hi!! since you don't tag much have you ever considered just making like sideblogs for each fandom or something? i know you're multifandom but i followed for the ironstrange content, just a suggestion i don't mean to criticize or something ;;

There's quite a load to unpack here, but I know you mean no harm, anon. So let me just clear this up: first, I'm gonna assume you're new here. Not on my blog, but like, the entirety of tumblr. Because there are countless of blogs out there (multifandom ones) that tend not to tag their posts and post from different fandoms. And I'm not sure if you know, but you can easily filter out tags from fandoms you don't wanna see; I don't need to tag my reblogs for that, if OP already has those tags in the post it'll filter itself out. (There should be an option for tag filters in your settings.) In this case, here's some fandoms I've recently been fixating on that you may want to filter out if you only wanna see the ironstrange stuff: - BBC Sherlock (long-term hyperfixation) - Good Omens - Spiderverse (although this one's still marvel, but thought I'd include it anyway) - Dead Poets Society - Baldur's Gate 3

And I haven't finished watching Heartstopper, and courtesy of a friend I'm going to start watching the live action One Piece soon, so I may or may not go on a reblog spree soon for those two. Consider filtering those out as well.

Second, as you know, I've mentioned very clearly in my blog desc and intro post that I'm a multifandom blog and I tend to jump between one fixation to another. I even said I go on reblog sprees a lot of times. So you should already be warned before following me.

Third, this is my blog. I get to do whatever the hell I want with it. If I wanna make it my dumpster, I'll make it my dumpster. If I wanna make it neat and organised, I'll make it neat and organised. If I wanna spam shitposts in it, I'll spam shitposts in it. Followers are not entitled to think that me or my blog is a content peddler--like accounts in, say, TikTok--and if you think my *personal* blog that I made for *myself* and *my enjoyment* should be catered to your liking, then I'm afraid you're wrong. And besides, I like the way I'm running my blog right now. It's not neat in any way, or convenient for any other person, but I like the way it is.

Until I read the comments on that one post I had no idea the Bechdel Test was a joke and wasn't supposed to be a serious measuring stick by which you gauged if something was feminist or not. Everywhere I'd ever heard it brought up, it was brought up as a very serious thing, and it was a failure of media if it didn't pass it. I remember the debate about Mako Mori from Pacific Rim and if she was a character you were "allowed" to like as a progressive person despite the fact that Pacific Rim doesn't pass the Bechdel Test, the discourse, the discussion of if the director was sexist for not writing in another woman for her to chat with about non-men related stuff, the camp of people trying to insist that having a fully realized character arc and being as developed as any of the male leads = good writing even if she doesn't talk to another girl...

And I've also had the remark about my writing not passing the test, just not to my face. I searched my fanfic's name once, curious to see if anyone was discussing it outside of tumblr and AO3, and found a Tiktok complaining about it not passing the Bechdel Test. The top comment was "motherfucker YOU don't pass the test but we still watch your ass". I cackled and moved on, but neither the commenter, poster, nor I had any awareness this wasn't Feminist Media Critique 101 theory and was, in fact, a goof.

Right now there's a segment of fandom debating if Blue Eye Samurai is feminist since when Mizu and Akemi talk, they do bring up men, since, y'know. Women aren't considered people with rights in their era in Japan and thus it's something they mention instead of only talking about being cool girlboss badasses who never bring up gender. If something doesn't pass the Bechdel Test, a smug segment of the internet high-fives itself and congratulates one another on being More Feminist Than Thou.

They then get really angry if you disagree, even though by this metric, Sleeping Beauty (the original animated one, where Aurora has only 16 lines of dialogue) is more feminist than Blue Eye Samurai.

Dykes to Watch Out For (1983-2008) was a long-running comic and major piece of lesbian media. I grew up buying compiled volumes at the bookstore. To be honest, that kind of 90s-ish lesbian culture isn't really my scene despite me being bi, but it was very nice to have this slice of life-y somewhat realistic, occasionally somewhat parody, look at the queer communities around me. It's up there with Tales of the City for me in terms of being a window into a particular culture and time and place.

If anybody is interested in queer history, in addition to looking up factual info, I think a read of the complete Dykes would give a really good overview of how people were thinking about things and what issues came up a lot. You'll see things like Barnes & Noble increasingly putting feminist bookstores out of business in the 90s, attitudes towards porn in lesbian circles—all kinds of cultural issues of the day.

I drifted away as I got later in my teens and found more genre fiction I cared about, but at one point, this comic was a very welcome antidote to the glurgey coming out stories that made up a lot of the more realistic media.

Anyway, here's the comic itself, reproduced in its entirety because I think it's important to actually understand the context.

This is from 1985, so the era of Rambo, Conan, and Death Wish, each of which you can see being made fun of here. It's based on Bechdel's friend Liz Wallace's actual rule for seeing movies.

