Chizuru's demise
The moon hung low in the night sky, casting an eerie glow over the silent clearing.
Chizuru's anguished scream pierced the stillness as Okita's sword found its mark, plunging into her chest with a sickening thud.
Her tear-streaked face locked in a gaze with her lover, now consumed by madness.
Roughly he withdrew the blade, leaving her gasping for breath on the blood-soaked ground.
Okita's once mad smile faltered, replaced by a look of horror as reality crashed down upon him.
"Chizuru?" His voice wavered, betraying his disbelief at the tragedy that unfolded before him.
The sword slipped from his grasp, forgotten in the grass as he knelt by her side, he clung to her fading warmth, pleading for forgiveness that could never come.
"I'm so sorry!" His words were a whispered plea, drowned out by his own sobs of regret. Pressing a shaking hand to her chest, he begged for forgiveness again and again, knowing that his actions had sealed her fate.
As Chizuru's life slipped away, her lips moved in a silent attempt to convey her final thoughts to the man who had unwittingly brought about her demise.
"Don't worry, I won't let you die alone, I will be right behind you!" Said Okita. "Will you wait for me?!" Okita's voice cracked with despair, his promise to follow her into the unknown a testament to his love and guilt.
But as her eyes closed and her breath stilled, a shattered silence descended upon the clearing, leaving Okita to face the damning truth of his cursed existence. The only girl who ever loved him and cared enough about him is gone, and he is the one who took her life, by his own fury madness. Is he the cursed child who bring nothing but misery to those around him?
He gently placed her down in the ground and then he grabbed his sword and took a deep breath, ready to die. His vision blurred as he raised the sword high in front of him.
Then he heard a voice. Singing words that made him stop for a second.
"Cherry trees are abloom in their full splendor
I know I'll remember you
Play with me forever
I know I'll remember you
Forever and evermore."
As if in a trance, he lowered the sword and started walking down the dirt path, following the voice.

Last night, I dreamt of sitting on a bus, probably on a long ride somewhere. Sōji was sitting in the seat row behind, diagonally across from me. Then his hand crept out from between the two seater, mine went back to meet his and we silently held hands, comforting each other.

I dreamed about Sano last night.
He wore his usual red and white outfit, but his hair was slightly different. It was in the messy ponytail he typically wears, but his bangs were white tipped? (Similar to the ombre black to white of Lucifer's hair from Obey me).
All I remember was him smiling at me, and I woke up. 😭❤️ It was great.

