Here's what I've been up to while I was gone on this project. I basically started slowing things down to get it closer to a survival horror. Which of course, meant I needed DEEP INVENTORY MANAGEMENT, BABAAAAAAY

Things you specifically or always do when playing certain videogames
I'm doing another tag game about videogames and our not-so-quirky quirks. Give 5 examples this time of habits or behaviors you commit when specific games or genres are played.
Here are mine:
Yakuza Series (PS4): I always, always call the local izakaya and order a take out of tekkamaki (tuna rolls) or some kajiki sashimi. because this game has your character nosh on premium sushi. Worse when you read the description and it always gets me mouthwatering for it. Nevermind the ramen or the donburi in that game, I love sushi and I will never play the Yakuza games without a dozen or so tekkamakis!
Streetfighter/Tekken: Or any one on one fighting games. I never play competitively. So when I sit in the arcade and play against the machine, and someone comes in about to pop in a coin, I always tell then "please don't. I do not want a challenger." I suck at actual human challengers. Thank goodness I've not encountered a jerk who ruins the game for me and let me finish my game.
Rune Factory/Harvest Moon or any farm sim: I check the list of marriageable candidates in advance and always pick the oldest bachelor. If there is an option to create a harem, mores the fun!
Resident Evil 4: I play tetris with my inventory. I am sure I am not alone in this :D
The Witcher 3: Nilfgaard always win! Also, I do not search for Ciri in the Isle of Mist until I get to talk to Countess Mignole with Vesemir still alive, then talk to Vesemir about her T_T.
I taggeth @bittersweetbark, @valandhirwriter, @regis-favorite-raven, @andordean, @alphagravy, @rotatingremains, @gauntermetaverse, @geraltyen-of-corvobianco. Anyone can also join and make their list!

Sketch of the upcoming crossover fanart
Recently, I indulged in nostalgia, watching old let's plays of YouTubers of antiquity, and fell in love with this artifact of the era.
For your attention, I present to you the game “Sir, you are being hunted”! Where you are hunted by A LOT of ROBOTS(And those who know me are aware of how passionately I embrace everything mechanical), your inventory is some kind of pissing Tetris, and the environment causes indescribable anxiety! 🥰

The TTRPGs I played in 2023: Part 2
Near the end of November, I asked for recommendations on one page TTRPGs I should play for a event I ran. The goal was to play a TTRPG for about 40-50 minutes before swapping to something new. While I sadly didn't get around to playing all of the recommendations, I still appreciate all of the games people showed me. Reading new game is something I enjoy doing, so I still had fun even if they didn't make it to the table.
Before I go into each TTRPG individually, there was a common running theme between playing all of the games that I feel like I should say. As much as I enjoy the concept and writing one page and other extremely small TTRPGs, I will admit that playing them was a rough experience. Working with that small amount of mechanics and concepts was something me and the table were not used to and I'm not sure if these kind of games are something I will play more of later. Whenever I got excited by a mechanic is one of these games, I always felt like I wanted something more. I think these types of games are great thought experiments for game design, but I can understand why these type of games haven't gotten much traction in the mainstream (with a few exceptions). However, don't let my thoughts discourage you from writing these type of games. I still love making them because its a fun challenge to see how much content you can cram into such a small space. This was something that most of these games did fairly well, so lets move onto that. If you want to check out any of these games or their authors, I have everything linked on this post.
Rollers of the Lost Artifact by JayBlnk6
Tumblr media
This was the starting game and it left a good first impression. In this game players are archeologists looking for special artifacts. The simple skill system was nice, but what I really loved was the inventory system. Each item size has a certain shape and you have to fit it into a 3x3 square. I always love inventory systems that force you to play a Tetris (turning a mundane thing into something fun), and this game did a good job fitting it into a smaller system. Since we were playing multiple games at once, the players didn't get to sell the artifact, but I still appreciate the rules where players get a choice on what they wish to do with it.
Rats in Space by Jay Writes
Tumblr media
I think the title of this game explains itself. The players are rats in space looking for a special piece of cheese. The theming of this game was a lot of fun to play with. The morale system was also an interesting addition to the d6 system I've seen a lot of one page games (including my own) use. It was fun to see the players start to panic as their moral system got lower because of a large streak of bad rolls. I also really liked the d6 table for determining one last consequence when the cheese is found. The players thought they finally found it, but then realized they had one last obstacle to conquer (that being the horrible smell in the room).
Rough Beginnings by @tornioduva
Tumblr media
This was the most unique game I played that night and despite some odd moments, I had a lot of fun with it! The players are simple group of adventurers, but there is a small element of mystery to it. They each have a secret personality trait and one of them is secretly try to sabotage the rest of the group. I love the creative ideas this game had, but it was a bit of an awkward play. In order for the adventurers to escape, the GM needs to roll a 9 from a 2d6 on the scenario table. The first round, I rolled a 9 for the first scenario. The second round, I rolled a 9 after the players went through about 15 scenarios, the majority of them being the players getting HP for succeeding. I love the concept of this game and I think it inspired me to make my own deception based TTRPG, but it was rather clunky. I have no issue with that at the end of the day. I love playing games that take risks and try new things!
By String and Song by @efangamez
Tumblr media
I've enjoyed participating in game jams run and reading some games by efangamez before, so when somebody at the game community mentioned one of their one page games but couldn't remember the name, I knew where to find it. While the game they were recommending was Barbaria, I ultimately ended up going with this game because bards seemed like more fun to play and most of the games in this series seemed like they were reskins of each other. I feel kind of bad saying this, but the game just felt like one page D&D 5e. It's a d20 game which seems to be rare for one page TTRPGs and the way everything was written with Skill Checks and attacking seemed to invoke that game. I guess if you wanted to introduce smaller games to people who have only played D&D I guess this could be a good starting point, but I think most people would just ask to go back to D&D. If I had to guess, most of my negative feelings about this game likely come from me just being burnt out of D&D. It was written well and the enemy descriptions were flavorful, but I don't ever see myself going back to play this.
Honey Heist by gshowitt
Tumblr media
Whenever I hear one page TTRPGs discussed, this game always seems to be recommended. After playing it, I can see why. The concept of being normal bears trying to break into a convention was already an instant sell. I loved the idea of the balance of trying to keep your bear and criminal parts from not taking over. It was one of the most interesting ideas for a fail state I've seen in a game. This the game we played for the least amount of time because it was near the end of the meeting and we were all tired, but the random animal chaos mixed in with surprisingly intricate criminal planning made for a fun mix.

