kora if u feel comfortable could u talk about ur gender journey and relationship w lesbianism bc sometimes im like that tweet that's like. im probably trans but i have a job so idrc about that but. ough it's scary and confusing. what if im just butch.

oh wow! well let me think. going to put this under a cut because its longish

it was a much harder path for me to get to lesbianism than to get to Gender. i had a really hard time accepting that for some reason, it took a lot of agonizing, a lot of intentional repression, a lot of misery and wallowing around words and labels and avoidance and definitions. so by the time i got through that it then opened up some gender doors for me because lesbianism is inherently disruptive of the cisheterosexual matrix, but i really, really didnt want to go through that misery again, so i just decided it didnt matter what i was as far as gender and what mattered was how i felt and what made me happy. i only became confident in calling myself trans in the last ohh i dont know, 6 months? and yet ive been on T for a year! for me the actions came easier than the wording. i tried not to stress about what i was doing and whether it was or wasnt aligned with lesbianism. i trusted in our history of transness and masculinity and found a lot of comfort in talking to other butch and transmasc lesbians about their experiences and feelings, and found such a range of experiences that felt very relevant to me

ultimately, i feel like a lesbian. i knew that and i continue to know that. the way that i feel about the people im attracted to and the kinds of relationships i want to have is what connects me to lesbianism. i dont feel like lesbianism is my last thread to womanhood. it isnt a thread to that at all. theres too rich a history of gender defiance and creation to simplify it like that, so i dont let it be that for me. i dont feel dysphoric about being a lesbian even if cis(het) people might not understand me as being transmasc as well. + butch and transmasc arent exclusive and are often beautiful beautiful copilots in dykery !

i also find pursuing what makes me feel good matters a lot more than finding exact words for it. im not really sure what my gender is honestly? it took me a long time to get comfortable/feel like i was allowed to call myself lesbian, trans, and butch too honestly. but i went through a lot less misery when i took actions First to figure out what felt right and then accepted the words that naturally followed After. am i trans or am i not trans stressed me out much more than do i want to bind or not? do i want my voice to be lower or not? do i want to try a different name and pronouns or not? and then my answers to these led me to actions and opportunities that got me to feeling comfortably trans, without putting so much questioning strain on the lesbianism i felt at my core.

+ the opposite is helpful. crossing off what am i Not and what i dont want can be a lot easier than what Am i. woman has always been absolutely not right. trans took longer to feel right which is silly versus logically if i wasnt cis, i was trans, but i had to go in steos

i guess just remember that theres not a really hard line between butchness and the transmasc umbrella (other than personal definition obviously) and you can be one or both or one now and then later realize the other feels better. try to read about butches and he/him lesbians and transmasc dykes and talk to them where you can and enjoy the range of answers and identities and give yourself grace to explore that without so much pressure on whether its one or the other. youre still you regardless of what words to use to describe it so take your time figuring out what you want before you worry too much about what that means you “are”

ALSO you dont have to be butch to be trans and still a lesbian or vice versa you can be nonbinary or genderqueer or agender or genderfluid or etc etc etc and consider those under the label Trans and also be butch! or you can be those things but Not butch and still a lesbian! you can do whatever forever!

Hiii not to be insanely annoying but how did you 'format' your bio, so that you can have multiple lines and not just one block of text?

hello anon!

in getting this ask TIL apparently if you update your bio from the normal edit appearance screen on the desktop version, it deletes out all your paragraph breaks. we love a hellsite

anyways! to answer your question, i've been on this site for over 10 years now, and, at least at one point, updating my description anywhere but within my desktop custom theme settings would break all my hyperlinks, so i always update my description within my actual custom desktop theme. i have no idea if it still does this but i'm set in my ways now lmao

to get there, i go to bisamwilson.tumblr.com/archive to get to my archive (should work with any blog name), and then, since i'm signed in on my laptop to this blog, it lets me hit this little art palette button to get to my blog's desktop theme. my theme actually has a button on my regular blog page to get here as well, but idk if all themes do so i'm explaining the long way around

this takes me into my theme with a little sidebar for customization, and i can type out my description in html from there (which is how i get both my paragraph breaks and my hyperlinks!) this particular theme actually has different settings for my desktop blog description and my normal tumblr blog page description, which is why "in my anakin skywalker era." isn't on a separate line in this screenshot even tho it is if you saw my blog in the lil auto tumblr blog preview

however, if you don't have a custom theme and don't plan to get one, i played around a bit with a blank side blog that i just keep to redirect an old url to this url, and found that while the paragraph breaks just go away when using them in a blog description on the desktop version of tumblr's appearance editor, they don't if you're editing your description in the tumblr mobile app (at least on iphone). i did, however, find a glitch where after i saved the new description, when i went to edit it again, it would no longer let me hit the return key unless i'd already written something new after where i wanted the line break. e.g, if i wanted "one" on the first line and "two" on the second, i'd have to write "one two" on the same line, move my cursor to before "two" and THEN hit return. but this was only after i saved the blog description once already.

