February 2024
Another dreich evening of weather resulted in a poor attendance at the February meeting of the local Accordion and Fiddle Club when Calum MacAskill (accordion) and Charlie Oag (drums) got the evening off to a flying start with a great set of marches – 'Major Norman Orr Ewing', 'The Headlands' and 'Dovecote Park' . They followed this by slowing the tempo to play a fine set of waltzes.
The sound of the bagpipes then followed as Fox Brendon played some slow airs and marches before being followed on to the stage by his young son, Kiro, who gave a nice rendition of 'Cailinn Mo Run Sa' on his fiddle after which he produced his whistle and played the 'Fairy Lullaby' followed by 'Happy Birthday' especially for his Dad celebrating his birthday the following day. Big sister Leela then took over on the fiddle playing 'Margaret's Waltz' followed by 'Willafjord'. The Club is delighted to have the support of the Brendon family who travel in from Uig every month to boost our local players.
Club Chair and MC Julia Rudram then played a selection on her fiddle – 'The Bonnie Lass o' Fyvie', 'Leaving Glenurquhart' and 'Pibroch of Donald Dubh' which brought us up to guest artist time.
It was a warm welcome back to the Andrew MacDonald Trio who last appeared at the Club in 2017. Andrew, who is now based near Oban, played piano accordion and was accompanied on fiddle by Sarah Jane Shanklin from Acharacle and Glenelg's own Iain Cameron on drums. A rousing set of jigs got the session off to a great start followed by lively sets of marches and reels including a beautiful slow air and the waltzes - 'Farquhar and Hettie's Waltz' composed by Farquhar Macrae and 'Margaret's Waltz' by Pat Shaw. The first half ended as it began in great style with a set of jigs.
After the customary break for tea and sandwiches Calum and Charlie got the second half under way with a set of 2/4 marches followed by some 6/8 marches – 'Sweet Maid of Mull' and the 'Bearsden Fiddlers'. It was Julia's duty again to take to the stage and she played Phil Cunningham's composition 'The Pearl' followed by 'The Massacre of Glencoe'.
The Andrew MacDonal Trio returned to the stage and entertained the audience with a great selection of tunes once again. Included in a total of 13 sets in this section were reels, marches, jigs, and waltzes with one of the highlights being a solo from Sarah Jane on the fiddle – 'Colonel MacLean of Ardgour', 'Munlochy Bridge' and 'Barney's Balmoral'. A popular sing-a-long set followed – 'The Kishorn Commandoes' and 'Loch Maree Islands' – before the band rounded off a great evening of music with a fantastic set of jigs.
The turnout at recent months in the club has been rather disappointing and it is hoped that numbers attending will increase in the coming weeks to appreciate the high standard of music being provided by our local musicians and the visiting bands who travel long distances to entertain our audiences. The March club night will feature the Matthew MacLennan Trio from Edinburgh and will be held in the Royal Hotel, Portree, on Thursday, 7th March 2024.

I'm dying for more Diego and to finally have proper Cameron. Diego won me over on that snippet where he thinks about his grandfather, and I'm so cuirous about what part Cameron played on the first two books that is gonna be revealed. Do you have any theories for that?
listen diego had me hooked from the first snippet he appeared in I truly stan one mostly self aware king
Cameron is a wild card and I have no idea whether he’ll be on the cohorts side or Emma’s, but I think he’ll definitely create drama cause there’s no way he can know about Julian and Emma and to all his knowledge Emma is still single? I hope he’s there for another reason besides jemma relationship angst though, because he could definitely be someone who spies on the cohort for them? maybe?

