I just finished Sensei mo Net Sedai (The Net Generation Teacher) a 2-vol manga by Nata Kokone written in 2018-19. It’s so good. And there’s a casual gay character! One of the students is in love with his male best friend, and it’s not simply hinted at. It’s not a love story (even if it does deal with unrequited love) so there are no romantic developments, but the acknowledgement that his feelings are indeed romantic is still more than you’d normally expect from a non-BL
It’s not full-color like Cool Doji Danshi, it’s a regular b&w manga, which felt a little weird tbh, but the art is still beautiful. The first volume focuses more on the male students and not always knowing if someone on the net is who they say they are, starting with the titular net-generation teacher, Ueda-sensei, having a photo of him dressing as a schoolgirl when he was 20 being used as the profile pic of a twitter account and one of his students falling for her. The second volume focuses more on the female students and unrequited love, including the childhood friend of the gay character who’s liked him since they were small and always assumed they would date. I dunno if I’m doing a good job of selling it, but I felt the topics were handled well, and I really enjoyed it.
Also, Ueda-sensei looks quite a bit like Mima lol I think Nata-sensei might have a type
This has an English translation (it’s under the English subtitle and it doesn’t have the last 16 pgs of ch 9 though) so I def recommend checking it out! (although I haven’t checked out the translation myself so I can’t guarantee the quality, only of the story) At least part of it is on Nata-sensei’s pixiv too (though in Japanese, of course)

So, my Japanese isn't great, but I wanted to try to clarify something on here that Google Translate isn't capturing, namely from this part: Saying that there are two types of gates and then defining them both as "Power to bring" doesn't make sense in English. Why make a distinction between the two if you're gonna define them the same way? But in the Japanese, it's not quite the same words used for both: "持ってくる力" (motte kuru chikara) vs. "持っていく力" (motte iku chikara. 力 (chikara) just means "power," so we'll set that aside for now since that part is actually consistent across both items. 持って (motte) is also consistent across both items. This means "carrying" or "holding," like you'd hold a bag or a purse or a backpack or something that you're taking around with you. The big difference is between くる (kuru) and いく (iku). These are actually the kana (phonetic) versions of two kanji characters: 来る (kuru) - to come 行く (iku) - to go That provides us with a nice little pair of opposites, and changes our literal definitions as follows: 持ってくる力 (motte kuru chikara) - Power to come carrying 持っていく力 (motte iku chikara) - Power to go carrying So... they're both kinda "power to bring" but it would be more accurate to say one brings and one removes. Or, if you're feeling dramatic, one giveth and one taketh away.

Ent, Treebeard of Fangorn forest - Tree Guardians in literature
Ents are a species of beings in J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy world Middle-earth who closely resemble trees. Their leader is Treebeard of Fangorn forest. Their name is derived from an Old English word for "giant".
The Ents appear in The Lord of the Rings as ancient shepherds of the forest and allies of the free peoples of Middle-earth during the War of the Ring. At then, there are no young Ents (Entings) because the Entwives (female Ents) were lost. Akin to Ents are Huorns, whom Treebeard describes as a transitional form of trees which become animated or, conversely, as Ents who grow more "treelike" over time.
The Old Forest, Tolkien's fictional world of Middle-earth, was a terrifying ancient forest beyond the eastern borders of the Shire.
Treebeard, called by Gandalf the oldest living Ent and the oldest living thing that walks in Middle-earth, is described as being around 14 feet (4 m) tall:

During most of his own life conservationism was not yet on the political agenda, and Tolkien himself did not directly express conservationist views—except in some private letters, in which he tells about his fondness for forests and sadness at tree-felling. In later years, a number of authors of biographies or literary analyses of Tolkien conclude that during his writing of The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien gained increased interest in the value of wild and untamed nature, and in protecting what wild nature was left in the industrialised world.
Nearly 100 years after Tolkien's time, the destruction of forests, trees and nature continues unabated. Moreover, because of the historical background, I could not believe my eyes when I saw several WWI war photography in his biography. The clothing, background and even the tactics are almost identical to the ongoing war photos. The only difference appears to be in black and white or colour.
It is obvious that human society has made little progress in more than 100 years. In the face of the whole universe, a century is probably just a fraction of a second. Alternatively, there is a good chance that what we think of as evolution may actually be degeneration.
After all, it may just be a bunch of half-monkeys who are conceited and not knowing their places. We should realise this and learn from other creatures who do not go against nature. Don't get caught up in what you can see, but don't forget that there are things you can't see.