1) I'm a different nonnie but I loved your analysis on the dnpg comeback, but it leads into 2) what I don't understand about Dan is how YouTube stresses him out /so/ much, but how other projects don't as much? I've read his book, and I know it has to do with judgement and how hard he feels he has to pretend to make people like him (side note, I want him to write another book. I'd love Dan is Not Okay as a book even. I like his writing style), but you would think that that anxiety would translate to any public projects. 3) mildly unrelated, but when they react to pinof 4, I wonder if they're going to talk about 2012 in depth (Dan's breakdown on Tumblr, how the fans harassed Adrian, the friends they publicly fell out with between 2012-2013, just all of it) or if they're going to just react to the Pinof itself. Personally I feel like PINOF 4's energy is generally fine, but since they're focusing on controlling the narrative now, it could be interesting to use it as a possible retrospective and a way to clearly define their boundaries.

2) i think it can have something to do with the amount of things being made. if it's youtube it "has to be" many good quality and interesting videos (3-5 is already many) and youtube demands consistency if you view it as a job. youtube is also a more public place than venues or bookstores. anyone, and i mean ANYONE, can see Dan's videos on the internet for free and form an opinion, and comment, and start a discussion (good or bad). and not that many things can be erased from the internet. books also cannot be erased the moment you make it digital but it's harder to go through a book and form an actual opinion than to watch a 10-min video and form an opinion also based on Dan's face. videos are personal, it's about him. bigger projects feel more like a job and are perceived as a separate entity. it's not Dan, it's what Dan makes. also books have editors and publishers that have some kind of responsibility alongside the author. independent youtube videos? not really. switching to tours. Dan likes irl feedback a lot. maybe that thing makes it easier for him to dive into an enormous amount of physical and emotional work every tour requires. also, the tour is not Dan, it's what Dan makes and plays a role in. there is more detachment from his personality even though we know he puts his own thoughts into his shows (tatinof and ii included). Dan may also like conceptual things (i'm assuming here, i don't remember if he ever said it, he could). to build a whole world based on an idea and live in this world for a bit. like, creating a tv series or a show requires more time, more revisions, help from others, but it's also more fun to create something so big, i guess. it requires more than his youtube videos but it also gives more in return. it's like making a baby that you're so proud of and then presenting it to the world, time and time again to different people. youtube videos could also be viewed as babies but as he said, a lot of it was made to please the algorithm and to survive on youtube (paraphrasing here). he overthinks his content and because of the amount (again) it's harder with videos than 1 or 2 bigger projects that he can spend months on making. (i bet the pitching of his projects and communication in general stress him out as well. but luckily, he has managers for that). you mentioned dan is not okay as a book, and i would die to see the script of a show as it is. and the fact that it already exists blows my mind a little bit. like, give it to me!!;

3) no, they won't talk about 2012 uneasy times. honestly, i'm gonna be shocked if they acknowledge it in any way. Adrian is a public figure now, mentioning him is a risk. i think they will just react to pinof 4, maybe they will give a few looks @ the camera indicating that they know we know, but other than that, i really really doubt we will get any serious commentary.

any suggestions for becoming a sims based blog? I used to do it back in the hayday of sims 3 but it's been YEARS and I still absolutely love making sims, but I'm too shy and nervous to interact with the community ;;;

hi nonny! this is a complicated question that I'm not sure I'm the best person to ask lol but let me try it out. I think I'm gonna separate it into two parts for ease of reading. And sorry if it's a bit more cynical than you probably expected. I've just learned a lot i wish I had done from the start, lol. So here we go.

Sims content

Post whatever tf you feel like. If you love making sims, post the hell outta them and don't worry about what anyone thinks. There's no one perfect type of content to appeal to everyone; the community is made up of a million smaller niche ones. Editors, sim makers, gameplayers, storytellers, cc makers, etc. If you're passionate about it, you'll find people that love your posts. So don't worry too much.

Don't get too hung up on editing, if you want your pics to look "better" then use gshade/reshade and/or simple psd actions to your liking. Don't let it get stressful cos it ain't worth it. If you don't enjoy editing, don't do it at all. (I wrote more about how I edit & make it easier in this post)

Try your very best not to worry about notes. I know it's hard. Everyone wants their stuff to be seen, but when it comes to engagement on here, you're aiming for quality over quantity. A few awesome mutuals commenting on your stuff is way better than 600 silent likes. Also, having more attention sucks bc it brings the vile swamp rats out of their holes to see what shit they can stir up. The brief serotonins aint worth it. Just aim to find a few cool ppl to talk about your sims with cos thats all that matters.

If you want, find bachelor/ette or similar challenges ppl are doing and submit sims for them. And once you get some mutuals/followers, open sim requests so you can make sims for people. It's super fun and awesome to see your sims in other people's games! And you don't have to talk too much if you don't feel like it, but it's an easy way to get involved with others.

Social stuff & safety

Comment on peoples posts often if you like them. Engage with ppl. Reblog posts you see you like but don't really have any reblogs. I know you said you're shy but, this is most of the way to actual have mutuals that enjoy talking to you and comment on your stuff as well. You can just not talk if you want but it'll make it harder to have any engagement unless you're really good at edits or cc making.

