I know we've all worn the "I do not GAZE at Scully" line to death but--
Like babe. That's 75% of what you do with your time.
The rest is 20% imagining gazing at Scully when she's not around and the last 5% is getting proof of the unexplained to have an excuse to gaze at Scully while she disagrees with you

so, final thoughts on rain king!
this one has a long cold open, but it's a good one. the red herring of sheila crying into her chocolates, and the subsequent heart-shaped hale storm, is pretty swell. the storm coincides with when holman finished his weather segment and presumably saw the engagement announcement in the paper the first time.
it's an extremely shippy episode (a running gag is townsfolk keep mistaking mulder and scully for a married couple) with some real wtf moments. at one point, a cow is dropped on mulder's motel room. i remember being slightly exasperated with this episode at the time because i felt like there was a lot of MSR bait-and-switch chewing up my precious x-files scenery, but now i enjoy these sorts of episodes on their merits.
and there are merits! i genuinely like the story of a weatherman whose pent-up emotions cause strange meteorological phenomenon. i like the shitty fake rainmaker and his awesome red snakeskin boots. i like the kid twirling a baton that greets mr & mrs spooky when they arrive. there are a lot of fun small touches here, and scully offers a compelling monologue on friends to lovers. nevertheless, overall the episode is rather silly compared to the show's usual comedy fare, which at its best tends to run to the dry or absurdist, and the ship-baiting feels stale by the end of runtime.
the rain king is a solid 3 out of 5 cows caught in tornadoes. an enjoyable lighter episode, but not quite on par with classic parody episodes.

Just spent the last hour and a half singing along with the soundtrack for The Sound of Music. There were definitely large and strange dance moves on display in the kitchen and living room.

I find it incredibly fucking hilarious that in 'the rain king' in the ending scene where all the couples at the high school reunion are slow dancing and kissing, the camera zooms in on a woman with the exact same haircut as scully, leading you to believe for exactly one second that it IS scully, making out on the dance floor, before pulling back and revealing mulder and scully standing amongst all the couples side-to-side. These overtly shippy episodes make me feel like im being toyed with, but I'm not complaining.

fake relationship is one of my favourite tropes of all time so shout-out to x files for not only giving us an entire episode about it but peppering it into the plot since season 1.
people straight up do not believe them whenever they try to deny it and i am LIVING for it

Other fbi agents watching mulder and scully embrace in a hallway and mulder kisses her on the head. Yeah normal behavior between partners
