I love how the anime adapts the expressions so fluidly. These brief moments were my favorite bits of the manga, a character reacting and they take time to show it…. The anime does it so much justice I pause to stare at each longer.

I wanna talk about how Sousou no Frieren treats heroes and demons, because in my opinion it's masterfully done.
We really only learn about one hero, Himmel. Sure there's the Hero of the South but what do we really know about him besides he had future sight and he died? I'll focus on Himmel. I think what sets Himmel apart is how he acts, in typical hero stories they're portrayed as kind, strong, willing to do what's right, all that nice stuff and while I do think those are good traits for a hero, Himmel is shown differently. We almost never see him fight, every time we see him it is in relation to an action he took that influenced people for the better. He takes on countless detours and quests because he can't turn down people in need, every where he goes he's doing good, when people talk about him they never talk about how strong he was or how cool he was it's always about how his act(s) of kindness changed their lives. They're happier, better people because he came through their town. He changes everywhere he goes for the better because of who he is and how he acts. He quite literally changed the world not because he killed the demon king, but because everywhere he went he improved people's lives, and those people because they are better change more people's lives and it spreads and spreads and spreads until the world is better. From random towns people to our main characters, everyone is better because of him. Look at Frieren for example, a complete stoic who before Himmel just was living her life in the woods doing whatever. But after? She takes on an apprentice, travels from place to place continuing the good Himmel did, she learned so much kindness from him in the relatively short time they spent together. Pre-hero party Frieren would have gone to a town, blended into the background, and moved on. But now? She's taking on quests, helping people, and making lives brighter. Why? In her own words it's what Himmel would have done. Fern owes her life to Himmel despite never meeting him because Heiter took her in because that's what Himmel would have done. Frieren looks after her after Heiter's passing because that's what Himmel would have done. Think of all the good she's doing traveling with Frieren just because of that! It ripples outward forever because of a great hero's influence. In other words, he's not a hero because of his great feats or his power, it's because of who he was and that's how you write a truly great hero.
Now let's talk about demons. People with third grade reading comprehension have made the comparison to real life peoples. That the text is saying that demons being just an irredeemable evil race is racist and compare it to how in real life people do that to justify genocide, but this cannot be further from the truth. Demons in this world are an offshoot of humans like elves and dwarves are. They're similar enough to look like humans, speak like humans, their magic is something special to them but similar enough that with study humans can use it just as well. However demons are truly the farthest thing from humanity you could be. The best way to describe them is how when you see two animals that look so similar but they're in entirely different evolutionary families. How a rabbit and a hare look similar but are so SO very different. Demons are closer to animals in that they do what they can to survive. They trick, they deceive, they hunt. These are not evil things, this is nature. A lion is not evil for hunting in packs to eat one antelope, a bird is not evil for walking a certain way to imitate rain and attract a worm. However when it's applied to something that looks and acts so incredibly human it can be seen that way. The lion ganging up on someone is not a fair fight, the bird is lying to and tricking the worm, these are absurd statements. Demons are a divergent evolution of humanity that cannot comprehend the traits that make us human but will use them to hunt us. They do not understand malice or bonds or guilt or love, they are solitary beings that understand power and magic. They biologically cannot understand it, them learning these emotions is like if a cat suddenly sprouted tentacles, it just can't happen. But because they lack the very traits that make us human while looking so human, they appear evil to us. How could something so human-like act so inhuman? Perform such evil acts without a seconds thought? But they're not evil, they can't even understand evil. Them using maternal love to have someone drop their guard and become easy prey is such a basic thing like waking up in the morning they cannot comprehend why people think it's bad. The problem isn't that one is evil and one is good, it's that evolution set these two species on such polar opposite courses that they truly can never understand each other. Yet they're still so close that there's always that feeling of that things could be worked out, that these two peoples can co-exist, but it is just biologically impossible. And that's tragic, that's heart breaking, for one species to exist peacefully the other must die. These beings so close to us yet so far must die. There's no way around it, no negotiating, no compromise, evolution and nature have played this sick dance to pit these two brothers against each other and it absolutely should hurt your soul, but it must happen.

It feels like the last 28 weeks have been a once in a lifetime experience. To witness a show like this on a weekly basis is a blessing and words can’t describe the sense of loss I feel to see it end. I’ll be thinking of this show for decades like how Frieren thinks back on Himmel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only has it maintained its number 1 of all time status, it’s even gone up higher. No fluke. The people have spoken. FMAB reign is over.