ho ho ho, classic rock fans! Christmas is coming and so is The Secret Rocker Santa project! if you are looking for an opportunity to make new friends who love classic rock, or just want to make someone happy, this is your chance!

What is Secret Rocker Santa?

Secret Rocker Santa is a tumblr-wide “match-maker” in which you will anonymously send asks to (and hopefully befriend!) a tumblr user who is assigned to you. you will also be assigned to someone else, who will send anonymous asks to you. the event will run from december 1st through december 25th. while this might seem complicated, it’s actually quite simple, and you will only need to answer a minimum of two questions to sign up.

How it works:

you must read these instructions!

the deadline to sign up is november 28th. there are two ways that you can sign up: the first option is to sign up via google forms. the second option is to send me a submission (or an ask) with your completed questionnaire (found here). while the first two questions are required, you can otherwise provide as much or as little information as you want.

please reblog this post! (this isn’t a strict requirement, but it would be greatly appreciated and helps to ensure that enough people will participate!)

your ask box must be open to anyone! this means that anon asks will have to be enabled. if you want, you can wait until the first day of the project (december 1st) to change this setting, but please make sure you remember!

your blog doesn’t have to be classic rock-related, you just need to be a fan. (we will also be using a very broad definition of “classic rock,” so nearly any music from 1950s-1990s counts.)

(those are the main things you need to know, but more details + some helpful tips are below the cut!!)

shortly after signing up you will be assigned a number — you probably won't need it for anything, but it's a backup way for me to keep track of who is who in case we run into any problems :)

during the last days of november, i will be assigning people to their Secret Rocker Santas. you will receive a message from me telling you who you have been assigned to, either in the form of an ask or direct message.

you will start messaging the person assigned to you ANONYMOUSLY on the 1st of december and continue until Christmas (december 25th), which is when you will reveal your identity and (hopefully) have made a new friend!

you can send your partner whatever you want (as long as you do not reveal your identity). your job is to make your partner feel happier! (some ideas: send lyrics, pictures, or facts; play games, chat, and of course do things that are not only associated with classic rock).

be careful - make sure you are messaging your assigned partner anonymously.

please tag messages that you receive from your secret santa and any other related posts as #SRS23, so your santa will be able to find your answers more easily.

EXTRA REMINDERS:

some people might get more than one santa or will be assigned to more than one person, depending on how many people participate and how many suitable matches i have for certain people. if you are certain you will not be able to be a secret santa for two people, please mention this when you submit your form (you can also let me know if you would prefer to be a santa for two or more people! anyone who volunteers for this will get first pick if the need arises)

if you’re not committed to sending asks to your partner and/or responding to your santa at least a few (2-3) times a week, please do not sign up.

while the primary focus of this project is classic rock, any additional interests you list may be used as a secondary way of helping to find a good match for you. with that in mind, don’t hesitate to list any interests and hobbies you might have, whether they relate to classic rock or not! this will especially come in handy if there are many applicants who like a particular band, or if i am having trouble finding a match for you based on your favorite bands.

if your santa has not contacted you in over a week, message me and i will gently remind them or find you another one.

as a general rule, be nice! anyone who is rude to the another participant will be removed from the project.

make sure to answer all of your santa’s messages! you don’t have to answer right away, but don’t ignore them.

please let me know if you experience any problems at all (for example, if i have made a mistake, or you are having problems with either your own santa or the person you are assigned to)

if you are not already following your partner’s blog, you probably shouldn’t do it right away, because they might guess that you are their santa.

it’s useful to have an easy-to-find “about me” page or pinned post so that your santa will have a better chance of finding something to talk to you about!

please try to keep a note of who you’ve been assigned to, as well as your assigned number!

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR URL AT ANY TIME DURING THE PROJECT PLEASE LET ME KNOW. if you don’t let me know about your new URL (or otherwise make it clear that you have moved), i will not be able to assign matches for you.

please be patient! i will assign matches and answer questions as quickly as possible, but please keep in mind that i have other responsibilities too!

you don’t need to be following me, but i will be sharing updates here, so it would be a good idea to at least keep an eye on that page/tag.

