I love Zutara as much as the next girlie, but I think people romanticizing Zuko catching Azula's lightning in the Final Agni Kai are doing Zuko's character a massive disservice. He would have done that for anyone. Not just anyone in the Gaang, anyone.
He did it for the division he ended up getting burned over. He did it for his subordinate that was going to fall to his death after the ship was struck by lightning. He did it for Lee, when he was kidnapped by Gao. He did it for Iroh, when he confronted his dad and tried to break him out of prison. He did it for the whole Gaang at the Western Air Temple. He did it for Sokka, Suki, and Hakoda at the Boiling Rock.
His whole character revolves around saving everyone else first. Hell, he tried to save Zhao of all people! There's no way that would have gone well for Zuko if Zhao had actually taken his hand. He always does what he thinks is right first before considering his own safety.
Zuko always saves other people. Even if, especially if, he can't save himself.

I’m an amateur poet and I poem I wrote reminded me suspiciously of Machete and Vasco
“You smile with all the radiance of the sun
I smile with a slight curl of my lip
Could you love that
Could you love me”
Maybe Machete possessed me while writing it

The acting and the blocking in episode 7 after Greta and Carson come back to the house is so good. We can feel the tension in the room. Jess, Lupe, and Esti have been back long enough for Lupe to start a game of Dominos with Maybelle, but none of them have changed clothes, so I think we can infer that they returned still pretty recently.
Tumblr media
In this scene, Jess is full of nervous energy, pacing behind Lupe’s chair as well as rocking back and forth on the balls of her feet. Given how we’ve seen this character act just last episode in two spaces where she feels really comfortable (the bar and the team house after they win), the fact that Jess is standing all by herself, not touching any of her teammates, really shows how shaken up the atmosphere of the team is after Jo’s transfer. Because when Jess is happy, she’s touchy - she hugs her teammates and grabs or pats their shoulders. In the bar, she’s hanging off of Lupe almost every time they’re on screen. In the scene above, she’s staying close to Lupe, but even though we can almost feel how much Jess wants to reach out for physical comfort, she’s stopping herself and trying to keep busy in other ways, like drinking or pacing.
I think that Jo’s arrest is not only a disruption of Greta and Carson’s bubble (Oz), but also Jess and Lupe’s. As they’ve grown more comfortable and the team has grown closer, some of the walls they have to protect themselves have come down. What happened to Jo is a devastating reminder that it’s not safe for Jess and Lupe to be visibly queer and link themselves together. The blocking in this scene illustrates just how isolated they must feel now.
For example, here’s a screenshot from Episode 6. (I think this is ep 6. Also I’m sorry about the subtitles. I was so focused on getting a good screenshot that I totally did not notice the text until making this post.) Anyway, there’s Jess and Lupe standing together in the corner as they usually do.
Tumblr media
Now here’s a scene from Episode 7. This is where I really credit whoever did the blocking for this shot. The other girls are clumped together similarly closely as they were in the locker room one episode earlier... except Lupe and Jess, who are standing abnormally far apart.
Tumblr media
Are these the same people from the previous episode?? Yes, BUT the environment of the team has changed now that people are reeling over Jo 1) being queer 2) being arrested 3) being traded. In this screen shot, Lupe and Jess - also the only ones obviously wearing pants - are doing everything they can not to draw attention to their friendship, because the team is no longer a safe space for them to be their authentic selves.
They are standing so far apart, there’s room for a whole other person in between them. That’s why I think this is a brilliant blocking decision, because it not only shows the strain that Jess and Lupe are obviously feeling, but it also calls attention to the fact that Jo is missing from this tableau.