Onto the finale itself, after Fern and Frieren’s results last week it’s time for serie to evaluate the rest of the examinees. She lowkey cooked Denken by calling him washed, but praising him at the same time lol. Glad he passed, better late than never. Never too old to get your education as they say. Übel didn’t even have to speak to pass, four eyes not even showing up to the exam was a crazy twist, just off that alone he deserved to pass. Ol girl passing just because she said Serie was cute and small is like bribing the teacher lmao.
To think that Denken’s reason for becoming a mage was due in part to his admiration for Frieren’s deeds in the hero’s party is so cool. Glad he regained his love and joy for the fun aspect of magic after this exam. Even at his age, still learning new things.
Tumblr media
Enjoyed the conversation with Frieren and Wirbel as well. I never would have taken him for being the kind person who values the “insignificant” moments in life, like helping a random person with things they’ve dropped. All thanks to the influence of Himmel and his party. It had to be surreal for these people to have taken the test with Frieren, someone who they idolised.
Tumblr media
Serie so childish for not letting Frieren in the ceremony lol. It’s funny she does all this big talk about other people and still can’t express her emotions. A big tsundere at the end of the day, but Flamme and every single one of her students meant the world to her. Wish she’d tell Lermen one day before he dies how important he is to her. It’s sad that even at his old age he feels he still needs to prove himself to her by defeating Frieren. Like Frieren said, these mages can be so awkward.
Choosing a spell that cleans laundry as your reward is such a Fern thing to do lol.
Tumblr media
LOVED the final “tearful goodbyes aren’t our style” flashback to Himmel. The ending of the episode itself felt like that as well. Not gonna cry cause I know we’ll get more of this beautiful series some day. 🙏🏾 thank you Madhouse for this masterclass. You won’t be forgotten, just like Himmel.

Sousou no Frieren- Tickle Headcanons
This anime has me in a chockehold and ain't letting me go so soon so I might as well share all the daydreams and thoughts living in my mind rent free since I watched it and decided that!!! Hey!!! I can add tickles to that!!!
Anyway, at first I was going to just write about Himmel and a few other selected characters from both adventures but GOSH suddenly all out of nowhere I start daydreaming about ALL OF THEM and so... This long post was born. kjhgfdfghjklkj not all of them are going to be very long and it can be OOC but I hope you still like to read it as much as I liked to write! <3
[~*~]
Himmel
Tumblr media
(We are not going to talk about how much time I spent trying to choose just one gif) Our dear dead wife <3
He LOVES tickles and no one can convice me otherwise, I mean! Look at him! He definitely play that card at any moment he can
Cheering someone up? They say that laughter is the best medicine! Another boring day stuck in a cabin waiting for the snowstorm to go away? Nothing better than a tickle fight to make the time pass! Comforting a sad kid they just saved and are bringing to safety? Add a few wiggling fingers and watch that beautiful smile appear right way! Someone is literally just minding their own business doing nothing at all GET TICKLE ATTACKED!
He is a charming, playful, dramatic bastard and he knows it. He is using every and any opportunity to plentily tease the person, praising their laughter, pointing how lovely is their every reaction, gasping in false offense at any threat of revenge.
He will definitely laugh and snicker together with the person and sometimes let out honest comments that weren't supposed to be teasy but are like 'I didn't expect you to be so ticklish' or 'Wait, it tickles? Right here? That is so cute' and take the matters on his own hands to find at least one (1) new tickle spot when he tickles a friend because their surprised face right before descending in unstoppable giggling is way too priceless
Now, I need you to listen to this very very carefully: he can NOT take what he dishes out. at all.
So much squirming and trashing around. He can't control himself at all and won't even try to hold his laughter back, letting it ring loud and free, dying with any kind (literally, anything will do) of tease and pleading for his life as if he is being killed on the spot.
Somehow is totally blind to tickle traps. Sometimes just to mess with him Heiter would hold his cup up and ask for a toast and when Himmel complied he would latch on his ribs and rip my bro. he's dead on the floor. He never seems it coming even if they already done this a dozen time before.
Always crumbles with the tickles. A squeeze on his side and his legs transform in noodles immediately. That doesn't mean that he is a easy target though, if you decide to tickle him be prepared for some revenge
His main target and partner of tickle fights is Heiter, even though they manage to pull the rest of the party to their shenanigans sometimes too, even getting to listen to listen Eisen low, amused chuckles and Freiren tiny smile.