Kinda cringe to do this so late but I've finally had a moment of peace after christmas and I am ALSO feeling soppy and emotional so here goes:

I know every post in this fandom ever has said that this feels so one-of-a-kind and different from any space they've been in before, AND I'M GONNA SAY IT AGAIN! I have never thought of a tag on tumblr as a sort of weird little family where we all exchange ideas and works of art and memes, or ask questions like it's a community notice board. The friends I've made both here and on tiktok mean the world to me, and I'm so grateful we've created such a community here where people are easy to approach and to maybe get to know on a deeper level. Maybe it's the christmas cheer yay but even if we've sometimes disagreed on some stuff, I couldn't care less right now, I've never been part of a more wholesome community than this.

Käärijä, and Jere as a person, has made me so much more confident than ever before, and I've done things I never thought I could bcs of him. I'm so grateful for such a figure like him in our music scene right now, especially a male figure, who doesn't dismiss his queer/female fanbase and does whatever he wants. His message of kindness not only to other people but also to yourself has helped me SO MUCH over this year. I've never talked about this publicly but the night of the ESC finale when I heard people SCREAMING his name, and lyrics in my native language, I started sniffling like a baby from shock. I've never been particularly proud of my roots, but Käärijä has made being and speaking finnish cool, and none of us have ever seen anything like it here.

To all of you who learn our language, take the time to listen to other finnish music, watch finnish media and maybe even visit our country: thank you. We hope it's been fun and even if all of you move on to other esc artists in the next season of it, we are so grateful for this small moment of recognition. Genuinely, we're so happy people appreciate our culture on its own for once <3 we won't ever forget this.

I hope you've all enjoyed my stupid little translation videos/posts, and that they've been helpful/entertaining in any way lol. I'll admit that ever since I made deeper friendships here I haven't been as active, so if I ever miss an anon please just ask again and i'll get to it! I can't wait to meet some of you who are coming here next summer to see Jere, hopefully by then he's seen sense and hired me as an in-house interpretor for all you fäns from ader kantri. And even if you can't travel here or to any of his other shows: i love you all so much <3

GUESS WHO'S BACK !!!! finally, after a 6 week writing drought, i have been making progress on my tumblr au! so enjoy this lil sneak peak of alex's anonymous ask and the first part of henry's response 😎

After watching two cinematic masterpieces—Shrek 1 and Shrek 2, of course—Alex feels much better. His sister always knows how to get him out of his own head. It’s 9 PM now, AKA prime tumblr-scrolling hours. This realization prompts Alex to open the tumblr app on his phone, sending a surge of nervous energy through his body. He doesn’t worry for long, though, because right at the top of his dash is H’s response. Alex slides into bed, pulling the duvet over his head to create a blanket cocoon, before beginning to read.

Hello, Anon. Firstly, thank you for this kind message. I’m glad my writing meant a lot to you. It’s nice to know that my sad gay pining isn’t completely useless. And don’t apologize, it’s okay to be nervous. I am quite the expert when it comes to being nervous, thanks to the anxiety disorder. As for your question, I’m honoured that you trust me with giving you advice. Unfortunately, there is no way for me to definitively determine whether you’re queer or not, but I can offer you some anecdotes from my experience, and hopefully that will be helpful in some way.

Anonymous ask: the alphabet one, can you do a romantic SFW alphabet? Like how Nikolai would be in a relationship. If you have enough time (and you want to) can you also do the normal NSFW one as well? Like how Nikolai is as a physical lover?

Sorry for the wait anon, but here’s the SFW version. NSFW hopefully coming (pun fully intended 😉) in a day or two! This was my first time at one of these alphabet posts, I found the templates here on tumblr. It kind of goes without saying that these are just my head canons based on the books/Netflix show, and you are of course free to disagree with them😊

A = Affection (How affectionate are they? How do they show affection?) - Nikolai is very affectionate, particularly with close friends and lovers. He didn’t get a lot of affection growing up, so he craves it as an adult. He always keeps things appropriate in front of other people, just hand holding and causal touches, but when you’re alone he can’t keep his hands off you -

B = Best friend (What would they be like as a best friend? How would the friendship start?) - Nikolai is a great friend, he’s warm and kind, and unfailingly loyal. He’s a bit of a joker, so his best friend needs to have a good sense of humour. Nikolai is willing to go to the ends of the earth to help his friends and would lay down his life for them without a second thought -