I do want to hear about warren's emasculation please tell me more
CERTAINLY! i want to preface this by saying that all of what I'm about to say is just a personal interpretation of a character because I Love to read too much into anything but also. Everything Is There.
To explain more plainly I do think Warren has an extremely conflicted relationship with gender and masculinity. We know he was abused, we know his father was a sexual predator, we don't know the Extent of the abuse but we don't really need to. What we can infer from this is that the first role model he had for masculinity in his childhood was beyond fucked up, and therefore his own view of How A Man Should Act has been distorted. Now obviously he doesn't Want to be like his father, but these things leave their marks and more often than not they don't even scar, they remain open wounds. (I also don't think he's had much time to address this, the timeline regarding his time in prison is foggy at best, but Emily does imply that he ran away from home as soon as he could, so I really don't believe he's had Therapy, y'know.)
Then there's the whole "I wasn't hitting back not because I thought myself better, but because I thought myself weaker" that tells us also another thing regarding his bias as what a Manly Man is: whether it be physicality or character, he doesn't think he fits the right criteria, and we all know what bullies say to their victims, they often hit weak spots. Which leads me to believe that his perception of his own gender is somewhat deformed, warped. He Needs to be a man, because everything tells him he should, but he Doesn't Want to be one, or, let's say, he doesn't want to be the type of man that he's always known. Like, for example, Bryony says Warren told her he "felt emasculated" by the fact that she was the one paying all of their bills, so she let him pay for the broadband, and then he replies: actually I just wanted to get the movie package, which of course could be a lie told because he was embarrassed, but I believe he was genuine in this, and thus I also believe that he was Playing a character. Masculinity itself is highly performative, what with the whole western constructed way of societal norms and toxicity (I'm from Italy, we are the poster children for that), so it could be said that Everyone is playing a character regarding their gender, and that Everyone should address how fucked up that is, but Warren plays a character with clothes that don't fit. He's a man, he doesn't necessarily want to be, he just thinks he should.
Now, this is where my interpretation kind of takes the highway out of canon and becomes more Hypothesis and What Ifs, but I have the "I think of nothing. I simply am not" branded with fire on the folds of my brain, so I spend a considerable amount of time thinking about it. I'm a big fan of voids, and hole theory, and how nothingness itself is an oxymoron (how can Nothing exist? If its defining quality is the lack of something, does Something exist? or is it the lack of nothing that defines Something? Fun stuff) AND I also really like this piece by Audrey Wollen. Of course, Warren's desire for the total annihilation of self is deeply linked with his trauma and his cptsd, his general suicidal tendencies, but also. What If. What if he wants to be nothing because everything he's tried has sucked him dry, if the way he's lived so far was by being chained to the Conforming Way Of How A Man Should Be. It's just a single part of his character, of course, yet I find it extremely fascinating!! Warren wants to be nothing and then somewhere along the lines this changes, I can't wait to see How this is handled in season 3 I am going to pass out now.

What's Past is Prologue
I had never watched any Star Trek before 2017. It wasn't something that seemed like it was for me, it wasn't something that had ever really appealed, even. I wish I could say that I decided to watch Discovery because I wanted to broaden my horizons, or even just out of a sense of general curiosity, to try something a little different - the honest truth is that I'd heard Jason Isaacs had been cast as a captain, and Gersha Phillips (thank you, Gersha) had costumed him in tight blue lycra.
I thought I knew precisely 2 (two) things about Star Trek at this point: the captains were always uncomplicated good guys, and the shows were a fairly sedate, gentle romp. In my naivety, I thought it would be a nice, relaxing way to spend 45 minutes a week, admiring his bottom enjoying a performance by an actor whose talent I greatly admire.
Ahem.
I couldn't have been more wrong. First of all, relaxing and sedate and gentle and uncomplicated it was not. Secondly - it turned out I'd fallen hard for the characters and the whole, huge Trek universe well before Lorca and his tight trousers ever showed up in episode three, and it was a love that lasted long after his unceremonious dumping into the mycelial core.
I realised I was in trouble when I switched my computer background to a Discovery-era tricorder blueprint, but looking back, my descent was a gradual and steady one. I wandered down the lore rabbithole - what was that reference? Who's that pointy eared bastard? Wait wait wait there are different universes??? - and before I knew it, I was completely and utterly hooked. I'd fallen in love with Sonequa Martin-Green's performance, with the slow unfurling of this complicated, brilliant character, and the stories of her warmth and leadership on set. I'd fallen in love with the absurd plotlines, with the gorgeous costumes (thank you, Gersha), with the stunning visuals and design. I'd fallen in love with Star Trek, of all things. I wasn't supposed to fall in love with Star Trek!
I'm still feeling a lot of sadness about the announcement that it's ending, and anger about the way it's been handled - but instead of dwelling too much on that, I suppose I just wanted to share some of the ripples Discovery started for me. It unlocked something in my writing brain after a decade of block, long after I'd given up hope of ever writing again. The openness of the cast helped me to finally feel comfortable in my own queer identity. And most importantly, I've made some incredible, wonderful friends because of it. I know I'm not the only one. The show might be ending, but those ripples will keep going long after the theme tune plays for the final time.
Discovery is a heartfelt, frustrating, glorious tangle of a show, and I'm going to miss it so very much.

i like to think jevil would just make up random rules as he went along with his games, like a kid on the playground saying they have a super-ultra-ultimate-destroyer sword that can get through your shield-that-blocks-everything-forever-and-makes-you-invincible, and spamton never, ever caught on to that, for years and years, just trying to follow all the arbitrary rules jevil created except for when he wasn't looking. and jevil would be like "NUH-UH, NUH-UH! YOU HAVE TO PAT YOUR HEAD AND RUB YOUR TUMMY WHILE YOU RUN, OR IT DOESN'T COUNT!" and spamton would be like "[$€£¢] YOU!" while doing it.

