Okay, all my Red White and Royal Blue movie feelings:

(Spoilers ahead)

Taylor Zakhar Perez really put his whole pussy into playing Alex. He does it perfectly and from a few press videos I've seen of him he really loved the character

Nicholas Galitzine is pretty, but he's not really playing Henry to me. Movie Henry and Book Henry are two different characters in my mind.

The changes they made in the film to the book work well, but I still kind of wish we got Alex's bi awakening and that they hadn't cut out June. Like she didn't need to have a big role but I wish they hadn't made him into an only child, and also kind of odd his parents are still together (like it took me way too long to realise his parents were still together and that he'd already had his bisexual crisis)

That said, all the changes they made for the film worked well to simplify the plot and create a more cohesive story, so I'm not mad about any of it.

(Though I still find it so funny that they made the queen a king instead to be less like real life, and then the real queen went and died during production)

I just finished Heartstopper season 2 yesterday, and I looooved the colour grading in that show so much. I don't really like the colour-grading in this film, BUT it's not BAD - I just kind of wish it weren't all so muted. That said, I do like the camera work (like when they slow zoom into a scene of the two of them talking, to show the two of them slowly getting more intimate with each other was lovely), and the graphics they use in the montages are great.

I really love how they decided to do the texting/emailing parts of the film - having them read out the texts instead of it all being on screen is fantastic. Like not to compare it to Heartstopper, but I didn't read any of the texts on Heartstopper because I draw while I watch stuff, and I can't be arsed to pause what I'm drawing every 5 second to read a text. I really like how RW&RB narrate the texts, and the one scene early in the film where they superimposed Henry into scenes with Alex while they were texting each other was SO GOOD.

The dialogue is really great, I love the writing. The flirting and banter between Alex and Henry is perfect.

The making out and teases at sex are really hot too. Like we were all worried about the chemistry between these two but they look great together in those scenes (to me at least)

I like that after Henry runs away from Alex after being at the summer house, the movie follows Henry's POV for a while instead of sticking with Alex.

I'm so glad I enjoyed this movie. It's definitely something I'd want to watch more than once.

Doorways and corridors as liminal spaces in Heartstopper pt 1 of 8

Doorways and corridors are not just scenery in Heartstopper — they are silent characters supporting a journey. 

Charlie Spring walks through a corridor to meet Ben after winter break, and passes through a doorway where a teacher is taking down some decorations. Could this be a signal of things changing?

When Charlie reaches the library, he finds the library empty and a text from Ben asking to meet up later. This opens a space in Charlie’s heart when he meets Nick a few minutes later.

We do see him actually pass through the doorway into his new form room. He exchanges inanities with the teacher and then turns to go to his seat. When he lays eyes on Nick, you can tell he is immediately struck. I think this doorway, into his new form room, represents Charlie’s imminent relationship with Nick. 

Then we see Charlie coming through a doorway into a corridor and passing through another door to meet up with Ben in the music room. They kiss, Ben says “still don’t tell anyone about us,” and leaves. We see Charlie through the window as the door closes. The beginning of the end of their relationship. 

The very next doorway is Nick and Charlie bumping into each other as they try to pass through it at the same time. Destiny has brought them together! They are about to embark on something together … 

Montage of passing in the hallway/meeting in form and saying hi and then they meet up on the way to math class. After Nick has doodled on Charlie’s hand, they easily pass through a doorway big enough for the two of them as though the world is bending to make more space for the two of them as they become more comfortable with each other. They happen to run into Ben who completely ignores Charlie. That door between Ben and Charlie has just closed a little more.

Charlie exits the bus and gets a text from Ben to meet up in the library. At this meeting, Ben kisses Charlie, but Charlie doesn’t really kiss back and he’s distracted by the doodle on his hand Nick left there yesterday. Although Ben has called Charlie to him, Charlie is drawing away. 

The next doorway we see is really a gateway. Ben is kissing a girl.  That does it for Charlie. He slams that proverbial door shut hard.

Charlie describes his ideal boyfriend and clears the window only to see Nick Nelson. 

Nick watches through a fence as Charlie runs (faster than his classmates). 