Talking about that. There is just one very specific occasion all his self preservations, squirms and defense disappear in the same second: when Frieren is involved.
Once, when both Heiter and Einsen decided to gang up on him, she decided to get into the fun with a few pokes and the VERY MOMENT Himmel realized that she was tickling him it was over.
He became a boneless mess of hysterical giggles on the floor not moving a single inch and taking all the tickling with no protests, completely lost in the fact that this was Frieren having fun, being silly and playful with them and his brain shortcurted and suddenly he became 1000000000000 more ticklish instantly.
Excuse me honor he is SMITTEN
If he is tickled for long enough or on a specially ticklish spot he lets out a loud, high pitched crackling that never fail to amuse his friends because he gets extremely red at that and tries to cover his face at any cost.
Besides that, he is not flustered at all about his liking to tickle and be tickled. It's a fun activity, a nice way to bond and it bring happiness to everyone! What is there to be embarrased about it?
Though other teases can destroy him rip
Is extremely and I say extremely gentle and caring when tickling Frieren. Soft scribbles, light scratching and steeping away not before too long has passed. Sometimes get lost in the happiness and joy of the moment but it's quick to come back to reality so that his tickling never lasts too long and he gets smiley about it for the rest of the day.
Gets grumpy about how he never manages to catch Einsen by surprise but immediately loses his pout when the warrior decides that he is not the one who started that war but he is the one who will finish it.
When he takes too long to decide a pose for their statue they start to attack him with plenty of pokes and squeezes until he finally makes up his mind.
Sometimes they just do that while he is posing to mess with him too. Especially because Himmel will try to pretend nothing is happening and attempt to keep his pose on the very beginning until he eventually breaks down in titters and protesting giggles.
It never lasts long. But he keeps trying
Has The Smirk.
Softest and most playful aftercare ever. With plenty of comfort and smiles.
Heiter
Tumblr media
Our flawed priest <3
Do not have The Smirk but he has an entire aura about him that you can't really point what it is but suddenly there's ringing danger bells in your mind and on outside he looks normal, just taking a drink but then you blink and then BOOM he strikes
Can and will destroy someone with tickles with just one (1) hand because his other one is too busy carrying his cup
Gets stupidly silly when tickling someone. He will chuckle together with the person and use the goofiest nicknames, teases, tickle traps and everything else he can think of. It's the whole ordeal, really. He has no shame.
It's quite neutral but leaning to positive when it comes to tickling, but since Himmel is always dragging him into tickle fights he can't help but get a little bit of playful revenge. After a few years he started a couple of them by himself too.
Is horribly skilled with the nimblest and deadliest tickles ever.
Also. Changes from side to side of a tickle fight easy as water and will always help who offers him more drinks. So be careful when siding up with him to not get too close or comfortably into tickling range.
Somehow, incredibly lucky in finding tickle spots, be with random pokes to call the person's attention or some soft scribbling to hear some giggles and smile amused and content at them.
Also adept to cheer up or comforting tickles, creating a lot of fond memories with Fern in the nights she couldn't sleep and they both shared some good tea while watching the sky.
Will try to curl up in a ball when tickled and his only protest is to be careful with his glasses.
Not really very affected by teases. Says a lot of nonsense when is tickled tho
Frieren
Tumblr media
HEEEEERRRRRRRR <3 <3 Our old lady
Has the tiniest, sweetest smile when tickling someone. it's adorable.
Do not engage in tickle fights but it's not against them. Usually would just stay in the background with Einsen while the other two got caught up in their giggly shenaningans
Her biggest moment was when she decided to show everyone this magic spell she learned some decades ago and then suddenly everyone is attacked by a bunch of wiggly, fluffy feathers that followed them no matter how much they squirmed or jumped.
Tickle spell tehee
They never got to know if she did that to mess with them or if she truly just wanted to show the spell.
Is more curious about tickling than anything. Thinks it's a nice way to make her friends laugh, but it's also very neutral about it, won't actively seek revenge or anything.
After years with both Himmel and Heiter, also lightly tickled Fern once or twice for the sake of cheering her up.
Ticklish ears ticklish ears ticklish ears ticklish ears-
The first time Himmel tickled her he immediately fell on the floor ded because it was too much cute.
(The way he looked at her that day is a fond memory for her, she doesn't quite know why, tho.)
