Rumata all but leapt from the horse as its hooves ground into the loose gravel. Both monks stationed either side of the gate ran toward him, deceptively frail arms waving in their oversized tunics.
Rumata pushed some stray hairs from his face and gripped the hilt of his sword firmly before raising his wrist. four silver bracelets shone in the firelight.
“Boy if you don’t get the fuck outta my way you’re going to find out just in whose name it really is!”
“In His name!” the pair replied before backing away and returning to the wall.
Just as quickly as he had arrived, Don Rumata disappeared in the keep grounds.
“Sheeeeeeeesh!” one monk proclaimed with a screech, pushing fingers into his forearm.
“Bet.” replied the other.

“I don’t like how you sound, Anton,” he said in Russian.
“I don’t like a lot of things, Alexander Vasilievich,” said Rumata.
“I don’t like that we’ve tied our hands and feet with the very formulation of the problem. I don’t like that it’s called the Problem of Nonviolent Impact. Because under my conditions, that means a scientifically justified inaction. I’m aware of all your objections! And I’m aware of the theory. But here there are no theories, here there are typical fascist practices, here animals are murdering humans every minute! Here everything is pointless. Knowledge isn’t enough, and gold is worthless, because it comes too late.”

I meant to send you this right after you recommended 'Horus Heresy' to me (getting it for christmas!) but I forgot, shame on me! I wanted to recommend something sci-fi back as thanks and so, as you are a fellow enjoyer of the 'Who watches the Watchers' TNG episode, I feel like you might also enjoy 'Hard to Be a God' by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. Lots of the same themes, moral questions and philosophical ponderings as WWTW although funnily enough HTBAG came out a couple of years before the og star trek series. Common elements like Earth enjoying its post-scarcity utopia and the earthlings venturing out into space, stumbling upon less technologically advanced civilizations, getting into debates on what their roles on these alien societies should be, their own prime directive-like (yet different) code of ethics, the fear of interfering clashing with their humanist ideals, etc. the good shit!
It's probably my personal favourite tackling of these ideas to be honest, and it's quite a quick read too, just short of 200 pages. You follow a little guy who's sent from earth to an alien planet whose culture has not progressed beyond the Middle Ages. He's there as an undercover operative struggling to remain an observer, as he experiences not the logical historical next step of a renaissance but instead a descent of the kingdom into a feudal-fascist state.
It has a very unique approach of its own. And at least to me, it sits in this difficult but satisfying balance of being at its core optimistic about mankind but without being wishy-washy, while also managing to be very depressing, but without ever being bitter and cynical.
I'm always afraid of over-hyping stuff to people so I'll just end with: If the above sounds interesting to you, I strongly recommend it! 👍
*leaves this in your inbox and runs*
I am tracking this down immediately! I’ve been in a bit of a sci-fi slump of wanting to try something new, so I have been reading PKD’s Ubik, but for only 200 pages “Hard to be a God” sounds like it has everything I love in sci-fi boiled down into a digestible package. So, seriously, thank you for the recommendation! Perfect timing!
On the same note, if you ever do or did dip into the Heresy, feel free to shoot me a message about it if you wanna chat! I love people live-blogging it to me, and with your taste in sci-fi with no background in the wider Warhammer franchise, I’m very curious as to how you will feel about it.
Thanks again!

I just read How to Bury a Gentile, and I utterly loved it!! The pacing, how it began so worrying and confusing to reader as much as the Rabbi and ratcheted up in urgency as the story progressed! How, the conclusion was abrupt and satisfying, like a release or a gasp of air. I immediately followed you and am now scrolling through the rest of your content. Thank you. You wrote beautifully.💕
Awwwww

The thing about crossing over to the dark side is that once you’re there, it doesn’t feel dark at all.

