Could I request Ichigo with a short and petite girlfriend that send a grown man flying with a punch?
*so rukia?? 😂*
Ichigo Kurosaki + superpower punch GF
Tumblr media
“Do you think we should get popcorn for everyone?”
“Hmmm….Chad would probably like some.” Ichigo replied after a moment of thought. “Ishida doesn’t it food from ‘a stand’. Something about sanitation requirements? Orihime is gonna need her own because she likes to put furikake and spicy cheese sauce on hers.”
“Where would she get furikake at a movie theater?”
“She brings it in her purse.”
The group was meeting up that afternoon to see a movie and enjoy the AC on this hot summer day. What they were seeing didn’t really matter, just the time spent together.
Coming from different directions, Ichigo and [Y/N] planned to arrive first and claim seats. The theater closer to their neighborhood than anyone else. [Y/N] said that she would just go ahead and buy the tickets and everyone could pay her back, since she got paid this week and it was easiest. But Ichigo knew that she was just doing it to be nice. Not expecting to get paid back if her friends didn’t have it. He loved the generous aspect of her.
“Hey. You kids.” The pair stop, despite their best instincts, and turn around to see some bum wander out of a side street. “Got any change?”
“We don’t. Sorry.” Ichigo replied. Taking [Y/N]’s hand and already starting to walk on.
“Come on maaaan. Help me out. I haven’t eaten in dayssss.”
“Maybe we should help him?” [Y/N] whispered to him, but Ichigo shook his head no. He got a bad vibe and people like this would take off your hand when you offer them a hand out.
“Hey! I’m talking to you!” As bad vibes indicated, the man got angry at being ignored and lunged out to grab [Y/N]’s purse.
“Hey!” Ichigo shouted, prepared to do something. Before he could, however, [Y/N] had his wrist in a death grip and preforming a single handed arm throw back into the alley and into a wall.
“Don’t grab things that don’t belong to you.” [Y/N] scolded the dizzy & disoriented man, who may have had a concussion now. “I need to wash my hands now.”
“I could have taken care of that guy for you.” Ichigo replied as they continued their trip to the theater. As if nothing happened.
“I know. But I may not be able to beat up Hollows, but I can certainly handle some dumb guy. Don’t you remember how we met?”
Ichigo smiled softly back at [Y/N]’s big grin. How could he forget. He fallen head over heels for her when she threw him head over heels at the dojo when they were just kids.
“Come on. Let’s get to the movie before we miss the trailers.”
They arrive and get tickets before [Y/N] went to the bathroom to wash her hands. Ichigo went ahead and paid for everyone’s snacks. Popcorn for Chad and Orihime, one for them to share, and pack of mango jellies for Ishida. He figured if they were prepacked they should be fine, and if he still complained then he wouldn’t get anything and he could have jellies. Win-win.

Reread wdkaly and when ichigo reads the instructions on the embroidery and finds out the flowers are strawberry flowers and orihime is like "I've liked them for a really long time lol" like there's no way he doesn't know that she shares his same feelings and would likley not reject him. I mean, obviously, there's still a lot of complexity in his character dynamics in play. It's just funny to me how he's fought literal death gods, but when it comes to letting her know how he feels, it takes #1 ichihime shipper renji stealth isolating the 2 of them into a conversation for it to happen.
i adore renji but you CANNOT give him the #1 ichihime shipper title, that belongs to chad!!!!
i mean, i know this is not a popular opinion but the great thing about ichihime as a romance is that you can endlessly imagine SO many possibilities about the state of their feelings post-canon and i love doing that, i love toying around with the many many ways they could struggle with their feelings. as for the hints from orihime's side: i think ichigo would constantly be in a loop of getting his hopes up and then kicking himself for getting his hopes up. we've talked this to death on my blog before, but horn of salvation was soooo major for ichigo and orihime because it finally shakes up the status quo between them, and all the build-up of ichigo & orihime's subplot culminates in a mostly satisfying way (with orihime finally being able to feel like his equal, with ichigo finally ASKING someone to have his back for the first time).
but now that ichigo doesnt have the distraction/surface-level excuse of needing to protect her because of her weaker nature, he can finally actually explore the deeper reasons behind why he feels so connected to her. and we know they (+ their friends) spend a lot of time together when they're not doing their shonen stuff, so he's finally got to grapple with how he feels when the stakes are low, when they aren't dealing with such larger-than-life things anymore. right before i got your ask, i was literally about to post something about how the best ichihime fanfics are ones where they're both stubbornly swallowing down their feelings for each other while everyone else around them gets increasingly mad at them for it. i don't think either of them would have ever confessed if one of their friends hadn't pushed them into doing it, and i think it's really sweet that WDKALY chose renji to be that person considering how grateful renji and rukia are to ichigo because he brought them together. they've both completely got his back, and they're both usually the ones who give him a push when he's being young and immature, so it makes sense that they'd kick sense into him for this too. i love them😅

"Well guys, it's 2023 and here's another dolt ranting about pronouns in the lust arc, just like the IH Fail essay that ended up being a fail in and of itself."
No its 2023 and people are deciding to keep ot real with you instead of deluding themselves and changing fhe narrtive to cater to a ship.
Respectfully, lets not speak on a language we dont know shit about, lmao.
Ichigo omits the pronoun when he tells rukia 'i've come to save you' in soul society that's because he was literally speaking to her, had been bickering with her from the previous page and had already told her he was there to rescue her back on the bridge - so he didn't need to specify to her 'who' he'd come to save: this is a typical example of "japanese omitting pronouns because they're obvious"
in the lust arc, ichigo is quite literally unconscious and unaware of his surroundings: in order to make it clear to the readers that ichigo recognized orihime, a pronoun (actually not even, he should have used her damn name like ichigo always did when he thought about rukia in ss) **needed** to be there without it, especially coupled with the fact that he speaks in broken japanese from that moment to the end of his transformation (i.e. he uses a mix of kanji and katakana, the latter of which is only used for foreign words, robots or - in bleach's case - hollows, and usually to signify that the speaker is just muttering sounds and doesn't understand the actual meaning of what they're saying), and the fact that he literally quite literally proceeds to throw orihime off the dome with absolutely no care for her well being, it's damn obvious that he had no idea who was yelling at him, he was only aware of the fact that someone was asking for help and got triggered by the word 'save'
"I mean this is just hilarious to me. Here's Orihime and Ichigo, literally placed together in side by side panels as Ichigo continues to chant about protecting...And ichiruki shippers are like, "hmmm well, it's not super clear who he's talking about because there's no pronoun so...I guess we'll never know 🤷‍♀️."
So being places together in panels side by side means he's referring to her? May I remind u he's just raised from the dead, and orihime is shocked as she processes what's happening. Those panels were to emphasise that. Not only have u attempted to educate me on the Japanese language and failed, you've now tried to say side by side panels somehow equates to the fact that he's referring to her? 💀.
"You think Kubo drew this^ entire page, at such a pivotal moment, to show that Orihime's...wrong? Like some sort of gag? She's just *imagining* that Ichigo rose up for her, but it's not actually true? That's...certainly an interesting way to interpret things lmao."
This was orihimes own perception of the situation. Orihime isn't a fact page, she's her own charecter with her own dialogue and thought. The fact she perceived it that way doenst mean its the case. She didn't imagine anything, it jsut looked that way too her, may I remind you she was the one screaming. She knows she's the person the screams belong too, ichigo doesn't. So of course she's gonna think it's here fault, common sense people.
You also proceeded to bring more asspulls and try and say how the databook confirms its about orihime when it was in third person.
"The readers aren't the ones who bound Ichigo to Orihime's screams (especially not you, anon, since you keep insisting it had nothing to do with her lmao). Kubo did that. That's how he meant for this scene to be interpreted: that Ichigo was bound to Orihime's screams. But you're still here fighting against it for some reason lol."
Did kubo tell u that he meant for the scene to be interpretated this way? Or did some angel come to you in ur dream and tell u that? If thats true, kubo wouldve simply added confirmation that hes talking about orihime by adding pronouns or her name. Instead he doesnt do that and has ichigo propell her away
He was bound to her screams, it's just that he didn't know the screams belonged to her, as long as those screams belonged to someone, he's gonna get up... that's who he is. It could've been anyone else screaming there and he would've stood his ass the fuck up, that's his charecter and what he does. Lmao you think this would go without saying, but the lengths ppl go for shipping is hilarious.
"Ichigo did know she was calling out to him. It was part of his internal monologue, as she's screaming, before he hollowfied. Whether the pronoun is there or not (because again, the pronoun for her doesn't *need* to be there to make it clear who he's talking about when she's clearly the only person screaming, placed directly next to a panel of him rising him up...) he could hear her voice. He could hear her calling him. He ruminated over ORIHIME'S screams and was bound to ONLY that purpose. Only her. "
He could hear her voice, he just didn't know it was her. Just that it was somebody, it's not that hard to grasp. There's nothing wrong with ichigo not knowing it's orihime but since shipping has rotten yalls brains, it has to be about the Princess hime, and not about ichigos own charecter, because everything has to be about orihime, right? (💀).
Your opinion on this probably won't change, that's granted as a deluded shipper. What also won't change, is the fact that this isn't an ichihime moment. U attempted to educate me on the japanese language and failed, I recommend doing more research time. I also reccomend not bothering to reply to things like these if ur arguement is just gonna end with "well ichihime is canon, deal with it" because it makes u look silly to say the least, and has nothing to do with the convo.