Iba's Short Story from the Manyo no Shou Limited Edition Booklet
Happy 15th anniversary to Hakuoki!!
This is Iba's story from the Manyo no Shou booklet and it's lovely:)
Super tired from a long week of work but I just received a package load of Hakuoki merch and that simply made my day!
This short story was written by 長野 和泉
(It’s been a long time since I last walked on the streets of Kyoto…)
I was taking in the vibes of the city as I heard the merchants talking in that soft Kyoto dialect and smelled the scent of incense that drifted from the numerous temples and shrines.
(I wonder how Toshi-san and the Shinsengumi are doing. And also–)
After finishing my business, I headed towards the Shinsengumi headquarters at Nishi Honganji Temple in a hurry.
(I wonder how Chizuru-chan is doing.)
I told Toshi-san beforehand that I was coming to Kyoto, but I wondered how she would react.
Just imagining that child’s expression and voice made my heart skip a beat.
(I have a lot of stories to tell her as souvenirs. Which one should I start with? )
As I thought about these things, I hurriedly went on the way to the headquarters.
“Iba-san, I brought you some tea. “
Chizuru-chan, who greeted me at the headquarters, said in a soft voice and placed a teacup in front of me.
“Thank you very much.”
It’s been a long time since I heard her voice like this. Her voice is calm and sweet like a wind chime, and I feel like I’m in a nostalgic dream whenever I hear her talking. Even though I can talk to her every time I come to Kyoto, somehow I never get tired of it.
“How are things going in Edo? Has it changed a lot after we were gone?”
Toshi-san asked me, thinking it would be a good topic.
“Yes, that’s right. I don’t think the jōka (land near the castle) has changed much, but the seaside area might have changed a lot …Oh, that reminds me!”
I remembered something as Toshi-san spoke, and I untied the furoshiki I brought with me. Then I took out several ukiyo-e prints from inside.
“These are… ukiyo-e prints depicting the scenery of Edo?”
“Yes. I thought you might feel nostalgic about them. I’m sorry that this is the only thing that I can do.”
“Hey, hey, what are you saying? We’re grateful to you for letting us know about the situation in Edo and giving us useful information from the shogunate.”
“I’m glad to hear you say that…”
It was much more satisfying to be praised by Toshi-san than to be recognized by anyone else.
But I was worried about Chizuru-chan because she was quiet all the while we were talking, and I looked back at her.
“Chizuru-chan? You’ve been quiet for a while… You didn’t find what we were talking about interesting?”
I chose the Edo souvenirs with good intentions, but did it only make her feel more homesick? I felt anxious as I watched her reaction. Then she answered with a somewhat feeble smile.
“No, it’s not that…I miss the scenery of Edo a lot.”
“That’s good, but…”
I said that, but I felt that there was something different from the usual Chizuru-chan, and I couldn’t help but feel worried.
Then Toshi-san answered for her.
“Sorry, Hachirō. We’ve had a lot of sick people lately. Because of that, we’ve been asking Yukimura to help us with the patients, even at midnight. It’s not that she doesn’t like your souvenirs, so don’t worry.”
“Really? Is that true?”
I was surprised by Toshi-san’s words, and I regretted not noticing her poor condition sooner.
“I’m sorry. In that case, you should have some rest, and I’m sorry for making you brew tea for me.”
“It’s alright, so please don’t worry. I’m just a little sleepy, it’s not that I’m feeling bad or anything.”
Maybe she was worried about me, but what she said made me feel even more sorry.
(I’m no good, am I? I am so excited to talk to Chizuru-chan after such a long time of parting, but I can’t even take care of her properly …)
If things go on like this, it would be just wishful thinking to become her lover––
“…I appreciate the tea, but please go back to your room and rest,” I suggested.
“Eh, but…”
“I enjoy talking to you, of course. But I don’t want you to overdo your work for my sake.”
She looked confused and sent a look to Toshi-san as if asking for his opinion.
Then, Toshi-san said…
“Don’t be so self-effacing. You two hardly ever see each other recently, right? She must have a lot of things she wants to share with you.”
Toshi-san’s words were, in a way, a bolt from the blue for me.
“She wants to talk to me…?”
I asked involuntarily, and Toshi-san nodded.
“Yeah. You’re childhood friends, right? And you hardly ever see each other. She must have a lot of things she wants to share, even if she’s feeling a bit sick or sleepy.”
Still feeling incredulous, I looked back at Chizuru-chan.
“Is that true, Chizuru-chan?”
Then she nodded to my question.
“Yes, of course. But I will go back to my room if that’s your wish…”
I couldn’t tell her to go back to her room after she said that.
“No, please stay here! I also… have a lot of things that I would like to share with you!”
I answered with the happiest words that my beloved just uttered.
While showing her the ukiyo-e prints, I started to talk about the recent situation in Edo.
Chizuru-chan listened to me with nostalgia and joy.
“Please tell me more about Edo, Iba-san.”
She asked me, and I tried to be brief with my stories many times, but I just couldn’t…
Time flew by in an instant.
Eventually, it was time to go back to the inn, and I had to leave the headquarters.
“Thank you for today. I’m sorry for making you worry about me because of my condition.”
“No, please don’t say that. I’ll come to visit you again when you’re feeling better. Let’s talk more then.”
“Yes… please do.”
“Well then… I’ll excuse myself for today.”
A wave of reluctance rushed over me as I turned my back on Chizuru-chan and walked away.
(I can’t believe I didn’t notice that she is in low spirits. I’m so immature. It’s just wishful thinking that I can win her hand like this…)
I was happy to see the face of my loved one after a long time, but I was also confronted by my own immaturity.
(I still don’t have the confidence to stand by her side. )
(But, if I can grow up a bit more… and become a man worthy of her, then maybe…)
I renewed my vow as I headed to the inn.