I am here to Post
(check in post)
still nothing particularly impressive to show off but I'm still largely tripping over pieces of social media styled expectations for creativity so it's not that surprising; I Will probably have something next time (but it's nothing artsy it's a video game feat of strength I've been working on for a while and honestly a pretty mediocre one don't get too excited)
at any rate I have been waiting for the new rimworld expansion ( Anomaly ) with bated breath and the book of hours expansion is drawing my eye quite a lot lately too (though it seems to be farther out)
weird SCP facility colony builder sim is within reach; it remains to be see if it is executed well
it's a fun concept so it's a pity to see it's essentially ended the honeymoon the playerbase had with rimworld; a lot of people are not really interested in it it seems
besides that I've fufilled my contractual obligation to buy a survivors-like every six months or so and grabbed god of weapons; I dunno if it beats halls of torment for me specifically but if you're heavy into the inventory tetris thing it may be Your Game Of The Genre
(I also got backpack hero with it, it's a similar inventory tetris focused slay the spire iteration and it's also good, very similar, but different game structure, namely it's slay the spire instead of vampire survivors big surprise I know)
and since this is The Check In Post Where I Talk About Video Games; I'm just going to link some games I just sorta thought seemed notable while browsing the "new" tab on steam so you don't have to wade through all the hentai games yourself; I know very little about any of these and it's strictly a "hey this game is new and doesn't seem to have gotten a lot of attention"
Auto Forge (terraria + factorio; though a lot of people note it's really more of a 2D factorio)
From Glory to Goo (RTS about holding a position against goo monsters; nothing really exceptionally weird about this I just thought it looked like a solid viddy game)
QUIT TODAY (beat em up with a newgrounds visual style)
Bones Cafe (a plate up esque game with automation in the form of ressurecting skeletons to work for you; you can also butcher and make food out of the customers, despite what this all sounds like it's very cute)
Concrete Visions (token This Game Looked Weird And It Drew My Eye game; to be honest the entire thing is sort've giving me a weird vibe with this website toting a developer review from a website that I've never heard of so do with that what you will I guess
it all feels a little money launder-ey I guess is what I'm saying but I Am Mentally Ill so please don't take that as case of this being well founded or even logical as I was doing this in the wee hours of the morning)
that is that for now
ta ta for now internet

Just finished this game, totally loved it. The genre is, I’m going to say...Cozy Eldritch Horror Fishing and Depression Simulator. You also get to Tetris your fish and cargo in your boat’s inventory like RE4, which should be the game’s tagline.
I got the good ending but I went back to check out the bad ending and it’s way better. So seek out the bad ending, embrace chaos.
Okay I’m starting Disco Elysium now wish me luck.