C = Cuddles (Do they like to cuddle? How would they cuddle?) - Nikolai definitely likes to cuddle, especially in bed, and he’s happy to be the big or the little spoon depending on what his partner prefers -

D = Domestic (Do they want to settle down? How are they at cooking and cleaning?) - Nikolai wants to settle down eventually, he’s a bit of a wanderer but he longs for a family of his own. He’s always been neat and tidy, although growing up in the palace with servants meant he didn’t do much cooking or cleaning as a child, but years in the army/at sea mean he’s picked up at least some of the basics. He can probably make a meal out of very little, but whether it would be edible is up for debate -

E = Ending (If they had to break up with their partner, how would they do it?) - Nikolai hates goodbyes, he’d rather not break up with a partner and for that reason he’d probably put it off as long as possible. He struggles with feelings of not being “enough” and puts a lot of pressure on himself to be a perfect prince, so if he were to end things then I think it would likely come from a place of thinking his partner “deserves better”. Nikolai wouldn’t want to draw things out, but he is a talker, and he would want to say the “right” thing, so for a breakup he’d have a speech planned ahead of time.

F = Fiance(e) (How do they feel about commitment? How quick would they want to get married?) - Nikolai goes all in when it comes to commitment, and he’s no stranger to a hasty proposal. Once he’s found his one, he would see no reason to wait on getting married -

G = Gentle (How gentle are they, both physically and emotionally?) - Nikolai is more than capable of being gentle both physically and emotionally. He puts on a front to the world - the tough privateer and the charming prince - but underneath all that, he’s just a boy wanting to be loved. Once he lets down his walls, he’s all soft touches and sweet words -

H = Hugs (Do they like hugs? How often do they do it? What are their hugs like?) - Nikolai is a big hugger. He’s not afraid to pull a friend in for a hug, either in greeting or as a way to offer comfort. He gives good hugs, the kind that make you feel warm and fuzzy -

I = I love you (How fast do they say the L-word?) - Nikolai wears his heart on his sleeve, as soon as he knows he’s in love with you he’d have no problem saying it out loud -

J = Jealousy (How jealous do they get? What do they do when they’re jealous?) - Nikolai is a bit of a flirt himself so he’d be a total hypocrite if he got upset over his partner doing the same. That being said, he does get jealous occasionally - particularly if someone touches his partner in a less than casual way. He also won’t stand for anyone making his partner uncomfortable, so anyone pushing their luck will earn themselves a sharp word from him -

K = Kisses (What are their kisses like? Where do they like to kiss you? Where do they like to be kissed?) - Nikolai is a fantastic kisser. He likes to kiss you as often as possible, just a peck on the lips in public, and a lot more sensual in private. He likes when you press a kiss to his temple especially if it’s combined with your fingers running through his hair, usually when you’re cuddling together -

L = Little ones (How are they around children?) - Nikolai is great with kids. He’s patient and kind, and he has endless energy to chase them around. His fun sense of humour makes him a hit, especially with the little ones. He wants children of his own someday, and he’d be a loving and attentive father, giving his kids all the affection he himself never got as a child -

M = Morning (How are mornings spent with them?) - He’s a busy man and an early riser, but on the rare morning he can sleep in he loves to cuddle with you and feed you breakfast in bed. Sometimes he wakes even earlier, just so he can admire your sleeping form in the light of the sunrise before he has to start his day -

N = Night (How are nights spent with them?) - Nikolai has trouble sleeping, he has a lot on his mind. His favourite time to talk is late at night, when you’re cuddled up in bed together and the rest of the world is safely shut out -

O = Open (When would they start revealing things about themselves? Do they say everything all at once or wait a while to reveal things slowly?) - In some ways he’s an open book, but he also tends to spend a lot of his time trying to be whoever other people want him to be. He would be slow to really open up to you, but once he felt safe enough to actually drop the act and just be himself, he’d share everything with you -

P = Patience (How easily angered are they?) - Nikolai is generally a patient guy, he’s a smart strategist and knows the value of waiting to get what he really wants. Sometimes he can be impulsive and act rashly, usually when it comes to people he loves being put in harm’s way -

Q = Quizzes (How much would they remember about you? Do they remember every little detail you mention in passing, or do they kind of forget everything?) - Nikolai pays attention to the tiny details and remembers them all. This is partly because of his people pleasing tendencies- the easiest way to be who people want you to be is to study them, work out what they like and then be that person - but it’s also because when he loves someone, he wants to know all of them. He wants to know everything about you, every little mundane detail is fascinating to him -