there are very few wlw book rec lists on this site so i’m making one myself goddammit
anyway here are some wlw books i enjoy that you should read bc i’m wlw and i told you to. i tried to make it as concise as possible. each title has a link that leads to a site where you can buy the book online + look at the cover.
we are okay by nina lacour genre: realistic fiction, coming of age summary: marin's the only one left on her college campus during winter break, because marin's the only one who feels she has no home to go back to. between whatever happened with her grandfather and whatever happened between her and her... friend (is that what hannah is to her, anymore?) she'd rather just wait out the snowstorms on her own. but then hannah comes to visit her, and she's forced to figure things out for herself. why you should read it: wlw character whose story arc doesn’t revolve around being wlw but rather growing up and dealing with the death of a family member which is honestly really refreshing, some nice early college vibes i really like, generally just a nice fresh story. writing style is *chef’s kiss* content warnings: none.
the miseducation of cameron post by emily m. danforth genre: realistic fiction, coming of age summary: a book about the life of cameron post, starting with the first time she kisses a girl and following her through the premature death of her parents, summer swim meets, learning about what it means to be lesbian, getting outed and shipped off to conversion camp, and eventually straight up running away. why you should read it: written in a way that makes it easy to read, character voice is clear and fun, cameron is just incredibly relatable and i love her so much oh my god. the ending is so good its all so good i am literally begging you to read this book. content warnings: homophobia, internalized homophobia, parents who aren’t accepting, somewhat in-depth descriptions of conversion camp and mild conversion therapy, referenced recreational drug use, self harm and suicide of minor minor character but still potentially triggering.
the pros of cons by alison cherry, lindsay ribar, and michelle schusterman genre: realistic fiction, humor summary: three girls enter three conventions going on in the same convention center; vanessa's there for the fandom con. pheobe's a percussionist on a school field trip to a band competition. callie's tagging along to her dad's taxedermy convention. naturally, the three meet, and shenanigans ensue. why you should read it: teenage lesbian character who is openly and comfortably lesbian and its a part of her identity and she’s chill with it?? yes!!! she has a crush on a nonbinary character??? double yes!!!! also generally a very funny book, and all the protagonists are wonderful. warnings: none.
laura dean keeps breaking up with me by mariko tamaki genre: realistic fiction summary: freddy can't figure out what's up with her... friend? girlfriend? laura dean. too focused on her own problems, she starts to distance herself from her friends and more important parts of her life. a beautifully drawn (this one's a graphic novel!) coming of age story. why you should read it: graphic novel so its a quick read, the art is stunning, the secondary characters are complex and have their own arcs and are a wonderful supporting cast, also we have yet another teen lesbian character who is comfortable with her identity and i love to see it. warnings: teen pregnancy mention and underage sex mention (between an adult and an older teenager)
wilder girls by rory power genre: horror summary: when the horrible virus called the tox first started infecting the girls at raxter boarding school, the government swore to help them. it’s been over a year now, and no cure has arrived. as more and more girls pass away with each passing day, hetty and her friends, reese and byatt, are determined to make it out alive. why you should read it: holy shit okay in general this is just so well written and compelling and the characters are strong and we got casually queer characters and yeah it’s great. don’t read if you want a happy ending, though. warnings: mild body horror and mild gore
keeping you a secret by julie anne peters genre: realistic fiction, romance summary: early 2000s lesbians baby!!! plus annoying stepsiblings who actually end up being pretty cool, dumping your douchebag boyfriend, and that spicy side dish of questioning your sexuality because the new girl at school? hot as fuck. why you should read it: if you want to read abt a protagonist having Feelings abt a girl for the first time and combating internalized homophobia, this is your book. if you don’t want bittersweet endings that aren’t exactly what you’d call ‘feel good’ i’d recommend you move on. an easy read (i tore through it in a day). warnings: homophobia, internalized homophobia, parents who aren’t accepting.
on a sunbeam by tillie walden genre: science fiction, adventure, romance summary: a ship floating through space, its crew’s job to restore old buildings among the stars. two girls at a boarding school, falling in love amidst the trials of academic life. slowly the two plotlines intertwine, intersect, become one. why you should read it: graphic novel and the art is so fucking stunning i can stare at it for hours, there are literally no men in the whole book just women and nonbinary characters and its never explained they just don’t exist in this world, science fiction but its written like fantasy, this whole book is just so fucking cool oh my god, also its free online bc it was originally a webcomic so uh you can read it here if you’re broke like me. warnings: none.
the difference between you and me by madeleine george genre: romance, realistic fiction summary: jesse is the founding (and only) member of the national organization to liberate all weirdos. emily’s the vice president of the student council... and she has a boyfriend. what happens as the two accidentally fall into an affair? why you should read it: it’s a quick read that keeps you on the edge of your seat a surprising amount for a realistic fiction teen romance type book, there is pining and it’s great, in general fun if you like the whole star crossed lovers type thing. plus we got some wlw’s being friends with each other which is refreshing! no forced romance between wlw characters. warnings: internalized homophobia star-crossed by barbara dee genre: realistic fiction summary: when twelve-year-old mattie signs up for the school production of romeo and juliet, she expects to have some fun with her friends and learn a bit about acting. what she doesn’t prepare for is falling for gemma, the funny, smart, and beautiful girl the director’s cast as juliet. mattie’s never had feelings for a girl before; between balancing her theatre and her new crush, she’s in for quite the school year. why you should read it: written at the middle grade reading level so it’s easy to get through. also no internalized homophobia from wlw protagonist which is wonderful! there tends to be a lot of that in these types of books but in this one it’s more of a quick thought of “huh i’ve never had a crush on a girl before” and then “is this normal?” and then “bah i don’t care she’s fucking pretty” and honestly? same.  warnings: none. princess princess ever after by katie o’neill genre: fantasy summary: they’re two princesses and they’re in love and it’s a short graphic novel what more do you need.  why you should read it: they’re two princesses and they’re in love and it’s a short graphic novel what more do you need. warnings: none.
disclaimer: this list is obviously limited as it is contained to only books that i’ve read and that i was thinking abt at the time i made this post. fellow wlw’s please feel free to add on, but if you do i’d love it if you could add a short summary and any content warnings that might apply (as opposed to just saying a title and the rep in it).

