It’s the first bean harvest of the season! Through a tornado, a bombing, and two years of pandemic life spent gardening on the tiniest of city balconies, we dreamed of such a day when we would be in a place with a yard big enough to grow an heirloom garden of size and consequence for all our Vintage Kitchen cooking posts. In 1967, a research team at Washington State University, led by Dr. C. D. Schwartze, developed a strawberry that produced not one, not two, but three yields of fruit over the course of spring and summer. It took C.D. twenty-five years of research to perfect these prolific little champions, but once established they quickly became favorites of home cooks and honeybees across the country. 🍓 Meet the Quinaults - named after a Pacific Northwest indigenous tribe, this variety is known for their extra sweetness, soft texture and homegrown goodness. 🌱 Right now, they are the one and only occupants in our edible heirloom garden so far but they are already producing flowers and fruit and attracting the bees 🐝. Upon their midcentury debut, I love that C. D. referred to these new plants as his “berry babies” and talked most not about the two decades of time, research, and effort it took to successfully grow them, but about what foods they would pair best with. “They are excellent served atop shortcake or ice cream,” he enthusiastically recommended.🍓 Cheers to the lovable farmer foodie scientist C.