R = Remember (What is their favourite moment in your relationship?) - Nikolai’s favourite moment would be when you finally confessed your feeling for each other. It’s a moment he would hold onto in bad times, knowing that he loves you and you love him in return is such a big thing for him, he would never take that for granted -

S = Security (How protective are they? How would they protect you? How would they like to be protected?) - Nikolai is very protective of the people he loves, and he would never want you in danger. He would lay down his life to protect you or any of his friends. Words of affirmation make him feel safe and loved -

T = Try (How much effort would they put into dates, anniversaries, gifts, everyday tasks?) - Nikolai puts a lot of effort into dates, anniversaries etc. He’s a romantic at heart and very observant, so he’s a great gift giver too. Day to day, he’s very busy, but he’d still try his best to make you feel loved and appreciated -

U = Ugly (What would be some bad habits of theirs?) - A bad habit of Nikolai’s is getting lost in his projects, whether that’s saving Ravka or his newest invention. Even when his current fixation is completed, he’s straight on to the next one. His mind is always working a mile a minute, and he finds it hard to switch off or rest –

X = Xtra (A random head canon for them.) - Nikolai is great at card tricks. He saw a magician as a child and was obsessed with figuring out the secrets behind his tricks. Once he learned them, he practiced for hours until he perfected the performance -

Y = Yuck (What are some things they wouldn’t like, either in general or in a partner?) - Nikolai has no time or patience for prejudice. He wants a united Ravka, where all its citizens can live happily and peacefully, and that includes Grisha. He values loyalty, and one thing he would not easily forgive from a partner is a betrayal -

I’m very new to the whole agere thing, but after looking into it a little i feel like I’ve been kind of subconsciously doing it? like I said, I didnt really do any research, I’ve been honestly very very shy about bringing it up anywhere.

Whenever my mental health worsens, I end up feeling so.. small? Like I want to just curl up and make myself so small and disappear. Your absolutely making sense and you are not alone at all!

The official term of what you are describing is "impure regression" it's regression that is caused by / causes negative emotions.

I personally don't like the term "impure regression", I usually call it "sad-" or "upset regression" but I wanted to give you the official term, so you can find others who share your experience more easily!

I also have to deal with upset regression quite a lot, it's mainly caused by stress for me aswell.

The AgeRe community has this issue (like most online communities) that it often tries to only show the happy times. All positivity and smiles and playing. But regression can be messy. It can be upsetting and scary. It can feel debilitating.

Just know that you are not broken. You aren't "doing regression wrong" and it's not your fault you feel this way!!

Regression is a form of therapy and can be a trauma response, those things aren't meant to be "just happy". They exist to help you process and work through your feelings, all your feelings. That also means the negative ones.

Some thoughts on writing and posting fic

In the last few days, there have been some lovely posts by fic writers, encouraging an anon who was thinking of posting their first fic but worried about readership. That kind of got me thinking as well, especially as my magnum opus just reached a bit of a milestone on ao3:

Those 50,000 hits (and 1,151 kudos) blow me away, and I'm forever grateful for each and every one of them - but this isn't a post about that. It's a post about how there is no point in comparing these stats to my latest fic, which will take a while to even break 500 hits (and hopefully 50 kudos). Or any of my other fics, for that matter.

Below are some of my personal thoughts on fic writing, the factors that I believe affect the popularity of a fic, and the motivational impact of engagement. My perspective is obviously that of a niche writer, but I think these observations could also be of interest to new writers or anyone struggling with such comparisons. I'll put a cut here because this got very long, but the TL:DR is this:

I write for myself, not for my readers. I post for my readers, not for the numbers.

A quick bit of background info: I have a pretty long history of sharing my writing. When I was little, I used to make comics & picture books for my younger brother, and in secondary school, I used to write stories in my English notebooks that only my teacher ever got to read. In my teens, I wrote fanfic in a couple of obscure fandoms and even a novel-length original story. The readership was just a handful of people, including my closest Internet and IRL friends, and I was very happy with that.

Before YR came along, I had not managed to write a creative text in over a decade. My studies and work had put out the spark, and I thought it was gone for good. So when YR reignited it, I very much started writing for myself. I'm sure every writer knows that feeling of something taking shape in your head and begging to be let out, as well as the satisfaction of seeing it all come together on your screen. At least I really hope they do.