Next we see Charlie struggling in front of an open locker door. Nick asks if Charlie wants to step onto his turf and Charlie can’t turn him down.

Charlie walks down a corridor, through a doorway, and faces a closed door to the locker room where he can hear people talking about him. He pushes the door open and Nick stands up and says “hi”, welcoming into the space. Charlie is so brave for pushing that door open! 

The next time he steps into the locker room, “In my self-made isolation, you’re my only inspiration / when the mirror says I’m ugly and if anybody loves me it’s a lie” is playing, but none of the boys notice him or talk to him. We see Nick talking strategy and then some scenes on the field.

Cut to Ben walking down the corridor. It feels so ominous and closed in, especially when it cuts back to Nick and Charlie working on tackling at the goal posts. You can see Nick’s admiration for Charlie’s improvement and Charlie feeling good that Nick is complimenting him. They are out in the world and it’s just them and life is good.

Then we see Ben through a “window” waiting for Charlie. Charlie walks out one door (leaving Nick standing in the doorway behind) and through another to meet Ben. He turns around a corner and has a conversation with Ben which ends with Ben forcing a kiss on Charlie and then Nick pulling Ben off. They are in the corridor. 

Nick puts himself between Ben and Charlie, tells Ben to piss off, checks that Charlie is ok, then the two of them walk off through the corridor together, out the door, and out the school gate. There is a feeling of release as they walk outside and say goodbye.

last movie: I just watched All You Ever Wished For yesterday and Puppy Love the day before that (it's been a week for bad romcoms). In theaters I saw Jurrasic Park in 3D for National Cinema Day a few weeks ago.

currently watching: Currently in season 5 of Glee and of course keeping up on Ahsoka as it airs.

other stuff I watched this year: TV: I was watching White Collar and Red Dwarf, I still need to finish both of those but Glee distracted me. I also rewatched all of Farscape, Stargate SG-1, and Jericho, and of course Heartstopper when season 2 came out. Movies wise I saw Barbie and Oppenheimer, the new Scream, and Cocaine Bear. I feel like there were other new things Ive watched recently but I don't remember what.

shows I dropped this year/didn't finish: I haven't watched any new shows to drop, but I did pause in my Red Dwarf rewatch for White Collar and then I paused that for a Glee rewatch, but I will get back to them, eventually.

currently reading: Still need to finish Red White and Royal Blue, but I just started I Keep My Exoskeletons to Myself. And then for fanfic I'm in the middle of How Bright We Burn and Bad Seeds (both Seblaine at Dalton AUs) and Don't You Remember (A Kurtbastian fic). I'm also in the middle of the audiobook for Stranger Than Fanfiction

currently listening to: I've of course been obsessively listening to the Nerdy Prudes Must Die album since it came out, and then also just all of Chord Overstreets songs. And then for podcasts I've been listening to Woe.Begone of course but I'm way behind on Malevolent and Celler Letters.

currently working on: I've been outlining my 3-part Season 2/3 AU that I'm affectionately referring to as The Hevans Saga, The Klaine Saga, and The Seblaine Saga. And of course I'm still in the middle of writing things for Seblaine week and I started a part 2 of my Autistic!Kurt AU.

current obsession: Seblaine almost feels too obvious, but it's accurate. But also just thinking about Glee in general and specifically Blaine, Kurt, and Sam and all of the ways they were screwed over by the show and how many fics I want to write to fix it.

1. 9-1-1

though that's pretty obvious....the weewoo show owns me body and soul

I just finished this yesterday and I am obsessed, Jesper and Wylan my beloveds

3. Outer Banks

My brother actually suggested this to me and I did not really I was so susceptible to dorky surfer boys until JJ Maybank graced my screen but....

4. The Last of Us

I love love the video game as does my best friend and so we started watching this together once it came out and just like wow they've done an incredible job.

5. Fairy Tail

This show has a special place in my heart and is the reason I started writing fanfic. I am very attached to these characters and they made up such a big part of my life at one point.

6. Criminal Minds

I was obsessed with crime procedurals as a kid; ncis, bones etc, but was never allowed to watch this one. I only finally started it last year and I'm obsessed.

