Buddy Daddies - Character Info Update - Official Website - Yuzuko Kurusu and Karin Izumi - SPOILERS!
This deals with some heavy spoiler stuff, so I’ll put this under a Read More!
Tumblr media
Kazuki’s wife’s name was Yuzuko Kurusu. Her first name is spelt 柚子. 柚子(yuzu) is a citrus fruit.
Tumblr media
(Image from Wikipedia)
Yuzu fruits are often associated with winter time/cold, winter months. It’s flower language is “healthy and beautiful,” “an unspoiled/unblemished person,” and “sighs of love.” (I’ll link to the Japanese page sources in the comments below, same for the above yuzu fruit image).
The second part of her name 子 (ko) means “child,” and is a commonly added to the end of female given names. Obviously, here the connection is with her pregnancy. Edit: It should be noted that 柚子 as a whole can also mean “yuzu.” I forgot to include that initially, so I’m going to edit that in now, whoops!
Some more info on her:
Tumblr media
She was 25 years old. She died after the incident while still pregnant. (Lit. while the child was still in her belly).
Tumblr media
Next up we have Karin Izumi. Her name is written in hiragana, and her last name 泉 (izumi) means “spring, fountain.” It’s safe to assume that this was Kazuki’s wife’s maiden name, so it is interesting that both his late wife and Miri and her mother all have water based last names.
Some more info on her:
Tumblr media
Age: 22 Years Old
Occupation: Student
She is Yuzuko’s younger sister and was truly happy to see her sister and Kazuki get married. She plans to study fashion abroad in France.

Sorry for the surname talk lol. I've actually been thinking of changing my original surname for Wally ( which was just his canon Japanese name) and changing it to Izumi. It means spring and it could have a double meaning. Spring: the season, what I usually associate with clean air ( not counting allergies) , spring like a fountain, and. You know. Chosen by Kyogre. Aha.
Wally Izumi does sound really cute too.

(little tired today, so instead of doing replies rn, have a lore/headcanon post that also doubles as a pride post for the OCs - explanation of name meanings and why they were chosen, if applicable)
Rio's first name is written as 莉桜 - the character for jasmine and the character for sakura/cherry blossoms. Her name can also be read as "Risa," although that mistake annoys her in its frequency. She went through a lot of potential names before settling on 'Rio,' but eventually picked it because she liked how it looked in both Japanese and in English. There wasn't a ton of significance to it outside of just enjoying how it looked and sounded. That said, it does fit decently well with her last name, since Fujioka (藤岡) is made up of the characters for wisteria and hill, continuing a floral motif. Fujioka is not her original last name, but is actually her mother's maiden name, since the uncle who adopted her is her mother's younger brother.
Izumi's first name is written as 泉水. It's a word on its own, meaning a fountain or a small pond or lake. The characters that make it up mean "natural spring" and "water," and Izumi's thinking was that a name that evoked a sort of gentle, pleasant, undisturbed fixture would help her come across as calm - this did not work. She'd also considered just choosing "Umi" with the character for the ocean, before deciding that people would make fun of her for it. Her last name, Ueda (上田), is a common last name that means "above/over" and "rice field," and likely has some connection to her family's historical livelihoods, place of living, or both.
Tsubasa's first name is written 翼 and means "wing." As a name, it can be read a lot of ways, but 'Tsubasa' is one of the more unisex ways to read it. As a cyber angel, Tsubasa naturally has digital wings, and on their skateboard, they're practically flying anyway, and thought that it was a good fit. They have an official last name in their family register, but they choose to write Saiba in katakana instead. Saiba IS a real last name that can be written in kanji, but Tsubasa writes it in katakana as a stand-in for the English word "Cyber."
Anzu's first name is written 杏子, which is the character for "apricot" and the character for "child". It can be read a variety of ways, with "Kyoko" as the most common other reading. In Anzu's case, there were two main points of importance - that her name would help people remember her, and that it would sound nice with her last name. Because her eyes are that sort of yellow-orange color, it's a good match, and if you find her eyes striking, you'll probably remember her name. Tachibana (立花) means "standing flower," and historically has associations with a particular samurai clan. In Anzu's case, her thinking was that a shorter, two-syllable first name worked best after a longer, four-syllable last name. Her stage name, Kohaku Goto XII, also typically has kanji and meanings associated with it, but, breaking with tradition, Anzu writes it in hiragana, or in English characters.
Shinobu's first name is written 志信, made up of the character for "aspiration/aim" and the character for "devotion/faith". It isn't a common way to write that name at all, but Shinobu chose it as a self-reminder to stay devoted to her goals. As Shinobu has mentioned, the ancestor who started their dojo was an orphan, and the name Yaguchi (矢口) was probably one that either he chose or was given to him, rather than his hereditary name. It's made up of the characters for "arrow" and the characters for "mouth/opening/entrance," and was likely chosen specifically in reference to the budding dojo.
Kousuke did not choose his name, which is written as 光佑, but he still tries his best to live up to it. It's made up of the character for "light" and the character for "help/assist." It's not an especially common spelling of that name, and he fairly commonly has to explain how it's read to teachers. Minami (南) is a very simple last name that just means "south."
Likewise, Kiyomi didn't choose her name, written 季世未, and is a little embarrassed about the spelling. Spoken aloud, her name isn't that unique, but the chosen characters are... pretty unusual. It's made up of the characters for "season," "world/society" and a character that doesn't have a direct meaning but can be interpreted as "still" or "even now." As such, Kiyomi has taken to writing her name in hiragana, and lying that she doesn't have kanji for it. Her last name, Kita (北) means "north" and it's Kiyomi's theory that her mom was worried she wouldn't stand out with a "plain" last name, thus leading to the unusual spelling of her first name.

