Episode 1x10 Sic Transit Gloria Mundi

My personal take on this scene is that Shauna is trying to express to Jackie, regardless of if Shauna realizes shes doing it ,

that Jackie is so consumed by her own feelings to ever recognize everything that Shauna has done for her and how much she truly has sacrificed,

while also simultaneously saying “you can’t see how in love with you I am, let alone the true reason why I would ever sleep with Jeff”.

( sleeping with Jeff to be as close to jackie as possible )

Immediately after Jackie claims that she knows Shauna does not have feelings for Jeff, And Shauna replied, “How would you know?” Shauna goes on to say;

“You tell me what to wear, who to hook up with, I don’t even like soccer!”

… As if to say “you tell me who to hook up with, and I don’t even like boys, I like you.”

Another thing, Shauna only plays soccer because of Jackie? Meaning Shauna would have never been in that plane crash, never would have ended up stranded in the wilderness, and would have never been the reason jackie died.

Jackie is too caught up in her own shit to realize that Shauna does not even like soccer, she likes Jackie.

Shauna has sacrificed herself time and time again for jackie, just to be close to her in any way possible, without ruining their friendship.

And yet even if she hadn’t been on the soccer team, and she hadn’t done everything jackie said at all, she probably would have rather been in the plane crash with her.

Thats how much she loves jackie.

high masking in society because she has a routine to stick by and shauna as her comfort when others might get too much.

that all ruptures after the crash because she can’t adapt properly to this new sudden life change at all, there’s zero control and constant uncertainty because of this she’s struggling to keep up the mask, she can’t mirror the same behaviours and has nothing to contribute to the group so she grows insecure and uncertain of herself; feeling like she doesn’t belong.

things all ready being too much for her to handle, possibly getting mental exhaustion from not only the changes but always having to be around a large group of people who judge for thinking it’s laziness. that’ll make it harder to understand whether to mask or not because both versions of herself are unwanted by the group.

misty is a pretty good example of the opposite scenario happening for an autistic character. where she felt unwanted and just couldn’t quite fit into the group pre-crash she then falls into an outcome where not only does she feel needed but has multiple things to contribute to the group; she finally fits in (but not for long lmao)

after the betrayal and lack of loyalty she felt from shauna, she gets to a breaking point and needs some form of control back in her life which is where her comphet issues come into this. pre-crash comphet jackie makes a lot of sense since she’s already high masking and going about a lifestyle that she deems as desirable to others.

i don’t think jackie cared as much about jeff cheating, it definitely hurt her feelings but what really stung was that it was shauna. again because of this jackie loses more control of her emotions and in order to push away those unwanted feelings she sleeps with travis, gaining a sense of control over herself again but as we all know that day ended TERRIBLY and even before she was casted out she lost all sense of control immediately after sleeping with travis.

Jackie was familiar with airports, she had flown a few times. Usually at least once a year; her family had the money and liked to travel, but never let her travel on her own. That being said, she had no issues navigating the airport. She lived in a small town in New Jersey, so it wasn’t hard to find Shauna’s gate after getting through security. Every few minutes, she would reload the tab that was tracking her girlfriend’s flight, bouncing her leg impatiently. Playing in her earbuds was Shauna’s favorite song. The familiar lyrics wrapped around her brain like a warm hug.

The plane wheels touching the ground meant that Shauna could breathe again. She stared out the window as the plane taxied slowly, approaching her gate. It took a second for her to remember that she could take her phone off airplane mode, so that she did, intending to text Jackie and tell her that she had arrived.

this is a really interesting question for me. i'm sort of going to give my opinion in a round about way because its very bound up in who i am, so bare with me. i wouldn't feel equipped to answer this question if i didn't relate very heavily to jackie. part of my yj love started just from how seen i felt by jackie's character.

i was captain of a girls sports team, i was so stupidly lesbian, i had the on a boys sports team boyfriend who i didn't like at all, my home life wasn't like hers in many ways but my mother was also an addict and generally not nice lady lol, i tried my best to be as nice as i could to everyone, and surface level i was liked in a homecoming princess type way, but i had very few super close friends. i often got the "wow you're actually nice" or "i assumed you were a bitch" comments from people i'd never spoken to before and i had no idea why or how to prove that i was genuine. jackie gets accused of being "fake nice" to "manipulate people" a lot, but we really don't see her doing any manipulating or get any evidence that she doesn't mean the nice things she says and does.

i heavily relate to that and as i've gotten older i've realized that people often mistake the sense that something is off with fake kindness. i think there are a few reasons that jackie is treated the way she is, both by the other girls at the end of her life and by viewers, but it would take like...an extensive essay to get into the nuance of them lol, so i'll just stick with this:

i think being neurodivergent gets you the treatment that jackie gets a lot of the time. i'm EXTREMELY adhd, like really blow the assessment scores all the way up adhd lmao it impacts my life heavily, and i wasn't diagnosed until my twenties. i also score high on the autism screener and fit the criteria, but i have never/will never seek any formal diagnosis there just out of personal preference. all that to say, i relate heavily to jackie taylor, i think the girl is some kinda neurodivergent, and i think headcanoning characters as autistic makes total sense when the evidence tallies up lol.

the thing is, so many characters are lesbian-coded or adhd-coded or autisim-coded, because so many people don't know that they are those things. i knew i liked women from an early age, but i had the comphet of thinking i liked men also. so i didn't know i was a lesbian until i was 24. i didn't know i had adhd until i was 25. i didn't know i was (probably) autistic until 26. we don't have to know the words for the things we feel and do to embody them or to see them in others or to write them into characters. does that make sense?

anyway, if you think jackie taylor is autisic i love that and i can't say i disagree. that's my long-winded answer!