Still, I knew right off the bat that I wanted to share the fic. I didn't care how many people read it, I just really hoped someone would. I missed the feeling of seeing people get joy out of something I created and connecting with them through it. Especially as I didn't have any other outlet for my YR thoughts and feels at the time. I also wanted to contribute something to the fandom that helped me regain this long-lost part of myself - and of course I could use some encouraging feedback too.

So that was how my magnum opus started out, and because of the timing, it became more popular than I imagined. The fandom was young (I started posting in August 2021, S2 wasn't even confirmed until September) and everyone was just really hungry for more. The vast majority of fics were focused on Wilmon from the start, but people were interested in pretty much anything exploring the rich and still largely undiscovered world of the show. My fic was niche and I had neither the guts nor the platform to promote it, but many people still found it.

I consider myself unbelievably lucky to have started posting at such an opportune time. The fandom has evolved in these 2+ years, and things are quite different for authors starting out now.

For one thing, the chorus of writers has expanded as more people have discovered the show and been inspired by it. As wonderful as that is, it does make it harder for any single voice to stand out. I think promoting one's work in fandom spheres such as tumblr and writing compelling tags and descriptions on ao3 has probably become more important, and of course it also helps if you've got some existing readers who follow your work.

Because for another thing, the readership has changed. Some fans have either left entirely or only follow their favourite writers now, while others have joined. New fans tend to start with the fandom classics, other wonderful recommendations, or the fics with the most kudos or comments. Which makes a lot of sense when there are thousands of fics to choose from, but it inevitably puts newer and more obscure writers at a disadvantage. Furthermore, it feels as if the number of readers who prefer completed fics may have increased, as people have seen some fics get abandoned along the way (and they now have more completed works to choose from). Again, that's very understandable, but it can feel discouraging to multi-chap writers.

I also can't help but wonder if there's been a shift in the fandom's interests, especially since S2. There's more canon to follow or disregard now, and people have had more time to develop fanon and their personal headcanons. All that affects what they want to read.

For example, the developments in S2 may have put some people off certain characters/ships/dynamics or made them fall in love with others. They may have started curating their reading to their hopes and expectations for S3. Some might even favour AUs to avoid speculation or guarantee Wilmon endgame, or they might long for fics solely focused on Wilmon and their love after they spent so much of S2 apart. There's nothing wrong with any of these approaches - but they do curb the already lower interest in fics focused on other characters, gen fics, rarepairs, unusual takes, and so on

To circle back to the example of my first fic, it would not get that kind of engagement if I started posting it now. It might be more popular than my other fics thanks to Wilmon featuring prominently as side characters, but it would still be outsider POV. In fact, even readers interested in the characters I focused on might be deterred by, say, the slow burn and lack of sexual content (now that those characters are a more established non-canon side ship and there's more fic available).

In a lot of ways, it's paradoxical to even speculate on this. If I started my first fic now, it would either be a totally different story (compliant with S2), or it might not be finished at all. What those 50,000 hits don't tell you is that a large portion of them were people checking for updates. The project completely took over my life for 10 months, and I doubt I would've got through some of the rough patches without the wonderful readers who were excited to follow it as a WIP, even when my updates got sparse from all the stress. My other fics would either not exist at all or have far less engagement if it wasn't for the loyal readers left over from that first fic, and the first fic wouldn't have as many reads without all the people who have reread it (as I know some have). And of course it is now also benefiting from the large number of existing kudos.

Anyway. My point is that comparing stats is neither fair nor useful, and that doesn't just apply to my own fics or niche fics in general. Every fic is published at a certain point in time or over a certain period of time, in a fandom that is always in flux. The things that inspire us as writers may not align with the interests of the readers - or even if they do, the readers might not notice or be aware of it.

So the question is, how to reconcile the need to share your work and connect with people with the ever-changing odds of those people finding your work?

I'm not going to lie, sometimes it is extremely hard. I often feel really low and doubt myself a lot after posting, but I think I've made it to a point where I don't get too caught up on it anymore.

One key thing is to draw a distinction between the writing and posting. The writing itself should always be primarily for me, because it's my creative energy, time, and effort that goes into it. I should be able to retain that feeling of satisfaction and pride in the story itself, because if I hang my hopes on the audience and they simply don't find the fic, I will just feel like it was all wasted. The value of the fic and especially my value as a writer cannot be tied to anyone else's reaction or lack of it.

Still, the two distinct parts of the process are never completely separate for me. I'm sure they can be for some writers, but I do need that feeling of connecting with people through my creations, and the extra motivation to stick with the effort (to get through longer projects, or to start new ones).