It's funny how you're big switwyn fan but your blog actually helped me to see gaylorism in a nuanced way.
I'm still not a gaylor and I think taylor's sexuality is none of our business but I'm not hetlor truthering anymore lol
you wont see me going on about how taylor said that she's straight!1!1!1 and it's wrong to even THINK about any other option
Awww we love to see the growth.
Tbf I think it’s because I’m such a huge Swiftwyn and a fan of some of the dead ships (GYLLENSWIFT WAS RED 😭) and chaos era Tay that people come round more to chatting about it in a calm way because you can’t yell about how I hate her personal life and want her to be a lesbian when it’s very obvious that I do not, in fact, “want” that. Like to me it makes not a lick of difference if she’s queer or not but based on stuff she put down on main it seems likely that she’s some kind of fluid.
I read a cool interview with Dove Cameron the other day where she says “I’ve hinted about my sexuality for years while being afraid to spell it out for everybody.” And I want the hetty truthers to read that and internalize it. People can signal and hint without necessarily coming out in a written statement or in an interview and that… doesn’t make them straight. You also don’t need to signal or hint either, if you’re queer you’re queer and that’s it, closeted or hinting or very out, you’re still just queer but if you put a bi flag on your head and say “gay pride makes me me” it seems like you’re hinting that you’re not, in fact, straight.

REVIEW
Best Laid Plans by Roan Parrish
Garnet Run #2
What fun this charming story was! Two men so very different and yet seemingly puzzle pieces that fit together in perfectly meet in Wyoming and eventually end up with their very own happily ever after.
What I liked:
* Rye: independent, jobless, kind, forthright, feline lover, inherited house from unknown relative, difficult past, generous, kind, prickly but wonderful – I liked him a lot.
* Charlie: honorable, giving, kind, family oriented, generous, business owner, creative, woodworker, sometimes clueless, lost years of his life caring for his brother – I liked him.
* The interactions between Rye and Charlie. They made me smile, warmed my heart, made me happy, grew in maturity over time, clear communication, openness, caring, tenderness…all that should be in a good relationship.
* Marmot, Jane and Redrum: felines, characters, great support for their humans, and good with one another.
* Clive and his insight into Rye’s grandfather.
* Meeting Charlie’s brother and his significant other (missed their book)
* The small-town location and community support.
* Marie and her expressive eyebrows
* The compassion and understanding that rye had for the four youth he met.
* That Rye and Charlie were not cookie-cutter-characters.
* That both Rye and Charlie overcame difficult circumstances.
* All of it really except…
What I didn’t like:
* Rye’s parents
* The loss Charlie suffered in his senior year of high school.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more by this author? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Harlequin – Carina Press for the ARC – This is my honest review.

