jam i have a question. who is eliot spencer... where is he from. what makes him ur number one blorbo and what do u understand abt him that no one else does <3

partridge thank you so much for this ask i need you to know you made my entire morning. eliot spencer is. my specialest guy my blorbo of all time i love him so so so so much. he's from the tv show leverage, which aired from 2008-2012* and isn't immune to the downfalls of that era of tv in general but that. honestly does a comparatively outstanding job to ME. it holds up and also the premise is "what if these extremely competent hot thieves ruined shitty rich people's lives and helped the people who'd been victimized by the rich people and created a found family together after all having various levels of sad backstory? and there was an ot3 made as canon as the showrunners could possibly make it in 2012?" i'm getting ahead of myself though.

*there's a sequel currently airing but i have yet to watch it & there's certain aspects about it that i refuse to accept as canon (this is a part of me being the most right about eliot)

i am putting this under the cut because. well. this got long

to start with context. having my brain rewired by supernatural and captain america: the winter soldier when i was a teenager is a huge factor in like. *waves hands vaguely* everything. when it comes to how i came to love leverage and eliot specifically. i got driven away from spn because (to simplify things) the showrunners hated the fans so bad and the characters were fighting the narrative but unable to escape it, and i loved the version of the characters that was actively being opposed by the show. and that was just plain not enjoyable for me. and marvel is marvel and continuity of emotional and interpersonal arcs doesn't matter at all to them.

and the thing is i took a sociology class in 2017 and it was making me so upset learning about white collar crime. and @canis-la-trans was like. we are watching leverage now. to remedy this. and i'd tried watching it with him before but this time around it just clicked. and the biggest part of what clicked is eliot. because listen. eliot is in somewhat of the same category as my earlier favorite characters but the thing about eliot spencer is that all of his best qualities are canon, not fanon. he redefines the category. he's incomprable. to me.

the thing about eliot spencer is he's the punchboy. he's the hitter. it's his job to get in the fights and protect the team. and he does his best to come across as grumpy, as not caring about people, does his best to fly under the radar as just another unintelligent lackey with a short temper who's particularly talented at violence.

but that's a performance. canonically that's a performance. and he has the best work/life separation of the whole team. he's not his job - he's very good at his job, and it's what he does and that is a part of him, but where some of the other characters view their job as an extension of their selfhood, eliot doesn't.

he cooks. he cooks so well that he could do that professionally. he grows all his own produce (allegedly). he's one of if not the best person on the team with kids. he loves so wholly so fast. he's the first person to call the team a we. within team dynamics he & sophie, the grifter, protect the other 2 from the worst of the team leader's dysfunction.

eliot's done bad things in the past. and he views himself completely past saving. like. from commentary on the show: he knows he's going to hell. like. his self worth is completely abysmal. i know he would die for the team. in s2e2 there's an episode where the team isn't succeeding at the con, and he takes the fall on purpose. and in a conversation about that he says "i'm not diving on a grenade. i'll be all right" but he says that so readily that i Know he's thought about it. and he would. for the team he would. for parker and hardison he would. he's in love with them. and they're in love with him too and i have to cut myself off or i'll go an entire separate rant about them!!!!

he has long hair. which he straightens. and he looks great with blood on his face. he doesn't use guns. he never throws the con for personal reasons - only ever does to protect kids. he grew up in rural oklahoma and he enlisted to get the hell out of dodge and he got in such a bad argument with his dad the night before he shipped out that he got disowned. and he can't even talk about it until nearly the end of the final season of the show. he never once mentions his mom. and i just know he got disowned for coming out, intentionally or not. he's never had an environment he could be his full self in without fear until the team.

parker, the thief of the team, is intentionally written as autistic; the hacker, hardison, is so likely written to have adhd. and eliot is autistic too, to me. it makes the level of performing masculinity to closet himself so much more insane to me. bc it's also masking. and adding that context to eliot and parker's relationship makes me unWELL.

the thing is is that eliot is a character who's hiding, who's actively doing his best to be unnoticed. and so many people who watch the show fall for the act, even if they don't fall for the whole act they fall for parts of it, and like. They Are Wrong About Him. i have an entire complex backstory thought up for eliot, because i think the only thing sadder than him missing out on the kind of connection he finds with the team is him knowing what he's missing because he had a queer best friend as a kid, & the two of them were closeted together, but he lost contact with her over the years.