20+ Japanese Names That Mean Death: A Unique or Unconventional Name – Impeccable Nest
Here are some common Japanese names that directly translate to mean "death":
Shiromi means "white beauty" but is also a play on the kanji for "white" and "death." It's an uncommon name for a girl that carries some negative connotations. Similarly, Shiho means "four direction" but uses the same kanji for death. Kuro meaning "black" is blended with the kanji for death to form Kuroi. Often this name is given simply to mean "dark" but retains deathly undertones.
Moving away from direct translations, some names imply death through their kanji components. Izumi contains the character for "spring" but paired with another kanji, it can represent "fountain of death." Taiki while meaning "great hope" combines radicals that literally break down to "big/great" and "fast/swift death." Children named Taiki are often wished a long prosperous life opposing its grim constructive meaning.
Flower names too reference mortality. Hana means flower but joined with the ka

ok ok so according to ur boo chronicles timeline u dont have anything planned post talkin shit, so now i simply must know how izumi + zukka dads happens in the boo chronicles universe 👀
omg anything for u, beau. the chad to my ryan <3
there was actually a point in time when i considered making pt 6 abt izumi coming into their lives, but then decided i didn’t want to do that. izumi 100% eventually becomes part of boo ‘verse zukka’s lives, but ending boo chronicles on ‘they obtained a child!! look at that family unit!! dads being domestic!!’ seemed a bit. uh. less interesting to me. (the current ending i have planned is more compelling to me, narratively/structurally speaking. still tbd how exactly i get there tho lol)
but ANYWAY you’re not here for that you’re here for izumi!! ursa’s cousin gets pregnant but does not want the child. z happens to be visiting ursa around when the child is born; he goes with ursa to the hospital and hears everything abt the situation. feels some kind of way abt it … later when he’s talking to s on the phone abt it he realizes, sokka, i want to ask if i can adopt her. s: yeah, you should do that. z: … are you sure? we haven’t rly, like, talked abt kids that much. s: i’m sure
so z asks, the cousin says yes. z asks the baby’s name; cousin doesn’t want to name her. z’s like, i’ll wait just in case. i want you to know that this is for-sure what you want
for the next several weeks while z and ursa and ursa’s cousin are navigating baby stuff in thailand, s’s going into a research frenzy in his and z’s apartment. calls katara and suki and yue and hakoda and bato every few hours, freaking out because how can he be a good dad if he only has, like, a month to prepare?? he hasn’t done the spreadsheets he should have been preparing for this YEARS ago. his loved ones remind him he’s insane and help him thru dialing back the spreadsheets and the parenting resources he keeps rush-ordering. when he’s awake he’s definitely freaking the fuck out but almost every night he dreams of z being very gentle and warm with this soft little thing swaddled in his arms and s always wakes with a sense of excitement
the day before z’s going to fly back home, ursa coming with him, he asks the cousin one last time if she wants to name the baby; she says no. z tells ursa, i don’t know how to name her. i still kind of feel like i shouldn’t be the one to name her.
ursa looks at the newborn, who was just shitting and screaming and crying 20 mins ago but is now sleeping peacefully on her son’s chest. it feels like an out of body moment for her. how about izumi? ursa suggests.
izumi? z asks. isn’t that japanese?
ursa: it’s what i wanted to name azula.
z: why?
ursa: childbirth was painful the first time, and i didn’t want to go through it again. i’d already given your father a son. but one day, i took you to that fountain at the end of our street, and another mother had also taken her children to play in the water. her sons were maybe a year apart, with the younger about your age. and as i watched them play together, and i saw you watching them … in that moment, i wanted to give you a sibling more than i wanted to avoid that pain again.
z: oh.
when z and ursa finally arrive back in nyc, they reach an apartment that’s been baby-proofed to high hell and a bedroom that’s been rearranged to make space for the crib that s spent half a day building. s sees his hubby holding a tiny human like he has been in s’s dreams for a month, but this time it’s real. z’s got deep bags under his eyes but he smiles so genuinely anyway. ‘want to meet your daughter?’ he asks s. ‘her name’s izumi.’

