was free, the divers say she swam in what seemed like joyous circles. She then came back to each and every diver, one at a time, nudged them, and pushed gently, thanking them. Some said it was the most incredibly beautiful experience of their lives. Grey Whales at Laguna San Ignacio Laguna San Ignacio is the other large lagoon that is part of the Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve (UNESCO World Heritage Site), where grey whales come to mate and rare their young baby whales. The lower lagoon near the mouth and entrance to the Pacific Ocean is where whales congregate on hundreds. It was quite a different experience here from the Ojo de Liebre lagoon - windier and more fog, with the surrounding landscape of mountains and smaller dunes. The whales were less eager to approach the boats but rather more interested in jumping and breaching and spyhopping and even mating. Yes, we witnessed whale sex!