Hi Hezu! It’s been a while, Hope you’re doing Well 😊 since the Blaech TYBW Arc is getting Animated👀(more excited to see the Animation), There are Questions I Got to Ask! What would happen if Ichigo Took Rukia instead of Orihime to Face Yhwach? Would it have changed The story that we Currently have or Remain The Same? (To Me, I Think The Main Characters Ichigo and Rukia should Ended The Final Arc As They Are “🖤The Death and Stawberry🍓” Plus They Started The journey and shouldn’t They have finished the Journey Together as Well? I don’t know The Ending in The Manga was Messed up for Me😖) and Also How Would You have Rewritten TYBW Arc? Sorry That There are to many Questions😅😔
Tumblr media
Ah! I almost forgot to Mention, Have you Heard about “Vanitas no Carte”?🤔 it’s Anime About Vampires and More🦋
So the whole thing with Ichigo and Yhwach was already a bit of a mess, what with him stealing Ichigo's powers, the Fullbringers kinda just showing up as a Deus Ex Machina... and the overall rush of the storyline just didn't fit as a finale. I would have completely rewritten BLEACH's final arc so it wouldn't have come down to Ichigo chasing Yhwach through a portal. Anyway, Rukia, despite being more powerful than Orihime, probably wouldn't have made a whole lot of difference in the fight. Her bankai is too dangerous to use on an unpredictable enemy. Her ice powers might have proved more useful than Orihime's powers, but overall I don't think she would have won them the war. She could have very well become an injured damsel in distress too. It is very weird that Renji of all people comes along to the final battle, and not like... ALL of them. Out of everyone, Renji is the one who doesn't belong in the main cast, but they always act like he does. He wronged pretty much every member of Karakura in some way, and he's never made up for it. Rukia spent time in the world of the living and time with the Karakura team  when Renji hasn't. (Even when he did, he spent it with Urahara, who is also a shinigami) So he can't relate to any of them. He may be one of Ichigo's rivals but its just very random for him to come in to assist Ichigo, especially when in the end he barely puts up a fight before Aizen has to interfere. Well for one, to fix the arc, I would have honestly had Yhwach kidnap Ichigo, brainwash him, and train him as a proper Quincy, because Uryu is really useless here. I feel like Uryu, once he realizes Ichigo has been captured and Ichigo is a QUINCY, Uryu would finally have a purpose and kick it into high gear to try and help not only himself but also Ichigo. He's gotta drop his secret agent nonsense with Yhwach to try and get Ichigo out unscathed, which involves needing the help of the other members of Karakura. I’d fix Bazz B and Jugram’s friendship. Maybe have Jugram turn against Yhwach for the sake of Bazz B in the end. (I’d fix a lot of other Quincy characters too, to make them more likable and relatable because honestly I don’t care about any of them) There wouldn't be zombies in the way they were introduced. X-axis guy would never turn into giant mitosis birds because what the fucking hell was that I'd also have more flashbacks explaining the soul king, on top of Yhwach's actual overall plans. Aizen escapes. He never gets back in that chair. At some point maybe ichigos powers go haywire because yhwach is controlling his Quincy side and that clashes with his hollow. Any excuse to see more zangetsu. Maybe Quincy Zangetsu gives up because he knows its inevitable that Yhwach will win, but Ichigo and Hollow Zangetsu manage to convince him. Ichigo gets a badass complete bankai, a perfect fusion of ALL his powers that Yhwach never foresaw, and destroys the man. (See the Bleach Brave Souls all powerful version of Ichigo for reference) Ichigo becomes Soul King, or maybe even Aizen becomes the Soul King. Whoever becomes the next Soul King is placed in Stasis, unable to move or speak……. Or maybe that whole thing is tossed out and they can freely walk around the Zero Squad Barracks. If Ichigo doesn’t become Soul King, then he at the very least would no longer be allowed to return to the human world and he’d probably become a captain, resparking the Shiba family Noble line.
Side note but I’d explain what on Earth was going on with Komamura’s family history, I’d probably kill Toushiro or make him ill (his life was cut in half and he becomes an adult for some really weird reason when he goes bankai… like I know hes the most popular BLEACH character in Japan but he’s been through way too much to come out unscathed like that) Nemu and Mayuri would have never had that creepy Stockholm syndrome chapter sequence. Absolutely kill off Mayuri. Maybe Nemu could take over as the new squad captain in his place. Ichigo’s friends’ tickets would actually be usable and have meaning despite the horrible timing they received them. Orihime and/or Hachigen fix Captain Kyouraku’s eye (because wtf why is that not fixed yet. Like yeah , eye patches are cool but sir there’s people who can fix that for you. Right there. Even Nemu could probably make one for you. Fix it.) Neliel and Grimmjow would have gotten a fight scene against some powerful Quincy, maybe see some Segunda Etapa forms from them. Def a lot more bankais from other characters, especially Hisagi, whose bankai was hinted at, but never received until the novel.
And probably so much more. I would have rewritten the entire Fullbring arc as well. Given Orihime and Chad proper upgrades. I would have never separated the gang as much as Kubo has the past decade... There’s just so much to fix.  ~~~
I've heard of Vanitas no Carte and I've seen some episodes. It looks really pretty and it seems like something I could get into. The main character sorta reminds me of Lelouch. Unfortunately, the anime has a major tonal dissonance problem. One moment it's very serious or scary, and the next the characters have a complete 180 comedic reaction, and it seems to happen constantly to the point where I'm taken out of the story because of it. And I'm also confused on the direction of it. It seems to tease a romantic subtext with the main characters, Vanitas and Noe, but they both actually have girlfriends??? That they are super romantically involved with? But the girls don't have as much screen time or an overarching plot that truly relates to main characters' overall story? I mean I haven't watched the full thing, so maybe I'm missing something, but we spend a good chunk of time focusing on those relationships instead of the plot at hand and I don’t understand what their purpose in the story is. So I could check it out, but I think it won’t be something I’ll be able to stick to.

So the final arc for black and blue will be the zanpakuto rebellion? I can understand why you may go for it- among the filler arcs it does seem to be the most popular and well-liked (I LOVED all the zanpakuto designs myself) but I wonder why include it at all? Perhaps so that two certain zanpakutos that no realizes are zanpakutos will get a chance for a big reveal since tybw won't be happening?
(It's cool if you can't directly answer, spoilers and all that jazz.)
On the less spoilery side of things, will you be addressing the forms the zanpakuto take? Like with zabimaru, instead of the monkey with the snake tail we got chimpette and snakey. I always assumed that zanpakuto could assume more than one form or perhaps those two could symbolize the form of renji's true bankai (like we learned from kubo that yachiru as we know her is supposed to be kenpachi's bankai, kind of like tensa zangetsu- in shikai she's an adult woman). And I always thought that sogyo no kotowari and haineko had animal forms to go with their human forms.
On the humorous side of things, I always thought retroactively that it would've been hilarious if old man zangetsu got brought out and someone- unohana or sasakibe- saw him and were like, "Why is kurosaki's zanpakuto spirit that quincy asshole yamamoto killed a thousand years ago?!"
Because frankly, I wanted a relatively low-stake wind down from the world-ending threat that was Aizen. And I've got a cute image in my head of little Sogyo no Kotowari barging into Kaien's office, begging Kaien to play with them and complaining about how much they missed him.
Then Kaien siccing them on his Hollow instead. "Sorry guys, I'd love to but I have work to do, I don't have time today... **points to Hollow Kaien lounging about** he's free though." "Yay! White Kaien, play with us! Lets play kido tag together!" "W-Wait what?! Kaien I'll kill you!" "Have fun; bring them back before naptime~!"
That won't happen, that's just a scene I thought up of while doing a bleach re-watch in prep for TYBW anime's return and I realised it'd be a great way to re-charge from the world ending catastrophe. Muramasa aside, there weren't a lot of stakes. It was a fun distraction more than anything else; plus the opportunity for humorous Zanpakutou interactions.
Given who Kaien is, I easily imagine Nejibana relentless trolling the living daylights out of Rukia and Ichigo. Hell, I doubt even Kaien would be safe from her. He has siblings ya know, and Nejibana was there every step of the way in the living world - I wonder how Kukaku would react to the Jellyfish story in particular. ;)
I think Zanpakutou having one or two separate forms is highly dependent on the wielder. Just like the Zanpakutou spirit itself is shaped by the soul it belongs to. Hell, Hisagi mentioned that his Zanpakutou appeared to him in various different elemental forms in CFYOW before appearing as a shadow-clad humanoid to have that 'How to Bankai' talk.
Since this isn't spoilers, I'll confirm Nejibana has two. Her humanoid form and a sea wyvern.
Given how I intend to write BB, I don't think it'll be the old man brought out.... but, we'll jump off that bridge when we come to it.
It might turn out I don't do the Zanpakutou rebellion at all and just finish with the Lost Agent arc. Won't know for sure until I write it.

~ This is the last TBTP What If? I send you, I swear: Option a) What if Ginrei had been sent in place of Love? Option b) What if Sojun had been sent in place of Lisa? Option c) What if both?
I have stated before that I am just “no thoughts, head empty” when it comes to the Vizard, generally. Like, I like them just fine, I just don’t have anything interesting to say about them.
On the other hand, I have always wanted to write a Soujun story and I’ve never come up with a good hook. The thing I like about option b is that, because Soujun canonically died not super long after the TBTP arc, from Soul Society’s POV, this possibility would be pretty much exactly as in canon up until basically the Fake Karakura Town arc.
Well. Unless the most face-blind teen in Karakura manages to put two and two together.
Did Polynya stay between 500 and 1000 words?: 3049. I will be in the dumpster if you need me.