the thing is that eliot spencer has SO MUCH GENDER and i know if he and parker and hardison adopted a kid eliot would be ma. never dad. and i don't think he'd even be able to start exploring that for himself until the end of the series.

the thing is eliot spencer would listen to the mountain goats. and there's a couple other people out there who are right about that and it makes me so insane 100% of the time.

and i love him and this is just a list of facts about him and the most important thing about eliot spencer to me is that. he exists in motion. trying to capture a still image or static description in words never works. but he's my wife and i love him so much. and i always will. and i'm writing a fic where i'm going to blow him up. just a little bit. for his own good. this is my "eliot made himself a mountain goats mix tape about knowing he's willing to jump on a bomb for parker and hardison & never telling them that in advance" playlist from that universe.

Rubber Band Man

Adam Evans was a young man who grew up in Dakota City.  An aspiring musician, Adam had a true knack for writing rap songs and he made a demo tape for the acclaimed music producer, D.J. Rock.  Rock claimed not to be interested in Adam’s music, yet secretly stole his lyrics and used them to make his own protégé, ‘Ice Pack,’ and hugely successful hiphop star.   When Adam discovered he had been swindled he was furious; and yet there was nothing he could do about it.  

All this changed when Adam was exposed to the mutagenic effects of the Quantum Vapor were released during the so-called 'Big Bang' event.  Adam was bestowed shapeshifting powers wherein his body became highly elastic, enabling him to elongate his limbs and manipulate his form in various fashions.  Now calling himself ‘The Rubber Band Man’ Adam made himself a costume and set out to get revenge on Ice Pack and DJ Rock.  

The heroic Static witnessed Rubber Band Man going after Ice Pack and attempted to intervene.  This would prove to be the first in numerous altercations between the two.  Static prevailed and the Rubber Band Man was apprehended; while DJ Rock was exposed as a thief and fraud.    

The Rubber Band Man would later escape form prison and would have further dealings with Static.  Eventually, Rubber Band Man became something of an antihero and aided Static in dealing with the villainous schemes of his older brother, Ebon.  

Actor Kadeem Hardison provided the voice for The Rubber Band Man, with the villain turned hero first appearing in the fifth episode of the first seasons of Static Shock, ‘They’re Playing My Song.’

Three ships: Obligated to say chargestep (and chargeflystep) i am always thinking about Fallen Hero. In the process of rewatching Leverage so the CLASSIC hardison-parker-eliot trio has been on my mind. I'm brain-blanking on like. a third romantic ship I'm currently unwell about, because I'm More Unwell about various Deeply Involved Friendships* currently (Anathema & Arsinoe, Chen & Arsinoe, my various codependent basically-additional-ocs situations, etc.) And also other people's sidesteps' relationships by proxy. Thats super fun to watch.

First ship: Oh god who even knows. We're gonna go with Formative and say Nita and Kit from Young Wizards by Diane Duane, which I know predated middle school. Shout out to Dairine and Roshaun from the same series for being my first "haha i understand this is intended to read as romantic and is probably headed in that direction... but What If..." (formless blob of emotion unable to be placed in a neat box)

Last song: As It Was, Hozier. Playing my Ars playlist quietly in the background.

Currently reading: The Goblin Emperor, by Katherine Addison. Rereading it, but I am Once Again laying on the floor about Kindness and the Decision To Be Kind and respect the personhood of the people you interact with being the most important thing.

Currently craving: apple pancake... which I may have the ingredients for but I do not have the inclination to actually make right now so. Maybe at some point.

Leverage - but don't you shake alone by tragicallynerdy: Trapped in a collapsed building, an injured Eliot and panicking Hardison do what they can to keep each other alive, safe, and whole.