Not really a squirmer and her laughter is mostly silence, full of small giggles and one or two hiccups. Like soft tickles the best, since it is not unbearable to feel and actively leaves her w a light, quite content feeling afterwards. She could take a tickle fight, tho.
Fern
Tumblr media
<3 Somehow the most responsible adult in the party <3
Terrifying ler, can and will use your weakness against you.
Just as she does when fighting, thrives when her victim understimate her power and is quick and ruthless to bring them to their destruction.
Will tickle the person usually as a way to get them to do something (probably a chore they forgot) or admit something while having the most unimpressed face ever seen by humankind
She can be both incredibly merciless and very very kind, depends on her mood, the person and the context
Only like being tickled by someone she really trusts and not around another people so no one will her being silly like this.
Get very embarrassed just for thinking how childish tickling is, but treasures the soft moments with har friends and family, just like every other playful, fun, nice memory
When the person (let's be honest here, probably Spark) is too occupied laughing their heart out also let's out the tiniest, softest smile, pretty much like Frieren
Used tickles to cheer up Spark once and promised to do 10 times worse if he even THINKS about mentioning that to anyone
Snorts. SO much of them. If she is laughing they will automatically appear no matter how much she tried to hide them between her hands.
Her shoulders and head shake with giddy energy when is being tickled. It's everything <3
Einsen
Tumblr media
*LOUD INTELLIGIBLE SCREAMING* AAAAAA
As I said on Himmel's part, not really one to start the tickle fight but a quick one to finish it.
Not really very ticklish and not very easy to be caught out of guard so rip his opponents, really
HOWEVER, he has one single incredibly and horribly ticklish spot right under his knee that he immediately DIES when it's tickled and it's an automatic win for the person, so the thing is of every fight is: will them be able to get him there before he gets them? That is the big question
Not really a teaser, prefers to tickle the person in silence while mapping the places that get the biggest reactions so he can focus there.
Could or could not have used this techinique with Spark to 'train his resistence' once (an excuse that his friends were very fond to use with him) but no one will ever know because if you ask him he will just stare at you and let out a single chuckle before going on about his day and Spark will Blush and Die before answering
Made mental bets and always knew the score by heart of Himmel x Heiter fights
Used to think it was a silly and pointless activity. But after their ten year adventure came to treasure and be fond of silly, pointless activities
Loud, booming laughter or no laughing at all. No in between.
Spark
Tumblr media
DA BOI WHO DID NOT DESERVE THAT PAST AND NOW DESERVE ALL THE LAUGHTER EVER
Do not mind tickling at all!
It kind of reminds he of his brother, since when he was a kid he was the biggest tickle monster ever. Not only on those training tips he used to give even while being extremely busy, but he just loved to appear out of nowhere behind him, carry and put him on his shoulder and tickle him while walking back home, pretenidng he was carrying a bag of 'extremely wiggly vegetables!'
He also used pokes and prodding to help him with maintaining his form while wielding a sword. Even if extremely common, Spark still squeaked everytime he poked his armpit to remind him to not his arms so far away from his torso
Still, everytime he is tickled that boi just can't form ANY coherent sentence at all, no matter if he is full on belly laughter with just a few giggles, his mind immediately turn into a mushy mess
Won't go down without a fight. Running away, attacking back, squirming as his life depends on that. Most of the time squirming away from it only to dash in a sudden bolt of energy and then come back in a surprise tickle attack to get revenge.
Tried to get Fern back once for tickling and they ended up actually fighting but some days later she started a tickle fight so he ??? is just very confused??? if she actually hates it???
(But to see her loosing up, giggling, laughing out loud and being so full of playfulness and joy... wow)
He likes to throw a few playful teases here and there when he is tickling his friends, with plenty of snickers of his own and pointing out how ticklish the other person is or about their delight reactions.
!!Tickles games!!!
His entire face gets extremely red when his laughter begins to sound higher or crackly. Can NOT take any tease about that at all.
Sein
Tumblr media
OUR EVEN MORE FLAWED PRIEST <3 <3 <3 Come back pls
THE MOST TICKLISH PERSON EVER
And his best, amazing, ruthless friend Gorilla was more than happy to remind him about it all the time
Until nowadays he can't really see fingers wiggling in his direction without immediately getting a wobbly smile and giggles instinctively creeping up on his throat
His brother also would tickle him when he was a kid and later would gladly snitch all the 'truly good, hidden tickle spots' to his friend much to his dismisse
Will trash, squirm, plea, beg and promise to do anything when tickled. Especially if we'retalking about light, soft tickles. Those make him go absolutely crazy out of his own mind
Even so, he doesn't mind it too much. Still, gets extremely embarrased and complains about how childish it is.