“Renji! Hey! Renji!”
The lump of blankets groaned and shifted slightly.
Ichigo looked around for something to poke him with, but Renji was bunking in Urahara’s storage room, and Ichigo really didn't want to touch anything. There was Zabimaru, but it seemed deeply disrespectful to prod a man with his own zanpakutou. He resorted to nudging what he guessed was Renji’s shoulder with his foot.
“Renji, it’s only 9pm. Why are you asleep already? Are you someone’s grandpa?”
The tip of Renji’s nose emerged from the blankets. “Train hard, sleep hard. I did Hikotsu Taihou twelve times today. Leave me alo--Ichigo?” The a pair of squinty eyes joined the nose. “‘Zat you? Where you been, man?”
“It doesn’t matter,” Ichigo replied. “Where’s Rukia? She wasn’t at my house.”
Renji started to retreat back under his covers. “‘Where’s Rukia?’ ‘Renji, I can’t find Rukia.’ Is that all the good I am to you? What makes you think I even know where Rukia is?”
“Do you know where Rukia is?”
“Well, yes, she took Inoue back to Soul Society.”
Ichigo felt like a bucket of cold water had been dumped on his head. Inoue had left the entire plane, and he’d been so busy training, he hadn’t even noticed. His stomach knotted. His training was important, and obviously, Inoue was in good hands, but still... “For…for Inoue’s protection?” he stammered, immediately hoping that Renji wasn’t awake enough to notice how pathetic he sounded.
Renji was too busy yawning, his already long face stretching out to comic proportions. “Naw,” he said, when he had gotten his jaw back where it belonged. “They went so her and Rukia could punch each other in the face. There aren’t that many safe training areas here in Karakura, and Chad and I are already using the training buttes.”
“I honestly cannot tell if you’re kidding or not, but I am going to take you at your word that Rukia is not available.” Ichigo took a deep breath and hoped against hope that Renji didn’t sleep in the nude. He reached down and, in a move his old man would have been proud of, whipped off Renji’s blanket and hurled it across the room. “Get up. You’ll have to do, instead.”
---
Ten minutes later, the two of them set out into the night. Renji was scowling, his hands shoved deep in the pockets of his leather jacket.
Ichigo jerked his chin at the big grump. “I can’t believe you sleep with your hair in a braid.”
“You can fuck right off, it prevents breakage and locks in moisture. You gonna tell me where we’re going, now?”
“The all-night coffee shop down the street.” Ichigo sucked his teeth. “Say, Renji… you know how sometimes you’re a pretty chill dude who does what he knows what’s right in his heart, and other times, you’re a huge, bull-headed shill for the Gotei?”
Renji’s eyebrows furrowed with suspicion. “Yeah, what of it?”
“This is one of those times I need you to be the first one. There’s someone I want you to meet.”
“You know I can’t make promises like that.”
“Dude, you’re staying with a guy who was banished from Soul Society for unforgivable crimes.”
“Believe me, no one hates that fact more than me. Besides, the higher-ups know about him, they’re just pretending they don’t.”
“I’m only bringing you because Rukia isn’t available. I tell you, Rukia would be copacetic with this.”
“Rukia doesn’t have to write official mission reports and then give them to her brother to sign.”
“I’m almost positive that Byakuya would let this slide, too.”
Renji stopped dead in his stride. “Who are we going to see, Ichigo?”
“You’ll see,” Ichigo replied, as he closed his eyes and kept walking.
“No promises!”
Ichigo knew Renji well enough though, to recognize that he had what he needed in that shouty defensiveness. Rukia sometimes insisted on extracting ceremonial promises from the man, and Ichigo often wondered if she realized how unnecessary it was. “I’m just trusting you to be a bro, then.”
There was a heavy sigh, and then some heavier footsteps as Renji trotted to catch up again.
The coffee shop was painfully dated, and not in a cool retro way. Isshin hung out there occasionally, for the purposes of checking in with some of his older patients who didn’t always come by the clinic when something was bothering them. The seats were big banquettes covered in old, cracked red vinyl. The smell of coffee only took the edge off the cloying undertone of cigarette smoke.
Ichigo had a flash of misgiving at having left a person from Soul Society out of his sight for an entire fifteen minutes, even though, strictly speaking, he was the one who wasn’t supposed to leave the Vizards’ warehouse hideout without a chaperone. Fortunately, the chaperone in question was exactly where Ichigo had left him, although he had since obtained a cup of coffee and a large slice of sweet potato pie.
“You’re back!” he said cheerfully as Ichigo and Renji slid into the seat across from him.
“So…” Ichigo said slowly. “The person I wanted you to meet wasn’t available. This guy’ll have to do.” He jerked his head to the left. “This is Renji. He’s Byakuya’s vice-captain.” Ichigo paused. “Renji, this is Soujun. He’s one of the people I’m training with. He’s… um…well…”
A strangled choking noise was coming out of Renji. “You’re…you’re Kuchiki Soujun. You disappeared a hundred years ago.”
“How did you know?” Ichigo asked, surprised. Soujun looked mildly embarrassed, his cheeks coloring slightly.
“Dumbass, look at him! All Kuchiki look like that!” Renji’s face suddenly paled. “Ichigo, you know he’s not just…any…Kuchiki, right?”
“Well, yeah, ‘cause he told me.” Ichigo hadn’t actually expected Renji to know Byakuya’s dad by name, but on the other hand, he’d always been of the impression that Renji slept with a huge scrapbook of Byakuya’s stat sheets and press-clippings under his pillow. Furthermore, out of all the Vizard, Soujun was by far the most normal looking, with his floppy haircut and his math teacher sweaters and his wire-rimmed glasses. He looked like a neighbor you’d see buying bok choy at the supermarket or waving to you on the way home from school as he pruned his boxwoods. Ichigo had seen swap between that snarling samurai-faceplate of a mask away and his doe-eyed, kindly dad-face a dozen times already, and he still had trouble believing that a Hollow lurked beneath the surface of Soujun’s soul.
“Hello there, gentlemen.” An elderly waitress with a nasally voice greeted them. “Can I get you anything?”
“Coffee,” Ichigo replied.
“Coffee,” Renji seconded.
“Since when do you drink coffee?” Ichigo demanded.
“Chad turned me onto it!”
“You sure you want to drink it this late at night, Grandpa?”
“You woke me up, and it helps me think, so shut it.”
“Bring them each some of this pie,” Soujun added. “It’s got really wonderful flavor! I think it’s the nutmeg.”
“Thanks, sweetie!” The waitress gave Soujun an all-too-saucy wink that made Ichigo shudder deep in his soul. “Be right back.”
Ichigo briefly considered if they ought to be more circumspect about their discussion topic, but he figured that ancient all-night diner waitresses must hear all manner of crazy stuff and probably believed almost none of it.
Soujun was squinting curiously at Renji. “Which…which branch are you from? You aren’t… you aren’t related to Kuchiki Kouga, are you? My sister was sent away so shortly after his death… oh… oh no…”
“I am not related to you at all, sir!” Renji sputtered, waving his hands frantically. “100% Rukon-stock, me!”
Soujun’s face screwed up in confusion. “You…must have married in, then?”
A loud snort escaped through Ichigo’s nose, and Renji stomped on his foot under the table. A stony cast had come over Renji’s face that took Ichigo strangely back to the second time they fought each other.
“I’m not connected to the family at all. I realize that’s unusual, and if you’re pissed off about it, you’re not alone.”
Soujun blinked, confused. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything by it! I just…” He sighed.
“You’re such an ass,” Ichigo kicked Renji in the ankle. Unfortunately, Renji was wearing leather boots, and Ichigo’s toes took the worst of it. “He just wanted to know how Byakuya is doing and I didn’t know anything beyond the basics. He’s a super nice guy, so get outta here with that chip on your shoulder.”
Soujun waved his hands, an exact mirror of Renji thirty seconds before. “No, no, Ichigo! I can only imagine how my family reacted, and it would be very natural to assume I would have similar feelings!” He sighed and then carefully arranged his face back into his usual cheerful smile. It would have been mildly creepy if Ichigo hadn’t seen Rukia do the same thing a dozen times. There was probably a whole chapter on it in the Kuchiki Textbook. “There’s no Heir, is there, Lieutenant?”
“No,” Renji replied frankly. “Captain Kuchiki was married briefly, but Lady Hisana passed away before they had children.”
Soujun’s face fell. “He’s alone, then. Ichigo said that Byakuya is clan head, so I assume my father has passed.”
“Well, he’s got Rukia!” Renji defended. “Lady Hisana’s sister. He adopted her.”
“She’s the one I wanted you to meet, but she had to go back to Soul Society,” Ichigo clarified.
“And Captain Kuchiki Emeritus is still kicking around! He retired and lives up North Rukongai way. My impression was he did that to show how much confidence he had in Captain Kuchiki, y’know, when he turned over the reins.”
“Oh!” A strange look came over Soujun’s face. If there was something he was going to say, though, he held it, as pie and coffee arrived, including a refill for Soujun.
Renji played with his fork as he watched the waitress depart again, then turned back to Soujun. “Look, I don’t want to be rude here, but I gotta ask… where have you been, Lieutenant Kuchiki? It’s been, what, a century?” His nostrils flared briefly. “Don’t mean to be pushy, but Soul Society’s got a lot of enemies right now and you’re asking me to speak freely about a man I’m duty-bound to protect.”
Ichigo watched both of them as he chewed his pie slowly. The fact was, all of the Vizard had been maddeningly noncommittal about what their stake was in the coming conflict. It actually hadn’t occurred to him that Soujun had been a lieutenant, but he supposed it made sense, being Byakuya’s dad and all.
Soujun took a long sip of his coffee and very carefully put his cup back down again, turning it with his fingertips until the handle pointed exactly to the right. “I’m sorry, I never caught your family name.”
“It’s Abarai.”
“Lieutenant Abarai. It’s your title now, not mine. And as someone who once held that title, not to mention the father of the man in question, I appreciate your circumspection. May I ask…what do you know about my disappearance?”
Renji took a bite of pie. “This is good pie.”
Soujun beamed. “I told you!”
Renji took a deep breath. “You know how Soul Society is,” he said slowly. “It likes to forget. It especially likes to forget the things it isn’t proud of. You were ‘lost.’ That’s what people say. After twenty years, they fill out a death certificate and close your file, but people still say ‘lost.’ Lotta vice-captains get lost. It’s a shit job, but Im sure you know that.”
Soujun gave a soft snort through his nose.
Renji pretended to be engrossed in dumping a rather upsetting quantity of sugar into his coffee. “But if you know who to ask, there are always people in Soul Society who remember.”
Soujun narrowed his eyes while Renji tasted his coffee, and then proceeded to add even more sugar to it.
“So while it doesn’t get talked about too much, I happen to know you didn’t get lost by yourself. I also happen to know that some important people got banished not long after, which mighta been warranted or it might be some classic Soul Society scapegoating, who’s to say?”
A chill ran down Ichigo’s spine. Was Renji talking about Urahara and Yoruichi? None of the Vizard had ever mentioned them, but it suddenly defied belief that they wouldn’t know about one another. Then again, Soul Society probably banished a lot of people.
Also, since when did Renji know things? Ichigo had expected him to be at least as confused as Ichigo himself had been upon meeting the Vizard. He sure did hope Renji was gonna stick to that chill bro thing.
“But you don’t know what happened to us.”
“My understanding,” Renji replied, while vigorously stabbing off an over-large bite of pie, “is that information was restricted to the captain level.”
Soujun gave off a rueful laugh. “Ah! So my father knows. Perfect.”
“Would you come back if you could?” Renji asked, and there was a weight to the question that Ichigo hadn’t expected.
“Yes,” Soujun replied instantly. “I would anyway. I can’t speak for the others.”
Renji tipped his head to one side, as if he were talking to Ichigo. “Hollows are nasty creatures. Sometimes they can fuck you up without killing you. All shinigami understand this. A shinigami would rather face a noble death than become the thing we hunt.” Renji shrugged. “In theory. In practice, one of the reasons so many people get ‘lost’ is ‘cause it’s a lot nicer than saying we had to hunt ‘em down as a monster.”
“We’re not monsters,” Soujun said stiffly. “We pose no danger to innocent souls.”
“Why not report back, then?”
“That wasn’t the case at first. We’ve got a handle on it now. But…well, historically, the leaders of Soul Society have been much less willing to listen to reason than you, Lieutenant. In classic Soul Society jurisprudence, you get declared dead after twenty years missing, but an execution order is good until it’s rescinded. Furthermore, there’s…some business that we need to take care of. But when that’s done…well, some of us would like to try. To come back. I guess…what I really want to know is…” He squeezed his hands into fists. “Byakuya always liked things to be clear-cut. He always wanted to do what was right, he always wanted to follow the rules. I just want to know if he would want to see me again.” He sighed. “Or if he would rather I just stayed lost.”
Ichigo chewed the inside of his cheek, wondering what he would say, if he were the one who had to answer this question.
“He still likes his rules, for sure,” Renji said airly, scraping the last of his pie from his plate. “But he knows people are more important. At least the people he cares about.” He ate the crumbs off his fork. “Which doesn’t add up to very many people, to be honest, but I’m absolutely sure you’re one of ‘em.”
Soujun’s eyes had gone very soft and very misty.
Renji jerked his chin at Ichigo, and in the exact same gruff tone of voice that Rukia used when she felt things were starting to go sappy, grunted “Oi, Ichigo, you gonna eat that pie? I’ll take it if you don’t want it.”
Ichigo realized suddenly that he hadn’t even touched his. “Try it and you’ll pull back a stump,” he snapped.
“I’ll buy you more pie,” Soujun promised Renji.
---
A short time later, Ichigo and Renji stood in front of the diner while Soujun settled the bill.
“Thanks for trusting me on this,” Ichigo mumbled. “I understand how you’re putting your neck out.”
Renji squinted up at the stars. His breath was visible in the cold air. “I got a lot of plausible deniability on this one. So I ran into some guy in the Living World who’s got the same nose as my captain. How was I t’know? This is what the Gotei gets for pretendin’ people are dead and tryin’ to forget them away.” He was thoughtful for a moment. “By the way, you can tell Captain Outoribashi that his old lieutenant still misses him and rails about his disappearance to her son and his shithead friends when she’s had too much to drink.”
“Captain?” Ichigo echoed.
Renji looked back down at Ichigo, cocking an eyebrow. “Pay attention to what’s around you, kid.”
Ichigo suddenly wanted to tell Renji everything, to ask for his advice. Renji had just extended an enormous amount of trust to him, and he didn’t even know what the Vizard were, what they were capable of. “You weren’t lying, were you? I mean…you really don’t know what happened to Soujun and the others. It’s not just--”
“Did I say I didn’t know?” Renji interrupted. “Think about the time you fought my captain, Ichigo. Think real hard about it.”
Realization crashed into Ichigo like a Rukongai boar. Byakuya had seen him turn into a Hollow. The man had barely reacted to it, which Ichigo hadn’t thought much about, because he was busy trying not to be a Hollow at the time, but looking back on it, it wasn’t a non-reaction, it was a controlled reaction. Which was pretty in-character for Byakuya, sure, but you’d think that most Gotei captains would at least be a little surprised by the idea of a shinigami who could pull out a mask. And…and Rukia had known about his Hollow, although she’d never said how. Renji said the captains at the time had been told the truth…and Byakuya’s grandfather had been a captain…
Ichigo’s eyes darted back to Renji, who was just watching him patiently. “Byakuya knew?”
“He didn’t know, but can recognize a trail when he sees one. Geez, dummy, do you really think I would be staying at Urahara’s if I wasn’t under Captain’s private orders to try to get some info outta that guy?”
Ichigo realized he was making the face of a landed fish.
“Speakin’ of which, I’m not a huge fan of this training you’re up to, but I’m trusting you that you think it’s necessary. If you can bust out again, though, come see me.” A smug smile crept across his face. “I will be at Chad’s.”