7. Stranger Things

I was reluctant to get into this show but it instantly had me hooked!

8. Heartstopper

I read the comic on Tumblr yeeeaarss agoo and it's so wonderful to see the story coming to life on screen.

I literally found out yesterday that there's a prequel of the hunger games, and that explains why I was so confused about the trailer. I was like "when did we get this really long flashback? Did I miss it?"

(about that post you made yesterday abt how you just don’t like male centric media) i think the problem for me is that the genres or whatever you wanna call them that i like the most don’t have good female representation, or even if they do hardly any are lesbian, and if it came between reading abt an osa couple or reading abt a gay male couple i would choose the latter. with books it’s pretty easy to just get one that has good representation for gay male couples and then just imagine them as butch women in my head (it always throws me off when i see fanart or something and it’s like woah! that’s a man) if all the male centric media i consumed genderswapped all the characters i would like it 1000x better, but i deal (& i know it’s like ‘write the book you want to read!’ but i suck at writing). i don’t watch a lot of tv, but as far as shows go there are actually a few good ones with female main characters, like the half of it (you should watch that if you haven’t) you mentioned heartstopper.. everyone was so obsessed with heartstopper but some parts were kinda bad cringy to watch, since i just literally can’t take males seriously lmao.. same with young royals and things like that. like every single tv show with/about a lesbian romance got canceled and the movie prom sucked. i don’t know, male centric media doesn’t always bore me but i wish there was just better female centric, lesbian centric, etc.

i can kinda get u bc i love dystopian novels n i read those without much trouble bc idk it’s easier to pretend they’re not men anyways but like if it’s shows or movies i generally avoid ones that r very male-heavy. if it’s about gay men usually i can handle it a bit better bc i can relate somewhat but like het men … no thanks. or ones that r male-centric in a different way like the TV show You.. for one it’s all him obsessing over other women so women are a p big part of the show but it shows men from a diff perspective so i like it. but dexter for example… tried to watch it like 5 different times, never got past like episode 6 or sth. there’s def some exceptions for me but generally i get instantly bored if a show or movie is mainly about men or from a male perspective. when it’s gay men it’s sth i can watch sometimes tho, but those are also rare. also ur right lesbian representation sucks.. anon if u like tho maybe u should check out the 100. the het scenes r ignorable and it’s not great lesbian rep either but it’s got a lot of female MCs & the main character is like. obsessed with a certain lesbian hehe.

also thank u for the rec!!! i did watch half of it. i loved the lesbian rep and the fact that she had this dumbass straight male friend who respected her 😭 also iirc the ending was more realistic but still somewhat happy ?? it was nice. i liked blue is the warmest colour a lot bc the story is sad as hell and the actresses are AMAZING but the sex scenes are way too much (i first watched it with my mom when i was like 15… it was very awkward. she asked me questions that i did not want to be asked) & also the actresses said the director (male) was.. not good to say the least. i also wanna watch the colour purple, i finished the book recently and was weeping.. i loved hearing from the perspective of a traumatised lesbian who clearly didn’t understand her own feelings bc i could somewhat relate and getting to see her grow 😭😭.. it’s just so well written. orphan black, wentworth, sugar rush… just some faves w memorable lesbian rep

Been spending time with the family today :) It’s been really nice. Went out shopping with my mom. I’ll do a haul in a sec.

I also read the first Heartstopper book. It’s been sitting on my self for about a year. I thought “hey, wouldn’t it be a great idea to reserve a copy of the rest of the books on Libby? Ok, let’s do the next two for now. Given the popularity, it’ll probably be a few weeks until it’s my turn to borrow.” Hahaha WRONG. 2 and 3 arrived yesterday while I have two audiobooks I was gonna take it slow with. So now I’m scrambling to read a Heartstopper a day while also getting ready for my summer classes

(That’s for the summer classes, not the forced reading. Forced reading on my own terms is fun :) )

My favorite thing to have happened in Heartstopper:

Charlie has Muse’s Resistance album art of his wall 🥹🥹🥹 My baby has the same music tastes as me (and by baby I mean child, bc he is a child)