Don't get involved with drama/discourse, it means nothing and amounts to nothing. If you're going to boost someone else's post, look into it first and look for evidence that it's even true before you reblog. If people hate on you in your inbox, block the anon and don't respond even to laugh at them. Block anyone that gives you bad vibes. They look at you funny, breathe wrong, use a color you don't like. Block. If anyone tries to start shit with you, block & completely ignore them & don't comment on it. It hurts, but there's nothing you can do about it, and people will move on if you ignore them.

Don't reveal any personal info about yourself on here or to anyone in DMs. Don't use your real name. Don't have anything connected to your other socials. Don't trust anyone on here with your vulnerable emotions, past trauma, etc. And don't say anything in DM you wouldn't feel comfortable with everyone else on the internet potentially seeing.

If you pledge to people on patreon, be aware that your email will show up on their end when you do. Dont use your real name as your patreon username.

If simblr is causing you stress, you feel like your mental health is suffering, take breaks. Log off or delete the app for a while.

I talked more about Funk Hole in this post but, because I'm procrastinating and I know a lot of people here are non-UK dwellers, here's a little something about the oddly specific setting of hyper-regional South Devon.

Several years ago, I briefly lived in Torquay, in an apartment in one of those Deco villas squeezed in along the cliffline of what was once called the English Riviera. (If that sounds glamorous, it wasn't; I was technically unhoused and commuting to postgrad five days a week. Also, Torquay was full of Scottish heroin addicts struggling terribly thanks to local councils abusing a loophole in quotas/housing exchanges, and the methadone clinic Could Not Cope. It was a thing at the time. Local govt. was - allegedly - corrupt af.)

On the plus side, I got to do my commuting on the Tiny Train which, while horribly overcrowded because it was a local branch line service that never had more than two carriages, did go via the much-beloved Dawlish Sea Wall.

For non-UK people who are enchanted by our weird little place names and quaint bassackwardness, this is the section of train line that provides the only rail access linking south Devon and the entire county of Cornwall to 'the mainland' (i.e., everything north of Plymouth). It runs through places with names like Dawlish Warren and Starcross. It looks like this:

Sometimes, you'll see a tourist get on and sit next to an open window, and someone will say, 'oh, you probably don't want to do that,' and the tourist will brush this off and think it's silly... and then get soaked. And everyone will pretend not to laugh. It's a rite of passage.

Anyway. It's a part of the country marked by an odd combination of wealth (largely from incomers and tourists) and small, relatively insular communities, where many artists and self-styled bohemians set up home in the early-mid 20th century.

The WW2 concept of/moral panic surrounding 'funk holes' was the idea that the wealthy were paying to escape the most dangerous areas of the country - particularly London and the south east - and using places like these cute country hotels and seaside villages to wait out the war.

Thing is, it's not really true. However idyllic Torquay might have seemed, the town still experienced a couple of dozen air raids and over 150 people were killed over the course of the war. That's really nothing next to the statistics from London, where large chunks of the city were flattened and around 20,000 civilians were killed, but it does show the south west was not untouched. The real divide was - as everywhere - money. What you could pay for, how you could use it to subvert rationing or acquire goods on the black market, and the availability of those resources in different places.

Something I'm going to be getting into in Funk Hole is this kind of inequity and what it meant: how certain things might be more available in rural areas, at the price of isolation, and how that isolation opened people up - especially if they lived lifestyles deemed 'alternative' in any way - to suspicion and potential accusations.

The way newspapers whipped up sentiment against 'funk holes' was basically another form of propaganda, a solidifying of 'Blitz spirit' sentiment, which is all well and good... except it was based on established biases and town/country stigmas, not to mention the jingoism of the period. Was that justified, when we were coming so close to losing the war, and the opposition was the literal Third Reich, which had decimated most of Europe and carried out unthinkable acts of genocide and eugenicide? Good question, and worth exploring. But that's for more self-indulgent waffle posting when I actually get onto writing the book in anything more than note form.

For now, here are some pretty 1920s-1940s glamour shots of the area local to where it's set: the beach at Babbacombe; Anstey's Cove, Torquay; the rock arch at Torquay, and Exmouth's delightfully named St. John in the Wilderness church.

And modern day Anstey's Cove, wherein there is a footpath that leads to a headland called Hope's Nose. Because of course it does.

Hello. I know this might be sudden but I feel that I can reach out to you about the whole situation with Tenoch. If you want to share this with the others, that is alright with me. I appreciate you reading my long rant.

I usually don't post things on social media because, imo, it's all a fuckin' mess that just seems to aim on seeing the souls and humanities of people. But I just have this weight that I need to get off my shoulders, especially with what I have seen these past few months. I'm not going to mention all these crazy controversies that have been happening because it is all perfectly explained to me, and if others still can't understand or refuse to understand, then the problem is them.

With that out of the way, I am just wondering of the changes going on. I know that TH has to step out of social media due to what's going on, which I don't blame him for, but I'm glad that there has been positive things happening, and I think it is due to the dedication and courage of the people who truly believe in him, as they are braver than I am to be willing to step into the battlefield for a person who has been a beacon in this dark and cruel world.