In the movie, you can see the trajectory after embarking on a solo career, but if you look back on your career as a solo artist and list three turning points to the present, which come to mind?
Ooh, that's a great question. I'll try to answer intuitively. Well, I wonder what kind of words will come out of my head... First of all, when I appeared in "X Factor" and performed for the first time (solo debut song "Just Hold On") with Steve Aoki. At that time, it was a difficult time (*) for me personally, and I was quite overwhelmed. So when I finished that stage, I felt like my fear had been dispelled. I don't think there was a more painful performance than that time. It was the moment when I told myself that I could do it even in extreme situations.

If I hadn't written these two songs on the first album, I don't think "Faith In The Future" would have turned out like it is. These two songs gave me the confidence that I could make the music I wanted to.
The third turning point was the tour last year. I love tours, but I've also felt uneasy for many years. "I wonder what my show will be like?" " Can I do the show by myself?" I worry like that. So I became confident after I was able to tour last year, and there were wonderful audiences that boosted that confidence. If I were to name the most recent turning point, it would be touring.
In the movie, you cite songwriting as the most personal pride that you achieved through your activities in One Direction. Now that you are in your 7th year of starting your solo career, what do you feel proud of as a solo artist?
There are several, but I’ll mention "Faith In The Future". Without a doubt, this is an album that I've always wanted to make. I have that sense of accomplishment that I was able to make what I really wanted to make while working as a solo artist for several years.

And there's nothing I'm more proud of than the connection with my fans. I think every artist says that the connection with fans is special, and I'm sure that's right, but the connection between me and my fans is really special. Some of the fans have been supporting me since I was working in One Direction. It's like we've grown up together. There is a bond in the true sense. The bonds should be felt by the fans as well as myself. You can feel that kind of bond at the show.

Overall, what inspired me was the live performances I did before I started working on this album. As for the title, when I listened to the first album "Walls" again, I thought it was "hmm" myself, but it was emotionally heavy. I wanted to shake that off. When I look at the title at a glance, I want to make people feel hope and positivity. I thought the title "Faith In The Future" was a title that feels hopeful, isn't it? It set the tone for the whole album. Of course, the album touches both light and shadow, but I think it reflects my current emotions and positive feelings about life.
In relation to positive feelings, when I asked questions from fans for the interview, one said, "I sometimes think negatively, but what do I do to change to positive thinking?" Please let me know if there is anything you are doing to make you feel positive.

First of all, I want you to remember that emotions are personal, so the ways to deal with them is also different. On top of that premise, how I'm dealing with it, to be honest, I can't say exactly. I didn't fight like a warrior, and I didn't feel sad all the time. Of course, sometimes I do get depressed, but I forget it the next day. I think it's a lucky thing because I can overcome it without thinking about it too much. I don't know why, but maybe it's the way I was raised when I was a child. In any case, fortunately, I'm not the type to keep worrying.
But if you can confide in someone, you’ll see that communication has incredible power. I've always been saved by kind people and kind families around me. It means having the courage to reveal your feelings. Sometimes it's hard to talk about them, but when you confess your feelings, you don't feel as bad. You'll always feel better. If you were to name the song of "Faith In The Future" that you’re most looking forward to performing on the Japan Tour, which song is it?
I did some shows when I released the album, so I've already played some songs from the new work, but I'm looking forward to "Saturdays" among them. For some reason, when I sing this song, my heartfelt emotions come up. It's a song that has already been performed about 4 or 5 times, but I want to sing it many times from now on. And so is "Out of My System" as well. If you listen to it, I think you can imagine how exciting and fun the performance will be. So I'll mention that song too.
What about the songs on the album that I haven't played yet? There are some songs that can be said to be relatively suitable for dancing. I'm looking forward to seeing how such songs like "All This Time" and "She Is Beauty We Are World Class" work in the set list. In the album, they were songs that weee produced while being conscious of making the sound wider. I'm also looking forward to seeing how such songs complement more guitar-based songs.
Do you have any memories that have left a particular impression on your visit to Japan so far?
This is my memory, maybe the fans will say, "You didn't do that!" I might be told that. But in my memory, I remember when we performed "Story Of My Life" for the first time. I chose Japan as a place to perform this song because the Japanese people had sincere respect as an audience. If I did the performance I'm going to describe in England, I'm sure they would scream or shout something toward the stage, but we performed "Story Of My Life" live in Japan a cappella (*). I think that was a performance that could not be realized outside of Japan. It was a magical moment. Japan is the first time we performed in such a way. That performance in a cappella was the best moment. It's the memory of a lifetime.