Def made AND lost bets again his friend and got tickled as a "payament". Also I can see them both having competitions to see who takes the longest to laugh, say uncle, keep their arms up and etc :D
Sometimes gives Spark a few tickles just to mess w him and snicker at the jumps he gives.
Spark got revenge so rip.

Sousou no frieren spends quite a bit of time making a point of explaining why frieren's favorite spell is the flower spell and juxtaposing it with serie's contempt for it. It's a very telling moment for each character. Frieren's love of flowers is both simple and complex; she loves them because it makes people feel better.
The flower spell was passed onto Frieren by Flamme the legendary mage, who loved the flowers for their beauty. Out of the countless legendary spells Flamme knew, she loved the seemingly trivial spell to make a field of flowers. Despite her hatred of demons. Despite her life's work being dedicated to war and eradication. The most important spell she passed in wasn't a combat spell, it was flowers. Frieren adopted this spell to honor her memory, and wherever she goes she carries a piece of her old mentor with her, even as Flame fades into myth. It's safe to say Frieren would not have been the same mage without it.
Frieren carried this spell for a thousand years, and used it again when she met Himmel. It was surely a formative experience for him. Here he was, a scared little boy alone in a dark forest meeting a beautiful elven woman, and her highest priority first and foremost was comforting him. Of all the things she could have done, the first is comforting him with a field of flowers. It was clearly an impactful moment for him because he remembered it so vividly years later. One may think that Himmel, whose top priority is always the happiness of the villages he visits, wouldn't have been the same hero without it. Not only that, it was the one reason why he had chosen frieren to join his party.
The flower spell is responsible for half the members of the hero's party, and the hero's party is responsible for killing the demon king, which was surely a fraught, desperate battle. Who knows if any other group was capable of what Himmel and his party achieved, but regardless, it was the flower spell that brought them together. It was the flower spell that made them who they are. The flowers are shown to have real, tangible utility. What does Serie think of all this? The flower spell is useless. It's meaningless. She simply doesn't understand.
Serie is similarly baffled and enraged when Fern, who is very much Frieren's student, asks Serie for a laundry spell of all things. Serie could never understand the utility and comfort of a cleaning spell. But how much of Fern's life has spent on laundry? How time and happiness has Fern gained from learning a laundry spell? How could someone as detached from earthly needs such as Serie understand? It really begs the question of what Serie does consider to be a useful spell. What is her most "useful" spell? It's a not a question the anime answers directly, but I doubt Serie would have batted an eye of Fern asked for a combat spell. The Continental Magic Association, the organization that Serie founded, only allows the deadliest mages in the highest ranks. We've seen how dangerous the first class rank tests were, and we've seen that every first class mage before that point had been a master of killing. Serie's idea of a useful spell is one that can kill. And that is why Frieren and Serie hate each other so much.
Serie is a mage of war, and Frieren is a mage of peace. They could never understand each other. Could Serie have defeated the demon king? Surely. But she wouldn't have stopped to tend to the needs of the people she found along the way; she wouldn't have been Himmel. Every day those people would wear smelly clothes and come home to gardens of mud, and Serie could never understand.

Nina is the reason why i'm so comfortable with the way I look and I don't care about my weight as much as I used to, she was so fierce and the way she's written is so beautiful that it made me fall a bit in love with myself as well! Also bisexual queen!
5. Agnes Montague from TMA
Agnes is one of those characters that doesn't have a lot of info but that's what makes her so good! Also she basically has her destiny settled and she's trying to fight against it which is one of my fav tropes so. even if you've never listened to the magnus archives I think you should search her! 10. Frieren from Sousou no Frieren
Frieren is the new addition to my fave characters, so glad this anime started airing bc it's such a breath of fresh air to the fantasy genre and I adore watching her journey and seeing her in a world that moves without her.