While it has been slowly getting positive for TH, as for Maldemort (yes, who shall not be named), I feel that there has been some kind of shift. At first, with the events in June, it was all chaos and hectic, which I personally think she enjoyed, probably even more than the attention she got from her acid attack and the law she wants to take credit for. But now, the attention seems to have simmered even after her recent posts about her, especially her case about her, other than the tragic death of the deputy that she mentioned. Even the news seems to have simmered down regarding her, and even when posting things about her, there is either low views with no comments or heightened views but with comments that criticized them for not reporting on her behaviors and her crimes, and it's not just TH fans, but also people who seem to be unaware or neutral about her.

This is taking longer than I thought, and I apologized for it, but I am getting to the point. The reason why I am mentioning all of this is because I am wondering if these changes going on are due to what has been exposed about Maldemort, or if people are forgetting and moving on from it, or if people either see her for whom she is or they' re bored and tired of her and attention seeking schemes. I just want to know what you guys think, because I don't knownwhat to think and I could be wrong.

Anyway, I have got this weight off my shoulders and feel lighter for now. All I hope that TH has his lawsuit ready, and exposed the narcissistic psychopath of whom she truly is because something tells me that he's almost done and he's waiting for the right time to do it. He's a very intelligent man that many people have underestimated, and I think he has stuff about her that we don't know about since he has been dealing with this for over a year. And it might reach the point that she won't be able to defend the indefensible no matter what she would say or try to manipulate in social media.

TH is way smarter than these people thought as you said and unfortunately he has been the subject of several attacks before too. Nor would she have seen coming the deluge of actual evidence-based allegations on her, and how her accusations were debunked so smartly by Tenoch supporters.

It's probably a mix of both forgetting and seeing through her BS I think. People are not fools to be played around, so yeah there's definitely both of those factors playing a role.

I think it's very wise for TH to stay away from social media. It brings more harm than good, especially in such situations. He does lurk around on IG though, although not as actively as before.

We all hope he sues the hell out of her. And can you imagine what all he possibly knows and has kept private to himself, when the public could dig out so much? Coz until then the media narrative in Mexico might favor MER as we now understand, as it is in the hands of people who dislike T rather strongly.

BUT, I just saw El Elegido is trending on Mexico! I would take that as a good signal? Great signal! Slowly but surely but he's coming back ❤️

how do you banish a demon/agressive spirit? everyone says to learn but never gives any recourses or flat out steps.

reposting this disclaimer in case you didn't see it:

nonnie, one thing: my method for exorcism is satanic in nature. i don't practice the christian OR general-heavily-popular-kinda-wiccan-flavoured method to banishing. in my experience neither one of these have worked for me bc demons are very powerful spirits, and they only manage to offend, disrespect, and piss off the demon in question and encourages it to show its power. i just wanted to post this as a warning that my method may not work for you, and if it isn't, then i suggest doing your own research (getting books on protection magic is a good start) and see what resonates with you and makes you feel powerful.

that being said, here's some precautions on banishing demons. i'm not approaching aggressive spirits, because i feel they're not comparable on a general level.

be polite and respectful, always. if you can, request it to leave first and foremost to avoid having to force it out. a common occurrence i've seen in the witchblr community is to get really, really aggressive with banishing and i'm just here to say that when it's concerning a demon, that's not gonna work for you. the reality of the situation is you are not more powerful than the demon. you're a human, and that demon is a grizzly bear. you cannot intimidate the metaphorical bear into leaving if it does not want to leave. pretending to be more powerful than the demon is just going to either make it angry, or make an example of its power. you must respect that a demon is just simply stronger than you and in most cases, will not be afraid of you in any situation.

once the demon is banished, you do not contact it again. you don't say its name, you don't write its name, you don't talk about it, it is dead to you. in my experience, demons are pretty attuned to the energy behind mentioning or thinking intentionally about them. it's part of the reason why most people think about a demon only for the demon to initiate contact soon after. that being said, if you struggle with compulsive thoughts, don't worry - intentionally thinking about them, purposefully thinking about them, putting energy into thinking about them is what they're more likely to pay attention to.

now, the banishing itself. do you know how to summon a demon? because you're gonna need to know how to summon a demon.

the reality of the situation is that christian-approaches to exorcism has never worked for me, and that's because i put zero power into believing that calling up an angel's boss is just not going to work. yes, god is powerful. no, a demon has never cared about me calling up the neighbour store's boss when they work at their own store. you want to contact their boss. they are an employee of their own unique store owner and that's who you want in this situation, because it's their store owner that's responsible for their payments, job, and experiences.

what am i saying with this? i genuinely believe satan, lucifer, or a king that governs over a lot of demons will be much more effective in banishing the demon. that's who they pay attention to! that's who they respect the most! it just makes sense to me, and thus, because it makes sense to me, that gives the banishing power.

now, the part that's homework for you: look into satan, lucifer, or a king who resonates with you. bond with them some, talk to them about your issues. i'm not going to order you on the 'correct' method on how to summon them (as it's different for everyone), but if you can't think of any methods/aren't used to these methods, a very general suggestion is lighting an appropriately-coloured candle (satan loves red or black, lucifer loves white or yellow, and kings have yet to turn away a gold candle for me), lighting some appropriate incense, giving them an offering of food or drink, and playing their enn (i've also seen people recently practice latin-based summoning if an enn isn't for you) and praying to them during. again, get personal with it! cry to them if you need, request their help on a personal level. they will hear you out.