So the second thing I do is, I try to hold on to the mindset I used to have as a kid or teen writing for my brother, my teacher, or my friends. To internalise that my readers aren't numbers on a screen, but real, human people who have taken an interest in this thing I've created. They've allowed me to share it with them and had thoughts on it (whether they put those in a comment or not). Maybe it was just a moment's diversion for them, or maybe it actually moved them. Either way, we connected for a while.

Here, I must acknowledge again that I am incredibly privileged. I've got a handful of regulars who have been reading me since August 2021, and another handful who have jumped on board along the way. Many of them not only read but also comment on what I post. Even that latest two-parter I mentioned at the start has 19 comment threads, and I'm fully aware of how rare and precious that is.

But the fact remains that the contrast to my first fic has still been an adjustment, and I find that thinking about engagement in terms of people rather than numbers has helped me put it into perspective.

I could never find a room full of people to read my writing in real life, but there they are, reading it on their phones or computers and leaving twenty hits on my fic. Every person leaving kudos is basically equivalent to my teacher returning my notebook with that single check mark that meant "I read this and I enjoyed it." As for the individual comments, they aren't too different from my very small group of friends in high school telling me they loved something and couldn't wait for more. In a way, they're even more amazing, because these people don't even know me, but they are still investing their time and emotions into my fics!

Of course this mindset also has its pitfalls. I often feel like I'm letting people down by not writing faster, for example, but that's just one more thing I need to work on. All in all, I feel like I'm definitely on to something here, so thank you for letting me share these thoughts with you!

magnus is a size-changing clouded leopard

Magnus gives himself one more luxurious moment of admiring black scales and liquid silver light and the delicate, chiming trills of a happy and practically high dragon.

Nets of his magic lash out from the water, the current of magically charged water charging the array Magnus carved into the bed of the brook. Magic like this would maim almost anyone, but for a dragon, it might not be enough.

Magnus doesn’t want to hurt him — not now that he knows — but he also wants to keep him, which means being heavy handed.

His dragon doesn’t growl, instead he gives a mournfully betrayed trill as he recognizes the magic trying to pin him down. He bites through the first three chains and tears through four of them, but as Magnus hoped, the magic he’s consuming from the chains is adding to his intoxication.

It’s better than a sleep potion specifically tailored for dragons — which are never guaranteed to work and rarely do — and Magnus chuffs as he approaches. His paws are deliberately heavy on the moss, and he can see the moment his little thief realizes he has an audience.

There’s a loud, spine-tingling crack of noise as his teeth crack through another band of magic and his dragon gives a deep, questioning trill.

He’s sniffing the air, scenting in deep, almost methodical huffs of breath and it’s clear he can’t scent or see an intruder. There are only six chains left and Magnus leaps across the space of the roof and tackles his thief.

What starts as a defensive snarl turns into a bewildered yet excited trill. His dragon abandons trying to eat the chains to come up and sniff curiously at Magnus. It’s clear he hasn’t yet connected Magnus with the magic or the trap. He probably thinks Magnus is a magical creature and Magnus purrs, deep and low and reaches out, nuzzling the small but vicious muzzle.

A moment later Magnus has a dragon now the size of a caracal pressing up against him. He’s making curious sounds and staring at Magnus with large dark eyes that Magnus wishes he had better light to see.

It turns out that Magnus himself is the perfect distraction. The very fact that it’s his magic that his dragon is enamored with means that Magnus will have some sway over him no matter what form he’s in. Which means that instead of getting sharp claws that glint like obsidian in the night to the belly, he has a curious and friendly dragon. A sleepy dragon who, when he goes to snap another chain, Magnus distracts by chirping.

There is magic in his voice and Magnus earns his little thief’s full attention as his focus centers back on Magnus. There’s a moment where he wavers, as if unsure what he should pick and then he falls.

The weight of Magnus’ magic working its way into his system has finally knocked him unconscious and Magnus doesn’t bother shifting. He portals them both to his room below and — because he saw the way his little dragon leaned towards the magical heaters on the roof — deposits them both in his study.

There’s still a thick rug in front of the fireplace from the last time Ragnor visited and Magnus lights the fire with a swish of his tail.

He settles next to cool scales and his tail taps the ground as his dragon unconsciously seeks him out, looking for warmth and the embrace of Magnus’ magic.

He’s sweet even in his sleep and his scales chime as he curls under Magnus’ chin. Magnus croons with a deep, reverberating purr that is imbued with his magic and settles his head down on cool, almost delicate feeling scales. Magnus knows that he’s being incredibly forward with a being that can probably match him in a fight, but he can’t help but follow the instinct that calls to him.