SO I finally finished the Bleach and I’m on this Ichigo/Rukia roll. I actually really love how the anime ended, it was the best that they could do with this “non-cannon couple” (written, of course) but the anime made it almost extremely apparent that it was Ichigo and Rukia end-game, even without the kiss to show for it. I view them as a couple very much like Sasuke and Sakura, where understanding one another on a completely personal level is all the show they need to let you know that they love each other. With that said, I’m writing a little something for IchiRuki rn that goes between episodes 165-166. Honestly, there is so much open for interpretation with how much they didn’t show us from these episodes, and so much that Rukia shows with just her heavy emotions she has for Ichigo. Look forward to it, I hope. It’s going to be really sweet, and my perfect little ending to the anime :3

Snippets and Drabbles of the Future Bleach Fanfic
Summary: For Bleach month this August, I'm making a compilation! Some of these will be so fluffy they will probably give you cavities, others will break your heart, but the main thing is that there is no future where the Sun can exist without the Moon.

Casual Friday Hitsugaya
One of the letters we got asked for that Alphabet Ask Meme was about favorite relationships in Bleach, but after spending a full textbrick listing my top 90 favorite Bleach relationships it felt excessive to elaborate within the meme. But since one of my other ask meme answers was about wanting to see more Hitsugaya on my dash, lol, I should try to be the change I wish to see in the world. So...
Hinamori and Hitsugaya (Vol. 1)!
The first time we see them together, Hitsugaya is the third captain to mysteriously appear and comment on Renji’s state of dishabille post-Ichigo. Because like, at this point we know two things about Hinamori:
very fond of her captain
willing to start a shouting match with Byakuya to defend her friend Renji’s honor
We don’t really know that much about Hitsugaya. Mostly, that Renji thinks it would be a pain to serve under him. (Bear in mind Renji’s own captain, the one that he agreed to serve under, showed up to this scene purely to insinuate that Renji was honorless dirt and deserved prison, and like, I can’t imagine Renji would have expected Byakuya to respond differently.)
But in contrast to Byakuya, the first sustained Hitsugaya appearance we get is actually Casual Friday Hitsugaya:
Tumblr media
Not that the way Hitsugaya regularly talks tends to be hyperformal, especially since he’s usually interacting with subordinates. Most of the time, he talks like any shounen anime boy. But to me this first intro feels like, REAL casual lol. The guy is elongating vowels and dropping syllables and casual katakana-ing all over the place. This is "Ichigo and Rukia have a rambunctious comedic aside" casual.
I love Casual Friday Hitsugaya deeply, as a general entity. But the reason I bring him up here is because this is the first time we see Hitsugaya and Hinamori interacting, and to me, it instantly lets us know that they have a very close relationship. They’re not just some rubbernecking captain and someone else’s friend. There’s more here.
Tragically, I have not documented every time Hitsugaya has ever said anything (...yet), but Casual Friday Hitsugaya seems pretty rare. We see him here, when he’s talking to Hinamori in confidence. The other two times that come to mind are when he’s talking to Matsumoto in confidence and intentionally trying to keep things light (after Ichimaru and Hinamori cross blades), and also once when he’s alone and just talking to himself (about Matsumoto). The Advance Team arc was basically Aloha Shirt Week for the Gotei 13, but even then Hitsugaya did not call on Casual Friday Hitsugaya. Three months of hell adjacent and the whole time his register of language pretty much stayed between "typical shounen anime boy informal" and "slightly more distant/authoritative."
Casual Friday Hitsugaya is private, and he really only belongs to two people—Hinamori and Matsumoto. An entire register of language preserved for special occasions--that just warms me. It’s not Hitsugaya’s the only one who ever gets that casual, or that it’s like, innately a big deal—but the facts that 1) this is how we MEET him, almost in diametric contrast to how we more regularly see him, and 2) he seems to have a really clear, regimented idea of how he’s going to be, in what register he is going to exist, with no mixed-use middles, is something I get a lot of mileage out of.
Something else that stands out to me about that first convo between the two of them is that Hitsugaya calls Aizen "Aizen no yatsu," to Hinamori’s face, which LOL. HITSUGAYA. Rude??
Tumblr media
I’m honestly not sure what to do with this! Like, he’s rude to Renji, too, and while that’s also not entirely called for, Renji’s not a captain and he IS on the ground, and the tone of the conversation at that point is fairly playful. Talking about Aizen, the tone of the conversation has already shifted, yet the address remains pretty dang casual.
“Aizen no yatsu” doesn’t fit Hitsugaya and Aizen’s actual relationship, and he knows this, and Hinamori knows this, so it stands out to me. The way I know this phrase to be used is like, bros referring crudely to their bros (Keigo refers to Ichigo as "Ichigo no yatsu" at some point—I don’t remember why, but it was basically like, "gdi, Ichigo. THIS GUY!!!") or like, a disdainful way to refer to just some guy. Neither of those orientations seems to describe them.
I mean, outside of Hitsugaya lurking in the background of Aizen and Ichimaru’s Stage Whispers, I think we only see them interact once outside of the Soul Society arc. But it’s in the winter fireworks flashback that serves as dramatic contrast to the next chapter, where Aizen stabs Hinamori:
Tumblr media
No "Aizen no yatsu" here. Per his extremely consistent usual, Hitsugaya just refers to everyone by their family name, no honorific, though Hinamori objects to this by telling Hitsugaya-kun that it’s Aizen-taichou. And of course Hitsugaya points out that then it’s also Hitsugaya-taichou.
My co-blogger and I have more work to do in sussing out which captains "taichou" each other, which don’t, and when, but to Hitsugaya’s credit here it doesn’t seem overwhelmingly common to address equal-rank shinigami by title. It might depend on the context--we were def not paying enough attention during our marathon rewatch, hahaha--but if it’s context-based, "after-hours rooftop rendezvous" would not be one.
(Brief aside to this aside, but Byakuya will "Hitsugaya-taichou" with some regularity, except in DiamondDust Rebellion after Yamamoto decrees that Hitsugaya is no longer a captain and should be executed. Byakuya did not seem overly committed to the actual carrying out of the order, but by GOD will he take the business of titles/address Extremely Literally.)
Anyway, as a man who was literally sitting next to Hinamori for this entire conversation about honorifics, Aizen’s immediately like, "Happy birthday, Hitsugaya-kun!"
Tumblr media
Which, in the fullness of who Aizen ultimately reveals himself to be, maybe it’s secretly a dig. But birthday wishes are birthday wishes, and Aizen knew Hitsugaya as a student, and even if technically in Soul Society rank supercedes age/seniority, Aizen is Megane Dad right now. I think it’s meant to come across as kindly. (My "take canon and run" interpretation is that he’s copying Hinamori’s term of address, because they share! a profound bond! and her friends! are his friends! so he will call them what she does!)
This is all to say, Hitsugaya and Aizen aren’t strangers to each other and have at that point probably interacted positively with each other more often than Soul Society’s national average.
I think the "Aizen no yatsu" has more to do with Hinamori than Aizen, especially since one of the handful of things we know about Hinamori at this point is her devotion to her captain. It’s to get her attention, for one, and also to stay in that casual register even after the subject matter has ceased to be casual--to emphasize that he’s offering this warning as Hinamori’s close friend, rather than a captain.

i didn’t watch bleach fully, so i actually hated renji bc the streets were saying him and rukia get together in the manga. ☹️ i was a die hard rukia-ichigo stan.
but now, going back and seeing him??? y’know the running joke of “gingers belong to black women” renji is absolutely one of those men.

[Orihime prompts] Even though it's pretty unpolished, I'm really fascinated with the Bleach Pilot chapter (if you haven't read it, you can find it online with minimal googling). It ends with Rukia revealing to Orihime that her homeward rights to Soul Society have been revoked because of her bad behavior and asking Orihime not to tell Ichigo "when she sees him." I often think about how it would have continued. Is Rukia able to get Orihime to Soul Society somehow(her ticket was ripped up?) or do they have to hang around Karakura together as ghost bums? How long do they actually manage to keep Ichigo in the dark? Does Orihime get powers? Will the Law eventually catch up with Rukia, and what role is Orihime going to play in all this? There are so many possibilities, it's just fun to think about, and I bet your ideas are better than mine. Do you think we could get a small dispatch from an AU Where Orihime Dies at the Beginning?
I was going to go for a fic but then I figured a meta would probably suit this ask better because I have a lot of random, loosely-related thoughts about it.
You know, the Bleach Pilot is pretty grim compared to Bleach(tm)—especially with the whole part about Orihime's dad ripping her ticket in two and denying her a chance to the afterlife (what a douche). My guess is that the story was being set up in a way where they obviously do a poor job at hiding it from Ichigo, and then Ichigo and Orihime would have to find an alternative way to enter Soul Society to a) rescue a freshly-arrested Rukia and b) send Orihime back to the afterlife.
However. Let's dial back a bit and Speculate.
Orihime’s powers were at one point completely different to what they are now, there was one version in which she would sprout horns and a tail.
I mean if you're a niche Orihime lore collector like me then you'd know that Kubo originally intended to give Orihime horns and a tail, which makes me go, "What if Orihime Hollow-fied?"
Stay with me here. The way the Pilot sets up the story is that a Hollow is either a Plus that got a) eaten or b) corrupted by staying too long, right? Given the way Orihime's ticket got torn in two, I think it would be cool if nature just took its course and Orihime turned into a Hollow. The catch here would be that Orihime being Orihime, she would actually be able to handle Hollowfication the way Vizards do (AKA with restraint and a conscience) and in-Pilot-universe, that's never happened before so now you'd have Ichigo and Rukia grappling with what happens when a soul is neither-here-nor-there. Funnily enough, I thought back to Loly and Menoly calling Orihime a monster when I was thinking about this and that would make for a perfect conflict, wouldn't it? A soul that doesn't belong with other souls, a Hollow that doesn't belong with other Hollows. Maybe the only real place she feels like she belongs is by Ichigo's side (aww), so she chooses to help him when Rukia inevitably gets arrested for the crime of being short transferring her powers. Orihime and Ichigo would have to find an alternative way to Soul Society so they can rescue Rukia (and they do) but now Soul Society won't take Orihime so she returns to the World of the Living. Maybe Ichigo is just your average cookie-cutter protagonist shinigami and Orihime is the one with weird demonic powers. Maybe, eventually, the Arrancar come to claim her and Orihime thinks, "Okay maybe I should go with them, Hueco Mundo must be my home after all" but then they start eating brains and doing weird organ puppetry and she's like, "Oh. Not my vibe."
Powers
I think Orihime should be allowed to shoot ceros.