Hello you two! Apologies if something similar has been asked in the past, but I would love your advice on how to continue feeling connected to your long distance partner when both people are going through times of stress.

My partner and I have been together for nearly 8 months (long distance the whole time, but we have been able to see each other quite regularly which has been a huge blessing). He’s based in California and I’m in New York, so it’s quite the distance while still being in the same continent. Currently, we’re both dealing with extremely stressful situations in our individual lives, so neither one of us is able to be as present for each other as usual. I completely understand that this does happen from time to time, but I’ve been struggling with a lack of connection. Do you have any advice on how to bring this up with him or on ways to remain connected even when we’re both struggling?

I love him so much, and I know he does too. I feel that what we have is really special, so I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make it work. But any advice would be majorly appreciated, and thank you in advance. <3

Thank you so much for your question! 💕 Benny and I actually talked about this ask all morning as we had breakfast, it was a bit more on the difficult side because we had a new question for every bit of information you gave. Since the answer turned really long, I'll continue under the cut.

Our greatest debate sprouted around the following sentence of yours: "(...) but I've been struggling with a lack of connection." So this is where I'll start. You're asking for advice on a relationship issue, and yet you've used singular first person pronouns. Now this could have been a mistake, but you've said the same thing in the beginning too. So what we think the issue here is very simple - communication. Or a lack thereof. You need to tell your partner exactly what you've just told us, because he needs to know and you need to talk about it. If he loves you and doesn't want to lose you, he'll be more than happy to try and compromise to meet your needs better. Try to bring this up at the least stressful moment possible though, because when you're both at your worst, then the best way to connect in our experience is just to show up for each other (i.e. videocall) and distract each other.

Try being assertive. Do not point fingers. Tell your partner how you are feeling. For instance: "Lately I've been feeling a little alone because of our lack of communication. I don't blame you, because I know you're really stressed as well lately, but I'd like to feel closer to you. Do you think we could talk more?" (If your partner has an anxious attachment style or doesn't like conflict, reassure him immediately and tell him that you love him and you're not accusing him.)

Being transparent and open about both the comfortable and the uncomfortable things is a practice you might want to integrate into your relationship, as well as the practice of showing up for each other (i.e. reassurance of love, questions about their day and mood). I understand it's very difficult if you've fallen out of practice with this, because right now you're both in a rough patch, but if you can get into this habit now, then you'll always stay in it.

As for the things that stress you out, you need to work on them. You need to have a solution planned, even if it's a very long term solution. If you think it affects your relationship, you need to talk about it, and I cannot stress this enough. Having a plan in motion already alleviates some of the additional stress your problems have on your relationship (i.e. I didn't get better immediately when I started therapy, it took me half a year, but I was doing it and to some extent that mattered as well).

And as a bottom line, here's a little reminder. Communication is a two-way street. A relationship is a two-way street. You can never feel connected to someone unless they want you to feel connected to them.

We hope you'll both feel closer to each other soon. We can tell how much you love him, and we hope he loves you back just as much. 💕

Oh Nonny, honestly you are just way too kind. I really don’t know what tips I can give because honestly, I don’t really know what I’m doing but I shall try. 😅

Writing absolutely is not my day job (far from it) and I have no formal training in it. I just kinda muddle my way through. I really appreciate your kind words though, so I’ll try and share some things I’ve found helpful in my fanfic writing journey.

Write - yep, it’s boring and you hear it all the time but practice makes, well, better. Week to week, month to month, and year to year I see improvement in my writing and so much of that is down to writing… just writing. Not all of it is fit to be seen, but challenging myself by writing often (I try to write something ever day, even if it’s just a thought or a line of dialogue that strikes me) honestly feels like the number one way my writing has improved over the years.

Actively reading stuff I enjoy. So if a fic or a piece of media really grabs me, makes me feel emotional and captivated I try and dissect that. What about it caught my interest? Was it the the character development or the descriptions, world building or how the creator built atmosphere and tension? It’s not about trying to emulate a work you admire, but learning what about it you like and enjoy and seeing how you can adapt that to your particular style.

Writing what you want to read. For me this is a major thing. I write the stories I am interested in. I fundamentally write for me, and so it’s easier to focus and get drawn in by a story because I want to see how it ends. It’s absolutely wonderful if other people are interested in what I write (and publish… coz a lot of it sits on my hard drive…) but I’d still be writing regardless, because I want to know how everything works out.