The divergence that starts here should be reused at the end of the main story after the game's been completed [i think???? the first sentence was super confusing].

My thoughts on the Okita musical. Pictures and rambling under the cut for my non-Hakumyu followers who probably wish I would just shut up about it already.
So, I don't know if I made it clear before, but I think Okita's route is my favourite in the game of what I've played so far, and one of my favourite characters. I think I waited too long to finish watching the musical after playing it and wish it didn't take me so long to finish watching it, because my memory is already getting a little fuzzy on the details of the game even though I think I still remember a fair bit of the overall story. I just felt like I was having trouble being certain about some of the differences but then again, it's OK not to compare and just enjoy it mostly for what it is.
I've posted about it already, but the song about Okita's relationship to Kondou was really moving to me, and the first time I watched that song I cried a little. Kondou and Okita's relationship makes me soft.
While I found Kaoru a really compelling villain in the game and we did get his backstory in the musical (plus the actor playing him was really into being evil) I'm still not sure I connected with him in the same way. The moment below where he reveals Chizuru is his sister is funny, though, because of Chizuru's shocked expression. Perhaps unintentionally funny, but that reaction shot got me.
And of course their duet together is so much fun, anachronistic microphone and all.
Other than Kaoru, though, who is the main demon in this story, I felt that the inclusion of Shiranui, Kazama, and Amagiri felt a little extraneous and forced in. I guess to some extent they comment on things and are another rival to fight, but I didn't feel they added enough to the story to warrant the demon clan song. But maybe that's just me.
As for the development of Okita and Chizuru's relationship, I thought the way they portrayed it was pretty satisfying.
I liked the way they did this dream scene, the transition was so quick I was wondering "How did they do that?" Of course, it's an ensemble member playing Okita in the dream, but it took me by surprise. I love theatre magic! Also, this scene gave us a sense of how Okita is feeling, which I liked.
I liked how things came together with repeating the dream scenario again, having it play out in his head before "rewinding" to reality to show him coming between Kaoru and Chizuru before Kaoru can hurt her. I think it was perhaps a bit messy, I was wondering why Okita looked like he was falling through the air, but the message came across for the most part.
Interestingly, I think one of the things that his musical does really well (and what I've seen of some of the others, this is the case in the other musicals as well) is the blood-drinking scenes. When I first got into Hakuoki I found those scenes kind of uncomfortable even though I understood the purpose and still liked the story. I don't usually like how the characters are drawn in the CGs for those scenes in the game, but I think the scenes in the musical convey the tenderness and intimacy really well. Even when Okita is literally licking Chizuru's hand in the first one in this musical, there's something touching and tender in it, to me. Maybe I'm a freak, but that's how I felt watching it.
I was quite happy to see they included the one where Chizuru and Okita drink each other's blood. This might not be the most popular opinion among fans, but I think there's so much intimacy in that scene, it almost makes up for the fact that Okita and Chizuru don't kiss in this musical. The scene is one you can only select in the game for the bad endings, but I think it should be included with the good ending.
The way they sing "Aaaahh-aaah" together as they both bear themselves to each other, the fact that what they sing together uses the melody from Paint It Blood, the way they each sheath their swords at the same time at the end. Aaahh! I didn't cry, but I pretty much turned into a pile of mush, it was so satisfying and moving. I think I'm using those words too much, but I'm not sure how else to say it right now. I just loved the way it beautifully brought the characters together and the way Paint It Blood became a love theme.
Speaking of emotions, the reprise of Yaisa! Yaisa! Yaisa! gave me some!
Hijikata imagining talking to Kondou-san as he continues to fight... oof.
I thought the confrontation scene between Okita and Hijikata, which was one of the scenes that moved me the most in the game (partly because of the actors' voices), was also pretty good in this. We don't get to actually see Okita hit Hijikata in the game, it's not in the CG, but it definitely hit home in the musical the emotions Okita was feeling.
And then finally at the end of the musical after Kaoru has been defeated, we finish with another hug and notice Koaru's body in the background. I think a hug does make more sense than a kiss given the situation, and I just really like this tableau. Chizuru has lost a lot, and will lose Okita eventually, but right now they hold each other, and he wants to protect her.
So yeah, good job on Okita-hen, everyone (she says, about ten years after they already made it). I wouldn't be averse to Shinkai Okita-hen, which is a surprise to no one. Maybe we can even let them kiss this time? That CG is a really nice one...