Request by @strangeinternetwasteland : giving Renji a special birthday "surprise"
You got it bby. 👏 I hope you enjoy.
You Troublesome Girl || {NSFW} Renji x fem!Reader
Tumblr media
Warnings: oral sex, smut, 18+ content, blowjobs, dirty talk, public sex
Word Count: 900
It was rare that Renji was able to come and see you in the human world. And this was his birthday trip that he had been allowed to have. Usually you had to go back to the Sereitei to see him. So when you had the chance to take him out for the night you were going to take it.
As Renji arrived at your place you nearly jumped him. You hated how long it had been since you had been able to see this crimson haired hunk. His laugh rang through your apartment as he caught you in the air. “I missed you too, my love.”
You planted kisses all over his face and spoke back to him. “I have so much planned for you. I got everyone together so go and change into the clothes I left you on the bed.”
Renji knew that he should have expected you to have planned something, but he had been partly hoping that you could have a nice night in. He quickly changed and met you back in the kitchen, watching you as your mouth dropped open, drool nearly coming out of it.
He walked closer to you and touched the bottom of your chin, closing your mouth for you. Another laugh rang through the apartment and you wanted to melt where you stood. His laugh had always brought you to life when you were in the worst of moods.
You grabbed his hand and led him toward the door. The busy streets of the city were just outside your door, the night life was something that you never had to go far to find.
As you led him to a line of people, familiar faces began to call for him. “Happy birthday, Renji!”
Renji smiled as he looked up to meet the eyes of Orihime and Ichigo. Uryu, Chad, and Rukia all popped up from behind them. It really was the entire gang. As much as he was hating having to leave the house before, he was beginning to like it now.
Entering the club was always a shock for him. It was never like this in the soul society. Night clubs just weren’t a thing there. Sure, things could get rowdy at the guard houses, but never anything to this extent.
You grabbed his hand and led him to the bar, grabbing you both a drink before hitting the dance floor.
Renji might not have ever been taught how to dance, but once you showed him the basics he was a natural. Your bodies moved together and you leaned into him, taking in the moment as you swayed with your best friend.
You reached your arm behind yourself and wrapped it into Renji’s hair, trying your hardest to get him to take his hair tie out. You had always loved his hair when it was down the most. He knew exactly what you were doing so he kissed the side of your head lightly and took his hair down. He ran his fingers through it and took hold of your hand, placing it back into his hair.
The alcohol flowed through you both the more you drank and the more Renji let his hands wander the more ideas you got about what to do for his birthday surprise. And that’s when it hit you.
Your friends had all occupied themselves with a partner or conversation so you turned to Renji and cupped his face in your hands. “Come with me.”
Renji gave you an odd look as you took his hand and led him toward the bathroom hallway. You grabbed the front of his shirt and pushed him down the hallway, to a part that had no lighting, and pushed him against the wall behind him. A small groan left him and your hands ran down his shirt and rest on the waistband of his pants.
You looked up slowly and watched as his hungry eyes watched you. You slowly tugged at his pants, unzipping his fly as his erection slowly stood for you.
A rasp filled his voice as he placed a hand on your head, slowly wrapping into your hair. “God, you’re such a troublesome girl, now aren’t you?”
You grasped his erection in your hand and slowly took it into your mouth. Your head bobbed and his hands grabbed your hair tighter, wanting so hard to take control of the situation, but not wanting to ruin the moment.
His head dropped back into the wall and his worry about being caught disappeared. At this point he didn’t care who was coming down the hall and who saw him. It would show them all that you belonged to him.
His hips slowly bucked as he felt his high approaching quicker and quicker. Your pace quickened as he started to push your head, unable to keep himself from taking control anymore.
A strangled sound left the back of his throat as he emptied himself into your mouth. His seed coated your throat as you slowly swallowed and pulled away.
The evil smirk that now painted his face as he looked back at you made a shiver run down your spine. “Good girl.” He watched as you stood up slowly. Renji leaned forward and whispered into your ear. “Now just wait until we get back home. The birthday celebration isn’t over until you’re screaming my name.”