Meaning of the Characters of Slow Damage names
This post is meant to show the meanings of the kanji in their names but not expand on their characters since i don’t know what it has to do with them and their personality.
The names make sense for them if you played the game in Japanese.
After the English version of the game comes out feel free to elaborate the names, If you know how the meaning of the characters names half to do with them feel free to use this as reference.
A spoiler warning is in affect for those who didn’t play the game.
Towa
Nitro likes to use Japanese harmonious meanings in the characters names which they do several times in their writing an example of one character in particular whose name makes sense in Japanese than English is Towa.
its revealed why hes called Towa is that is In a short story it came from the Japanese "daredemo towazu” which is used as an insult to him because he would sleep with anyone regardless.
His real name is Haruto Sakuragi ( 悠斗 桜木)
His first name “Haruto" when its broken down "Haru,悠" means “permanence, much far, distant, long time, leisure” and "To,斗" means “Big Dipper from a star constellation,ladle.”.
His surname Sakuragi when the kanji started with his first kanji "Sakura" means “桜, cherry blossom" and “Gi” means “木, tree” When put together its spelled “cherry blossom tree”
Yuma Sakuragi (優真 櫻木)
Yuma Sakuragi is Towa’s mother but I can’t reveal too much about her since its spoiler territory.  the first kanji in her name “Yu,優” means “tenderness, excel, surpass, actor, superiority, gentleness” and “ma,真” means “truth”
Maya is her stage name and the kanji of her stage name is it spelled as this “摩耶” Her name came from Queen Māyā who was the birth mother of Buddha.
I don’t if this has something to do with her role in the story but I’m leaving it here for reference.
Rei Izumi (礼 泉和)
The kanji in Rei’s name “礼” means "etiquette, bow, gratitude, thanks”,rei is maybe the Japanese pronunciation of Ray this could likely allude to his mixed ancestry.
"izu,泉" means “spring, fountain” and "mi,和” means "harmony, Japanese style, peace, soften, Japan"
Takuma Murase (巧真 村瀬)
“Taku, 巧" means "skillful.” and “ma, 真” means "true.”.
His surname “Murase” , the first kanji “Mura, 村” means "village, town” and “se,瀬” means " rapids, current, torrent, shallows, shoal or fast moving water"
Kei Madarame (圭 斑目)
the Kanji in his name “Kei,圭” means "square jewel, gemstone"
His surname “Madarame,斑目" means "speckle-eye.”
Ryo Fujieda (涼 藤枝)
His first name "Ryo,涼" means "cold/cool”
His surname “Fujieda” with the first kanji "Fuji,藤” means “wisteria” and “eda,枝” means "bough, branch, twig, limb, counter for branches.” together can be read as "wisteria branch"
His real name is Yuzuki Minato(湊 柚木)
his name “Minato,湊” means “harbor” his surname “Yuzuki,柚木” means “citrus tree"
His little sisters name Mei (愛衣)when her name is broken name "me,愛” means "love.” and “i,衣” means "clothing, garment”.