Stanley Kwan 關錦鵬 is not only a famous director from Hong Kong, but also the first well-known openly gay figure in Hong Kong entertainment. He came out of the closet in 1996 (before Leslie Cheung, who did so in 1997), in the documentary he directed for the British Film Institute named Yang ± Yin: Gender in Chinese Cinema 男生女相:華語電影之性別. His works had garnered accolades for their in-depth portrayal of female characters, at the time when women in local movies often did little more than being pretty and screaming a lot.

Most BL fans know Director Kwan via his gay-themed film Lan Yu 藍宇 (2001), about the eponymous Bejing university student falling in love with a wealthy, closeted businessman, Chen Handong. The film, based on a popular online novel Beijing Story 北京故事, has remained censored in mainland China for its queer content and its mentions of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre. Its fate of being perennially censored was never a surprise—the film was shot in Beijing in secret, with the crew pretending to be shooting commercials around the capital. Digital filming also didn't exist then, and so the 100,000 ft + of film had to be smuggled out of China later to be developed.

In 2022, Lan Yu celebrated its 20th anniversary with a 4K remastered version. Among the interviews of Director Kwan made for the celebration was one by The Initium 端傳媒, during which Kwan shared some of his views on Lan Yu, in the context of how public reception of queer media has changed over the years after the film's release.
These views may deviate from what some fans, especially those in BL circles, would expect. Precisely because of that, however, I'm posting them here. After all, maybe, hopefully, Kwan will collaborate with Dd (and Gg) one day. Maybe, fans like ourselves will interact with Kwan on social media spaces one day.