thinking about a sousou no frieren!hitsukarin au, with toushirou as frieren and karin as himmel and feeling ever so melancholic about it.
they saved the world from evil, adventured ten years together, but their lifespans are different and so, after karin dies, toushirou regrets not knowing her better. she was human, he’s an elf. time passes differently for both of them. hers was barely a blip compared to his, and yet. he never thought it used to matter, to waste ten, twenty years, when he has so much more time ahead of him. and suddenly, she’s dead, and the ache is stronger than he could have possibly imagined, the regret more painful than before. humans have come and gone as easily as seasons changing, so why, why does her death carry so much grief this time?
but slowly, toushirou comes to the conclusion that he cared more for karin than he realised, he was too young to process it, let alone register if karin felt the same way, while they travelled together as companions. so he searches his memories, to see if she said anything, if she tried and stopped herself from saying something, longing from afar with a mischievous grin. was he dense or was she good at concealing?
but still, he’s left chasing ghosts, as life goes on, and he goes on. the imprint she left on his heart, and he tries to make connections with those that still remain in the world they helped save together, he can’t help but wish he didn’t take time for granted, because maybe—maybe he could have had more memories with her by his side. her importance on him realized too late, but affects him even now.

with sousou no frieren airing and telling us about stark's backstory (i'm anime only for now, btw, so this will only be about that) and my huge love for one piece, i can't help but just mix the two things together! stark's personality and backstory remind me so so much of a mix between usopp and sanji... as a sanuso shipper it honestly makes me quite insane. because stark grew up in a family of already talented people, where he had to work twice as hard as them and they treated him like the disappointment and weakling of the family tree. however, he has one single brother who helps him escape from that nightmare. that tells him to live. that teaches him that talent is nothing compared to the ambition he has and working his way to being strong. it reminds me so much of sanji and the vinsmokes, with reiju doing quite exactly the same thing for him... and, okay, his backstory is sanji's. just a bit lighter, i guess, but still heartbreaking. then the years pass by and... he's literally usopp. he's scared of dying and big big enemies even if he could win a battle against them any day. because he's strong but he doesn't realize. his self-esteem is so low he can't even acknowledge the strength that takes to kill a whole fucking dragon all by himself. i love how he's written because his fear isn't seen as something he needs to get over with. the narrative doesn't tell him "that'll pass. you'll be brave someday. you just need to become stronger". the story literally tells him: "even the strongest warriors are scared of death. being scared is normal. it means you are alive and it means you're working hard to get here. fear is what brought you here. being scared is only natural." and even if he is still insecure about himself, he's learning to take that fear and make it his.
and i wrote all of this to say that stark from frieren is exactly how i imagine sanuso's lovechild would be like because damn if he literally doesn't have usopp's personality traits and sanji's core fears of not being good enough. also, he's fucking stupid in the calmest of ways sometimes and i think it's a beautiful mix between them.

to assist any fellow dumb people who were PRETTY SURE that the phrase "Sousou no Frieren" was a pun or wordplay or something but you weren't really sure
(arguable spoilers for up to about episode 9 or so)
When the demon guy called her "Frieren the Slayer" and the cool title card dropped that said "FRIEREN THE SLAYER", you probably caught on to the fact that he literally calls her "Sousou no Frieren" (which is what the title card says in Japanese, which is way cooler bc it's a hokey title card drop like 2+ hours into the series and that's hilarious). I read the manga before I started watching the show, so I didn't get the audio cue the first time around.
The official translation of the title is "Beyond Journey's End" which is perfectly fine. This isn't a discussion about "how to translate something and retain all the original meaning" because that's obviously impossible. You probably also have seen that lots of places call it "Frieren at the Funeral" which is probably more literal to the most common usage of "Sousou" (a two kanji word with the respective meanings of "interment" and "to escort/send), which is (more or less) used to mean "see someone off" in a sad funerary sense. It doesn't mean "funeral" literally, since it usually implies the literal act of attendence, it's kind of like the word "exequial" in English in that sense -- it doesn't mean "funeral", it just kind of... implies "funeral" and all of its (usually) sad connotations.
So, we have a few different translations from "Sousou no Frieren", depending on context : "Frieren the Slayer", "Frieren at the Funeral", and I guess if you wanted to really try to wrap those up into one you could say something pretentious like "The Exequial Frieren". There's a cool parallel here with English, where we have two really goofy devices that would very literally fit here -- "funeral-bringer" and "funeral-goer" -- which Japanese has very neatly mashed into one very cool "Sousou".
So yeah. She "sees off" her old adventuring companions at the end of their life, and she also "sees off" the demons that she kills. Frieren the Slayer and Frieren the Funeral Goer as literally "Frieren: the one who sees us off at the end of our lives". Neat!