1,3,22 for the OC ask :)
Thank you for the questions! i answered 3 in mintspider's ask so i'll just do 1 and 22 :)
1. What’s their full name? Why was that chosen? Does it mean anything?
Cash: Cash's name with her original family was Patricia Marie Sanders. her adoptive father let her change her name when he adopted her, and she chose "Cash" after one of her favorite musicians, Johnny Cash. she declined to have a middle name, so she's now just Cash Black(with an added "NOT RELATED TO ERRON" uttered every time she introduces herself in the Black Dragon compound lmfao).
Coco: OH BOY OH BOY OH BOY. so, Coco's full name is Corona Nova. ITS NOT ABOUT COVID AND I HATE THAT ITS A THING BC I NAMED HER THAT BACK IN FUCKING 2015 LMAO. in her culture, everyone is named after the stars or something celestial. A corona is a visible ring of light or "halo" around a celestial body, and a nova is a star that comes into being quickly and fades away just as quickly. i can't change the name bc it's too integral to who she is, and also i don't want to. it's why she has so many nicknames lmao
Calli: Calli's full name is Callisto Nova. Callisto is one of Jupiter's moons! i specifically chose it for the assonance with her sister's name and out of irony(it's one of the biggest moons in our solar system, and she's a tiny little bitty thing lmao).
Izzy: Izzy's name is Izumi Tanaka. Izumi means "fountain" or "spring" in Japanese, and i liked both the way it sounded and the fact that she's a fountain of knowledge when it comes to her specialty. Tanaka actually comes from a very tertiary character from the video game The Outer Worlds lmao.
Sai: Sai is short for her original name which was "Saiyaka", from the character Sayaka from Yu Yu Hakusho! i shortened it because i prefer it that way.
thank you again for the asks!!!!

Since y’all liked the last one
I don’t know if this is a new one or not but let’s talk Izumi.
Tumblr media
So we all know how in TLOK, it was confirmed in universe that Zuko had a kid, that kid being Izumi. Now, unlike every other Fire Lord that we’ve seen, Izumi hasn’t been confirmed to be a bender which is odd. Considering she falls in the fire nation royal family, a family of very powerful benders, it’s odd that she wouldn’t display that prowess at some point. Now, people may believe that she is just a nonbender which yeah it could be, but what if there was another reason she hasn’t shown to bend? My answer-
She’s a waterbender.
Now, you probably think I’m talking out of my ass but hear me out. Zuko’s spouse has yet to be confirmed in universe so we are free to make out assumptions about who he ends up with. The fire nation, following the hundred year war, would probably have to make reparations and fix alliances, this would lead us to the water tribes. They were the nation that was hit second hardest, after the air nomads of course. So they would need to have a member of the water tribe make nice with the fire lord so things could be put in motion. So, who would they choose?
Tumblr media
Sokka, the ‘prince’ of the Southern Water Tribe and the basically adopted son of the Northern Water Tribe. The two would work well together to help with reparations. Whether it ends up romantically or not is up for debate, but for the sake of my bi heart, let’s say they do end up getting together. The two would build back up both nations and things end up going great. However, the idea of an heir to the throne arises and Zuko can’t have a kid cause, well, he’s with Sokka. The two have to come up with an idea and Sokka returns home to discuss with Katara about it. Katara suggests adoption and Sokka is on board. However, being the impulsive man he is, Sokka just runs over to an adoption place in an Earth Kingdom and chooses a kid that resembles Zuko. Zuko, seeing this child, is immediately both angry and happy cause he now has an heir but he wished Sokka would have discussed it with him. Things seem to work out, the king has a child and the Fire Nation has an heir. Everything’s fine.
Tumblr media
(Credit to @pukotort for the amazing fanart :D)
Until the child starts displaying waterbending abilities.
Zuko starts worrying cause imagine the headlines of the Fire Nation being led by a waterbender. He can’t just let that info out cause the headlines would be everywhere. So, he decides that Izumi can practice her waterbending abilities with a private tutor, who I think Katara would fit the best for this, with the caveat that she can’t display her abilities in public. She ends up growing up into an amazing leader but her more water tribe traits get hidden. Her traditionally blue eyes are covered by colored contacts, her darker skin is covered with makeup, and brown hair gets dyed black. She ends up marrying a firebender and his son, Iroh, ends up inheriting her father’s firebending abilities. However, her daughter ends up inheriting her waterbending abilities, which is why she isn’t seen in public a lot.
Anyway, this has been me overthinking stuff, enjoy!
EDIT CAUSE AAAAAAAAA:
So, it has come to my attention that Izumi’s name has more then meets the eye. Izumi’s name means fountain or spring in Japanese. Guys, I can’t make this shit up, Izumi’s water connection is so strong yall. yALL

it is i, 🦆 anon, here to give a little info about my oc, if that’s ok.
her name is izumi (meaning ‘fountain’ or ‘spring, typically), and she’s a skilled swordswoman who's a fatui harbinger.
despite her name meaning, she’s a cryo vision user! there’s actually a reason, and she despises the hydro archon for not giving her the hydro vision she needed for her family’s approval. she despises the hydro element, hydro archon and generally hydro users, but it generally depends on the user.
— 🦆
oh wow the name of your oc reminded me of the time i liked making oc’s on other fandoms to the point i memorized all the meanings of japanese names😭😭😭 and also, my oc’s at that time were named mizumi hahahaha (i made it in a way “mizu”=water and “izumi”=fountain) so yep just sharing….
and izumi sounds great! i feel like she’s a character that’s interesting to mold🤔 with how she hated the hydro archon, it seems.