2. 在《藍宇》面世的年代,電影確實意識大膽。但二十年後,當電影得以重新修復,社會氛圍其實亦有了翻天覆地的轉變。近年不但多了同志題材的作品,甚至大行其道,人人消費,成為一種時令的商業元素。譬如人氣男團會拍 BL 電視劇,而過去幾年的華語電影節,最快售罄的場次,都一定是同志電影。 此情此景,在《藍宇》剛上映的年代簡直不可思議,電影當年在香港的票房談不上亮眼,普羅大眾對同性戀故事有所抗拒,而本身就是同志的觀眾,想看卻不敢購票入場,怕被旁人標籤。二十年後世界變了樣,甚至總會看到「腐女」在 BL 電影的宣傳海報前打卡拍照。關錦鵬笑說:「是呀,前陣子的確有朋友跟我說,她其實是一名腐女。腐女族群喜歡看男同志電影,但到底喜歡看什麼呢?她某程度上都承認,想看的就是身體,是兩個好看的男人身體如何做愛。」 然而,這恰恰就是他當初對執導《藍宇》有所卻步的顧慮。當同志題材今日已走入主流,變成一種受歡迎的商業元素,關錦鵬則仍然有所警惕,跟潮流保持距離:「可能有些腐女都會喜歡《藍宇》,但我想未必完全是她們那杯茶。它真正要說的是兩個男人從色情買賣演變成一段感情關係,尤其是魏紹恩替我改編劇本之後,陳捍東這個角色,在我看來不一定是男同志,而是他在藍宇身上找到一些連自己都不知道的感覺。」 但關錦鵬也承認,從好的方向去看,在 BL 作品蔚然成風的助力之下,至少令同志以及 LGBT 性少數族群,相對容易被今日的大眾主流接受:「這是令人開心的。近幾年,特別是年輕人,確實會用比較開放的態度去對待 LGBT 族群。」稍頓,關錦鵬解釋道:「換個說法,關於 LGBT 議題的重點,現在就不再放在色情之上,而更多是感情關係,甚至是性少數族群認清自己身份之後,於生活上如何面對社會。那起碼是朝著一個正確的方向。」 In the era when Lan Yu was released, the film was indeed bold in its ideology. [Pie note: The reporter was unlikely to be referring to Gg and Dd with their mention of "popular boyband members". Instead, they were probably thinking of Edan Lo and Anson Lo from Hong Kong's local boyband MIRROR, who starred in the BL drama Ossan's Love.]  
This phenomenon is unbelievable in the era when Lan Yu was first released. The box office of the film in Hong Kong couldn't be said to be impressive. The general public resisted gay stories [Pie note: Hong Kong hadn't decriminalised homosexual relationships until 1991, 10 years before], and the audience who were gay wanted to watch it but didn't dare to purchase tickets, for fear of being labeled by others. Twenty years later, the world has changed -- BL fans can be seen photographing themselves in front of the promotional posters of BL movies.
Kwan smiled and said, "Yes, a friend told me a while ago that she's actually a "rotten woman" (Pie note: = woman BL fan, translated from the Japanese term fujoshi). The "rotten women" group likes to watch gay movies, but what do they like to watch? She admitted, to a certain extent, that it's the body. It's the body, how two good-looking men's bodies make love."
And yet, this was precisely the concern that made Kwan hesitant to direct Lan Yu at the beginning. As gay themes enter the mainstream and become a popular commercial element, Kwan has remained vigilant, and has kept his distance from the trend: "Maybe some "rotten women" enjoy Lan Yu, but I don't think (the film) is entirely their cup of tea. What the film really wanted to express was how two men evolved from a transactional sex relationship to an emotional relationship, especially after Wei Shaoen adapted the script for me. The character of Chen Handong, in my opinion, didn't necessarily have to be a gay man; instead, he found on Lan Yu a feeling that even he himself couldn't understand.”
But Kwan also admitted that, from a better perspective, with the aid of popular BL works, it has become relatively easy for gays and LGBT sexual minorities to find acceptance in today's mainstream: "This is a happy thing to see. In recent years, especially young people have indeed treated the LGBT community with a more open attitude.” After a short pause, Kwan explained: “In other words, the focus of LGBT issues is now no longer on salacity, but more on emotional relationships, and even, on how sexual minorities face society in their daily lives after recognising their (sexual) identities. At least it's moving in the right direction.”

guide to find the Spicy shiguang fanart
i need y'all to know this is a huge character development moment for me (a couple years back i would be so scandalized to be even talking about this lmao)
anywho. couplea people were talking about how there's not a lot of uhh...raunchier shiguang fanart out there. as a consumer of All The Shiguang Content I Can Get My Grubby Little Hands On, I am here to inform you that uh. yeah it sure is out there. there's not like a TON of it, but that's because the fandom overall is small. it's largely in the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean side of things-- haven't seen a lot of western fans making it actually. It's largely on Twitter, but even then, you're not gonna find anything explicit over there, people tend to link the explicit stuff on their twitter to another website. something like poppiku? I forget what it's called.
Without further ado...
option 1: tag name! on twitter you can search for the tag name specifically and comb through art that way. your options are shiguang (though this is largely limited to just the English-speaking side of things, I feel), 光时 (think this is the Chinese shipname), 程光 (uuuh I think this is the Japanese side? not 100% actually lol), ヒカトキ, and トキヒカ. Those last two are from the Japanese side of things, and fair warning, it seems that in Japanese fandom, the order of the names actually denotes the top/bottom dynamic (so there's Hikatoki and Tokihika; in the Hikatoki, Hikaru is top (Lu Guang) and in TokiHika Toki is top (Cheng Xiaoshi). In western fandom we don't seem to put as much of an emphasis on this, though I'm no expert. It's not a hard-and-fast rule though I feel like, I've definitely seen art under both tags where it doesn't seem so important, and at least one that was tagged with one of those shipnames but was explicit about them switching, iirc. Either way, using ANY of these tags up there you're not going to find any explicit art-- if you DO, it'll be a censored preview, and then through the tweet there'll be a link to another website. A lot of times they have you enter a "password" which is just you typing "yes" in the field (because it wants to know if you're over 18). Though they can change up the password thing-- I had one ask the combined weights/heights (I forget) of LG and CXS lol.
option 2: find a fanartist you like on twitter and just scroll through their "media" page (so it's only showing you pictures they've posted. This does include things besides just fanart, and ofc it can include art from other fandoms, but). I've been doing this a lot lately. Just scrolling through my recents, here's some fanartists I like:

EDIT: credit to @canonicallyautistic for this bit of advice: for the Japanese on-screen text, you could use an optical text recognition plugin so you can machine translate doujin quickly (they use Capture2Text for Japanese, but don't know which good ones are out there for Chinese). Thank you!

And while I don't speak Japanese (so I'm going to have to use Google Translate for this, so take everything you read here with a grain of salt because it may be skewed by mistranslation), there was some fantastic art and really cool concepts shared, and I want to archive anything Trigun-related. Lao Tzu's best translation annotated by Tamaki Ogawa (Essay)

I am not ashamed to claim that Lao Tzu is the best book in the universe. This is an essential book for the world of the future. Legend has it that Lao Tzu was Confucius' senior, but it is reasonable to think that he was written much later than Confucius, in the 200s B.C., around the time of Mencius, and was written after knowing various ideas of ancient China. I guess it was. It is the culmination of ancient Chinese thought.
In areas where Chinese characters are cultured, such as Japan, China, and Korea, there is the advantage of being able to read Lao Tzu in its original text. This is something that Westerners cannot do and is a privilege of East Asians. Among them, the translation and annotation of Lao Tzu by the Japanese Chinese scholar Tamaki Ogawa is unrivaled. By the way, Tamaki Ogawa is the younger brother of Hideki Yukawa, a Nobel Prize winner in physics, and Hideki Yukawa was also familiar with Lao Tzu.
Let me point out the excellent points of Tamaki Ogawa's translation and annotations.
1) Accurate and easy-to-understand translation notes.
2) He boldly incorporates the views of Arthur Waley, a British researcher on Lao Tzu that other Japanese translators and annotators ignore, and makes his annotations solid and valid.
3) The explanation about ``proper nouns'' in the notes made me realize the fact that ``Lao Tzu hardly ever uses proper nouns,'' and I learned about Lao Tzu's careful ability to construct sentences. This is a clear departure from the Bible, which overuses proper nouns and tends to cause unnecessary conflicts.
4) The writing gives a sense of Lao Tzu's passionate soul.
For now, I will mention these four points. Tamaki Ogawa is a top-level Lao Tzu commentator.

私は、「老子」を宇宙最高の書と主張して恥じない者である。これからの世界に必須の書である。老子は、伝説では孔子の先輩にあたるが、実際には孔子よりずっと後の時代、紀元前200年代、孟子の頃に書かれたと考えるのが妥当で、古代中国の諸思想を知ったうえで執筆されたのだろう。古代中国思想の集大成なのだ。
日本、中国、韓国などの漢字文化圏では、「老子」を原文で読めるというメリットがある。これは欧米人には中々出来ないことで、東アジア人の特権である。中でも日本の漢学者:小川環樹による「老子」訳注は、他の追随を許さないものがある。ちなみに小川環樹は、ノー��ル物理学賞受賞者の湯川秀樹の実弟で、湯川秀樹も「老子」に詳しかった。
小川環樹の訳注の優れた点を挙げてみよう。
正確で解りやすい訳注。
日本の他の訳注者が無視しているイギリスの老子研究者:アーサー・ウェイリーの見解を大胆に取り入れ、その訳注を強固で妥当性のあるものにしている。
注にあった「固有名詞」についての解説で、「老子にはほとんど固有名詞が出て来ない」という事実を認識させられ、老子の周到な文章構成能力を知った。固有名詞を乱用し、要らぬ争いの元となりやすい聖書とは一線を画する。
老子の熱いソウルを感じさせる記述になっていること。
とりあえず、この4点を挙げておく。小川環樹は、最上級の「老子」解説者だ。