Rumors
Tumblr media
Day 22 Prompt: there’s been talk about us
Summary: Rumors chased after Ichigo and Rukia their entire lives. People liked to gossip about their appearances. About their statuses. It was always the trivial matters that rubbed others the wrong way.
And then came the rumors about the nature of their relationship. For Day 22 of @ichirukimonth 2021.
Rating: Gen/K
*Also crossposted to AO3 and FFN!
If you like my fic, please consider buying me a coffee!
We fear that which we cannot see.
“Hey, have you heard?”
“That Kurosaki kid—”
“Yes, that Kuchiki girl—”
“No way! A delinquent joining our class?”
“Of course that untalented recruit is a noble. It’s the Kuchiki influence. I thought so, too!”
Rumors chased after Ichigo and Rukia their entire lives. People liked to gossip about their appearances. About their statuses. It was always the trivial matters that rubbed others the wrong way.
And then came the rumors about the nature of their relationship. A bit surprising, to be sure, but not altogether unexpected, given how petty gossip hounds could be. Just another bored rumor passed along the mill that would eventually be forgotten and replaced with something new.
They both denied it as firmly as they could. It never satiated others’ nosy appetites for long.
All those rumors fell away when she was whisked back to Soul Society. They were the last thing on his mind when he and the others fought to rescue her. He’d forgotten about them completely until she and the other Shinigami showed up during the next semester, unannounced, and the rumors started up again.
It didn’t help that she was living with him now, either.
“What’s the deal with you and Rukia-chan anyway?” Isshin asked while helping his son with the dishes. The girls were having fun getting to know each other upstairs, so he figured he’d step in.
Ichigo threw him a peeved side-glance. “What do you mean? She already told you she has no money or relatives here to help her.”
“So you volunteered to take her in without a second thought, huh?”
“You expect me to let her fend for herself?” The defensive edge in his voice made Isshin pause.
He smiled as he took a dish from the rack to dry. “No, of course not. You’ve always been the type to stick your neck out for someone in need. Why do you think your mom and I named you Ichigo?”
Ichigo said nothing, just continued washing dishes. If one good thing could be said about his punk of a son, it was the fact that he never flaunted his inner strength.
“You’ve never really had many friends growing up. For the longest time, the only friend you had was Tatsuki-chan and then Chad. Everyone else was too scared to try and talk to you. So I’m glad you’re putting yourself out there this year and making a bunch of new friends, Ichigo.”
His son’s face softened.
“That being said, you never answered my question, my son.” Isshin’s eyes sparkled with a single-minded pursuit. “Could it be you don’t trust me enough to tell me the truth? Or is it that you're too shy?”
That all-too-familiar scowl returned to Ichigo’s face. “What the hell’re you talking about, Dad?”
“There you go, dodging the question again! I’m talking about Rukia-chan! Is she, y’know, your girlfriend?”
“My...girlfriend?” A dish slipped from Ichigo's grasp and shattered into pieces.
“Aw crap!” he swore, stooping to the floor. “Sorry, Dad!”
Before he could reach for the largest piece, Isshin gently pushed his son's hands away. “Let me handle this, Ichigo. I don’t want you hurting yourself. Go get the trash can.”
“Dad, it’s no trouble. I can get it.”
Isshin paused. “To be honest with you, son, my joints ain’t as spry as they used to be. I probably can’t get up right now even if I wanted to.”
“Oh, what? You’re such an old man,” Ichigo said as he pushed himself up.
At that moment, Isshin slipped a small pill into his mouth. Urahara’s gigai tech might have been impressive when he was first gifted the thing, but damn was it getting more and more unresponsive as he got older.
After Ichigo cleared the shards away, Isshin let his son finish washing the dishes. It was the easiest way to trap him there, at any rate.
“Anyway,” he began again, “what is Rukia-chan to you?”
His son hesitated, brown eyes darting around as if he could pull some bullshit excuse from the murky dishwater.
He covered it up with yet another scowl. “We’re just friends. Sorry to disappoint you and Yuzu.”
“Aw, c’mon, Ichigo! Your sister and I are just curious!”
“You guys are way too keen about my nonexistent love life. Why don’t you two get lives of your own?”
“You kids might not understand this since you’re so young, but when you become a parent, your life revolves around your kids! That means your life is my life, too!” Isshin clenched his fist. “So c’mon, Ichigo! Tell me everything! Don’t be shy!”
“I’m not being shy. Quit bugging me.”
“Oh?” Isshin’s eyes gleamed. “Only a truly shy man would be so cold! Come now, my son! Confess your deepest, darkest secrets to your father!”
As soon as he tried to embrace his son, all turned black as his face rammed right into Ichigo’s elbow.
                                                           * * *
The girls upstairs heard a loud crash and Ichigo’s infuriated cursing.
Karin frowned at the floor. “There they go again. God, it’s so exhausting living with them. Sorry, you’re just going to have to deal with them for the time being.”
Rukia slapped on an innocent smile. “Oh, I don’t mind! I think a lively household is kind of fun!”
Another crash thundered through the house as the two men continued brawling away. Karin sighed. “Fun, huh?”
“I just hope they remember to clean up after themselves! I’d hate to clean the kitchen again when I already did it last weekend!” Yuzu said.
Rukia had heard their muffled fighting before when she hid in Ichigo’s closet. To actually bear witness to the Kurosaki family’s antics was another matter entirely. Compared to the piercing silence of the Kuchiki household, this was a much more comforting change of pace.
“Now don’t take this the wrong way, Rukia-chan.” Yuzu fidgeted on her bed . “But…um….”
Karin tilted her head back with a loud sigh. “She wants to know if you and our stupid brother are dating.”
“Karin!” Yuzu shouted, scandalized.
“It’s what you wanted to ask her since she arrived, right?”
“Dating?” Rukia repeated. “No, we’re just friends!”
“Just friends, huh?” Karin muttered.
“Yes, of course.”
“So you say.”
“Karin!”
“I’m just saying it’d be way more interesting if all this was some elaborate ruse for Ichigo to introduce his girlfriend to the family is all.” She flopped back onto her bed, letting her legs swing freely over the edge.
“That certainly would be more interesting, I suppose,” Rukia conceded. “Unfortunately, that’s not true. No offense to your brother, but he’s too honest to think of doing something like that.”
The three paused when Ichigo’s booming sneeze echoed up to them from downstairs.
Karin smirked. “Friend, girlfriend. It’s all the same to me, I guess.” She pointed a finger at Rukia. “You and I might get along swimmingly once you drop that nice-girl act and be yourself, though.”
Rukia blinked. And here she thought her human girl schtick would work here, too.
The smile that crossed her lips was softer, more natural this time. “You and your brother have the same instincts, I see.”
“I’d say I’m better at reading people than he is. He’s a big dope.” Karin waved dismissively.
Yuzu’s warm smile grew. “Whether you’re just friends with Ichi-nii or something more, I’m still glad to have you in our home, Rukia-chan! It’s nice to have more girls in the house for once!”
Rukia dipped her head. “I’m grateful that you’re letting me stay here without questioning my motives. I hope I won’t be a burden to any of you.”
“If you can keep my brother and my dad in line, you’d be more of a help than a hindrance,” Karin said. “Anyway, Yuzu tends to snore and fuss in her sleep, so I hope you can deal with that, too.”
Yuzu flushed and threw a pillow at her sister’s bed. “Karin! I don’t snore!”
Siblings showed the oddest resemblances to one another from time to time. Karin's teasing grin was so much like her brother's that it made Rukia smile in return. Ichigo then barged into the room and plunked himself on the edge of her bed to hang out with them. They all talked about their day and mocked each other in that special way only siblings could. It was warm and exasperatedly caring.
All those silly rumors that once passed around Karakura High about her and Ichigo dating would definitely escalate if anyone saw her living with him. It didn’t matter to her either way.
For once, she'd found a place where she didn’t have to worry about being judged. Rukia could dare to be happy. She dared to relax and laugh along with them. The Kurosaki family treated her like she belonged, and that was enough.
                                                               * * *
“Wait, they live together? Are you sure?”
“Of course! Kojima-san went to their house the other day to bring Kurosaki all the homework he missed, and he told me that Kuchiki-san was the one who answered the door! And she took it from him on his behalf! Like she was his girlfriend or something!”
“No way someone as pretty as her would be shacking up with a guy like that, right?”