(source: like 3 Reddit threads and 4 or 5 japanese to English dictionaries. I don't speak a word of this stuff. I just got to that title drop where the guy says "Frieren the Slayer", turned swiftly to my wife and went "wait is that a fucking pun" and wanted to save others from the humiliation of having to go on reddit to figure it out)

Some more random translation from Japanese thoughts:
Read a few volumes of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, or in Japanese, Sousou no Frieren. I love looking up the meanings of words in other languages, seeing how they cut up the world in different ways than English. Japanese is especially interesting because it feels like all the kanji lead to a lot of words that are so specific they feel like jargon. "no Frieren" unambiguously glosses as "Frieren's"; but 葬送? "Attending a funeral procession; seeing off the deceased; burial of someone's remains; observing a burial."
Even if we had a word that meant close to the same thing, not sure a translator would've used it. Really upfronts the bittesweet and gloomy aspects of the series, compared to the title in English, huh?
A friend's playing the latest remaster of Final Fantasy VI, and we were talking about the differences between the Woolsey (SNES) and Slattery (GBA, Pixel) translations. While Woolsey made some great choices (especially in Chrono Trigger), he apparently also made quite a number of unambiguous errors, and Slattery kept most of Woolsey's more famous fun lines.
Here's Mato (professional Japanese localizer, been a fan of his blog for forever) on the differences: Legends of Localization.
But we talked about one change he thought was definitely worse:
Tumblr media
Slattery has Kefta spamming every arbitrary negative word in English he can think of, but in the original text, Kefka is saying "Chikushou" over and over until he can only say "chiku" repeatedly; it's clear that he's having a meltdown. Not a time for verbosity.
Chikushou is one of the first ten Japanese curse words I learned, but the explanation of what it meant was so unclear I barely recalled it. "Damn it" is JDIC's first choice gloss, and it's probably a good one because it turns out the etymology is religious (ish: Buddhist), and just like how people say "damn" without actually intending to invoke the righteous wrath of God, a Japanese person just says it because they are annoyed. But it was originally an insult towards a person, saying they have been or deserve to be reborn into the Animal Domain, that is, they are lower than a real human, that they are brutish and ruled only by their desires. (This is right after you smack Kefka one, so you can see why he goes there.)
I ended up thinking about the choice of "esper" for the summoned creatures in VI. It's a great word, and I always thought it was very evocative of some kind of magical creature. Maybe just because I played Final Fantasy VI III at a formative age, or maybe because it sounds like vesper or whisper. It's actually from Extra Sensory Perception. Japanese loves its acronyms so "ESP-er" becomes "esper" becomes anybody with psychic powers. But despite that being common lingo, the magic creatures in FFVI were called 幻獣 ("genju", 'phantom beasts'), as they are in every iteration of the series (except VIII which uses GF).
While I was looking around on the final fantasy wiki, I noticed that the word translated as "magitek" is actually not that at all. It was actually "魔導", "mado". I've been chuuni, so I recognized "魔" ("ma", 'magic') off the bat, though not "導", It was interesting that it looks and sounds so similar to "道"; "do" is path or way, it's the kanji they use for the tao, and you might recognize it from "judo" and "kendo". 導 basically means conduct or guidance.
魔 on its own actually means something more like "evil spirit" than "magic", you add 法 (principles/law/system) to get "mahou", which is a very good match for "witchcraft". And 魔道 is in fact "the path of evil". The main reason I mention it is because like chikushou, it has a connection to Japanese Buddhism, which uses "mado" to refer to a netherworld where evil spirits dwell. 魔導 then is something like "leading (evil) spirits", which is a good fit for what magitek does in the game; though it's also generally used for sorcery and black magic.

Random update
Some things from the past 2 weeks while I was gone.
Tumblr media
I have no tickle fics in progress at this very moment, but I'm considering a multi-chapter Sousou no Frieren fic, and a fluffy Suzume no Tojimari fic, both are not very popular fandoms in the community so I'd probably please no one but myself with it.
The guy next to me on the plane was watching anime so I couldn't help but side eye all the time and I thought it looked fun but I didn't know which it was. So when I got home I googled the keywords: anime, grandpa, guy black hair, magic - based on the things I saw on his phone lol, and google didn't disappoint: the anime is called Mashle: Magic and Muscles and I will add it to my list to watch.
Luigi is adorable, that's a thought Ive been having multiple times. He makes a cute lee too. I didn't write enough fics with him....