Try and find fandom friends to be unhinged with. Absolutely easier said than done but if you can and you’re that way inclined, then finding some fandom crazies can be so helpful. I have no idea how many stories I’ve written based off a random “hey guys, can you imagine-” comment that got enabled all to hell. (Hello, enablers!!!)

Have fun! Honestly, this is the most important thing about being a fan writer for me. I’m here to grab my blorbos and throw them into situations and get them out of that situation. I’ve done it repeatedly and I’ll do it again. Coz it’s fun. Because I’m enjoying myself. And I won’t lie, the wonderful community we have, the amazing friends I’ve made and have blast with, the support and kindness I get is beyond description but I’ve been playing in various sandboxes for years (mostly by myself) and I’ve still the most fun exploring my imagination and creativity.

I’m sure other, more articulate and well studied people have far better and more useful insights (there’s legit so much writing advice on YouTube) but those are my random thoughts on the subject. If anyone has something they’d like to add, please do! Because I am absolutely always open up to tips and insights myself. You can never stop learning ☺️

Glad you’ve found my YJ writing critiques interesting. 

The reason why I haven’t commented on Young Justice: Phantoms (or the final Targets comic) is that I haven’t watched it, haven’t read a synopsis and have no plans to ever do so.  My interest in the series went pretty cold as far back as Invasion but at the time I was willing to give the showrunners good faith on their claims that they had a plan to bring things together and that the problems were mostly production issues.  However, after how bad Outsiders was (and having seen similar awfulness from Greg Weisman in other franchises) I don’t have any good faith or trust left to give them.

I talked at length about how Outsiders left the show with no compelling narrative as part of this big Invasion breakdown (grumpier TL:DR version here), but here are the most relevant sections:

In terms of the Central Conflict, the Light are proved utterly correct: by Outsiders the Original Team are callous, hollow husks of their former selves, who have replicated a worse version of the same status quo the Team originally formed in response to. Dick, Kaldur and M’gann’s Anti-Light are a new upper echelon of older heroes who keep even more secrets from the next generations, who exclude the new generations far more strongly from knowing their plans, who give them even less reason to trust or communicate with them, and who do so for less just, less honest and less narratively justified reasons than their own mentors’ understandable (if condescending) desire to shield the proteges from the parts of the Life they may not yet have been equipped to face. Not only that but their constant lying with the intent to control others, and refusal to hold themselves accountable for those actions goes directly against both the League’s stated heroic ideals of “Truth, Liberty and Justice” and Red Tornado’s conclusion that caring is “the human thing to do”. By the end of Outsiders, even the existence of the Team itself is undone; decommissioned into the exact kind of safe training space that the Season 1 characters were desperate for it never to be. […] With Outsiders, any actual narrative set by Young Justice Season 1 is over. By their own standards the Team have lost, and lost entirely.

The meta-narrative of Young Justice Animated is that of a show that started with a promising initial season and strong sense of narrative identity, only to discard every part of that identity.  With Invasion the show discarded its original characterisations, themes and ideologies; replacing them with contradictory and often antithetical ones.  Outsiders would then shed even the surface trappings of its aesthetic (in favour of the more generic “modern DC” art-style) and mission-based narrative structure.  There is nothing left, save for some superficial proper nouns and call-back references: the textbook definition of an In Name Only Sequel.

I didn’t bother with Phantoms (and am frankly a little artistically insulted by its existence) because I knew it was doomed from the start to be a narrative stillbirth.  Having actively abandoned its original identity, Young Justice was left desperately scrambling to forge a new one, by clawing at the one thing it had left: people’s nostalgic attachment to the Season 1 iterations of the cast.  But this could never work because every season since has been engaged in a performative pretense of not acknowledging the character-breaking contradictions and hypocrisies forced upon the original cast by the poor writing decisions.  Phantoms would have to thread an impossible needle: wanting to be about the “journey” of the original cast for nostalgia reasons, while not being able to acknowledge that the last two seasons (and attaché comics) have resulted in all of them either actively failing or being tragically soft-locked out of their explicit character arcs without breaking that kayfabe of performative ignorance.  And, in trying to tell a story without engaging with that story's content or how broken it had become, what would they have left but to fall back yet again on canonical filler, sidequests and references held loosely together by contrivance? 

It could only ever be a zombie-fic of itself: having long-since concluded or abandoned any remaining character or plot threads, driven forward solely by the stream-of-consciousness compulsive-writing of a production team desperate to remain present, relevant and profitable.  And from the feedback I’ve heard from the general community and fandom friends who kept watching, it seems like Phantoms did indeed pull down the curtain on that empty, directionless, hollow-automaton-filled narrative for a lot of people.

As for Greg Weisman himself, while I agree that he is a particularly poor character-writer, I will respectfully but firmly disagree that he’s otherwise decent.  I think the fact that we have to caveat “he’s a decent writer” with the condition “so long as he’s surrounded by a team of strong editors and directors to keep him from being awful” kind of reveals that he isn’t.   I also don’t really accept the premise that the main fault lies with the people around him for not stopping that.  They certainly haven’t helped but he’s a grown adult who can make his own decisions. Enablers don’t generally induce behaviours; they simply amplify or become complicit in the behaviours that are already there.

