The Last
slow building apocalyptic thriller
an american academic is at a conference in a remote Swiss hotel when a nuclear apocalypse strands him with just 20 others
50 days in, a body is found in a watertank and he becomes obsessed with investigating to find out who did it
even though the remaining people are just trying to quietly survive as supplies slowly dwindle and the winter approaches
#the last#hanna jameson#aroaessidhe 2023 reads#so I read this because there’s an aromantic side character!#she’s an interesting/complex character who has a friends w benefits thing with the MC#a few stereotypes but like she actively counters them#the only weird thing about it is that it’s implied she’s a republican who voted for the ppl who started the nuclear war…..#like. would a right wing person identify as aro lmao#but also like i’m okay with not all ‘representation’ being good people.#as for the rest of the actual book i found it quite interesting overall!#i enjoyed that it wasn’t just 'fighting dangerous people to survive' immediately like a lot of the postapoc genre#(though i wonder how much food they had to be fine for 2 months??)#though there is a bit of that in places when they leave the hotel#a lot of interesting characters and like.....discussion on what different kinds of people would do in that situation#the australian accent (audiobook) of the australian character…..not sure about that LMAO#also I don’t believe the internet would still function after half the world has blown up? like this thing needs upkeep right#there’s a bit where the MC is talking to two dudes who start talking like: so are we gonna repopulate society?#and being creepy about the women. and the MC is obviously like: yikes!#but also nobody even suggests like……we could just die? without repopulating humanity whatever the fuck that means?#why is that concept not even brought up?????? i am horrified that anyone would consider having children in that scenario. christ.#anyway i guess yeah overall a few things im like hm about but it's a pretty good book#aromantic books#(also the MC has a wife on the other side of the world but like. there's not any actual romance. his thing with the aro woman is offpage)

Review: Are You Happy Now by Hanna Jameson
Tumblr media
I am always drawn to books that sound like they might be about something a bit different. As soon as I read the line 'a wedding guest sits down and refuses to get back up' in the synopsis, I was interested to know what was going on. So, here we are.
Yun has everything but nothing ever feels like it's enough. Emory is making a name for herself but she can't escape the shame. Andrew can't stop lying to himself even though he wants to. Fin keeps falling in love and destroying it. All over the world, people start to sit down and they never get back up again. No one really knows whether it's a pandemic or a choice but the real question is whether anyone can really be happy in this world.
Tumblr media
The uniqueness of the situation was definitely my favourite part of the book. I was completely hooked on finding out what was happening to these people and why. I'm actually really disappointed that it wasn't exactly revealed but on reflection, I think it was probably more of a symbolic thing and commentary on the chaos of our world. They were simply sitting down and checking out of it.
Tumblr media
Emory is a journalist reporting on the strange events and she feels awful about the success her work is having in the wake of the horrors of what is happening. It means she can't fully enjoy her moment in the sun and I think this is something that many people can relate to. There are often factors that contribute to the good things that we do that aren't exactly positive things themselves and it can be hard to accept that.
Tumblr media
All of the four main characters are trying to find and questioning their happiness. It seems that none of them know what happy really is or how to find it. Yun's ex-wife tells him that his idea of happiness is a fantasy and that he should try to lower his expectations. Again, this is probably a lesson that many people need to learn.
Tumblr media
The book is quite philosophical but depressingly so. It's almost questioning whether anyone at all is ever happy. Perhaps this appeals to pessimists and deep dark thinkers but the tone of it just really put me in a slump. It was whiny and I didn't really care about any of the characters enough to listen to them for pages on end.
Tumblr media
Much of the public speculation on the causes and nature of the situation felt very similar to how COVID was talked about. If there had been any chance of COVID being deemed a 'choice', I have no doubt that the sick pay would have stopped and treatment would have been hard to come by. In fact, this is precisely how many mental health conditions are seen by governments and authorities.
Are You Happy Now is a strange one to review. I was very intrigued by the situation but without the definite answers, I was left disappointed. None of the characters were particularly likeable, so I wasn't really interested in their search for happiness. It is quite a thought-provoking read and I really liked the core idea but I'm not sure it was executed terribly well.

monty & zoe ^^
who is the bigger romantic openly? secretly?
i think they both gleefully indulge in that ^_^ like we got some real sweeties here don't we. i could see them both genuinely going back and forth paying for dates (even as they grow older and share a bank account), i don't think there's a birthday or an anniversary that passes without some sort of grand gesture made. i think more so than i love you and i'm gonna make it everyone else's problem they have a sense of humor about it and sure. they're still making it everyone else's problem. but for the giggles
who is more likely to plan something big for valentine’s day?
see above. they're both very much in this game. god mod the most epic one for the books is zoe having monty sent some flowers and one of those massive teddy bears right to his classroom and he spent the rest of the school day giving it piggyback ride through the hallways
who developed a crush on the other first?
see i know we have lore that you've developed for their relationship but unfortunately it isn't what [redacted] was wearing the first time we met so it just does not take up any real estate in my brain. i can only remember nonsensical things. but my impulse would be to say monty maybe liked zoe first. i kind of imagine zoe to reflect the very best that there was in darcy, being that they were so close, but also she kind of walked in and dream-came-trued it for him, like sabrina carpenter said. unfortunately i stopped responding to this question half way thru and it was unfinished when i went to post so here we are :nerd: but i feel like you know where i was going. you know where i was going, right? just kidding i do vaguely remember all the stuff about
who spends time reading their zodiac compatibilities?
they both do, monty actually led with that on a date in their earliest days and i imagine zoe found it endearing, thanks! but i do think he's weirdly into astrology like he knows his big 3 and all that. he's not ran thru though.
who is more protective?
i mean i guess it depends in what sense i'm saying like if something went bump in the night monty would do the noble thing and scope things out while zoe stayed behind BUT he has been pwned publicly a time or two in the teacher's lounge by the head of the physical education department who wants zoe soooo bad so he's certainly not mr. macho
who tends to get sick more often? who is better at taking care of the other?
monty gets sick in the way that every man gets sick he needs his back rubbed and his forehead kissed PRONTO!
who cooks the dinner, and who washes the dishes?
i hate to answer every question saying they do this equally<3 but that's kind of how i feel. i imagine it switching up between them.
who does the majority of the driving?
sorry see above but a bonus godmod headcanon is that zoe's gotta drive something really really cute like a jeep renegade right?
whose family do they celebrate more holidays with?
i was gonna say the hannas and that i'd just caught a vibe but then i really doubled down on the hannas because i remembered the jameson/orla of it all. god i love this plot i wanna go to their thanksgiving soooo bad

I need 13 books for January-March, and narrowed down my possibilities to 16 - which is probably for the best, to give some wriggle room if I need something shorter, or I'm in the mood for something in particular.
The list (not in reading order):
Coldbrook (Tim Lebbon)
Goth (Otsuichi)
The Book of Accidents (Chuck Wendig)
The Troop (Nick Cutter)
Broken Monsters (Lauren Beukes)
The Night Watch (Sergei Lukyanenko)
The Last (Hanna Jameson)
Severance (Ling Ma)
The Graveyard Apartment (Mariko Koike)
Station Eleven (Emily St. John Mandel)
Just Like Mother (Anne Heltzel)
Twelve Nights at Rotter House (J.W. Ocker)
Carrion Comfort (Dan Simmons)
The Only Good Indians (Stephen Graham Jones)
Violet (Scott Thomas)
Wanderers (Chuck Wendig)
(Yes, Wendig made the list twice. I like his stuff!)
I rather like that I'll go through 13 books per quarter. Seems appropriate!