His dragon thief sleeps off the magical high and sleeps blissfully until Magnus finally feels the first stirrings of lucidity returning to him. He’s still out of it, Magnus wouldn’t risk letting him wake otherwise.

Magnus shifts to his human form, his dragon pillowed on his lap and the closer he gets to Magnus, the less sharp his dragon’s spines and scales get. He nuzzles Magnus’ wrist, inhaling deeply and Magnus coos as a first and second eyelid flicker, as if he’s finally going to wake up.

What is Secret Rocker Santa?

How it works:

you must read these instructions!

the deadline to sign up is november 28th. there are two ways that you can sign up: the first is to send me a submission (or an ask) with your completed questionnaire (found here). while the first two questions are required, you can otherwise provide as much or as little information as you want. the second option is to sign up via google forms.

please reblog this post! (this isn’t a strict requirement, but it would be greatly appreciated and helps to ensure that enough people will participate!)

your blog doesn’t have to be classic rock-related, you just need to be a fan. (this project will also be using a very broad definition of “classic rock,” so nearly any music from 1950s-1990s counts.)

you can send your partner whatever you want (as long as you do not reveal your identity). your job is to make your partner feel happier! (some ideas: lyrics, pictures, facts, play games, chat and of course do things that are not only associated with classic rock).

be careful - make sure you are messaging your assigned partner anonymously.

please tag messages that you receive from your secret santa and any other related posts as #SRS22, so your santa will be able to find your answers more easily.

REMINDERS:

if you’re not committed to sending asks to your partner and/or responding to your santa at least a few (2-3) times a week, please do not sign up.

while the primary focus of this project is classic rock, any additional interests you list may be used as a secondary way of helping to find a good match for you. with that in mind, don't hesitate to list any interests and hobbies you might have, whether they relate to classic rock or not! this will especially come in handy if there are many applicants who like a particular band, or if i am having trouble finding a match for you based on your favorite bands.

if your santa has not contacted you in over a week, message me and i will gently remind them or find you another one.

as a general rule, be nice! anyone who is rude to the another participant will be removed from the project.

make sure to answer all of your santa’s messages! you don’t have to answer right away, but don’t ignore them.

please let me know if you experience any problems at all (for example, if i have made a mistake, or you are having problems with either your own santa or the person you are assigned to)

if you are not already following your partner’s blog, you probably shouldn’t do it right away, because they might guess that you are their santa.

it’s useful to have an easy-to-find “about me” page so that your santa will have a better chance of finding something to talk to you about!

please try to keep a note of who you’ve been assigned to! you’ll also get a personal number which you will have to remember, so please make a note of it or save the message i send you.

IF YOU CHANGE YOUR URL DURING THE PROJECT PLEASE LET ME KNOW. if you don’t let me know about your new URL (or otherwise make it clear that you have moved), i will not be able to assign matches for you.

please be patient! i will assign matches and answer questions as quickly as possible, but please keep in mind that i have other responsibilities too!

you don't need to be following me, but i will be sharing updates here, so it would be a good idea to at least keep an eye on that page.

Confession: i started to keep track of this game when it was annunced ironically because 'ahah gacha game i wonder how they will fuck things up' but now i check this blog daily to see if there are any new infos or cool things from the datamine 😅

Honestly, anon, that makes me super happy to hear!!

If I can do a bit of a "confession" myself: I was honestly genuinely disappointed when they first confirmed P5X would be a gacha game- I have a personal policy against playing them because I hate gacha mechanics, and it's easily been my least favorite aspect of P5X even while playing the beta- but I decided to stick with it because I was curious where they were going with the characters and story, so I definitely do understand the initial negative "gacha game" response a lot of people have had to it. I remember right after that announcement, most of the conversation about P5X at least between Tumblr and what I was seeing in Youtube comments suddenly was just complaints and hate for it, even when we barely knew anything about it, and it was disappointing that it felt like so few people wanted to even give it a chance!

A big part of why I made this blog was because it felt like almost no one else was sharing/talking about info here on Tumblr, and it certainly wasn't getting collected anywhere, so I figured I might as well be the blog I wanted to see, and hopefully get some more people to give P5X a shot in the process. So hearing you're one of the people who've changed their minds about P5X, and that this blog is helping in some way, is awesome!! Glad you're here with us :D

I just read your star wars au and I can't get over how GOOD your prose is. (?!?) It flows so naturally, and it feels like I can instantly see the entire depth of the scenes you create... I'm actually obsessed