In the video Plagiarism and You(tube), Hbomberguy did a great job of laying out the difference between “honest mistakes” – which can be easily cleared up by good-faith apologies and explanations – and “dishonest behaviour” – where the person(s) is aware that what they are doing is not appropriate and falls back on reputation-protecting deflections and “non-apologies” to avoid consequences when caught.  Weisman would not so-frequently disrespect his colleagues’ work with contradictions, or write patterns of misogyny, queerphobia, casual racism/ableism and abuse apologism into his stories if he did not fundamentally feel entitled to do so, was not comfortable and in agreement with those beliefs, or did not think he could get away with it.  And the way he has routinely responded to even gentle, good-faith comments by fans expressing frustration/confusion with inconsistent characterisation/structure indicates someone who knows he has done the wrong thing but resents being questioned or held accountable.  And then we see him continuing the same behaviours.  A “decent writer” should not need an editor to hold their hand and explain why directly contracting explicitly-stated characterisation is bad practice.  A “good ally” should not need someone to tell them that disproportionately subjecting queer/non-white characters to shock-value violence, writing minority characters to be dirty/dangerous/less valid in their identities, erasing/demonising/misgendering AFAB trans and bisexual identities, rewriting strong female characters to need motherhood or men to “tell them who they are”, writing gay men to be secretly misogynistic/racist, and framing victims as being equally responsible for their abuse is offensive.  All of which he has either directly done or tacitly allowed under his lead.  Multiple times.  Across multiple series.

These are not isolated incidents of “good-faith mistakes” from a newcomer learning the ropes (if they were, it wouldn’t bother me like this).  Weisman has had multiple seasons - multiple franchises even - and decades to show himself to be the kind of sincere ally and visionary artist of integrity that myself and his fans wanted him to be… and that he has so benefited from presenting himself as.  He has chosen not to. Say what you want about their stories, but you can’t claim that marginalised creators like ND Stevenson, Rebecca Sugar, Dana Terrace and allies like Neil Gaiman didn’t push back hard against their own publishers and make a lot of careful compromises in order to tell those stories in a way they felt was respectful. Weisman is in a very privileged position, with a resume that carries a decent amount of clout. He could have held himself to the creative standards he publicly expresses; could have worked improve his craft, could have examined his own biases and actually learned from the communities his stories speak about/over.  But he didn’t – because obviously it's easier and more comfortable to keep being lazy, keep relying on his colleagues to carry him, to not question his own biases/privileges and then lie when caught.  And with the money he makes, and all the second chances and new jobs he keeps getting handed, what incentive does he have to change that behaviour? 

So, personally I don’t buy his attempts to position himself as an UwU Nice Guy Ally whose haters are taking him out of context and whose nasty publishers keep forcing him to do incoherent bigotry.  He’s a grown-up, who can own his own behaviour.  And, even with a generous reading, this is at best the behaviour of a fair-weather sell-out who is willing to abandon his principles at the slightest hint of pressure from above.  That is not what respect looks like.  I wanted to give him good faith, but in light of all this, I find I can no longer trust him to keep his word or be honest about his intentions.

This is kind of the other reason why I choose not to support or engage with YJ Phantoms (or the revival in general): on top of being utterly disinterested, I just don’t want to incentivise this kind of creative behaviour with more money or attention.  I also can’t ignore what could be a pattern where Weisman makes grand promises that he likely never has a plan or intent to fulfill, then deliberately leaves holes/timeskips/inconsistencies in his narratives in order to generate ongoing demand for separate-purchase side content which promises to “fill those gaps”… but which never does because there isn’t actually a plan to facilitate that (thus creating an endless cycle of demand and profit).  To me that cuts a little too close to the potential for a privileged creator to be exploiting their clout and the good-faith belief of their fanbase in order to grift those fans out of their time and money.  I don’t find that acceptable.

mmmaybe? like i do have a couple of ideas, but nothing too concrete. one idea involved the reader being, well, the mother of monsters and the butcher would probably become more monstrous over time because of the silent hill related plot reasons. thing is, the reader wouldn't know there were changes at all, being too addicted to the butcher's to pay attention. I'm being very vague on this one because...idk how to communicate the story yet, if at all.

the other one might involve incest though, because of the monsters the reader birthed cooperating with the butcher, under the god's order. this one is just...a concept more than anything though because tentacles are fun.

Stop writing from a place of experience? Stop putting emotion and complex issues and like… plot and conflict into your writing? “Profit off of being sick” be serious for a second. Yes, my fics are my fics (as much as they can be given they’re based on an intellectual property that I do not own) and the characters are going to be written as I see fit. I could make Frankie a senator and Mouse a brick layer and Santi is their pet hamster if I wanted to (I don't and I better not see any THOTs about this…)

And yes, as I stated before, my writing helps me delving into and decipher my own stuff in a way that makes it more palatable for me to process. Like, how much easier is it to think of a solution if your friend is struggling? It's because you're not in the thick of it - you can step back and get a greater perspective to help you work through.