Sorry if this is something that's been asked before, but have you chosen the kanji for your characters' names? If so, can we see them?!
AAHHHH i love this question so much, thank you for asking!!
SO neoma...doesn’t have any kanji for her name because it’s not actually a japanese name. in the original version of atms, she was of a mixed background but that has changed in recent versions and i’m still trying to decide whether i’m going to change neoma’s name or go big and try to create the name with kanji myself. we’ll see how that goes...
as for takeda the kanji i use for it are  武田 ;  武 (take) meaning “military” and  田 (ta or da) meaning “rice field” !!
however! she also has a an alternate name that she goes by when she’s with the umebayashi clan!
masaru umebayashi --   勝 (masaru) meaning “victory” ! as for the family name:  梅林 ;  梅 (ume) meaning “plum” and 林 (hayashi) meaning “grove, forest.” !!
now! for the rest of the cast thus far, here we go!
shiroze takeda --    白瀬 ;  白 (shiro) meaning "white" and  瀬 (ze) meaning "swift current" ! and he has the same family name as neoma, so  武田
genkei umebayashi -- i literally cannot find the original kanji i use for this dude but his name means “to be honored” !  as for the family name:  梅林 ;  梅 (ume) meaning “plum” and 林 (hayashi) meaning “grove, forest.”
isao murakami --   勲 for isao, which means something akin to “achievement” or “distinguished service” ! for the family name:  村上 ;  村 (mura) meaning “village” and  上 (kami) meaning “up”, so upper village!
kazuyuki murakami --  和雪 ;  和 (kazu) meaning "harmony, peace, soften" and  雪 (yuki) meaning snow !! he has the same family name as isao.
akito murakami --  明人 ;  明 (aki) meaning “bright” and  人 (to) meaning “person” !! he has the same family name as isao.
rin murakami --  凛 (rin) which means "dignified, severe, cold" ! she has the same family name as isao
okemia yamasaki -- can’t find the kanji but i picked this name way back so idk, i may change her given name! however, her family name is:  山崎 ; 山 (yama) which means "mountain" and 崎 (saki) meaning "cape, peninsula" !
makoto morimoto --  誠 (makoto) which means “sincerity” ! as for his family name:  森本 ; 森 (mori) meaning "forest" and 本 (moto) meaning "base, root, origin", so something akin to “one who lives near the forest” !
kaito takahashi --  海翔 ; 海 (kai) meaning "sea, ocean" and 翔 (to) meaning "soar, fly" !! for his family name: 高橋 ; 高 (taka) meaning "tall, high" and 橋 (hashi) meaning "bridge" !!
sora matsui --  昊 (sora) which means “sky” !! and for their family name:  松居 ;  松 (matsu) which means “pine tree” and 居 (i) which means “reside with” !!
kosuke himura -- 康介 ; 康 (kō) meaning "peace" and 介 (suke) which means "forerunner, herald" ! i’ve seen a popular meaning of the name as “rising sun” and i love that, though i haven’t found the kanji to back it up/idk how they get that meaning. but that’s the desired meaning. for the family name:  緋村 ; 緋 (hi) meaning "scarlet, dark red" and 村 (mura) which means "town, village" !!
katsuo sugawara -- 勝雄 ;  勝 (katsu) meaning "victory" and 雄 (o) meaning "hero, manly" ! for his family name: 菅原 ;  菅 (suga) meaning "sedge" and 原 (wara) meaning "field" !!
izumi endo -- 泉 (izumi) meaning "fountain, spring" !! their family name is: 遠藤 ; 遠 (en) which means "distant" and 藤 (do) meaning "wisteria." !!
omg that was a lot of kanji to go through! and that’s not even all the characters yet, oop! anyway, i hope you have fun reading this!! i really enjoyed typing this out <3

Do you think Katara could secretly be the mother of Izumi? Izumi means fountain but it can also mean water..
no i don’t.
izumi specifically means ‘spring or fountain’ so in the case that zuko did want to name his daughter after katara or even sokka, (in reference to water such as ocean, rain, sea, river, even healer if we want katara specifically) there are other japanese names such as nami (surf, wave), ran (water lily), umiko (child of the sea), etc. that he could’ve chosen. but zuko does not think on his own given he’s a fictional character, so izumi being named what she is a pretty big hint from the writers as to who her mom is.