911 - Thicker Than Blood by altschmerzes: Bobby and Buck are in a parking garage when part of the structure collapses, trapping them both inside. The collapse itself isn't too bad. The problem is that Bobby can't find Buck, and is too concussed to remember that Buck is no longer on the blood thinners that could make even a minor injury lethal. Bobby struggles to communicate to the incident commander outside, a stranger, as well as to Athena, exactly why it's so important that he remain inside the collapse. But Buck's never left him behind, even when ordered to. He's not about to betray that in return.

Murdoch Mysteries - S-O-S by Horatio13: He was pinned in a pretty tight pocket, but not tight enough that it was impossible to breathe. Uncomfortably difficult, yes, but definitely possible. His ears were ringing. Something sharp was stabbing in his thigh. He couldn’t feel his fingers on his right hand, but he couldn’t see enough of them to figure out what the problem was. He could feel something wet and sticky starting to pool underneath his legs and stomach. Well, thought George numbly. This is fun.

agents of shield (again i havent finished it but ouhghgoughhghh......found family.....whump.....literally this show was GAME CHANGING for me. i would not be the whump enjoyer i am today if it weren't for the scene where daisy gets shot point blank and lovingly lowered to the ground by the man who shot her. truly. also huge fan of the asian american female lead who is a complex multifaceted character. love her.)

dc's legends of tomorrow (THEEE goofysilly funtimes show of the century. queer found family superheroes who live on a time traveling spaceship and try to protect the timestream from anomalies. they are very, very bad at their job. a zombie apocalypse breaks out in the middle of the american civil war. a giant fluffy teddy bear named beebo fistfights an ancient time demon. they have to save college student barack obama from gorilla grodd. a unicorn bites one of the character's nipples off. truly the most show ever. perhaps of all time.)

kingdom (netflix) (kdrama) (GENUINELY the best zombie media i have ever seen in my life. barring train to busan maybe. the costume design is gorgeous and the camerawork is gorgeous and the characters are complex and multifaceted and the zombies are fascinating and the entire thing is a commentary on class and poverty. and it's set in medieval korea so they have to fight zombies with SWORDS)

carmen sandiego (fun characters. u learn lots of cool things about lots of cool places. found family. heists. nonexistent romance subplots so it's a HUGE win for the aros. stupid little french detective who wears a banana suit onscreen. et cetera.)

leverage (LITERALLY THE SHOW OF ALL TIME. anti capitalist. found family. heists. the government is a corrupt system that only serves the people in power. christian kane beating people up. multifaceted characters. autistic character that's actually like. presented respectfully. and realistically. alec hardison. insane people.)

Leverage: Redemption & Dracula

Look, it's not my fault that I was listening to @re-dracula and realized that Christian Kane would make a spectacular Quincey Morris. And then started imagining Aldis Hodge as Arthur Holmwood, because the way they play off each other. And then started imagining that it was instead a fusion universe with Eliot Spencer doing the Quincey role and Alec Hardison (... wait, it's another AH as AH, kismet!) and here's what I've got so far:

Eliot as Quincey Morris, Quintessential Cowboy (self-evident connection)

Hardison as Arthur Holmwood - Hardison's good at the kind of earnest naïveté and honor of our romantic hero, and also good at missing half the action because unrelated obligations call him away. :P

Parker as Jack Seward - Here's where I'm starting to warp the matchups a bit. I considered Parker for Lucy and the rest of the trio as her suitors, but let's face it: 1) Parker is never gonna be a sweet ingenue, 2) Parker interacting with Renfield et al and having trouble understanding the motives of both neurotypicals and neurodivergents alike, and missing behavioral hints? Perfect.

So I decided to ditch Lucy as a romantic interest. (Let the trio be romantically interinvolved as in Leverage.) Instead, random previously unnamed foster child of Nana's is going to be Lucy Westenra the vamp victim. Hardison/Holmwood would still likely have the strongest connection, and Parker/Seward would be a good awkward devotee and Eliot/Quincey would be a good paternalistic protector.

That leaves a great opening for Breanna as Mina Murray. Someone also closely connected to the Lucy character, someone very clever whom the others both rely on for research and shelter re: field work.

(Breanna's SO can be Jonathan. We can invent a new SO if we like. I ship Mina/Jonathan too hard to accept some other relationship here, especially since none of the Leverage crew scream Jonathan vibes.)