Not every fic will be an emotional work out. One day, I will actually get to space and maybe then I’ll get around to telling you about that time something happened in a Burger King.

I think one of the things that makes it so hard to find new creators (that are free) is how insular paywall/early access cc creators are. I literally can't remember the last time any of them used their massive platforms to support newer creators and they only seem to reblog content that features their own stuff or other creators they're close with. They are literally only concerned about their "brand" instead of actually participating in the community that provides them with their livelihoods. If you're looking for content, you're going directly to these creators first and maybe you'll look through finds blogs if you're more invested. To a point, I understand that's how popularity works, but they could be doing so much more.

Plus, since the early access model is so popular, I do think there's a push for new creators to switch to that. You get an initial burst of engagement when you first post and then another when your content is free, instead of just posting once and getting what you get. Also, I do think there's an unspoken rule that "early access creator" = "professional". So, if you want to be taken seriously, you'll imitate what the "professionals" are doing.

I'm sorry you're discouraged trying to find new creators. It's actually insane how much damage the popularity of paywalling has done to this community.

Hey nonny, thanks for sending this and also for your sympathy! I agree with everything you said, and I'm just gonna ramble a bit in a semi related way.

I think the point you made about professionalism is especially poignant. Creating cc is less a hobby now and more a setup for your own "business". But in this marketplace, there are no standards or regulation whatsoever- and many people here are just bad at what they do in various ways. It seems as if they either have the aesthetic & business model down, but are terrible to their customers and/or make terrible product, or they make a good product but can't quite grasp how to play the "game" to work the system to its full advantage. Sometimes you get people bad at all of it, yet they still charge. Because the only consistent thing about this community at the moment is that everything absolutely has to have a price, no matter how shitty it is. And there's absolutely zero consequence for being a gigantic douche nozzle.

This is a mostly disconnected side note, but when I think about these creators, it's just unbelievably depressing. I have thought about what it would be like to try early access a few times over the years, and honestly even the thought gave me such a burst of anxiety I immediately dismissed it. Just releasing cc for free is sometimes an anxious feeling for me, I just can't imagine having to base a business around it. The thought of possibly disappointing people and not consistently providing a quality product that is worth their money is a shameful thought for me. I have gotten a few $1 donations to my patreon over the years and even then i feel bad for not being able to create cc for a while because of my mental health, and not being better at cc making in general. And yet there's people that provide the most lazy, shit items I've ever seen without blinking. Stuff they never tested that doesn't work in game, two second conversions, no hat chops, no lods, gigantic poly, etc. They don't even know how to make cc and admit to that but still charge. I think I would die of shame. I'm sitting here thinking about, do they feel guilt over it, in the back of their mind? Does the stress and the anxiety gnaw at them like it does me? Even just uploading to curseforge for me, causes a bit of anxiety, even though no one pays for it directly. But CF is just another tool to be used to most- now people use patreon, but once its unlocked, the download link leads to CF so they can double dip. So it must not be bothersome to them at all. It's difficult for me to wrap my head around.

I'm glad you mentioned the part about how insular paywallers are. But I think there's even more to this than just popularity. They do not break from their circle, except in the very rare case someone new becomes very popular and they want to do a boring collab with them, and even then it seems limited. I'm pretty sure they have a server (or multiple) where they share people's urls for the purposes of chain blocking them. They also, without a doubt, share people's personal info to one another in order to ban their accounts from their patreons (at the very least). I have witnessed this multiple times. There are several doxxing rings besides the ones that were exposed, at least one exclusive to early access creators. They don't allow new people in/trust others easily because of this. This is why I don't trust paywallers as a rule; not because I think custom content should never be monetized under any circumstances, but because the lack of standardization and consequences for privacy violations makes it unsafe.

I've read through your ask again, and it made me think of something else, so bear with me haha. But the point about how you find newer creators, and how some will go to finds blogs. The fact of the matter is that popular finds blogs have the potential to be compromised as well. I have been blocked by mmccworld ever since EA temporarily banned paywalling and I reblogged a post that had a list of people intending to continue paywalling after that, and they happened to be on that list. They were one of the more popular finds blogs in the community, but I obviously won't be reblogged by them like I was in the past. Now, this isn't that relevant anymore since they're definitely not as highly regarded as they once were, but think about tumblr's lack of algorithm & what you said about how people find newer creators. If you aren't reblogged, you aren't found. And it makes me wonder how many other creators are blocked at a finds blog's discretion. I mean, this isn't necessarily a bad thing; you can filter people how you like, for example I don't reblog from paywallers on mine, or known bigots etc. But it's something to think about, and I think is a smaller example of how simblr works. If you don't play the game and fall in line, if you question the wrong person, you won't get exposure. And to most, in our current system, exposure equals money. Of course you're going to toe the line- no one wants to be publicly shamed, or worse, have a drop in potential income.