My boyfriend tickled me a lot, yay.
I rewatched the movie Sing 1 on the plane (a bit reluctantly since I really was in the mood for Sing 2 but they didn't have it), and I would like to announce that Johnny is a cutie, and a lee and I just LOVE his performance scene so muuuch:
youtube
Thanks to motivation by @lovelynim I finally started catching up with Honkai Star Rail story (will take a while), but I'll say the thirst for gallagher is real and I didn't even meet him in the story yet.
Still addicted to Fortnite, it was the first thing I did when I had time to myself at home again.
Haven't touched Genshin in a long time but download the monster update yesterday. Sure took a while.
I bought a new Chikorita plush. Very soft, very cute.
Today I worked over 10 hours at the office, only downside about vacations is the pre-vacation and post-vacation stress at work lmao.
I still have a couple of asks left in my inbox and will answer them soon, but I really wanted to post this first, and play more Fortnite now.

Frieren: Beyond Journey's End Episode 8 Review - Sousou No Frieren
Hey, there’s a title drop! The Japanese name for this show is called Sousou no Frieren (Frieren of the Funeral). While the translation calls the episode title “Frieren the Slayer”, I think the title just alludes to death, so there is no right or wrong answer. Anyways, this episode was great as always. It’s mainly a buildup episode to Frieren vs Aura the Guillotine, but it’s done in a good way that it establishes Frieren, Fern and Stark as characters.
Tumblr media
Frieren loathes demons so much that she fought Draht unarmed. She legit shows off she can use magic even without her staff in hand. Thats how powerful and relentless she is as a mage and as an opponent. Draht fucked up big time. The whole scene with him was very brutal like she was some feral creature out for blood and she was. She’s also very intelligent. She never fought back against the guards because she knew it’s a huge crime to do so. So, when she saw a decapitated guard in front of the dungeon, she goes into hiding, but it’s actually an excuse to leave the city and fight Aura. I think that her having huge trust in Fern and Stark is a positive thing for her. Frieren was apathetic in the past, so for her to trust the youngsters in their ability to defeat Lugner and Linie shows how much she has changed. I also like how contradictory she is. She says she’s going out to avoid getting caught, but she’s going out because she senses Aura and seems to revel in delight at the thought of killing her. That smirk she made was pretty chilling. I do hope that Frieren’s hatred for demons will be explored in the future.
Fern is very capable as a mage. Being Frieren’s apprentice means she knows how to use magic cleverly. She can walk on water and fly when necessary. She can also hide her mana to her presence. I love that she’s mainly composed compared to the more sensitive Stark and that’s a good thing. She and Stark actually work well as a team. Stark is strong, so he’s durable enough to withstand attacks that gives Fern an opening to cast spells. I do like how she’s warming up to him slowly; they progressed by being able to eat a meal together.
Usually, coward characters can be kind of annoying, but Stark is actually written very well. He’s not over the top cowardly, but is someone that will step up when necessary. He trembles and he’s not afraid of showing it; in fact, people always compliment him for being able to show fear even in dire situations. I find him a very endearing character. He gets scared and trembles a lot, but it shows off how human he is. He may underestimate himself a lot, but he knows how to survive. Like in this episode, his main goal was to save Granat, so he used himself as a diversion. Instead of engaging in a longer battle, he retreats with Fern and the graf. I do like how these characters are a lot more intelligently written compared to other shounen stories where everyone just fights everyone and everything nonstop.
The demons have interesting abilities. Draht fights with magical wires. Lugner manipulates his own blood. Linie uses some sort of fireballs? They all have unique abilities, which make them very interesting opponents. I think Lugner’s ability is the scariest by far since blood is formless, so it can change into anything the owner wants it to be. I loved how it was animated, especially when Lugner was fighting against Granat. The demons also reveal that they know how to use magic and they spend most of their lives trying to perfect it. This makes perfect sense with the way those three demons have unique abilities and with how Qual had Zoltraak as his own signature ability at first. The only downside to this is that they can be countered at any time, like with how Frieren and humans researched ways to counteract Zoltraak by making it a spell that kills demons instead of humans.
I can’t wait for next week when Frieren vs Aura begins. I know for a fact that Frieren will not be holding back against such an opponent. I can’t wait to see Stark and Fern’s official fight against Lugner and Linie too. This is getting so exciting. What are your thoughts on this episode?