Sophie as Abraham van Helsing - Someone with a lot of intelligence, diverse experiences, tragic personal life but warm found-family relationships? Check. Also a mentor to... okay, too many characters to be a strong parallel to the Dracula canon, but it works for me far, far better than the Leverage!Jack coming back as a Dracula expert. Or really any broad-range expert who plays parent to the whole group.

Harry as Peter Hawkins - There is a lawyer RIGHT THERE in the Dracula text. Someone to be a wealthy backer only distantly connected to the narrative. Or possibly in this version more actively connected.

That's the only fusion stuff I'm committed to, but I do have an evil idea for Drac himself.

Nate as Count Dracula II. In this version, Nate was missing and presumed dead but turned out to have been vampired and, Natelike, destroyed the one who destroyed him and then drank and sulked. Without a support network, it probably wouldn't even need Eeevil Vampire Corruption to make Nate go supervillain.

Anyway. I was pleased with how the character/relationship correspondences worked. I'd love to see if anyone else enjoys it.

Let's get into it.

1- 3 ships: Tsukasa/Tsukushi and their various interpretations. And I'll throw in Sojiro/Yuuki too because they deserve it. Honestly, they blindsided me the first time I read the series and I never got over it.

Willemmy. Obviously.

Parker/Hardison. The Lock and Key.

2 - first ever ship: I'm a shipping fiend so I don't know exactly, but probably something from an anime I watched as a kid. I've never been tied to canon though, so most of my ships have been crack ships or unpopular.

3 - last song: Cupid's Chokehold by Gym Class Heroes. I was thinking about how Will would have to call his parents and tell them,

1: he's back in town

2: he's married

I'd like to think he'd have the same energy as the song. ♪take a look at my girlfriend wife... She's the only one I got♪♪

4- last movie: To be honest, I watch a lot of movie reaction channels, and way more often than I sit to watch movies. I've been thinking I need to watch "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" though. I always have so much fun with it.

@sojirosteacup Spy x Family, the anime. Can you believe I was a manga-only fan until last weekend? (I'm a very slow anime watcher) It's fun to see the story from another perspective (and I'm still getting used to their voices).

A Short History of my Blorbos,

There's a theme here, but I will allow you draw your own conclusions.

Ioluas from Young Hercules. A thief trying to reform while working alongside Hercules at a school for heroes. Dean O'Gorman my beloved, who makes this list twice. Basically figured out how to access fanfiction on AOL because of this man.

Julian Bashir from Deep Space 9. Awkward, arrogant, naive until the show breaks him down into component parts and he emerges a jaded, clear-eyed spy, who still fiercely sticks to his ideals. Just re-watched most of the series 10/10 still my man.

John Bender from Breakfast Club. Just a fucking menace. Angry. Horrible. A bleeding wound. Love 'em. The worst, obviously, but also the best because he is stuck in my bones.

Loki from MCU. I don't have to explain this one, I imagine.

Fili, from The Hobbit. The movies were very bad, but Fili, the doomed prince, had my whole heart. Dean O'Gorman strikes again because honestly they gave him the character depth of a mostly evaporated pond.

Dean Winchester. Crown Prince of Blorbos. Toxic masculinity on the outside, broken caretaker on the inside. What a mess, what a beautiful awful mess.

Brienne of Tarth from Game of Thrones. Love of my life, light of my heart. Probably the most straightforwardly heroic character on the list. My only female blorbo, which shames me, but my god if you only have one....

Hardison from Leverage! He's so fucking clever and loving and funny, god I love him.

My only recent book blorbo (but love him on the show too) Kaz Brekker. He's both a raging asshole AND has a found family that he loves silently. Catnip.

And naturally just like...every single person on OFMD. I cannot choose, don't make me.

Reason why I watch it: look. it's got writing that shows that everyone involved was truly invested in the show. the characters are great they're so competent i love it when characters who are supposed to be good at things actually get to be good at things it's so fucking rare.

Why I started watching it: it had been reccomended to me a few times, flash was on a three week hiatus (back in s1 ) and I was on bedrest and Basically Dying so i needed to watch something that wasn't big hero 6 for the 21st time and Leverage was on hulu.