Daily Doodle - Dredge
So, I started playing Dredge recently, and it's REALLY good. Honestly, lowkey, I think any game with a tetris style inventory is a good game, but also, it does a really good job of making you want to explore. Like, I feel like it is the perfect game for some Shadow of The Coleuses-esque mysteries.
Anyway, back to my drawing, I'm still really struggling to refine my final paintings. Like, I'm trying to hold onto painting regularly, and it's tough. But also, I can kind of feel my skill ebb whenever I miss a couple days. Like, I'm kind of trying a lot of things at the moment to try and make my life just a little better. I'm trying to exercise more. I'm trying to eat better. I'm trying to improve my work situation. And like, most of these are routine based things. They require me to work on them daily, or at least regularly, in a semi-fixed schedule. And obviously, taking breaks and being properly rested is important as well, but how much of tiredness is a consequence of my poor habits and lifestyle?
Idk. I'm happy with the drawing. Honestly, it might just be that, as I finish more paintings, I get better/faster at making them. And I don't feel the need to spend as much time refining them? Like, I'm happy with how this turned out. I think the claw could have used a touch up. And there are a few more spots where I could have added detail. I really hope my paintings don't start looking rushed.
But anyway. Enjoy.

YOUR MUSE'S INVENTORY.
rules: list the things your muse carries in their pockets or bags in their everyday life. (optional: explain their significance.) repost, don’t reblog.
tagged by: @inhericurse thank you!! tagging: you!
carton of silk cut cigarettes — breast pocket of his shirt / suit. he thinks it's funny when he gets the ones with the most obvious warning labels / infographics, but he's not picky enough to ask for them specifically. there's usually a picture of kit ryan tucked into the back of whichever one he's carrying at the time.
1-2 toothpicks — also breast pocket of his shirt / suit. he has zero compunctions about smoking indoors, but once they started passing laws about that sort of thing, he had to pick up something to soothe that itch when he can't get away and light up.
paper clip — also breast pocket of his shirt / suit. for picking locks. he had a set of actual lockpicks at some point, but lost them between flats and hasn't bothered to get more. he figures there's more plausible deniability in a paper clip, anyway.
leather billfold wallet — back right trouser pocket. holds his ID, oyster card, library card, a playing card (for glamours, usually the ace of spades), one motel keycard per-country-recently-visited (which he can get to work on any empty room with a little bit of magic; his living situation tends to be up in the air, people just don't appreciate magical infestations / loud-ass music in the middle of the night / generally weird shit like they used to), and several strips of printer paper he's cut to be the approximate size and shape of pound notes (so that if he's ever short on cash, he can glamour them to fill the role. nobody's end-of-day till count is safe). holds upwards of a hundred quid when he's found a bookie that doesn't know his name, but that's getting harder and harder these days.
silver lighter — interior suit pocket / right interior trenchcoat pocket. his current one was a gift from his friend rich, after they got to talking about the phenomenon of anti-tourism matchboxes; it's engraved with a lighthouse and has PISS ON IT scratched in underneath, probably from a key.
outdated, badly cracked mobile phone — interior suit pocket / left interior trenchcoat pocket. i keep saying it's a flip phone, but i'm starting to consider that he defaults to a blackberry instead, and the only thing standing between him and a breakdown at any given time is tetris. he breaks / loses / ruins phones frequently, so there's a good chance he'll have a different model every time you see him.
loose coins — trenchcoat pockets. he tries to keep them in his wallet, but he's not that diligent about it. he finds it distracting when they rattle together and he often needs to be a little sneaky, so he's got a tendency to separate change out into different pockets to reduce the noise.
a variety of keys — trouser pockets / trenchcoat pockets. a key to his current flat in brixton, a key to chas's storage unit in streatham (where he stores all his occult kitsch), and a key to the back door of ray monde's old shop. he's also got a key to the black library at the vatican, which he's very smug about and which he hangs onto in case he needs a magic focus that's guaranteed to open any door. like the coins, these are usually separated out into different pockets.
a pendulum — trenchcoat pockets. for divination and hypnosis. he's got a couple of options he alternates between — gold pendant, chunk of amethyst on a chain, pocket watch (usually goes with the blue suit) — but the pendant is usually the one he forgets to take out of his pockets at the end of the day, so that's the most common.
2-3 condoms — trenchcoat pockets. always be prepared.
pair of white gloves, worn thin — left trenchcoat pocket. a holdover from the 90s when he used to wear them all the time, now they're just there because he's used to their presence and can't be arsed to find a place for them at home. also useful for touching things that aren't safe for skin contact, but he usually only remembers that they're there after he's gone and touched the things that aren't safe for skin contact.
various bits & bobs for casting — the trenchcoat pockets contain vast multitudes of random shit, depending on what he's been up to and what level of threat has been the most recent baseline. on average, you can expect to find some crushed sprigs of sage, pieces of chalk, individually-wrapped charcoal sticks, fragments of bone, tangled thread, baggies of ash / graveyard dirt / cinnamon / incense cones, and currency from all over the world.