I think I've said in the past that I don't really relate that much to Sam on the show, but the one thing that I do relate to is the experience of being part of a messed up, very tight-knit family. Like on one hand you have a group of people who know each other and understand each other better than everyone, but on the other hand it can be very smothering. Like there is no sense of privacy- people have a sense of ownership over you and think they can do whatever they want to you, which includes your body. And sometimes you don't even know when something wrong is happening to you until you are older because you haven't known any other family. And the emotional labor you have to do is exhausting, like it is never-ending... soooo anyways yeah Sammy should get to do whatever he wants forever and ever <3333 he deserves it mwah

I don't know if you've ever read the poem "Air" by Victoria Adukwei Bulley, but it reminds me a lot of your Demelonzo works. :) Especially the first part :
"Friend, I saw you sitting At the window of yourself high up in the loft watching it all go on without you. I was ice & you were almost shadow I waved like a child on a passing boat. Unsure of whether or not this counts I want us to remember the unreadable air."
Though really the whole poem is beautiful
Friend, that is so incredibly kind of you to say, thank you <3
Looking at it, I definitely get that vibe and it's so lovely, particularly the imagery in this part:
"Friend, I saw you sitting/At the window of yourself/high up in the loft/watching it all go on without you/I was ice & you were almost shadow"
Because A. There's that shadow/shadow dance imagery again, and B. It can apply to either or party depending on the scenario or POV - and the use of the waving child is really just in line with them attempting to connect with one another in the only way they know how - almost a childish, almost helpless relearning of how to trust other people again, to live in the here and now, after having their lives go the way they had. Almost like the two ships passing in the night metaphor, but the poem then reconfigures with an "us", which is almost like...even if it cannot be right now, it will be someday. They are not permanent in passing; the time will come.
(I also had never read the poem before, so thank you x2 since I got introduced to something *very* pretty, and very much up my alley

I have been obsessed with this song lately! It fits them so perfectly.
Hope someone enjoys my first Star Trek inspired artwork, I experimented with a completely different style and I quite like it!

hi! obviously i understand you hold no obligation to educate others if you don't want to, but i had a question i feel like you'd know the answer to. i saw a reddit comment that said: "A more depressing note is that the only brazilian F1 driver, past and current, that doesn't support Bolsonaro isn't even Brazilian by birth." and i wondered if you knew who that was? i am not brazillian but i understand how awful he is and i didn't want to become too invested in someone with bad politics.
I honestly have no idea whom they are referring to. Because if you look it up, out of the brazilian F1 drivers who weren't born in Brazil but hold/held citizanship there's: Gino Bianco and Nano da Silva, both of which have passed away. Then Nelsinho Piquet (crashgate star, born in Germany and doesn't need any comments on my part), and then Pietro Fittipaldi, born in the United States, the only driver currently active around F1.
Pietro not only is a supporter but visited Bolsonaro in January 2021, and took pictures with him, maskless, about a week after the event that came to be known as the "Manaus Oxygen Crisis".
The Manaus Oxygen Crisis started at around 14th of january 2021on which people in Manaus who were hospitalized due to the massive COVID-19 outbreak were dying due to a shortage of oxygen and the very very slow response from the goverment that didn't move to send any help to the state until DAYS after people started dying on mass
Pietro had lunch with Bolsonaro and gave him a helmet as a gift, to say thank you for his goverment giving Pietro's project in F1 about R$ 4.9 million, which is about U$ 1 million.
Enzo, Pietro's brother, also obtained goverment funds for his motorsport career, another R$ 4.5 million reais through "tax waivers" where the goverment gives tax breaks to the companies that sponsor the brothers.
I'll leave here some links further explaining/reporting on the subjects I mentioned, though I couldn't find any arcticles in english explaining the Fittipaldi situation. If you need me to translate anything, let me know.
COVID-19 leaves Amazonas health system saturated, overloaded and struggling
‘Brazil is suffocating’: COVID surge creates severe oxygen crisis
The arduous path for oxygen to reach the sick in one of Brazil’s most remote regions
Bolsonaro hides tax waiver of R$ 9.4 million to sponsor grandchildren of Emerson Fittipaldi
Pietro Fittipaldi visits Bolsonaro after government approves R$9.4 million
Government releases tax incentive of R$ 10 million to Pietro Fittipaldi and Tony Kanaan
If you figure out who they are referring to, please let me know!

i swear to god i regret reblogging that estrolabs post because absolutely no one is focusing on the actual issue, which is that it's a phishing site very clearly run by malicious people and giving them any information on yourself could fuck you over big time
their ashwaganda "estrogen replacement" would be useless at best and extremely dangerous at worst, if it actually existed. however the products on that site almost certainly do not fucking exist and never have, and they have zero intention of actually producing them. the listings for the "supplements" aren't on the site anymore.
when scams like this pop up suddenly, they're not legitimate to even the slightest degree. there was never a real product, they were trying to get your money or your card and contact information either to doxx you, harass you, or literally steal from you. it's a PHISHING scheme, not a "making a shitty product to Literally Kill People" scheme. one of these things is far cheaper and far easier for a layperson to do.
while the information on the function of ashwaganda was definitely useful generally, it was/is not the most present danger of this estrolabs/queerquirk situation and people need to be aware of the actual threat these kinds of sites and situations pose.
as i was writing this estrolabs has been taken down, but queerquirk is still up and still advertising it's fake products and has a contact us page. do not give them your contact information, even to send hate. it is not worth getting phished to epicly own the dumbass behind this scheme. report the site and move on.