“I don’t know. You remember how she climbed in through the third-story window and kicked him in the face and smacked him around? If anything, I feel sorry for Kurosaki.”
Now those rumors couldn’t be helped either. Rukia needed somewhere to stay, and like a little pest, she wormed her way into Ichigo's home and his everyday life. And with his month-long Vizard training going on, he wasn’t exactly around to put a stop to them.
The rumors really started to get out of hand once Ichigo, his friends, and all those weird kids who joined in the middle of the semester disappeared at the same time. No one knew where they went, or if they were even alive.
Some theorized that they had all dropped out to form a street gang. Others proposed the idea that Kurosaki and Kuchiki-san had eloped and invited all their friends to the wedding. All of which were extremely ridiculous, but who was to prove them wrong? Certainly not the subjects of the rumors themselves.
Oddly enough, both Asano and Kojima were the first to dismiss any rumors they heard. They seemed less enthusiastic about it, like their friend’s love life was no longer a fun puzzle to work out. They hung a lot more around Arisawa, who was equally morose and exhausted with it all.
Of course, this only fueled the wild rumors further. Perhaps they were bummed out that they weren’t included in whatever escapades Kurosaki and his other friends got involved with.
Then Kurosaki returned. Without any of those weird friends of his. Without that odd Kuchiki girl by his side.
Kurosaki Ichigo became a recluse, even among those he once called friends.
Perhaps they’d broken up. Maybe she had to move away.
The mystique of their relationship died down pretty quickly after that.
It was not until May of their final year of high school did rumors about Kuchiki Rukia returning circulate around the school. Someone claimed to have seen her hanging around Karakura again. With how eagerly Kurosaki cancelled the rest of his sports team contracts to leave school earlier, it seemed more and more plausible.
Inoue Orihime’s own confirmation that the Kuchiki girl was indeed back only fueled the flames. Apparently, Kuchiki Rukia and all the new kids had to move far away all of a sudden. No, they weren’t all a weird family. No, she would not return to Karakura High.
As for the rumor covering Kuchiki Rukia and Kurosaki Ichigo’s relationship status, Inoue, Arisawa, and Kojima were all tight-lipped on the matter. Despite their best efforts, Asano Keigo was not all that great at keeping secrets, and it only took a bit of pressure for him to crack.
“No, they’re not dating! Can you believe that?” he’d screech at anyone who would listen. “I swear, I’ve tried so hard to hook them up, but nothing I do works! Tell me, what’s a guy gotta do to help his dumbass friend score, huh?”
                                                           * * *
Rukia was in the middle of writing up a report when Ichigo decided to show up for an impromptu visit. Admittedly, it was nice catching up with him, but it did wreck her entire work schedule for the day.
Well, perhaps wreck wasn’t the right word for it. She didn’t mind his company. She just normally finished up faster than this.
The odd look her brother threw her when she requested that they be left alone put her off. It did not help that she had flushed when Renji raised a tattooed eyebrow at her before he left, nor the fact that the servants hushed their giggles when Ichigo looked over his shoulder at them.
“Hey, is something going on around here?” he asked after catching the latest servant stifling a smile as she passed. “The servants have been whispering to each other all day.”
That’s because you decided to barge in so blatantly like you live here, you fool, she wanted to say.
Rukia shrugged affectedly. “People like to talk.”
About us, to be precise.
Ichigo scoffed. “People are always talking about me like I’m some kind of freak because of my hair. I’ve never cared all that much about gossip. It’s all bullshit anyway.”
She set her brush down on the inkstone. “I see. You too, huh?”
“Too?” he repeated, finally looking over at her.
“You heard Nii-sama explain why I was adopted into the Kuchiki clan, correct?” She took his silence as a yes. “The Kuchiki name is a prestigious one, but that notoriety does not come without its costs. The moment I was adopted, I was immediately placed in Squad Thirteen despite never having graduated from the Shinigami Academy. I was deemed a product of nepotism, and the other squad members hated me for it.”
Rukia shut her eyes. The memory of Kaien’s warmth flickered in the back of her mind. That would be a story for another day.
“It may seem ridiculous to you, how such a thing could hurt me.” Her smile did not reach her eyes.
He shook his head. “It’s not ridiculous, Rukia. What’s ridiculous is all the stuff people assumed about you. They don’t even know you.”
“No,” she said. “But even worthless rumors can start to take their toll once enough of them build up.”
“Oh yeah? Well, I’m gonna change that.”
Her smile fell. “How so?”
“We’re friends,” Ichigo said without any hesitation whatsoever. “So anyone who talks shit about you gets the business end of my sword.”
“A little extreme, don’t you think?”
Ichigo snorted but said nothing else.
To alleviate the tension brewing around him, she teased, “And what rumors about yourself have you heard lately? I’ve heard quite a lot. I’ve even been asked to confirm a few, on occasion.”
“Yeah? Like what?”
Rukia turned the various rumors over in her mind, struggling to find the best way to spin it. A joke perhaps? Could he laugh off something like this?
No, Ichigo would probably get embarrassed and storm off to find the cretin who started these unsavory rumors in the first place. She would assume such talk was unbefitting of those who served in the Thirteen Court Guard Squads, but apparently she was mistaken.
“Nothing much. Petty gossip.” She continued writing her report as if such matters didn’t concern her at all. “About you and I, mostly. What we are to each other.”
Ichigo scowled. “Not this again.”
“Unfortunately, yes.”
“It’s like people don’t have anything else to do with their lives. Stop trying to live vicariously through us already.”
Rukia paused. “Live vicariously?”
“Yeah, it’s like when people try to experience stuff through—”
“No, I know what it means. But what did you mean by that?”
The moment he met her eyes, she understood. There was a frantic, helpless gleam to them, but even so, he did not dare look away.
It was not a challenge, but more a question. It was a plea. His confession.
“Oh. I see.”
“Look, I wasn’t trying to…. I mean, it’s not…. This wasn’t the way that I wanted to….”
Ichigo put his head in his hands and took a deep breath. When he finally sat up straight again, he looked her right in the eye. “Rukia, do you want to go out with me?”
“Oh?” She leaned her head in a hand, the corner of her mouth tugging up. “Are you sure you want to prove those rumormongers right?”
He scowled. “This isn't about them! I told you, I don’t give a shit about what other people think. It wasn’t the rumors that made me like you.”
“What a bold thing to admit.” She covered her mouth in mock surprise.
“Ugh, shut up! It’s hard enough to say as it is.”
Rukia began to laugh. “You’re so strange, Ichigo. I like that about you, though.”
He tried and failed to hide how red his face had become. “Don’t make fun of me.”
“I’m not.” Her smile became more genuine then as she reached her hand out to his. “I am happy you asked. Although, I hope you know that it is uncouth of you to drop in on a woman unannounced. According to what I read about courting in the World of the Living, it is also customary to have a chaperone along with us on our dates.”
“Yeah, that’s been outdated for centuries now. What the hell kind of books are you even reading?” he scoffed.
“How rude! And here I was, excited to ask Nii-sama to accompany us for our first date!”
“What? Don’t bring Byakuya into this!”
Their silly bickering echoed all throughout the courtyard. Even still, they did not let go of the other's hand.
                                                             * * *
"Hey, have you heard?"
"That Substitute Shinigami and Lieutenant Kuchiki are dating?"
"Why is this news? Weren't they already a couple?"
"Ah, I see! So I was right all along."
Years and years of speculation, only to have the confession be far more mundane than they hoped.
The funny thing about rumors was, once they were confirmed, they lost their appeal extremely quickly.
Another rumor soon came to take its place.
"Kurosaki Ichigo is a noble? No way!"
"Sure, he looks a lot like Lieutenant Shiba, but isn't he just a human?"
"You sure he didn't just marry into the Kuchiki family?"
And so it goes. And so the rumors circled back once again.
If you can say that your heart doesn't change
                                               Then that is strength.
                                                                -
No, nothing can change my world.
The only time a petty rumor is actually one hundred percent true lol. But I mean, it's not hard to disprove with the way they're always looking at each other.
I suppose this fic can kind of fit in the same AU as Home and Clearing Away the Rain. Maybe consider it a prequel of sorts, if you like!
Thanks for reading! Until next time!