She's afraid of a lot small things and not so small things like thunder and etc. Reina is known to have quite a beauty catching a lot of boys' attention to which she's afraid of and mostly, she only start hanging out with people who she can trust.
Reina can be considered very lady-like since due to her amnesia, she can not remember where she learn them from but she is a practitioner of Aikido and basic self-defense. She has used it on boys and girls several times when they had done something embarrassing to her, (including their first meeting and etc) or annoyed her. She has also an tendency to throw them whenever they were pissing her off, to which she shouts "How dare you!". However, she apologizes to them right after. Because of this, her heart become cold as ice which changes her warm personality to a whole different level.
Reina is a mysterious girl, who doesn’t seem to wanna talk to anybody. She’s the quiet type who doesn’t say more than she needs to as she appear to be cold toward others and it’s this trait that makes others too uncomfortable to approach her. But if they give her a chance, they will realize that’s not true at all. Like some introverts, Reina needs to get to know them first before opening up to them.

And always putting her friends needs before her own. One of the things that makes Reina stand out is her fiery determination and strong will. However, Reina is lively and energetic around those she’s closest too. But is otherwise not the type to strike up a conversation with strangers. Unless she’s approached first. The fact Reina likes to smile a lot makes it easy for people to warm to her personality.
It is seems she has self-esteem as she stated that she was never confidence in herself, she view herself as weak and too small to do anything right. She is secretly very insecure because she always deams herself to be useless compared to the others. Her biggest wish is to be useful to people who she have come to cares about specially Tanjirou, most likely because she wants to repay his kindness towards her. Even though she is physically and emotionally tough, she does have moments when she acts vulnerable. *soft whispers* request for a translation of everyones names? like how riku means earth and tenn means heaven. i love name meanings and i7 is so interesting with how they do it!
Got it! 👍 tbh I’d like to know how Ainana staff named their characters bc some of them have interesting names 👀
Izumi Iori 和泉一織和 = gentle; harmonious泉 (izumi)= spring; fountain一織 (iori)= one weave/fabric
Nikaido Yamato 二階堂大和二階 (nikai)= 2nd floor堂 (dou)= temple; shrine; majestic大 = big; great和 (yamato)= gentle; harmonious**Yamato 大和 is also alternative name for the country of Japan
Izumi Mitsuki 和泉三月和 = gentle; harmonious泉 (izumi)= spring; fountain三月 (mitsuki)= March
Yotsuba Tamaki 四葉環四葉 (yotsuba) = clover; four leaves環 (tamaki) = ring; circle; loop; bracelet
Osaka Sougo 逢坂壮五逢 (ou) = meeting坂 (saka) = hill壮 (sou) = magnificent; strong; manly五 (go) = five**Ousaka 逢坂 is literally “meeting hill”. Often used figuratively as a place of meeting or separation between men and women.
Rokuya Nagi 六役ナギ六 (roku) = six弥 (ya) = full; complete; perfect**Nagi ナギ is in katakana so there’s no exact meaning in it. The most well-known ‘Nagi’ kanji is 凪 which means 'calm'
Nanase Riku 七瀬陸七 (nana) = seven瀬 (se) = rapids; current; torrent; shallows陸 (riku) = land; shore; six** 陸 can be read as riku or roku, and roku is six. In part 3, Nagi once said that ‘idolish7 will still be complete even if I'm not in it’ when he heard that Riku’s name has both six and seven in it…
Takanashi Tsumugi 小鳥遊紡小鳥 = small bird遊 = play; wander; travel紡 = speak; spin
** Just like Tsunashi surname, the surname Takanashi 小鳥遊 is quite a unique name.We can change the surname 小鳥遊 into a phrase, that is 小鳥が遊ぶ - kotori ga asobu which means “The small birds are playing”. Then, why is it read as Takanashi not Kotoriaso? It's not because kotoriaso sounds lame. It’s because Japanese really likes word association game. The situation where small birds can play freely is a situation free of hawks which are their predator. Hawk is 鷹 Taka in Japanese. The absence of something is 無し Nashi in Japanese. Thus, this rare family name is read as Takanashi.