How to Build a Girl
The title sounds like it was written by an alt-right 16 year old, complaining about their single life and the fact that no girl will date them. So instead they create a perfect girlfriend who will do whatever they say. It could be a comedy, a horror, there’s unlimited potential. Thankfully, this film isn’t about this, it’s based on the life of Caitlin Moran, writer of the book of the same name and the screenwriter for the film.
Beanie Feldstein is Johanna, a 16 year from Wolverhampton. She aspires to be a writer and sends a review to music magazine D&ME where she eventually gets hired. She goes to a gig in Dublin to see John KIte who she falls in love with. After her initial review gets rejected for being too girly and wishy-washy, she invents the persona, Dolly Wilde, who quickly becomes infamous for having  a cruel critic style and being personal in her reviews.
Tumblr media
First and foremost, Beanie Feldstein, who I think is fab, has a terrible terrible accent, I mean the midlands accent isn’t nice on the ears to begin with, but someone impersonating that, terribly, makes it even worse. It’s terrible. And in all honesty it was hard to get over that, mainly because Beanie is in nearly every scene and in nearly every scene, she talks. So that’s a big issue. I didn’t really like her character either, when she turns to Dolly Wilde I don’t think you’re particularly meant to but even when she is Johanna I found her character really whiny. It was also a bit peado in places, like she’s a 16 year old girl and she’s getting hit on, and I’m sure she has sex with them (we don’t see anything) and it’s just a little awkward. Like, it’s a bit noncy right, but it’s not even addressed as an issue or problematic. I don’t know, I just felt uncomfortable watching them scenes. At times I felt the story was too American, it didn’t really feel like a British coming-of-age film and I do think us Brits normally do a pretty good job of that genre, the struggle, the grimness. But HTBAG was a bit too bright and uplifting. Maybe that’s my fault for being a depressing old fart. Paddy Considine and Laurie Kynaston as Johanna’s dad and brother were enjoyable in their roles but I felt that Alfie Allen didn’t really haven enough screen time for us to care enough about his character and therefore the relationship between Johanna and himself. There was a good message about re-inventing yourself but it was a chore to get the message across. There are better coming-of-age films about empowerment, like Booksmart, also starring Beanie Feldstein. Just watch that instead.
Tumblr media
1/5 How to Build a Girl wasn’t for me, it wasn’t funny, it’s characters weren’t likeable and at times it felt like it didn’t know what it was trying to be. It was a bit of a mess. And can we please just find British actresses to play British characters?!

How to Build a Girl
One of my favorite pastimes is reading positive reviews about Alfie Allen’s performances. His new movie HtBaG comes out in 2 (!) days on streaming and VOD and while the reviews are mostly positive, there are some 1.5 stars reviews out there as well. On RT, it’s got a score of 80 so far, so it’s not bad. However, whenever a reviewer mentions Alfie in this movie, it’s always positive. Like this:
“This leads to a third strong performance in the film - after those of Feldstein and Considine - and the introduction of pop star and singer of sad songs John Kite (Alfie Allen, Theon from “Game of Thrones”), who is to be her first interview subject (and it turns out that Allen is a very good singer!). (...) For a brief moment, the film again finds its footing, with Alfie Allen’s acting range saving the day”
Well, Mr. Singer of Sad Songs is going to sweep my feet off the ground :)

I don't really use twitter anymore and I used to change my layout every year over there to a holiday/Christmas shipwrecked theme so I'm thinking I might do that here after Thursday:,)

I've started reading The infinite & the Divine and it's very, very good!
I started with Twice dead King: Ruin & Reign and they were also very good.
I was suprised however to be reading a boko that's written in the same prose I write in, though.
It's a very fun read. I do recommend.
After this is Severed, then i'll re-read HTBAG (Hard to be a God) again.

So the good news is: it's been a great writing week and I not only have this week's chapter of "Walk Me Home" written, but I'm almost done next week's chapter. (Famous last words, haha.)
The bad news (not really): I'm probably going to wait until tomorrow to post because I've got my work Christmas party tonight, plus "How to Be a Ghost" premieres in a couple of hours. (Yay!)
So neither of those things are a huge deal but I figured it makes sense to wait. I think it will be worth it! 😉