you can do it all, why not? here's me sending the ask and kindly request you to answer all the ship questions 😂😂
omg! yes yes yes! thank you, sky!!
okay, so this is going to be a mix of all the fandoms i am in. as you all know, i am a ships enthusiast so get ready! let's do this!
1. first ship you remember
takeru/hikari from digimon. they were my otp before i even knew what shipping is. also, they awakened my love for the pink/green combination. the ending still makes me so bitter (who isn’t bitter about it...)!
2. your newest ship
gojo and marin from my dress up darling!! they’re so cute omg!! i love them so much!! i cannot. i can’t wait for them to get together, but at the same time, let the pining continue!!
3. favourite ship ever
...is this question even legal. um. there is not such thing as “favorite ship ever”??? don’t make me choose. legit, i’m not going to choose. sorry. THERE ARE TOO MANY.
4. favourite m/f ship
my default answer has always been ariadne/arthur from inception. but is it still?
5. favourite m/m ship
casey/rj from power rangers jungle fury. i really want casey for myself but for some reason this ship made me feel things??? i read a smutty fic of them once, and the flames in my heart soared.
6. favourite f/f ship
gia/emma from power rangers megaforce/super megaforce. they’re gay. they’re absolutely gay. i love emma/orion but emma is gay. especially gia.
7. most innocent ship
bridge/syd from power rangers spd! they are so cute.
8. most fluffy ship
charlie/harper from set it up, and matt/jenna from 13 going on 30!! they’re the cutest <3 and like, i don’t see anything wrong with them at all.
9. most angsty ship
james and juliet from lost. ‘nuff said.
10. most smutty ship
let’s go and watch netflix, there’s plenty of there.
11. ship that you would never have wanted in canon but like in fanworks
arthur/eames from inception. do not count the poly ship! this is arthur/eames alone. i do not want them together at all, but their fanworks??? so pretty!!
12. character that you can only imagine in one ship
pretty much all the characters in my ships. i mostly go “no, they belong to them!”. i refuse to see most of my characters in ships that are not my ships.
13. most shippable character
i’m not too sure about this one but i see sansa stark from game of thrones, omg. i’m a huge sansa/jamie fan but i can also see sansa/theon and sansa/jon. i used to like sansa/petyr but i realized the error of my ways. i also like sansa/tyrion but more as friends. i also like dany/sansa!!
14. character that you can’t imagine in any ship
oliver wood from harry potter. and also peter pevensie from the chronicles of narnia. why? well. you know.
15. favourite poly ship
arthur/ariadne/eames from inception. i have read so many fics of them that i cannot even see them without each other. i will always love arthur/ariadne alone, and eames/robert, but this poly ship is just...wow. i also like that idea that their son takes after arthur, and their daughter takes after eames.
16. characters that you kinda ship but prefer as brotp
mmm gilgamesh/thena from marvel. i love their relationship. like, i want one. and i know some people ship them romantically but i’ve always brotp-ed them. but seeing gifs and finally watching the movie, i can see where they’re coming from. and it is cute, i admit, but i see them more as a brotp.
17. characters that you ship and can’t imagine to be friends
mulder/scully from the x-files. have you seen them?? omg you will see what i’m talking about.
18. guilty pleasure ship

19. ship that you never expected to ship.
ichigo/orihime from bleach. tbh i really thought i’d ship ichigo/rukia but here we are.
20. ship that you liked but don’t anymore
oliver/katie from harry potter. i loved reading stories of them before for some reason. but now that i realize oliver isn’t too shippable, and my new found love for george/katie back then.
21. ship that one day you were thinking of and thought “wait, when I started shipping it?”
steve/natasha from marvel! i know i found them cute in the avengers, especially in their first scene, but like...how did it escalate so big???? i was just looking for loki and clint but then i got romangers!!!
22. ship that you immediately fall in love with after one scene despite not considering it before.
same as #21 (copy pasted): steve/natasha from marvel! i know i found them cute in the avengers, especially in their first scene, but like...how did it escalate so big???? i was just looking for loki and clint but then i got romangers!!!11
23. poly ship that you ship despite not shipping some of the characters in it outside of poly ship.
same answer as #15 (copy pasted): arthur/ariadne/eames from inception. i have read so many fics of them that i cannot even see them without each other. i will always love arthur/ariadne alone, and eames/robert, but this poly ship is just...wow. i also like that idea that their son takes after arthur, and their daughter takes after eames.
24. biggest notp
i have many. absolutely many. but when i saw this question the first time my thought went straight to sora/yamato from digimon. like...no. i cannot stand it. it just does’t seem right. don’t ask me to explain. do not. because. just because.
25. favourite foe yay ship
all my enemies-to-lovers ships.
26. characters that you like in every dynamic (lovers, friends, enemies)
dean/jo from supernatural! more as lovers but i don’t mind them as just friends either. maybe not enemies enemies, but their banter is mini-banter is beautiful.
27. ship that you expected to ship before reading/watching franchise and you do
ron/hermione from harry potter most definitely. i’ve heard a lot about them before i watched/read hp (i think my first time to watch was 3rd grade? and my reading was 2nd year hs?). but even before that i already knew romione would be the one.
28.  ship that you expected to ship before reading/watching franchise and you don’t
ah! there was one, there was one. wait, let me try to remember. ugh, i cannot remember it. but there was one! one is clark/lexa from the 100, but i know there was one that i really thought i’d ship but i didn’t!! oh, another one i thought of is sam/ruby from supernatural.
29. favourite crossover ship
anzai from devils line and mai taniyama from ghost hunt <3 i dunno, i just think it’d be cute!
30. favourite canon ship
i will take advantage of all my ships that are canon so all my canon ships!!
31. favourite non-canon ship
sadly...way too many. i cry so very much.
32. favourite ship for hurt-comfort
i really like clint and laura/bobbi from marvel. again, i’m not sure if laura and bobbi are actually the same person but i just love reading hurt/comfort stuff for them.
33. ship that you ship in one installment of franchise but not in other (for example in movie, but not in the book this movie is based on)
finnick and johanna from the hunger games, i like them in the movies but not in the books. i just didn’t like annie in the movies.
34. ship that you never expected to ship when you were younger but here you are
huh...i can’t really think of any right now, tbh. i don’t think i never expected to ship something when i was young. i’m pretty sure most of the ships i like atm are not unexpected?? i think?
35. ship that you have kinda love/hate relationship with
daniel/daisy from marvel. i like them, they’re cute, but i super ship daisy with *ahem* ward (do not blame me! they did such a good thing in s1!!!).
36. characters that you can’t decide if you prefer as ship or brotp
fitzsimmons from marvel. i do like them as a ship but at the same time i only see them as a brotp?? but yes, i know they’re married.
omg this was so hard but i loved it so much!!! thank you!!
send me a number and a fandom (or just a number!)

@godkilller:
WEEPS. it's a sad thing, rangiku abandoning her friends for gin -- it's not something he'd feel 'complimented' for by any means, he wants her happy and it'd break his heart. he'd want her to keep her friends and forget him. but that's just another reason for rangiku to smack him outta that sulky bullshit --
It’s not so much that she abandons them, really; a decade or so after the Blood War, things are just so different for her and her friends.  Renji and Rukia have a child ----- so do Orihime and Ichigo.  Everyone’s moved on, in some way, shape, or form.  Rangiku’s moved on enough that she doesn’t think about Gin every day, anymore ----- every so often a memory will come to mind, sure, but she’s no longer paralyzed by the echo of a nice moment, frozen in time.  That being said, she doesn’t quite feel like she belongs there anymore ----- in Seireitei, amongst her peers.
She doesn’t quite feel needed, I guess ----- which is a sad thing to say.  But at the same time, she’s isolated herself emotionally and feels incapable of opening up to anyone, which was an awful coping mechanism that got her through those first few months / years of pretending she was fine.  Rangiku has ALWAYS distanced herself from her emotions, not wanting to admit when something’s bothering her, much less speak it into existence.  That’s a flaw of hers that carried through her prior relationship with Gin, too ----- pre-betrayal, and ultimately, up until his death.  It increased tenfold after the Winter War, and is the main culprit for why she feels unimportant, in the grand scheme of things.
Gin is right to point it out, though, and want more for her.  But she will also counter that argument and point out that she’s happy just being beside him now, after everything.  I do suspect that she will eventually feel the pull back to her duties, and affiliation with the Gotei 13 ----- but it wouldn’t be right away.  I also firmly believe that she would write letters to everyone important to her  ( ESPECIALLY Toshiro; that’s her person, alongside Izuru )  before trekking into the depths of Hell to say where she was going, and where they could find her ... but that she needed time away, and to tend to matters very important to her.  And she would hope that they’d understand.
Rangiku isn’t perfect, by any means.  She has her share of flaws, and as painful as it is to shed light on them, those flaws are just as important to her character as her strengths.  So while isolating herself to the point of feeling unnecessary / unimportant ultimately makes the decision to abandon her post all the more easy for her to make, it doesn’t mean it’s a good one.  She’s avoidant of responsibilities and duties, and her own damn emotions, to a fault.  But the Rangiku Gin meets after 14 years apart from one another isn’t the same Rangiku he initially fell in love with.  And Gin isn’t the same either, by any means.  Which makes the whole scenario terrifying, for both of them ----- but also, what makes them need time together to rebuild, away from everything  ( and everyone )  else ... at least for a while, until they can stand on solid ground once again.