Unfortunately, I think a lot more people prefers this combat and survival horror system. I'd honestly have preferred they at least gave an invincible mode like Control.
see even though i don't like the combat, and i say i wish alan wake was a walking simulator, ultimately i think that the light/dark mechanics add so much to the overall game, and idk how you would have it in the game without the combat. i get why its there.
but the survival horror elements?? the limited resources and especially the tiny inventory? theres games where inventory tetris really does add to the overall oppressive atmosphere like resident evil 2 and pathologic 2, where it meshes well with the overall horror, but it's just so unnecessary in alan wake imo. the visuals and the sound design already do an excellent job of building up an atmosphere of dread, and more than that, the fog and the sound and the manuscripts and the lunchboxes and the weird fbc experiments all build up a very strange atmosphere. and i think it clashes with the different flavour of dread that inventory tetris gives you.

For followers of this archive, Madou Monogatari doesn’t require an introduction. That said, there is a particular entry in the series that we also cover, but isn’t as talked about as much as the rest of the series.
Sorcery Saga.
Tumblr media
Released in 2013 for the PS Vita and 2018 for Steam, Sorcery Saga, also known as Sei Madou Monogatari, is the most recent entry in the series, developed by Compile Hearts. Due to the Puyo/Madou rights split, the game relies on expies of the old cast and because of that, it’s easy to see why it isn’t usually part of the same conversation as the rest of the series.
Make no mistake though, this is Madou Monogatari and by extension, Puyo in spirit. Pupuru starts the game with a tower exam and has Kuu as a partner in dungeons ala’ Carbuncle. The comical obsession everyone has with curry could be straight out of Nazo Puyo and familiar running gags like Schezo/Zeo’s bad wording or Rulue/Cliora’s affections for Satan/Gigadis, are here and accounted for. While the new cast wear their inspirations on their sleeves, there is also nuance there to make them stand out, Pupuru in particular is an endearing middle ground between Arle and Amitie that I grew to love very quickly.
The story itself plays into the comedic side of Madou and Puyo, which is all fine and good. We even get unlockable manzai that are very Puyo in nature and let the characters show even more sides of them. The writing itself is also very Compile Puyo and even has some similarity in how sounds are described, to the Puyo Puyo Tetris localizations 4 years later.
In terms of gameplay, it is still a dungeon crawler, however, it’s a rogue-like, more comparable to Waku Waku Puyo Dungeon than then the traditional Madou Monogatari.
It’s up to personal taste if this is good or bad, but at either rate, it makes for a solid beginner's rogue-like.Pupuru and Kuu start every Dungeon at Level 1, so there isn’t any level grinding between dungeons and you don’t have to worry about coming into anything underleveled.
The real key is to enhance your weapons and shields, which can be done by merging them with items in Pupuru’s room and coming in with a decent inventory, because Kuu needs to be fed. He does level up from eating stuff though, so inventory management on what items you take with you and what items from the dungeon floors to use, keep or feed to Kuu are a major key to success.
The actual combat and exploration are very in-line with Waku Puyo Dungeon, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon and similar titles and once you learn the importance of Kuu’s role, the game becomes a comfortable, inviting and far less punishing example of the genre.
The visuals are kept to a cute chibi style, with nicely drawn portraits for cutscenes and the music ranges from good to perfectly serviceable, at least in my opinion. The sound design during combat could have used some work though, since voice clips repeat fast and a lot. Thankfully that can be dealt with in the menus though.
The game also isn’t too bad with Compile Hearts’ usual fanservice shenanigans, it’s mostly tame, though you do get stuff like Ms. Saffron, who sure doesn’t look like any teacher I ever saw or Puni, who’s anti-clothes I am personally not comfortable with, which is a shame too, because as a character she’s perfectly fine and not fanservice-y at all.
That aside and a couple smaller gripes like the combat sound design, Sorcery Saga is charming, inviting, funny and carries the Puyo/Madou spirit well. It is on Steam and I do recommend at least giving it a look. It is a piece of Puyo/Madou’s history after all and happy to flaunt it.