So many reasons. He's already married, he's a jerk to his wife, he's already slept with at least one of the other romance options. That romance option goes to you before a date with Jospeh and damn near begs you not to be stupid and go with him. The worst part? You put up with all this and he leaves you to "work things out with his wife". She deserves so much better than him! One of the writers even said he's a sociopath.
Married and a youth minister.
Cheater, cringe man, father of creepy children, possibly evil cultist, left a guy feeling used which said guy also became friends with Joseph's wife who appears to be an alcoholic likely as a coping mechanism since she's married to Joseph
He cheats on his wife, has done so before, lies to you by claiming that he's going to leave his wife when he clearly never intends to (and, in one ending, will even cheerfully suggest that you two continue having an affair in an extremely sleazy way), and judging by the fact that the other guy we know he cheated on his wife with, Robert, hates Joseph and is now very close friends with his wife, it seems clear to me that this whole "purposefully mislead someone into sleeping with you and then later drop the bomb that it was an affair" thing is repeat behavior with him. Also, I just find much of his behavior to be very manipulative and controlling; there are many situations where it seems to me that he's actively trying to paint others in a negative light while still coming off as saintly himself, such as an early scene where he subtly implies his wife is a shitty mom because she *checks notes* let their toddler out of her sight... during a neighborhood barbecue in a fenced-in yard surrounded by trusted adults and other kids. Also notice how in this scene he pushes *her* to go look for their son, rather than just looking himself, all while keeping up his "long-suffering husband" act. (and in other scenes can be found letting his other young children wander off into the woods with sharp implements and visibly not caring, but whatever). He does this with Robert, too -- the other guy he had an affair with. Almost everything he says about or to Robert is a subtle jab about his personality or his alcoholism. Classy, Joseph. Meanwhile, the fact that you can't actually end up with him in the end (because he was never going to leave his wife for you) started some of the most volatile discourse in the fandom and had people calling the devs homophobic and claiming they were spreading a message about "gay men needing to stay in loveless abusive marriages to women" (just ignore the fact that there are several other divorced gay dads in this game who all have great relationships with their kids and are not demonized in the slightest). HOWEVER, if you see people claiming he's a cultist or demon or something, that's untrue and was just going to be a non-canon spooky alternate ending that ended up getting cut. So I empathize with him a little bit for getting literally demonized by some fans for that cut alt ending. But he loses all those points by cheating on his wife multiple times and showing clear intent to continue doing so.
He's still married when you start dating him. He's also got like 5 kids that are some "children of the corn" kinda shit, and all their names have "Christ" in them
You don't even get to date him he's still married to his wife who he doesn't get along with. Tragic really

A mad scientist and manipulative bastard. He turn himself into a monster after an injury to his sword arm and is straight up the big bad in one of the routes, where he also forces a kiss onto the MC. Heck, even in his own route he is purposely trying to make the MC hate him.

I feel like you would really enjoy the dream daddy dating sim
Hahaha - I have actually \o/
Before I started writing I played probably 20 dating sim games. Mostly Otomes, mind you, but Dream Daddy Dating was one of them.
I never finished it, but I did enjoy it. I got side tracked by Collar X Malice (where my favorite arc is voiced by the VA for Eustass though I would have NEVER guessed.)
Collar X Malice’s “true” route is voice by Marco’s VA so if there’s a route I’mma be replaying soon it’s that one.
I really liked Nightshade as well, and Hakuoki was what really got me into the genre in the first place, thanks to a friend’s recommendation. Olympia Soirée is another solid one, Amnesia was solid too - Bad Apple Wars was different but good, though I wasn’t a fan of most of the endings, sadly.
Pirfoire - which I’m sure I’m spelling wrong is a great early 1900’s mafia title I really enjoyed as well.
Collar X Malice, by the way, is the inspiration for Between the Three of Us, so if the detective agency’s office layout sounds a little familiar it’s because I leaned on the game’s design.
Those are the only titles I can think of off the top of my head, but I was playing titles on my Vita, Switch and Steam xD