Book Description:
A man who’s been moving his whole life finally finds a reason to stay put.
Charlie Matheson has spent his life taking care of things. When his parents died two days before his eighteenth birthday, he took care of his younger brother, even though that meant putting his own dreams on hold. He took care of his father’s hardware store, building it into something known several towns over. He took care of the cat he found in the woods…so now he has a cat.
When a stranger with epic tattoos and a glare to match starts coming into Matheson’s Hardware, buying things seemingly at random and lugging them off in a car so beat-up Charlie feels bad for it, his instinct is to help. When the man comes in for the fifth time in a week, Charlie can’t resist intervening.
Rye Janssen has spent his life breaking things. Promises. His parents’ hearts. Leases. He isn’t used to people wanting to put things back together—not the crumbling house he just inherited, not his future and certainly not him. But the longer he stays in Garnet Run, the more he can see himself belonging there. And the more time he spends with Charlie, the more he can see himself falling asleep in Charlie’s arms…and waking up in them.
Is this what it feels like to have a home—and someone to share it with?

EXCERPT
Through the glass front door, Charlie saw an ominously smoking car grind to a halt in the parking lot. It looked like it had originally been a late-eighties two-door Chevy Beretta but had since been Frankensteined of multiple ve¬hicles’ pieces, many of them different colors and some of them clinging desperately together, helped only by electri¬cal tape and grime.
Charlie winced, fingers itching to put the car together properly—or, perhaps more practically, drive it to the junk¬yard and put it out of its misery.
Marie was bagging Bill Duff’s purchases when the door burst open. In stepped a man Charlie’d never seen before.
He certainly would have remembered.
Long, dark hair fell messily over his shoulders. He was slim and angular, with a slinky walk that made him look like he was made of hips and shoulders. The cuffs and collar of his long-sleeved T-shirt were worn rough and the knees of his jeans blown out. He looked like ten miles of dirt road.
Charlie raised a hand at the newcomer.
“Welcome to Matheson’s. I’m Charlie. Can I help you find anything?”
The man’s light, kohl-lined eyes darted around, as if Charlie might be talking to someone else, then, looking confused, said, “Uh. No.”
He hurried off down aisle one and Charlie let him alone. Some people didn’t want help or attention while they shopped, and Charlie was just glad of a new customer—and a young one at that. Business was okay, but with each passing year overnight shipping and Amazon ate further into his profit margin, particularly with customers under forty.
The stranger walked up and down the aisles, muttering inaudibly, swearing audibly, and consulting his phone every minute or so, as if the answers he wouldn’t accept from Charlie lay there.
After the better part of half an hour, he approached the register, arms full, though there were baskets and small carts available.
“Find everything okay?” Charlie asked as the man dumped his purchases on the counter.
“Uh, sure.”
He sounded distracted and was glaring at the items he’d chosen.
“You need any help with…” Charlie gestured at the hard¬ware equivalent to marshmallows, cheese, and spaghetti be¬fore him.
The man raised a dramatic dark eyebrow but didn’t say anything. His eyes, Charlie could see now, were gray, and his skin was pale, as if he were a black-and-white image in a color world.
That pale glare lanced him, and he looked away, ringing and bagging things up.
The man swiped his credit card like he was ripping some¬thing in half and had to do it again when the machine didn’t get a read. He glared at it.
When Charlie handed him his bags he couldn’t help needling the man a little.
“Need any help getting things out to your car?” he asked, as he’d ask anyone.
The man glared down

About Roan Parrish
Roan Parrish lives in Philadelphia, where she is gradually attempting to write love stories in every genre.
When not writing, she can usually be found cutting her friends’ hair, meandering through whatever city she’s in while listening to torch songs and melodic death metal, or cooking overly elaborate meals. She loves bonfires, winter beaches, minor chord harmonies, and self-tattooing. One time she may or may not have baked a six-layer chocolate cake and then thrown it out the window in a fit of pique.

I really wonder how Cameron is going to make an appearance in qoaad? He seems like a really nice guy compared to the rest of his family.
I know! I’m so excited and I was wondering about him maybe being somehow involved with the scholomance while Kieran is there? I really hope he’s not just in the book to create drama™ with jemma because I feel he has a lot to offer plot wise? I’m excited