All the Okita in Otome, ranked. Or not.
I had a bit of a hiatus while dealing with real life and shit, but I finally got around to playing all the games I know have been translated into English. Here’s the ultimate ranking of all the variations of my otome husbando.
Destined to Love (Cybird)
Please please please can you pull this app and redo it as Ikémen Bakumatsu with Yamada doing the art? I cannot deal with Okita, Sōji Okita of the Shinsengumi, whose swordmanship is nothing short of legendary, looking like some edgy marshmallow. C’mon, guys. You’re taking all sorts of liberties with history already, why stop there and not make him look the part? Just make Hijikata even hotter, everything will be fine.
Era of Samurai: Code of Love (Voltage)
Still one of my favourites even after venturing into the realm of premium games, although he looks too much like Leon for my liking (I guess that’s what you get with Voltage and also a byproduct of my refusal to even contemplate ever liking that lion even though, like for Iori in SITS, I clearly do and I just refuse to admit it, although I did exactly that a moment ago). His modern AU stereotypical indie kid version is everything. It’s like they made him for me.
Hakuoki (Otomate/Idea Factory)
Why do I love this Morikubo-voiced jerk more than my actual life? I have many questions to ask of myself and I don't even know if I really want to know the answers, but I have spent about £50 so he can be on my wall alongside another less jerky Morikubo character in what is slowly and not deliberately turning into a shrine to the man himself since his characters dominate my merch purchases. (Author’s note: This post has been a cumulative draft over a year or so, and I wrote this pre-Piofiore. It’s only gone worse since)

Side note, what is it with games making Harada the hot one? Also let me romance this Hijikata please and thank you.
He’s hella cute and double-faced, which I tend to like, but also he appears to go through every trope I don’t like in the span of a conversation. 6/10, although solid 10 for looks. In fact, make it 20/10. Top 3 for looks with Voltage and Hakuoki.
Ninja Shadow
I keep forgetting that I did play this Okita (and it was my first while at that...) but even with that dream ponytail it’s not the greatest version. He’s a jokester, which is fun, and he hides a big dollop of angst as it’s right and just, but he was a bit OTT with the humour and it’s a strange storyline that does him a disservice.
Bakumatsu Renka Shinsengumi
If he doesn’t threaten to kill you is he even Okita? I’m living for that one CG that looks like he is Kondō and Hijikata’s kid, but aside from it being probably the most historically accurate of the otome portrayals (at least in localised games) he started off a bit of a disappointment for the same reason as Destined to Love. He was also not helped by the fact that Shinpachi has a brain, Sakamoto and Yamazaki exist and (omg, can’t believe I’m saying this) Hijikata and that line about loving his woman in Sanan’s route. However, when actually playing his scenes etc, he grew on me. I would happily go raise cats and babies with him like I would with his Hakuoki and Era of Samurai incarnations.
Dateless Love
I have questions. Why is this version Iba’s lovechild with Saito?
Why is he like Gin in Ayakashi Gohan if he was a soldier? Don’t get me wrong, I’m a major sucker for lovely characters going full on deadly from a moment to the next, so I’m digging it, I’m just extremely disoriented because Voltage is my canon Okita personality (Hakuoki took that and turned it up a notch and ruined my life in the process) and every deviation I’m like “new number who dis?”
It took him 10 chapters to show a hint of the teasing we all know and love. TEN. Out of like 15. I have had three kids with Tokugawa by now (and I don’t even do blondes. Except Ayumu. And best boy. And omg I’m still in the Kiro phase but also could be a Helios phase soooo 🫣 okay, fine, I do blondes). It was really cute tho and I watched him die in the good ending which is a plus.
